Time Machine error leading to Finder crash

I have only started using TM recently, and over a wired network did the first backup. Then since then all other backups have failed using WiFi.
I have a MacBook (Core Duo from 2006) and a MacMini with a Iomega 1TB Firewire drive attached to it. Both mac are running OS 10.5.8
On the backup HDD, there is a file called: Macbook_0016cbcb6e19.sparsebundle
The MAC address of the ethernet connector is 0016cbcb6e19. That of the airport network doesn't appear. (I expected to see 0017f25371b4 in the sparse bundle name).
The initial backup was a total of 75GB. Then the next 4 hours, after not doing much changes, TM was starting the first incremental backup, but it was giving a message of backing up 20GB. This to me is strange as there have only been very small changes on the HD to back up. In any case, it seems to continue, and then always fail. An alert displays with the Iomega HDD is disconnected.
But if I do a ls on /Volumes it is still mounted. What is the difference between an afp mount and a TM mount? Or what causes the mount to fail or cause the disconnected window alert to show? Is TM more sensitive to signal interruptions than say screen sharing and terminal connections?
I did a check on the signal strength of the WiFi and placed a cron on the macmini:

The 79-81 value range is the signal given by the airport -I command agrCtlRSSI:
This shows that the signal occasionally drops but recovers.
I placed a shell script to automatically mount the network drive on the macbook when on the local network:

mount_afp "afp://$user:$pass@$backupServer/$backupHd" "/Volumes/$backupHd"
Is this necessary or will TM always mount the drive anyway?
When TM is running it mounts a disk image called Backup of MacBook once it has completed preparing. Then it also mounts "Iomega HDD-1". What is this disk mount for?
I have noticed that if I use ls -l /Volumes the terminal window will crash.
ls /Volumes will work ok though in a new shell window after than.
Then I use killall backupd and it stops the TM.
But then I notice that Finder is not responding. I try to restart Finder, but it doesn't work. Using the alt+tab to display all the currently running apps, Finder does not appear as a running app.
From the command line I try to launch Console but this also does nothing.
I have to control-C to stop it. then I have to use 'reboot' command, but this does nothing. Then I tried 'halt'. this also does nothing. A force shutdown is necessary. After rebooting the machine works OK. This pattern has happened 3 times now. It there any further troubleshooting I should do to try and fix this?

You've got a number of things going on here.
First, when you say "wired network" do you mean you connected your MacBook to the Mini via an Ethernet cable?

That's how TM keeps track of which backups are for which Mac (not computer name or serial number).
TM was starting the first incremental backup, but it was giving a message of backing up 20GB. This to me is strange as there have only been very small changes on the HD to back up.
A number of things can cause extra-large backups. Unfortunately, the only way to be sure what it is, is to look at the completed backup via +Time Tracker+ to see what was backed-up (see #D4 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum. It also lists some of the common culprits).
Bur first, you need to find out just why the backups are failing. Start with #C2 of the Troubleshooting Tip. It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.

Probably, because there's more going on, but it should recover.

It should mount the sparse bundle when needed.
Then I use killall backupd and it stops the TM.
Don't do that unless you have to. Try to cancel the backup (from the TM icon in the menubar, or the TM Preference pane).
Since you've done that, you should probably do a +*Repair Disk+* on the TM drive per #A5 of the Troubleshooting Tip.
You might also want to try the things in #D2 there. Some of those things may help, but it sounds like your wireless connection is fairly bad.

  • Time machine error could not find passport external drive

    Trying to run time machine.  At the end of the process i get an error that the back up  was delayed until the disk could be found.   The passport external hardrive is attached . is formatted for MAc and can be seen in finder.  What can I do so Time machine recognized it? 

    If none of his tips describe the issue, then all I can think of is that there's something amiss with the WD ext HD. Erase and reformat it and don't use the WD SmartWare which isn't. FWIW, I don't use TM, so if this doesn't do the trick, then I'm out of ideas.

  • First Time Capsule Backup Failed - Time Machine Error

    I bought my Time Capsule yesterday because I needed to backup my MacBook (which I bought 6 months ago). My plan was to backup the MacBook to the TC and then do an Erase and Install of my MacBook because of problems I'm having with the MacBook (it constantly hangs for a minute or more - sometimes up to 20 times a day). I thought an erase and install might fix the problem.
    After setting up the Time Capsule and connecting it to the MacBook with a Cat 6 ethernet cable for the first backup I went to bed. I noticed that, when the backup started, it was taking approximately 5 minutes to backup the first Gb of data. As TC noted there was 80GB to backup I assumed this would take 6 or 7 hours to complete.
    This morning when I checked the MacBook I discovered a message on the screen of my MacBook as follows -
    Time Machine Error
    Unable to complete bacup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume.
    Nothing else! When I check the Time Machine in Finder, under Data there is the following -
    Patricia Henwood’s MacBook_002332b6d076.sparsebundle and this is 50.82GB.
    Can anyone suggest what I should do?
    I bought the TC yesterday because all my other backup drives are Firewire and, of course, the MacBook doesn't have a Firewire port.
    Should I just 'give up'? The MacBook is covered by Apple Care (and anyhow, even if it weren't it's only 6 months old so, presumably, it's still covered by Apple warranty). I understand from the salesman where I bought my TC that it, too, is covered by my Apple Care for the MacBook because I bought it to use with the MacBook.
    Would the simplest solution be to make an appointment to take the MacBook and the TC to the genius bar and see if they can help?

    Hi dealbata, happy to hear that yours is now up and running. My fourth TC backup attempt last night failed yet again (at 50.8GB) - I read in a previous thread (which I can no longer find but which was more than 5 pages long and went back to 2007) about many people who have had the message
    Time Machine Error
    Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume.
    From that thread, 'famouswolf' posted a solution which involved checking the system.log using Console.app (Utilities folder). In his case (and in mine) the problem was caused by corrupted files in iPhoto. The solution was to actually delete the files (all those that had an ERROR (-36) message next to them in the system.log. To delete them you have to locate them in your iPhoto Library file and delete them in the Finder. As you can imagine, this is a long and tedious process (I have over 8000 images in my iPhoto library) - frankly, I've already wasted two days on this - and the TC was bought so I could back up my MacBook and then discover what the REAL problem is with my MacBook (it hangs and/or crashes between 10 and 20 times a day :-((
    So, I've bitten the bullet and re-partitioned my MacBook's hard drive and done a fresh install of OS X and the applications that came on the install DVD. I've then run Software Updater until everything is up to date and I am now in the course of doing a backup of the MacBook to the TC of the 'bare bones' of my system - it's only 14.3GB so I hoping it will work. Then I'll copy across what I need from my iMac and hope that tonight TC will backup everything.

  • Time Machine no longer can find my backup disk

    Since the OSX 10.6.6 upgrade, I am unable to do a Time Machine backup on my MacBook Pro. It is on a network with my iMac which is connected via FireWire to my Drobo. I have never had a problem before with Time Machine being able to find the Sparsebundle that Time Machine sets up on a network connected drive. Now it gives me the message, "The identity of the backup disk has changed.". I tried deleting the Sparsebundle and then letting Time Machine start over. That worked, but the next rime it attempted to backup, I got the same error message.
    I would appreciate any help.

    I ran the time machine. Then, "preparing backup" showed up for a long time. After that, a window pop out: "Time machine error, The disk image cannot be mounted" What is disk image? What can I do (I can't back up anything)

    I'm having the same issue. I do not have TC as my base station. It says right in the book that if you choose, you do not have to have it run as your router, just as a part of your existing wireless network. All software is up to date and I have already shortened the name of both my TC and TC disc to 6 characters and no spaces! I've already spoken with someone today about this. He really didn't know. Have tried backing up both wirelessly and directly connecting with an Ethernet cord. I had to finally call because when I attempted to register the product to get online support, apple.com didn't recognize the serial number!!! The gentleman on the phone got it registered for me. I bought the TC from an official apple store and for whatever reason when he put in the serial number his computer said that this TC was so "old" I guess that there was technically "no support." That basically means that even though my parents just purchased this for me a week before Christmas, that it was made a year ago and the warranty is not good?? I need to do more research on that. Right now I am very unhappy about this. I am a firm apple user and have been for years, but this is frustrating.
    I had read somewhere else (not sure I've been searching apple for what seems like forever now) to make sure that the TC was showing up in "devices" of the Finder. Mine doesn't show up there, but rather in the "Network" window. Is this an issue? If it is, can anyone tell me how to fix that. I have Time Machine backing up to my TC, so I do not see why it would be.
    UPDATE: I just opened up my TC on the "Shared" section of the Finder window and deleted the old "sparsebundle" (I had no clue that anything had backed up way back at 3:30pm on Dec 29) and now I get a slightly new message: Time Machine Error: The backup disc image could not be created." So now the word "mounted" is replaced with "created." This error showed up a lot sooner than the original one. Ok, no clue. I am going to try to Change the Disc again, and try again. I will post another update.

    Not for the first time Time Machine has broken down - originally in September 08 (I just can't recall how I fixed it!!).
    Now it has failed after 14 months of faultless performance.
    There seems to be little help available, but searching for solutions finds plenty of problems.
    I get the message "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying to the backup disk.
    The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair you backup disk."
    (I have a Time Capsule as my backup disk)
    Disk Utility runs and finds-
    Verifying volume “Backup of xxxxxx’s iMac”

    So I search and find "Fix for broken Time Machine backups under Snow Leopard"
    (http://www.andrewgrant.org/2009/09/22/fix-for-broken-time-machine-backups-under- snow-leopard.html) - downgrading to 7.4.1 of the Airport Extreme / Time Capsule firmware.
    But still have the same Time Machine error!
    On to http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=103919&highlight=TimeMachineError
    and try-
    "... suggesting would be something like renaming the existing TimeMachine file on your backup disk - e.g. add a date to the end of it.
    And then go onto Time Machine preferences and set it up as if it were the first time you used it. (Renaming the file on the backup disk should make Time Machine think that you are starting fresh.)"
    So, using Finder, I opened my Time Capsule and renamed "xxxxxx’s iMac_00224135e6fb.sparsebundle" as "091222xxxxxx’s iMac_00224135e6fb.sparsebundle091222"
    And finally, this worked - I have my backups to 22 December and a complete backup as at today and hopefully for at least another 14 months!

    Thanks so very much for your help!! I'm boggled by it and now just about ready to dump the whole idea of Time Machine and backup using a cloning program. Maybe TM is only guaranteed to work well with Time Capsule these days?
    Today there again was no backup. I did as you suggested, looked into Console. It showed many lines of "(Error) DiskStore: No block in wakeup" and also repeatedly "(Warning) DiskStore: Ignored bogus fetch...".
    So I created a marker and attempted to initiate a backup, keeping Console open and refreshed. Here's what I got:

    During this 9-minute timeframe Finder also was inoperative - according to Activity Monitor: "Not Responding".
    I'm thinking it's the standalone Buffalo backup drive not waking up, and so everything comes to a screeching halt. Do you also think I should abandon TM and just do manual backups every day using a clone program?

    Hello - I have searched the posts and nothing seems to touch on this specifically - I have been using Time Machine successfully for months and this has only started to happen in the last few days.
    I have a white Macbook, 10.5.6 with an upgraded 150GB hard drive. I do backups sporadically (once or twice a week), as I don't want to keep my Macbook connected to a hard drive and I find using the airdisk feature on my AEBS takes too long and slows down the network. This has been working fine for me for months, but now I get the following message:
    Time Machine Error
    This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 2211365.5 GB but only 125.5 GB are available.
    I tried reformatting my disk (250GB hard drive) and the problem still arises. There are no external drives or anything connected to the Macbook at the time.
    Can anyone help? I don't want to go out and buy a Hard Drive with a 3million GB capacity!

    A disk check usually repairs these sorts of problems and should alleviate your issue.
    I believe you are correct and I would add that this case might require stronger medicine such as DiskWarrior to repair the directory structure, if that it the issue.

    I haven´t tried with Time Machine Buddy - but here is a few facts, that maybe could help me find a solution.
    My total backup size is approx. 300GB (on USB connected 1TB external disk)
    When i exclude the movie folder in iTunes (113GB) it works fine - when i include it, I get the above error...
    Whats wrong - corrupt file in the movie folder?? How do i locate it?? Foldersize to big???

    Welcome to Apple discussions.
    There is probably a corrupt file in the movie folder. Try TM Buddy. That gives you a log (almost real time) of what is happening when TM does a backup.

    Time Machine worked OK for several months. Now I get this error every 10 minutes or so.
    I unplugged Time Machine capsule and "Change Disk" in Time Machine options.
    Nothing helps, I continue to get this error.
    I cannot Enter Time Machine either. "Connecting to Server, Connecting to backup" does not work.
    Help please because I will probably have to archive and reinstall Leopard. I need the backups,

    Before you reformat the disk, consider these causes of this error.
    *_"The Backup Disk Image Could Not Be Mounted" (Console - “Failed to mount disk image”)_*
    First, it is important to distinguish this error message from another, similar Time Machine error that states “The backup volume could not be mounted”. This is important as the causes and cures for these two errors can be very different.
    Consider each topic below separately. When one option does not resolve your issue, then move on the next one.
    *Unmount the Backup Disk Image* (TC)
    If, for some reason, you have manually mounted the Time Machine backup disk image (sparsebundle), or Time Machine failed to eject it after the previous backup, subsequent backups may fail. (Console - “Failed to mount disk image”… “Backup failed with error: 21”)
    Eject the backup disk image (white drive icon) by either clicking the little Eject icon to the right of the disk image in the Finders’ Sidebar, or Ctrl-Click the drive icon on the desktop and select “Eject” from the contextual menu. Now try backing up again or launching Time Machine to view previous backups.
    *“Disconnect All Users…”:*
    If your Time Machine backup drive (“Backup of Users Computer”) is mounted on your desktop or in the Sidebar of the Finder window. then Time Machine may think the drive is already in use. Alternatively, if the Time Capsule hard disk has been recently accessed by a Windows machine, it may not have fully relinquished control. Do the following:
    Open Airport Utility and select the Time Capsule on the left.
    Click “Manual Setup”.
    Select “Disks” at top of window.
    Click “Disconnect All Users…” at bottom of window.
    Close the Airport Utility.
    Now try Backing up again.
    One poster reported: “I got it resolved. Apparently it had to do with one of the files being open on the disk from the drive. I had browsed the disk with one of my windows boxes here and it must have left one of the folders "open". Anyway, I rebooted the TC and we are good to go now.”
    *Proper Computer Name* #
    Make sure your computer has a proper name. Go to System Preferences --> Sharing. Time Machine needs to differentiate your computer from others on your network (i.e. "Bills MacBook" or "Office iMac"). If the "Computer Name" field is blank, create a name. Realize that if this step is necessary, you will likely have to start the Time Machine backup process over again and do another full initial backup.
    According to this article, [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1760], Time Machine may experience problems if your computer name includes certain characters. Make sure the computer name only includes ASCII characters from the following set.
    (0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ)
    Once a change in the computer name occurs, you should stop and restart Sharing on the affected computer. Uncheck and then recheck Sharing in the Services list on the left.
    # Try removing the apostrophe from the disk images name (sparsebundle).
    *A Stalled .inProgress Files:* #
    It may be that the previous backup attempt was ungracefully interrupted leaving remains that Time Machine can’t deal with.
    Stop any current backup attempt. Choose “Stop Backing Up” from the Time Machine menu.
    Open the Time Machine Preferences and turn “OFF” Time Machine.
    Open your Time Machine drive.
    Open the folder labeled “Backups,backupdb”.
    Now open the folder containing backups of the computer in question.
    Are there any “.inProgress” files there. Delete them by dragging the file to the Trash. Or Ctrl-Click the file and select "Move to Trash" from the contextual menu. (Give this time as deleting a large file on an external disk can take a while.)
    Turn Time Machine back “ON”. Now try backing up again.
    NOTE: If the above procedure becomes impossible to perform, try accessing the disk image from another Mac. Some have discovered that attempting a repair from another computer succeeds where the original computer failed.

    If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to a failed backup. Now
    CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
    so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
    If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
    If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • Time Machine Error after moving disk to Airport Extreme

    I have been using Time machine with a 1 TB, WD MyBook hard drive for the past 2 weeks with no problem. The drive had been connected directly to my Macbook Pro, via the Firewire 800 cable.
    Today, I moved the drive and connected it via USB to my Airport Extreme Base Station version 7.3.1.
    When Time Machine tried to create the next scheduled backup, I got the following error:
    *Time Machine Error*
    "This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 159.8 GB but only 159.1 GB are available.
    To select a larger volume, or make the backup smaller by excluding files, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine"
    It seems to me that Time machine is trying to do a brand new backup instead of the incremental one its supposed to do.
    How can I fix this and have TM recognize that there is already a backup sequence in the disk?

    Time Machine uses a different method for creating its archive, depending on how the backup disk is connected. When using a directly connected drive, it uses a time-stamped folder structure. When using a networked disk, it uses a sparse disk image format. Therefore, when you connected that drive to the base station, Time Machine was trying to create a new sparse image archive with the leftover space. It did not find enough space, since your direct connect Time Machine archive was taking up too much space already.
    If you want to use it over the network, you'll have to erase the drive and start over with Time Machine.

    Hello! I have a TC of 2 terabytes, dual network. Sometimes when I want to make a backup copy get an error "Time Machine Error: Unable to access the disk network backup because there was a problem with your user name or password for network". This usually happens several times a day, especially when the back of repose or iMac is the first time after being turned off.
    If I get into the time capsule hard disk (I connect) through the finder, and try to make the backup this works well.
    Starting standard backup
    Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://Cesar%20Dario%[email protected]/Backup
    NetAuthConnectToServerSync failed with error: -6600 for url: afp://Cesar%20Dario%[email protected]/Backup

    I get a similar error. I recently added a login password for the computer the backup disk is connected to on the network. I always get authentication errors now. I added the login, I thought, to keychain but still fails.

    Several times today I have gotten a popup message. "Time Machine error while creating backup folder".  I click OK, and then the message appears again after a hour or so.  I am using a WD My Book external drive as my backup media.  I looked at the drive in Finder and the older (yesterday and beyond) backup folders are there.
