Time consuming SQL

Question

Forte Users,
I have a window with many filinfield's, and I want to update them
as soon I open that window. But there are too much data, and it takes too
long. Is there any way to decrease that wait?
I tried do make a LIKE statement within my SQL, but it doesnt seem
to accept a variable ( textdata or string ) like <:name> as the LIKE
compare parameter.
Any help?...
