Time Machine or iTunes causes Photoshop CS4 to crash?

My husband and I both have identical 20" iMacs (see my signature). He uses Photoshop CS4 daily and Photoshop will crash for no apparent reason we can find and he's lost a lot of work over the past couple of months. He saves his work a lot but this shouldn't be happening in the first place.
I've searched the forums and haven't found this particular problem discussed. The crashes seem to happen most often when either Time Machine is running a backup or when iTunes is open. There's no particular Photoshop command that he's using that seems to cause the problem. The crashes can also happen when neither iTunes nor Time Machine is running but seem to happen more often when one or the other or both are running.
Can someone point me in the direction I need to look to solve this? It's a really annoying problem. I'm going to post this to the Adobe forums too.
Thanks
Kim

It sounds like a coincidence, since it's not consistent with either TM or iTunes.
He should have "Crash Logs" for Photoshop that may contain a clue.
Use the Console app on his Mac (in the Applications/Utilities folder).
When it starts, click +*Show Log List+* in the toolbar, then navigate in the sidebar that opens up to the "Crash Reporter" folders (there may be 2 or more of them). Find the most recent for Photoshop. Copy and post the couple of pages of it in a new thread in the +Using Leopard+ forum, as you'll be likely to find more Photoshop users and folks who can read crash logs there, and perhaps on the Adobe forums as well.

  • Time Machine Backup is causing Airport Express to Crash

I have an iMac with a 1TB external drive which it has been using to do time machine backups. I recently decided to backup my Macbook to the same drive using the same disk over the network.
It starts fine and then after 20-40 minutes or so the Airport Express stops working and it needs to be unplugged to get it to work again.
Any thoughts on why this might be happening and what I could do to fix the problem?
    iMac G4 with 1TB external Drive 10.5.8
    Macbook White with 10.6.2
    Airport Exress with 6.2 firmware
    Thanks!

From the iMac, see what's on the external drive. There should be one set of backups in a folder named Backups.backupdb (for the iMac), and a sparsebundle for the MacBook.
If they're both in the same partition, I'd suggest first turning TM on the MacBook off, deleting the sparse bundle and partitioning the drive, so TM on each Mac has it's own, exclusive space. See #6 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. Those instructions are for adding a TM partition to an existing drive with other data on it, but the steps are the same.
Then set up sharing, etc., again for the new partition, and set the MacBook up to back up to the new partition.
If you have trouble backing-up that way, start with the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it. If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, what you've done, and the results.

Prior to the subscription models—and of course that includes CS4—the Photoshop license was platform specific, either Windows or Mac, but not both.  Your CS4 Windows serial number ("key") will never work on the Mac version.
CS4 is out of the loop as far as requesting a platform swap for a nominal fee.  It is no longer supported by Adobe in any way. A platform swap required the destruction of your PC version, so you could not use both the PC and the Mac versions.
For a time, you could have used CS4 to upgrade to CS6 for about $200, but that time window has closed by now.  Now you would have to own a legitimate version of CS5 in order to be eligible to buy an upgrade to CS6.
You can of course buy the full version of Photoshop CS6 Extended for $1,000 from the Adobe store:
    Creative Suite 6
Alternatively, you can subscribe to Photoshop CC and Photoshop CC2014  on a monthly basis without ever owning the software.  If you stop paying monthly, the software ceases to work.
The cheapest subscription is the Photography plan, which includes both Photoshop and Lightroom for $10 a month.

  • Photoshop CS4 keeps crashing - /w Snow Leopard

Photoshop CS4 keeps crashing for one of our artists. It crashes when they try to save their work to their local harddisk. It crashes when having Illustrator open, it also crashes when having two Photoshop files open same time.
Here is the puzzling thing, our 2 artists just got brand new Mac's a few months ago, and yet only 1 of them is experiencing these Photoshop crash problems.
Also, last week I completely reformated and reinstalled the OS (of the guy having issues) and a brand new installation of CS4 but unfortunately still crashing. I have the crash report in a text file, but I guess I cannot upload it.
Any recommendations? Only thing he has done since the crashes was install Font Explorer and all the Sotware/Adobe Updates.

My photoshop CS4 keeps crashing while I am in the middle of editing a photo. I am running Mac OS X 10.9.4. I have tried to contact support and I was directed here.

You were redirected to this user forum because CS4 is no longer supported by Adobe at all.
We'll need a lot more info before we can help.
You'll have to manually determine whether Photoshop CS4 is updated to version 11.0.2 (the Adobe auto updater is most unreliable in CS4), and give us plenty of other information.
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand, such as your platform (Mac or Win), exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop and of Bridge, machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, video card specs, what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far, what error message(s) you receive, if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them, etc., someone may be able to help you.

  • Entering Time Machine From Mail Gives Photoshop Error!

    Hello everybody,
This is a very strange one: If I enter Time Machine when Mail is in front, and if Photoshop is opened, I always get this error from Photoshop: "Could not complete your request because of a program error."
    What happens is this:
    • I choose the Enter Time Machine command (Entrer dans Time Machine in French, in fact).
    • I hear a beep, but the computer goes right into Time Machine, without a hitch.
    • I can do anything I want in TM.
    • After that, when I activate Photoshop, I see the Photoshop error dialog. I close this dialog and Photoshop works perfectly well.
This happens whether a file is opened in Photoshop or not. It does not happen when Photoshop is in front, +*it happens only when Mail is in front*+.
    I am puzzled...
    RTP

    Hi joshz,
Thanks for jumping in. Well, this is most surprising. There is no record of any error caused by this, no reference to this one way or the other, no error of any kind... I searched with different keywords, Adobe, Photoshop, Time Machine, TM, Mail, to no avail. Anyway it's easy as I can reproduce this error dialog at will: With Mail in front, I enter TM, hear the beep coming from Photoshop (!!!), get out of TM and there it is in Photoshop.
Then I look into the console. An error reported by this event should be the last one and dated correctly, right? Well, there is nothing new.
What literally baffles me is the fact that this happens only when Mail is the active application when I enter TM. I tried every other combination to no avail.
Other info about memory in my answer to orangekay.
I must say that it was very thoughtful of you to translate your post in French. I do appreciate the courtesy. And yes, your French is certainly acceptable, taking into account that it is not your mother tongue and that you probably do not use it very often. The reason why I mentioned the command name in French is that I was not sure of the exact name in English as my OS is in French. OK, I speak it with what my Hoosier friends call "an accent". But then I tell them... "Look who's talking!"

  • TIme Machine and iTunes

When I perform a back up using the time machine and my external hard drive, will the music in my itunes and the photos in iphoto be backed up as well? Thanks!

Everything is included unless you exclude it. How you do that is:
    1. Open System Prefrences and click on Time Machine
    2. Then click on Options. If you want to exclude something click the + sign and use Finder to locate it and then add it. On your next TM backup that item willl be excluded.

  • Time Machine and iTunes: hd failure, tm restore, itunes permissions problms

    Hi,
    Can someone please help me?
I had my brothers old laptop, a powerbook g4 al 15" 1.25 ghz, 2 gig ram, 80g hd. The hd failed a couple days ago with big clicks that sounded like that arm slapping backing a forth. So, I bought a new 160 gig hard drive from ifixit, and replaced that yesterday. I installed leopard. I wanted a fresh install, so I just installed in normally, and then went manually into the external hard drive (500gb), and tried getting some of my music back from itunes in the time machine backup folders. It did not work well, and I could not find all of them, so, I re-instered the leopard install disc.
I restored from Time Machine (not migrate because i did not know about it at the time), and have what looks like my old laptop back. Now I went to copy my itunes music from my laptop to my iphone, and here is my problem:
My iTunes now says that 49 of my files are not authorized to play on this computer. I could give the exact error; it is: "..." well actually I can't right now because I am running onyx to try to fix disk permissions, so when that is over I could give the error message.
Does anyone know what to do?
The end of all this is to backup all my iTunes music on a disk (which includes downloads from emusic.com), and then delte the whole OS, and reinstall leopard, again, with a fresh install, but this time with my itunes restored.
    Thanks,
    JW

in that case it shouldn't count as a new computer when you authorize it. If for some strange reason it does count as a new computer you can deauthorize all your currently authorized computers and then authorize the ones you need.
To do that in iTunes go to Store menu->View my accounts, and then click Deauthorize All. If you don't see this option, it's because you don't have five authorized computers.

  • Time Machine backup iTunes and iPhoto as well?

Does time machine also backup from iTunes and iPhoto libraries?
Meaning that I don't need to separately backup those two?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine makes a backup of every file which is in your Mac hard drive, including your iPhoto and iTunes library (unless you have excluded them from the backup, which is not usual). However, you are free to make a second backup of them if you want.

  • Kext cleanup, now time machine and itunes not working

I cleaned up all my kext files from Sep 2013 back (as suggested in an article) to address the kernel_task overload, but now itunes won't play (play button works but songs do not move forward), time machine will not restore backup and no audio comes from google chrome. Do I need to reinstall each individual program/application? Will a reinstall of Mavericks work?

The article was written by an idiot.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • Time Machine and iTunes Issue

    What I'm using first: OS X 10.7.1 - iTunes 10.4 - 1TB external Time Machine Drive - apx 90,000 songs -  A big pain in the a**
So I had a problem with about 90% of my music file paths being not correct and iTunes not finding the files. Basically I had about 40GB of music on my internal HD and the remaining 400GB on my external. I wanted to move my 40GB to my external and have iTunes recognize this. So I make a backup before I do anything and begin working on it. Copied the 40gb to the external and deleted all my iTunes info with the intent to re-import the music and then replace the .xml file so I would have all my playlist, play counts, ratings, ect. I had read a “how to” and understood the process and all would have worked well if……..
The Time Machine does not have the .xml file and is missing about half of my old music in that same folder. Why in the world would Time Machine not have my old .xml file anywhere? I ended up looking through ALL of my old backups dating back to June and not one is there….
Is there any way to find/recover this file?

    Solved!  At last!
I cannot say exactly which step was the key, so here are most of the steps I took.  Hopefully this helps someone.
    1. Took the steps in Invalid or incorrect Certificates including reboot.
    2. Took the steps in Edit your Keychain including reboot.
    3. Downloaded and manually reinstalled Security Update 2015-004.
    4. Repaired permissions and directories with Recovery reboot.
    5. Took the steps in Invalid or incorrect Certificates including reboot.
    6. Took the steps in Edit your Keychain including reboot.
I've gone through some of these steps multiple times, just hoping it would work that time...
Today -- when I went into Mail.app, it whined about the certs for me.com servers -- so I made *that* always trusted.  And this time, iTunes.app didn't complain about any certs!  And this time, Software Update.app didn't complain about any certs!  And it successfully applied the three-week delayed updates!
So I'm hoping it's all done and done.  OMG, frustrating along the way!

  • Time Machine and iTunes - huge iTunes backups

I've been using Time Machine since Jan 2009 for my MacBook. I'm having an issue that I don't understand with iTunes. I use the utility TimeTracker (highly recommended) to find out why my backup drive was almost full...turns out it was making a full VMWare image everytime I made a change to Windows. Easy fix.
I still noticed however that I have two backups of over 40GB. Investigating with TimeTracker, it is iTunes. I've checked and it seems the files backed up are not new...most of them anyway.
My question is this...if I restore these backups, will they clog my iTunes with a bunch of duplicates? Don't think I can go through them one at a time. I have a utility to check for duplicates but it seems a pretty laborious process.
    Thanks for any insights.

if you restore just individual items from the itunes folder and these items exist at present you'll be given a choice to keep both copies or to only keep the restored copies. I suggest you choose the latter. then there won't be any duplicates.

  • Time machine and itunes backups?

The size/volume of my music library on my Time Machine backups is far smaller than my library on the imac itself. Does Time machine backup all music files or only those you loaded via CD. The size difference is similar to the music purchased from itunes store. is that relevant or just a coincidence?, thks, canyon

if you restore just individual items from the itunes folder and these items exist at present you'll be given a choice to keep both copies or to only keep the restored copies. I suggest you choose the latter. then there won't be any duplicates.

  • Full Restore from Time Machine, will iTunes recognize my iPhone or...

    Hi All:
About ago my MB Pro was stolen. Fortunately, I had strong security settings and was diligent about backing up to Time Machine.
I am about to purchase a new iMac to replace the MB Pro, and will be doing a complete restore from time machine to recover my data. However, since my computer was stolen, life has gone on. I have purchased music from iTunes via my iPhone and also added many new contacts. Does anyone know what will happen the first time I try to sync my iPhone to my fully restored image on the new computer? Will iTunes recognize the iPhone as it was before and do a 2 way sync (new music and contacts sent back to iMac) or will it want to override all data on the iPhone and replace it with the existing contacts and music from the restore?
    Thanks!
    John

All of your iPhone data (the iPhone backup done by iTunes) is stored in your user folder's library as: USER/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup. I believe some iPhone data is also stored here: USER/Library/Application Support/SyncServices. For some reason, the folks at Apple thought that this was NOT information that needed to be backed up in Time Machine.
So unless you copied and pasted the backup folder into your external drive, your migration of info from the drive to the iMac will not carry any iPhone info to the new computer.
That being said, I'm not exactly sure what the iPhone will do when being plugged in. It will probably ask if you want the phone to be associated with the user account on that iMac, and upon selecting yes it MIGHT try to send your contacts, calendars, etc. to the new iMac. I am not sure about this--if I were you I'd ask a Mac Genius at an Apple Store or call AppleCare. But the Apple Store would be your best bet. The iPhone would not be able to send music, but that's not a big deal since you have it all in the backup anyways.
