Time machine creates new machine

Hi just before christmas I moved to leopard and started using time machine. Everything was fine, however 2 weeks ago I sent my computer to an apple authorised repairer as it needed a new logicboard (3rd replacement in 15 months!!!).
The machine has come back and now when it boots up I can click the time machine icon and see and access all my backups since december but as soon as the system does its hourly backup it decides to create a new system profile in time machine and to do another 60gb backup.
Basically it can't see the existing backup when it goes to update but it can when you are checking. Whilst I highly suspect it has something to do with the logic board changing I am not 100% sure.
Any ideas?

Hi, thanks, yes they are the same name. The machine is called "Big Mac". If you let it create a backup it makes a new machine called "Big Mac (2)".
It was not the same fault, The first two could not boot external drives or boot camp, the third developed a sound problem (and they forgot to attach the ir sensor back). The latest one came back today with a fan sensor problem (all fans spinning at max all the time) and there were disk images in my trash of my itunes collection where they had burnt the directory using disk image. After a big complaint they came to my house and did it onsite. I am not surprised because it shows that they were A)stealing my music and B)not testing finished work.
But enough about that, anybody with any more ideas I would be greatful.

  • Every time system create new production order after releasing sales order c

    Hi Guru,
FG material strategy: 82 (sales order creates production order).
After creating the sales order it goes in to credit block. Whenever we release sales order from credit block through VKM1, system has created production order. We confirmed this production order and delivered.
But after this sales person change the sales order value, because of which again sales order goes into the credit block and after releasing sales order from credit block system create new production order even if one production order already confirmed and delivered against the same sales order.
*Every time system create new production order after releasing sales order credit block.
    Thanx & regards
    pnu

    PNU,
    So, to restate:
In MD04, you have Unrestricted Sales order Stock ('E' Stock) on hand.
In the same MRP segment, and against the same Storage Location as the stock, you have a Sales Order requirement that was recently blocked and unblocked.
During the unblocking event, the system produced a new production order.
This is not normal.  If the above accurately depicts your situation, I would look for an altered Strategy 82, or a userexit.  SAP ATP (the beginning event of the Strat 82 process) will normally first check for the availability of stock.  Only if the stock is not available, then it will create the new production order.
    Best Regards,

  • Time machine created new backup file

After migration, time machine created a new data file in time capsule. How do i instruct it to access the original? Thanks!

I ejected the USB drive and turned it off, erased the Timemachine.plist file from the shared directory and then turned back on the USB drive. I then went into Timemachine and turned the program back on. Timemachine then started a count down sequence and then automatically started the scheduled backups. The problem is fixed.

  • Startup problems--time for a new machine?

I have an imac G5 that I bought last February. In the last few weeks I've been experiencing serious startup problems. When turned on, the screen goes gray and the lines and pixels fragment and shimmer. It takes a long time to go to the main screen and often the screen isn't stable and freezes. It takes me eight to ten startups to get the system stable.
I've repaired disk permissions, repaired h-drive, reset Pram. Still a mess. My husband wants me to just get a new one and get something that is not an Apple this time. I'm resisting that.
I don't want to lose all my data and I've backed up what I can but I'm worried the data is corrupted and if I load it on to a new machine, I will experience the same problems.
Any advice? I'm not even sure if this is a hardware or software problem. I'm out of warranty so I am on my own, but I'm frustrated to be having these problems with such a new machine.
    Thanks for any advice,

    Hello Every body
We have a new Server (Windows server 2003 OS)
So My Manager asked me to Move Our Oracle Databse 10g release 2 from an Old Sever to The New one , i Will also install Oracle Databse 10g release 2 on the New server , Everything will be same like the Old one ..
My Question is , What is the easiest way to Do that ... ? , And i will be appreciate if you Give me instruction as steps , Like 1 , 2 , 3 ...
i was thinking to Install the New Database at the New server , and Copy All Oradata folder From Old Server Database to the New One ... is that right ? Or ... ?!!

ooh man , i was thinking its easy task , but i can feel from your voice that its a complicated task , is it ??!!
    thanks again
AlaaIt's not all that complicated, but your old DBA left you with a mess and it may take a while to clean up.
First of all, you should not be running any kind of production (and many kinds of "non-production") database in noarchivelog mode, unless you really, really know what you are doing. It is prima-facie evidence that someone does not know what they are doing. So there will be issues of space and configuration that are what we nicely call "deferred maintenance" but more accurately naming would be censored by this board.
Second, mulitiple databases on a Windows box is usually a mistake. But that may or may not be true, as people from the MS world often have a different definition of "database," what Oracle calls a schema. So you need to let us know if there are multiple databases from the Oracle viewpoint - multiple alert logs, services and so forth.
Third, not having archives means your backup is done wrong. You will need to fix that!
You are fortunate in that you are moving to a new box, so hopefully the 4 days you mentioned means a window of opportunity at an arbitrary time in the future, not just 4 days from yesterday. This lets you try it several ways. 30G isn't all that big. Personally, I favor exp/imp, because that fixes some old problems that may be floating about, such as tablespace conversions that didn't really convert from DMT to LMT. It has it's own issues, such as the possibility of wasting some space and various well-known idiosyncracies that newbies inevitably trip over, but it also means the db is starting fresh and clean.
So this is what I do when given the opportunity:
Create a new db on the new machine, you can use the database creation assistant. There will be a parameter file, find the one on the old machine (you may want to google "create pfile from spfile") and compare to the new one, you may want to make some adjustments. If there are any parameters that start with one underscore, you want to ask about those. You don't want to just blindly use the same parameters.
Come up with scripts to exp each schema on the old machine.
Evaluate the metadata of tablespaces and objects that will be coming over. Exactly how depends on how many - some systems have tens of thousands, but only use thousands - but note there is an option to get imp to put the metadata into text files you can edit, and there are programmatic ways to get them from the original db.
Pre-create the tablespaces and tables in the new system.
    Imp the data.
Make several test runs, fixing issues as I find them. In some cases I use the create table as select syntax over a network instead of importing the data. Once you have the db created, you can drop schema to clean them up if you've made scripts to recreate the metadata.
Test your app, this may point up some things missed that are outside schemata, and missing grants and synonyms.
Now, I've been doing this for a long time, so I use the old exp/imp, but as a newbie you may want to use the new one (impdp). Note there are ways to use the network so you don't have to copy export files, and various ways to compress, which can speed up moving things around. Since I usually am in a fog of much more work upgrading apps, I may have missed some steps. but hopefully this gives you a starting point.
You may want to get a consultant in who is familiar with your app and doing this kind of migration, if there is any kind of pressure.

  • Time Machine creates new disk image when backing up but files not visible

When I back up my files (daily) to tan external drive TM creates a new disk image (named laptop) on my desktop (in addition to the image for the external drive named TIme Machine Backups). When I click on the new disk image while it's backing up I see a list of recent backups. However the disk image disappears after completing the back up and the files do not appear in the Star Wars screen - only old back-ups from 2009. How can I access the newest backups?

    alanol wrote:

Right-click it, and select +Get Info.+ See what the path is (after +Disk image+ near the top of the General section).
Also the amounts for Capacity and Used.
as a consequence of the repair a sparse bundle (Zero KB) folder was created.
No. That may have been created by the new backup, though.
Also a new "lost +found" folder was created containing several ".emix" files.
    Those are email files.
Net, net - same basic problem, can't see the newest backups in the Star Wars screen.
I suspect they're in the disk image.
Do you have any external HDs connected?
Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Time Machine Creates New Sparse Bundle

I have a 1TB hard disk connected to a Mac Mini over USB. That disk is shared on the network. My laptop and my wife's laptop are both set up to use that shared disk for Time Machine backups. Generally, things have worked fine.
This morning, I discovered a message from Time Machine on my laptop stating that there wasn't enough space on the drive to complete the backup. That didn't make sense - too few files had changed. When I investigated, I discovered that Time Machine had, after a successful backup at 21:29 last night, started creating a new sparse bundle for its backups.
I restarted my laptop and ran Disk Utility's Repair function on the shared drive (using the Mac Mini to run the repair). I've toggled Time Machine off and back on in System Preferences. The behavior remains: even though there is an existing sparse bundle (machinename.sparsebundle) on that share, when I tell Time Machine to do a backup, it creates a new sparse image: machinename-1.sparsebundle and starts backup up all of my files to it.
Also, if I "Enter Time Machine," Time Machine informs me that it can't find the disk. But it does offer for me to "Use Previous Disk..." if I first mount the "old" disk image (machinename.sparsebundle). Having the old disk image mounted does not prevent Time Machine from making machinename-1.sparsebundle when I tell it to do a backup, however.
I'm at a loss. I've checked the console logs and there's nothing useful there. Is there some hidden setting something that "forces" Time Machine to write to a specific sparse bundle?
I'm rapidly reaching the conclusion that these "over the air backups" aren't worth the bother: a directly-attached disk seems much simpler and more reliable.
Thanks in advance for any helpful hints,
    Tony

When you do a +*Repair Disk+* on a directly-connected volume that contains a sparse bundle, the sparse bundle itself may not be repaired. Drag it into the Disk Utility sidebar via the Finder, then select it and try +*Repair Disk+* again.
Okay. I did this - but it told me that the disk appeared to be okay. Which jives with my intuition, since Time Machine is able to use that image +for recovering files+ if I manually mount it and inform Time Machine that it should use it.

Does the widget source a different set of logs than the Console app? When I select "All Messages" in Console, I get the following when I attempt to do a backup:
    11/12/10 2:35:23 PM com.apple.backupd[9404] Starting standard backup

    11/12/10 2:35:38 PM hdiejectd[9413] quitCheck: calling exit(0)
I read this as "Time Machine didn't even bother trying to use my 'transient.sparsebundle' that exists on that disk."
    A couple of notes:
    * My wife has no difficulty backing up to her image on that same AFP share.
    * Between my initial post and this one, I updated to 10.6.5 - with no change in behavior.

  • Time machine creating new backup for external hd every time it is connected.

    Hi.
I have recently gotten a Time Capsule to back up my files.
I want to back up my internal harddrive as well as an external harddrive with master images from aperture.
Theoretically time machine should skip trying to back up the external drive when it is not connected, and make a backup when it is. (I only connect the disk when working with the images)
However, the problem is that every time I connect the external hd to back it up, time machine seems to create a total new backup of the whole drive and not just the changes. It seems to not recognise that it has already backed up the disk before. Does anyone know how to fix this?
I know it is possible, since I have used this system before, but can't quite figure out how to solve the problem.
    Thanks!

If the drive is not recognised.. you should see multiple external drives in the backup.. is that in fact what is happening.
What makes you think it is doing a whole new backup??
One factor you may not have considered is that Time Machine does need to do a deep scan of the disk when it has missed more than a few days. A deep scan can take ages over wireless as it will have to actually compare the backup with the files on the disk. Determine what has changed, make up a list of files that need backup and then start and actually do the backup.. this might even take longer than a straight clean backup.
Have you checked the TM log for what it is really doing?? Pondini widget will give you that info. See A1 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
I have a simple solution.. that will cost you around $40.. use Carbon Copy Cloner.. not Time Machine. It simply handles this kind of thing better.
There are a number of other solutions that you can buy.. 3rd party backup software.. you can even do it manually via rsync.. however.. a tool like CCC which is based on rsync is a heck of lot easier than writing your own backup scripts.

I have multiple Mailboxes on my old iMac that I use to keep email messages of continuing importance. I need to move them to my new iMac, basically creating the same setup. • Need to add date/time stamp to file name without time change creating new files

We have setup our application to save data once a trigger event occurs. We also need the date/time stamp as part of the file name. We used Format Date/Time String and concatenated it into the file name. It all works good, but as the time changes (seconds, minutes, etc.) it causes the Write to File to create a new file with the new filename. Is there a way to create the file and save/latch/buffer the time in the file name so that it doesn't create a new file for every second?
I've attached a shot of the relevant part of our VI. It's all in a big while loop. The data save is in a case/switch so that when it is triggered it starts saving. (The for loop is to split the data up
into 4 different files). Like I said, it all works except new files are created every second as the time changes instead of just putting it all in one file with the initial time in the file name.

I need a loop in order to use a shift register. I cannot stop the outer while loop (because it would stop the hardware from collecting data), and I cannot add loops inside which bogs down the processor to where the app stops. I've attached a simpler version of my VI which illustrates the problem. While the button is pressed (the trigger) it should save the data (in this case just cycle numbers) into one file with the initial date/time. But, you can see that it creates 1 file/second. I tried using shift registers, but without adding extra loops I can't see how to do it. Thanks

  • Opinions - time for a new computer?  need more RAM, Time Machine back up full - get new computer?

I am in a quandary.  My early 2008 iMac needs more Ram.  I could upgrade from 2gb to 4gb for around $60.  My 1T external hard drive for Time Machine is full and I do not relish the idea of it erasing old data if I continue to use it this way, but then I am shelling out more money for a new hard drive.  Can get new 3T hd for about $200.  Is it worth it to shore up my computer?  I have recently upgraded OS to ML and it is really starting to act sluggish.  I hate the idea of having to transfer everything over to a new Mac and therefore new OS.   I need a working computer every day for business for my husband, so it would be impossible to go without a computer while things are being transferred over - and how long would it take for me to do that.  Plus, will files and photos be transferred over exactly as I have organized them?  I have spent a lot of time organizing bookmark folders in Safari, mailboxes in Mail and albums and folders in iPhoto.  Don't want to start from scratch again.   Also don't like the idea that the new iMacs don't have a slot for dvds and cds, playing and burning.  I do a lot of this kind of thing.  So then I would need to buy a separate thing for doing this as well as the computer itself.  Have wondered how many things have changed from ML to Maverick.  Another big learning curve???
Would really appreciate any thoughts and opinions.  I am a senior citizen and don't know how to sort through this.  One thing I think about is that I don't know how much longer I will be living and able to do computer work. I know everything is a risk, but would like some advice even if it is only an opinion.

It's probably time for a new machine. You won't have to start from scratch. Migration Assistant will bring over all of your data and apps (some may need to be re-activated using product keys). Depending on how much you actually have, a few hours should be all it takes over Ethernet.
Time Machine should continually erase the oldest backups when it needs space for new ones.
You might want to do both. Upgrade the RAM in the old machine to the max it will take, and buy a new machine as well. If your husband really needs a machine available all the time for business, having a 'spare' is a good thing.
Check out what's available in the refurb store. They are virtually indistinguishable from new retail stock and come with a full warranty. You can save hundreds.
