Time Capsule Disk needs repair

Version 7.6.1
Says "there is a problem with the disk connected to the airport base station. "
Does this mean the 2TB drive on my TC or the LaCie External HD I have connected to the TC by USB?
Orange light is flashing but internet is working and appear to be able to see all time machine back ups, but can't see Lacie drive under shared devices.
It says to " connect the disk to my computer to repair the disk."
Which disk should I try first? TC or external drive?
Once connected what program do I use? Disk Utility?
Thank you!

Hi
I have used LaCie Firewire drives for many years - the biggest problems I have had (like many other people) has been with the power supply. You can buy replacements (from LaCie) but they are not cheap!
Often with mine the blue ligt would come on - and make noises - but the power supply was faulty.  My advice is to try another LaCie power supply first (either from a friend or whoever) - as that is often the most likely problem
Use Disk Warrior to check the drive as this is more thorough than Disk utility and will rebuild any directory problems
best of luck!

  • Airport utility message; time capsule disk needs repair

It is a one month old Time Capsule and was working fine. The light is  blinking yellow. I tried a restart on the time capsule. The airport internet is working fine. I opened disk utility but I do not see the time capsule disk there. Any help would be greatly appreciated?

You cannot fix a network disk from disk utility.. it only works on local disk.
I would return it now. Today.. while it is still called Today.
A disk that goes faulty that fast is doomed to early failure the next time.
There is only one function in the TC.. erase the disk.. do a one pass erase if it works.. note this may be greyed out if the disk if not even reachable.
You can also turn off the TC for a couple of hours to cool down.. is it hot btw?? It should run no more than just warm now.
Otherwise exercise warranty immediately.. to be a pain.. ask why they used Seagate drives after the iMac replacement program.

  • Time Capsule - Internal disk need repair message

    Hey.
Got TC -2 TB version with latest firmware.
was used to be my media server.....formally
    now it's just white box...
suddenly one night , wasnt able to connect to TC, on check green light was active..
but wasnt communicating and internet was down.
did restart- power down and up.
after that HDD not showing in finder window at all, and airport shows "internal disk need repair" tried few things but no luck
any idea to recover datat, how reliable is diskwarrior, data recovery softwares. can they see unmounted disk at all????
    help.

All hard disks have stated MTBF.. Mean Time Between Failures.. but that is Mean ie average.. some disks go early and some go seemly forever.. but 50% of the disks will be dead at the MTBF point.
A TC that is only 7 months old is under warranty.. Apple will replace the TC for you. They will not recover data.
If you have data on the TC it should only be Time Machine backups which means they are not important if you immediately make a new backup to another target disk. If you copied files to the TC without making backup you are very naughty.. you broke the rules.. that you never ever trust files to a single location. Now you have to pull apart your TC voiding the warranty (although if you do it carefully who is to know).. remove the hard disk and attempt recovery.. !! It is usually a simple loss of format.. tools like mentioned above can fix that and recover the files.. if not you send the drive to a data recovery centre where your data is mangled and recovered as best as they can do.. at a cost of around.. $500-1000 depending on size and problems.. get a quote first.

  • HT3728 Time Capsule disk repair

When I open Airport Utility for my Time capsule, it says: Status: internal disk needs repair.  The time capsule still works for internet access but will not backup (it does not see the disk).  Is there anything I can do other than buy a new device?

Ok, old TC is to be expected.. and the Gen2 have WD drives which are dying now.. which is kind of sad to see as they are supposedly the better black drive.
You can pull the drive out and keep using the TC. But it will also need power supply fixed soon.
    See http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
For a laptop where you don't want to continually plug and unplug an external disk the TC makes excellent sense.
Just go out and buy a new TC. It is actually good value at least for the 2TB.
If you want a cheap solution.. pull the hard disk out of the current TC.. and buy a USB drive and plug that into it.
You can patch the power supply if it needs it. It only needs a 5v to the board.

If you have a desktop computer, an external drive is superior in every way. Faster, cheaper, more reliable.
External usb are dirt cheap. But unless you have newest type Mac with USB3 do at least consider faster options FW800.. or if you are rich, Thunderbolt. For backup though usb2 is ok.
The current TC is well overdue for replacement.. that is my only hesitation.

  • Airport Utility says "Internal disk needs repairs".

I've had my Time Capsule for quite a while, and never had any problems with it. I keep my iTunes library on it, which is around 130GB of music. Recently, I had my iPod that held all my music had a hard-drive problem and I had to get it replaced and haven't received the new one yet. So the only place my music library is is on the Time Capsule. Lately it had been giving me problems while I was copying files in iTunes to it, and would disconnect in the middle, but when I unplugged it and plugged it in again (resetting did nothing) it would be fine until I was copying files to it again. Today, it did this multiple times, and then Airport Utility popped up saying the "internal disk needs repairs". I've read other people who had this problem, but the only thing I can find is that they had to erase it and then it was fine. I have the music library backed up on CDs from a few months ago, but I would really prefer to have the complete one as it stands now. Is there any way for me to fix this problem without erasing the entire hard-drive? I want those files!

    Welcome to the discussions!
Open your Hard Drive and look for your Time Capsule on the left under the SHARED heading.
Click the TC icon and a TC folder will display to the right.
Double click this folder to display the xxxx.sparsebundle files that contain all of your backups.
Double click on the xxxx.sparsebundle file for your computer. If a window pops up with a "skip" option, click "skip". A white disk image of your backups will appear on your desktop in a few minutes.
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Select your backup image in Disk Utility and click Verify
Depending on how large your backup is, it may take hours for Disk Utility to check your disk
If Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair to see if that will fix the issues.

  • HT201514 "Time Capsule Disk is Failing"

    Time Capsule Disk is Failing

There is no disk repair inside the TC. If the SMART check has gone off.. or the disk is now unreadable.. It needs to be replaced.. either the whole TC will be replaced by apple if still under warranty or applecare.. or the disk replaced by you..

  • Unable to delete files from Time Capsule disk

A while back I copied my user folder from my iMac on to my Time Capsule disk, which is mounted as a drive on my iMac's desktop. I now want to delete that copy. After some struggling with locked files I have managed to get it so that all I have left is a small hierarchy of folders containing no files. When I try to delete any of these folders, though, I get the error message: "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." Info says that I have read & write privileges to every folder in the hierachy.
Can anyone suggest a way that I can get rid of these few remaining folders? They are really bugging me!

Some of you are going to love this!!
Ok, after talking with someone at Apple, I was reminded of a simple Unix Command to do the job, even on Time Capsule. Here's what worked for me:
Time Capsule is connected to my Mac, via an Ethernet cable-- I don't know if this matters or not, maybe it will work over the wireless connection too, let me know!
You'll need to pull up Terminal in Applications > Utilities. It's a dangerous tool that Unix and Linux people use with skill all the time, but you have to be careful, cause it will cause permanent changes-- that is what I want here, of course. Just be extremely careful, ok? You have been warned.
    type "cd /Volumes"
    press Return
Now you're in the "Volumes" folder
type "ls" (as in the letter L)
    press Return
You should see your Time Capsule folder (whatever you named it)-- type "cd " and that particular name
Navigate till you can type "ls" and you can see the folder you are trying to delete.
Then, the command that worked for me is this:
(Please double check that "myFolderToDelete" is indeed the one that you want to delete!)
    sudo rm -rfd myFolderIWantToDelete
After a few seconds for the hard drive in the time capsule to spin up, it worked! Yea!
In fact, to be safe, if I were you, I would even go into Finder first and try to rename that folder, call it "myFolderToDelete" !!!
Why didn't I try this before? I've used Terminal, I should have thought of it before! bad nerd!
But the important thing is, problem solved .
A few things to note is that I was trying to delete a folder full of "Locked" files. If I wanted to delete several locked files that are not currently in a folder, I could make a new folder, and drag those files into it... now you have a folder you can delete. Just rename it "toBeDeleted" or something like that.
Finally, note that I am not currently using Time Machine (the automated backup program) with this Time Capsule, so I don't know if it will delete the Time Machine backup -- haven't tried that yet.
    Good Luck!

  • Time Capsule Disk & VPN

I just purchased a Time Capsule for a home network and backing up using Time Machine. I have a MacBook Pro, a MacBook, and a Windows XP Professional PC that I use for work. All is working beautifully; however, I cannot connect to the Time Capsule's disk from the Windows PC while connected through my corporate VPN. I am using Cisco VPN Client V 4.6.03.0021 and connecting via TCP. When I DISCONNECT from the VPN on the Windows PC I am able to browse the Time Capsule disk just fine. Is this a known issue? Same thing happens with a Bonjour printer connected to a 802.11g Airport Expess. The printer is not visible until I disconnect from the VPN. All software and firmware are up to date as of 3/20/07.

I'm having the exact same problem and now I'm much less excited about TC now because I have to be behind VPN a lot. Though, I was thinking about a far-less-than-perfect workaround which is to connect to TC directly from my PC using a USB-to-USB cable (while connected to the VPN network), just for occasional file transfer needs. Do you all think it would work? I'll give it a try sometime next week when I return home from my trip. (If you've ever tried before, I'd really appreciate your sharing.)

  • Cannot Access Time Capsule Disk from Boot Camp

    Hi,
I've set up a Time Capsule and I've been able to read and write from:
    1) My MacBook Pro and another MacBook
    2) A Windows XP (SP3) PC connected by Ethernet
3 )A Dell Laptop running Windows XP (wirelessly)
I can copy files to and from the disk and perform Time Machine Backups (on the Macs).
However, I have not been able to even connect to the disk (but I can use the internet normally) on the Time Capsule on my MacBook Pro Boot Camp Windows XP SP3. I can connect wirelessly and surf the net on the 5 Ghz (and 2.4 Ghz) (non-public/Guest Shared) network. (The password I entered to access the disk are the same on all machines listed, which was not confused with the Network Password) Does anyone face such a problem or know the cause/fix?
    Thank You in advance.

I use FileBrowser app. It works. Their latest version is much easier to configure than earlier versions. You need to turn file sharing on and SMB on your time capsule disk.
I use the time capsule disk to store a few files which I never want to be on my iPhone or iPad, but do want access to them. They are not backed up on the time capsule but since they also exist on my Mac, they are backed up from there.

Could that read " . . . could not access . . ."?  If so, try repairing your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If not, or if that doesn't help, see #A1 there. Use the TM Buddy widget it details to copy and post the messages here.

  • 'Disk Needs Repair' warning on base station w/ Hitachi 2TB USB Drive

Trying to use my new 2TB USB Hitachi XL Desk Drive (mac formatted) on my extreme base station. Drive works perfectly on my MacBook Pro but when I plug it in to the base station both with & without a powered usb hub, airport utility says 'Disk Needs Repair' & amber light flashes. Disk shows up in utility as a 1.8TB Hitachi but disk title is not listed. Other drives work just fine on the base station. Not sure what else to try at this point.

Connect the drive back to your MacBook Pro.
Open Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Click on your drive on the left side of the window to highlight it, then click Repair Disk over on the lower right of the window. May take 30-90 minutes or so depending on how much data is on the drive.
You may also need to click Repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility as well.
IF...you are using the drive for Time Machine backups, Apple does not support backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme. You will have issues if you try this.

  • Time Machine says Time Capsule Disk unavailable

I have the exclamation point in the menubar icon and Time Machine says Time Capsule Disk unavailable even though I have backed up to it many times before.  I tried unpluging/plugging in the TC, but this did not solve the problem.  Any ideas?

However, I did have a problem periodically with computers not recognizing the TC disk before I had unclicked the "Enable file sharing" box, so I might still end up using your advice if this happens in the future.
There is a bug or several of them.. losing the disk is one thing the new 7.6.4 firmware is supposed to fix.. my deeply held suspicion is that Apple are using all of us as beta testers.. as lots of people are having trouble. But who knows it may finally fix this bug.. we are awaiting confirmation. ie people saying it is now fixed.. rather than since loading 7.6.4 my TC is now dead.. or disappeared .. or broken.. or no longer has wireless output.
Lets say maybe they fixed a bug.. and added some more.
The reason I had unchecked the "Enable file sharing" box is because I have Mountain Lion Server and wanted to use port mapping on the TC to point to my computer as a File Server.  To do this I went into Airport Utility and in Network pane tried to add File Sharing to the Port Settings.  However, this conflicted with the "Enable file sharing" box from the Disks pane.  Do you know of a way to have time machine backups to TC but also run a File Server from a computer networked with the TC using port mapping?  Thank you for any guidance.
You only need the ports forwarded to the server to get outside access.. ie remote wan access.. Did you have wan access to the TC checked.. that will cause a conflict with AFP .. since it cannot be forwarded to multiple destinations at once.
If you do not have WAN access checked then you should be able to check "enable file sharing" since that is local lan..
Try it and tell me what happens.. I have never tried the combo you are using.
I would try simply using a different method to access if that doesn't work.. eg BTMM should work fine to the Server without needing ports forwarded in the TC.. as long as the TC is the main router.. and this whole issue is only because the TC is the main router.
You can also do it with vpn.. which is more robust and more business/pro method to access a server remotely than AFP.

  • 7.5.2 Firmware Update causing Ambar Flashing / Internal Disk needs Repair

I just updated my firmare to 7.5.2 on my 2TB TimeCapsule, and after a couple of days my access to the TimeCapsule feature stopped working because I got a message theta says: "internal disk needs repair".
I been noticing that a lot of people here, in the forum, are having the same problems. I have tried downgrading to a previous version of the firmware to no avail. It's really dissapointing because there really you can do but wait for a solution from Apple, because you information is being held hostage until there is a solution. If any body has a better solution please help!!!!

FMPENA27, welcome to the discussion area!
If you are getting a message that your "internal disk needs repair", you might consider repairing your internal disk.

  • There is a problem with your airport time capsule disk

    Hello,
Since I got my airport time capsule and set it up, I got an error "there is a problem with your airport time capsule disk" and disk is not listed for setup or erase. The LED is flashing amber sine I turned on the first time.
The wifi is working fine as well as the internet connectivity.
I got the device from the online store and was shipped to my address in the states but I opened the box the first time in Saudi Arabia as I left the states immediately after receiving it.
Any advise on fixing this or a near by apple support center where I can get it in for repair / replacement?

Any advise on fixing this or a near by apple support center where I can get it in for repair / replacement?
I would first suggest that you perform a "factory default" reset on your Time Capsule (TC).
If that fails to remedy the problem, you can obtain technical support from Apple here.

  • Is time capsule still needed if u have iCloud

Is time capsule still needed in u have iCloud

The Time Capsule is an Airport Extreme with a hard disk inside.. so it is a full router.
But I cannot answer the question.. if your netgear router is also a modem.. then the TC is not a modem and you would still need the netgear or something similar.
