Time machine is backing up but can't go back in time.

I started using time machine this morning on my MB Pro. It has about 5 backups listed. Only problem is, when I click the time machine icon, it only shows the first screen and will not go back. The timeline on the right only shows now. It's not going back the few hours it has stored.

I had an issue which started very recently; I went into Time Machine to perform a small restore, I found that I couldn't move back in time and whats more the cancel button no longer worked; I had some difficulty getting out of the Time Machine interface.
After looking at settings, the machines Hostname, performing a restart - nothing cleared the issue.
As this was a recent change in operation I thought a little about the software changed in the last week; my Antivirus has upgraded.
Looking at the setting I explicitly excluded the Time Machine drive from any scans; now everything is fine!
So, if you are having issues, aside from the other checks, any Antivirus may be having a side effect and an impact on Time Machine.

  • Time Machine changed my driver permissions - can't change back

    Hello,
I've been using my external hard drive for about 6 months to backup my work, never had a problem.
Today I mounted the drive, as usual, and a window came up asking me if I wanted to use it for time machine backup. I clicked OK, thinking I could backup my new work, then when I saw that I would have to format my drive, I decided it was not what I needed, since I have all my old work in it.
So I de-selected my drive from the window where it asks which drive to be used for time machine, and turned TM off before doing any operations.
Since then my hard disk has become "read-only"!! Luckily I haven't lost any of my work, but I am now unable to set the permission back to "read - write". The "Repair Disk Permissions" button is greyed out.. and if I do GetInfo, I can only see it is read only, but I have no option to change that.
Any idea why time machine changed my settings before I even used it??
How can I change it back?
    Thank you

Not it all makes sense. I should go kill him.
I rather suspect that TM is at fault. TM drives have to be formatted HFS and by what you describe it sounds like it started reformatting the drive when you stopped it.

  • Time Machine copies all files, but keeps growing during back up

    Hi there!
I just bought a new internal HD for my MacBook, because the old one is full. Now I hooked my external HD to my MacBook and selected this HD for backing up in TM. It said at the beginning that it would back up ±150 GB. When it got there after backupping a whole day, it kept on growing! 150GB became 160GB and is now even 175GB! I really don't get this, it doesn't really seem to be needing a coffeebreak soon, so I don't know how long this will go on. Is this a common issue?
My internal HD isn't even 175GB large, so this is why it's extra 'weird'.
    Thanks a lot in advance!!

    I'm sorry if I've been unclear! I am a computer n00b...
Anyway, the current internal drive is indeed 160GB, I bought a 500GB to replace it.
I used an external HD to back up the old one, so I could replace the internal HD and restore my system as it was.
But I didn't know I needed 320GB of free space in order to make a back up of the 160GB drive.
    EDIT
When TM didn't stop at 145 (aprox. the data I have on my drive), even though it said it was finished, I didn't know what was going on (still don't). So I think I must get myself a new external also? Isn't there other software for this?

Yes, if they are not exclude then TM backs them up.

    Here's the scoop, new friend.....
When you boot into Time Machine you'll get the same OS X Utilities screen as you would if you booted into the Recovery HD. So, from there go into Disk Utilities to erase/format your internal drive. After that's done, back out to the OS X Utilities screen and select the restore option. Just follow the prompts to select the TM back up date you want to restore from and where to restore it to. Pretty straight forward.

On imac 10.6.8 using current version of Aperture.  How can I access the Aperture Library  on my external hard drive that I use with time machine for backup?  I can only access the application but not the library..

Go into Time Machine (the program not the bundle on the extrnal disk) and using Time Machine's browser go to the Folder where the library lives. You could look in the library bundle in Time Machine but that won't really tell you much,
If you want to make sure it truely has backed up your library you will need to restore it and open the restored library with Aperture.
If all this still has you confused you need to read up on Time Machine in order to get a feel for how it works, for what it is doing and for how to restore files from it.

I have a Seagate Freeagent 1TB external drive that ejects it's self in the middle of the time machine backup, then disappears and can't be found unless I turn it off and back on again. Any ideas?

Hmmm.. sorry to jump in but...
I Wish I had seen this before I got mine.
Mine has been doing this auto eject stuff too.
I think I just plugged it in and TM let me select it but is it possible
I should have reformatted it with DU first, like with all the WD drive problems ?
Is it too late for that ?
Or just try to return it or get rid of it ?
    TIA

I had tried COMMAND+ALT+R which led me to directly to INTERNET RECOVERY via wifi. After 1 hour or so it dropped me at the same point.
I've tried MIGRANT ASSISTANCE as well, it kept on LOOKING FOR OTHER COMPUTERS even though I clicked on TIME MACHINE BACK UP USING EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE

My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk) for a few weeks.  This same disk was used to back-up the Pro earlier, and to migrate from the Pro to the Air.  Can I do this "back-migration" from the Air to the Pro?  Is it maybe better just to migrate the specific folders (Outlook email, Office docs) I am sure I need?

Do not attempt to copy files/folders from a Time Machine backup. Only use the Time Machine application to restore from the backup.
Click on a Finder window and select Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "restore" and select "restore items backed up with time machine" from the hints list. You will find these two articles:
Recover items using Time Machine and Spotlight
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can use Time Machine with Spotlight to recover lost or deleted items.
Note: You can retrieve earlier versions of TextEdit documents from within TextEdit. For more information, see:
View and restore past versions of documents
Open a Finder window and type a search word or phrase in the search field in the upper-right corner.
Select a location to search in the location bar.
Refine the results by specifying search criteria. Narrow down Spotlight search results
Open the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, then choose Enter Time Machine.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the Time Machine backups. Your search is performed in every window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore.
The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it’s returned to the Documents folder.
Restore items backed up with Time Machine
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can easily bring back lost items or recover older versions of files.
You can use Time Machine within many apps. If the iCloud Documents & Data feature is turned on, you can recover older versions of iCloud documents as well as regular documents.
Open a window for the item you want to restore. For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. To recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail. To recover an iCloud document, open the document’s app, choose File > Open, then click iCloud to view the iCloud documents for that app.If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
From the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, choose Enter Time Machine. A message may appear while your Mac connects to the backup disk.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the snapshots and backups.White tick marks represent snapshots stored on your internal drive (portable computers only). Pink tick marks represent backups stored on your backup disk. If a tick mark appears dimmed or grayed, there’s no backup available or the backup disk is not connected.
For more information about an item, double-click it.The windows in Time Machine behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore. You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk. The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder.

I just bought and backed up my computer and time machine with a "Seagate BackUp Plus for Mac". Now my time machine is empty. Panicked. can anyone help?

    Lets start over...
Please restart the network.. shut down everything..
Restart in order.. modem.. router.. if different to TC.. or TC.. client devices.. wait 2min between each startup.
If the TC does not show up on the computer, in finder.. then we need more info.. what OS are you running?
Does the TC show up in Airport utility? Are you running wireless or ethernet?
If you still have issues.. plug the TC directly into the computer by ethernet.
Do a full factory reset of the TC.. and see if it now shows up.
Please tell us exactly what model TC it is and how old.. the A1xxx model number from the base will help if you don't know.
You take a screen shot of the TC opened in finder.
    eg..
My TC is named Tardis4.. click on it.. and then open the data folder.. on this one called Tardisdata.
Then take a screen shot of it so we can see what the problem is.. screenshot.. with area selection.. control + shift + 4 .. the picture goes into the desktop.. and then you click the picture icon in the posting web page controls and select the picture.

  • Time Machine Appears to Backup but Cannot Retrieve Files

I'm having problems with my Time Machine setup and I hope someone can give me some tips to get it working properly.
A few weeks ago I took my iMac into the Apple Store for some repair work. They created a Time Machine backup of my hard drive using a WD Elements 2TB external USB drive before performing the work. After the work was completed, they rebuilt my hard drive with my existing data. Only bad thing is all of my data now has the creation date of November 30h. Okay, I'll survive that part.
Now that I am home I decided that I want to start using Time Machine in my daily workflow for the first time.
    Here's what I know:
1). TM appears to be backing up properly. My oldest backup is November 29th, which corresponds to the first backup the Apple Store did.
2). My last backup was less than an hour ago, as it should be.
3). When TM is mounted and backing up I can see 'Backups.backupdb' mount. I can also look inside of it and view each consecutive backup, both hourly and daily. (no monthly backups have taken place yet).
4). When TM completes the back up, 'Backups.backupdb' is unmounted, again as it should be.
    Here's what happens:
1). If I go into Time Machine as if to retrieve a file it defaults to the top level and not the folder I may be in. On the right side, instead of all of the previous dates, all I see is 'today' and 'now.'
2). I created a test folder, placed some files inside it, deleted a few, and tried to retrieve them with no luck. I can locate the folder in its current state but cannot go back to find the deleted files.
Here's what I've done so far:
1). Read many of the helpful posts and files from pondini:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2057525
    2). Followed the instructions here:
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/D5.html
3). as well as done a full reset as explained here:
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/A4.html
Is there something else that I am missing? If someone could point me in the right direction to solve this issues, I'd be grateful.
    Thanks

Thanks for clarifying my monthly backup comment. I went and downloaded the Widget as requested. Here's what I found. I pasted the results from the three most recent backups. Let me know if you need additional information.
    Thanks for your help!
    Chris
