Time Machine UI non-responsive for single user - due to Samsung SSD read defect

This is informational - no question. It's an unusual Time Machine problem that may be of interest.
Every month or so I test my Time Capsule backups with a routine restore. Recenly that failed -- the Time Machine Restore UI did no respond to mouse or keyboard actions. The rest of Time Machine behaved normally -- I could cancel or select a backup. Beyond that - no response. Very occasionally, if I waited a while, I could change directories.
On further testing my other user accounts worked normally. The problem was only with one account -- the account with by far the heaviest use. I wiped my Time Capsule drive and recreated my 3 machine backups but the problem persisted. Repairing disk permissions had no effect. Repairing my Samsung EVO SSD disk from the emergency partition disk utility did help -- but repair took an unusually long time.
Answer - I think this was related to the Samsung EVO SSD read bug. [1] My guess is that some parts of my SSD related to directory structure were becoming extremely slow to read, and this caused something in Time Machine to hang (maybe if I'd waited 30 min or so it would have become responsive, I think my SSD was very close to compete failure). After applying the EVO SSD fix my SSD was far faster (startup went from 20 sec to about 1-2 sec) and Time Machine restore, while not zippy, behaved normally.

Thanks for the reminder.. I just replaced my hard disk in 2011 mini with a 500GB Samsung 840 evo which looked cheapest and fine for what I wanted... it was like a few days before this info came out.. so I have not experienced any slow down.. I had around 100GB on the drive.. so I followed the instructions..
Created a boot USB using the iso from samsung on a windows machine using http://rufus.akeo.ie/
This was really simple.. so if you have access to a windows just do it this way.
Plug the USB into the Mac and hold options at boot and then select windows from the selection of boot devices. It came up with a very familiar DOS screen and I was able to do the firmware upgrade and repair.. took around 30min so no biggie..
I think as long as you have plenty of free space these things are fairly easy.

I created a form with Single Choice fields, 4 days with times listed. But, I want the user to only be able to choose one time, and the time chosen to be unavailable for other users. How do I do this? I have 4 blocks of Single Choice fields in order for the summary page to give me each day in the final report. But, I need the user to be able to make a selection of any day and time and that apointment to no longer be available to future users when they log in. Plus, when the user clicks on the time, they are unable to change their mind and choose another time. I'm afraid not.    It's not rocket science but you need to do some coding.
You'll need to find a script (php) and save it to your local site folder.  Then reference the script in your form's action attribute like so.
         <form action="path/form-to-email-script.php" >
The input fields in your HTML form need to exactly match the script variables.
I'm  assuming you're hosted on a Linux server which uses PHP code.  Linux servers are also case sensitive, so upper case names are not the same as lower case names.  It's usually best to use all lower case names in your form and script to avoid confusion.

  • Time Machine is not working for me

There is no way that Time Machine is working right for me. Backups are taking a split second and are reporting crazy small amounts. Example, I have added to my Mac 1 gig of movies and 1 gig of images. I backed up today and Time Machine reported 28k of material being backed up and it took less than 1 second to start and finish the backup. None of these files are in areas that Time Machine has been told to not back up.
How do I get Time Machine to work again? Please help me. TIA.

Agreed. This particular glitch doesn't affect a lot of users, apparenly, and Apple is aware of it and hopefully it will be fixed soon.
I've learned over the years (mostly the hard way, of course ), never to trust my backups to a single app or piece of hardware: no app is perfect, and all hardware fails, sooner or later.
Like many here, I keep both full Time Machine backups, plus a "bootable clone" on a separate external HD. I use CarbonCopyCloner, many use the similar SuperDuper. That gives me the best of both types of backups, plus of course a completely separate, independent backup.
CCC is donationware; SD has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do updates instead of full replacements, or scheduling. Either is easily found via Google.
And/or, see Kappy's post on Basic Backup, complete with links to the web sites of each product.
ps: glad it's sorted out, and thanks for the star.

  • Can't exec /bin/sh for single user

    Hi,
When I boot up my iMac G5 it sits on the gray screen with the apple and spinning "doing something" icon, and then goes to a terminal window telling me:
"can't exec /bin/sh for single user: Input/output error"
It started doing this last night after multiple beachball of death situations. Anyone have any ideas? Or is it time for this old machine to be put out to pasture?
    Thanks
    Mungo

    Hi Mungo,
invalid key length is a serious issue that can sometimes be fixed by "heavy duty" utilites like DiskWarrior and Drive Genius.
If you don't have enough room to re-install the OS, though, you have seriously overfilled it and they may not be able to deal with the problem either.
You should always aim to keep at least 15% free space on the drive, preferably more. On my 250 Gig internal drive, for example, I see the beginning of stability and speed problems when I get down to below around 30 gigs of free space. It varies a bit depending on what you use your Mac for, but my own preference is to always aim for 50 Gigs free on this 250 Gig drive.
You have to fix the "keys out of order" problem before you even think of re-installing the OS.
The best solution is to reformat the drive. It is unlikely that it actually needs replacing. However I still think you should buy another drive, but an external one, if you don't have one already.
My approach to your problem would be:
    1) Go and buy a nice big external firewire drive if you don't have one already (ideally at least twice the size of your internal).
    2) Install OSX on the external drive (You may want to partition it into two volumes first, keeping one partition to store a "cloned backup" of your internal and one for general usage, overflow storage, etc)
    3) Boot from the external HD and copy across your precious stuff from the internal drive to the external. (If you have created two partitions on the external you could use the excellent utility "SuperDuper" to "clone" the internal to the second partition - the one witout the OS installed on it)
    4) Reformat the internal drive, preferably using the single "zeroing" option.
    5) Re-install the OS and software on your internal drive
    6) Copy back your data (documents, music, movies etc) to your internal but make sure you leave plenty of free space on it. If you have a large music library , or lots of movies, for example, you might want to keep them on the external, rather than putting them back)
    7) From now on use one partition of your external drive for regular "cloned" backups of the internal and the other for general storage overflow etc.
    Cheers

  • Is there a way to access Time Machine files associated with an old user name?

My iMac was running super slow and there was a bunch of programs, etc. that I wanted to get rid of anyway so I thought I would do a "clean install" from my Snow Leopard disc.  I moved items on my desktop to my Seagate external drive and then unplugged it.  I have had Time Machine saving to it for a long time so I was confident I could just move a few items (pictures, music, etc.) back on to my hard drive when the install was completed.  To my surprise, when I went to Time Machine I found the items I had moved from my desktop but no earlier versions of my other files.
In researching this issue a little bit, it appears that perhaps I created a new user name when I did the install and that my historical items are likely still on the Seagate but stored somewhere associated with my old user name.  I understand that if I can change my user name back to the original that I may be able to access the items and transfer the items I want.  To compound the situation, I have no idea what my old user name even was.
Does this make sense to Mac experts out there?
If so, is there a way to see the old user names and access the Time Machine files?
I've been avoiding telling my wife that I may have lost all our kid photos so I'm desperately hoping someone can help.

The problem is that Time Machine detects your new OS X copy as a new Mac and it doesn't let you access to your backups. To access to them, see > http://pondini.org/TM/E3.html
Another option would be to access to your backups manually. Open a Finder window, select the Time Machine drive in the sidebar and go to Backups.backupdb > your computer's name > one of the backups > your partition's name, and copy the data you want

Right.  Here's what the permissions look like from the Finder Command I:

  • Is there a way to combine two backups on separate disks created by time machine into one on a single disk?

Is there a way to combine two backups on separate disks created by time machine into one on a single disk? One backup is a continuation of the other and was created when I rec'd a message that the 1st disk was full. I'm using a iMac (late 2010) and both external drives are WD. Thanx.

With the timeline selected, go to File/Export/Movie and export each as a DV-AVI video.
You can then combine those AVIs into a new project with virtually no loss of quality.

  • Time machine makes 30 backups for the last two days, no backups for any earlier times: is there a way to control it?

I've been running Time Machine in the background for as long as I've owned my current Mac--- a few months.  It is a completely generic set-up: it's a desktop (rarely shut off or asleep) connected to an external hard drive that is much larger (1 TB) than my internal hard drive (0.5 TB), and Time Machine is configured to save backups of my whole internal drive to the external drive.  The external is half-full, and the internal is a little more than half-full.  I often hear my external crunching away, working on something.
I recently needed to access an old file, so I went into Time Machine mode on the folder where it had been deleted a few weeks ago.  While I'm not upset that it isn't available (it's my own fault for deleting it), I didn't expect the Time Machine to have such a bad distribution of saved backups.  There are 30 backup snapshots of the past two days, and nothing earlier.  I was expecting something more like a few from today, a few from this week, a few from this month, and a few going all the way back in time--- a broader distribution.
I don't see any way to control this in the Time Machine Preferences (in fact, very little control at all).  Is there a secret way to control it, or some tip to ensure a more useful distribution of saved snapshots?
    Thanks,
    -- Jim

Thanks, but it doesn't exactly address my question.  TimeMachineEditor allows me to set the intervals or times when backups occur, but it doesn't control the algorithm that decides which snapshots should be deleted.  My problem was that Time Machine chose to delete all of the old snapshots and keep only the most recent ones: I'd like it to keep more of the recent ones than the old ones, but still keep some old ones.
In fact, the (unmodifyable) text on the Time Machine control panel says that it keeps:
hourly backups for the past 24 hours
daily backups for the past month
weekly backups for all previous months
That would be perfect if it were true.
Perhaps the algorithm did the wrong thing because the size of my internal hard drive varied quite a lot a few days ago: a process got out of control and used up all of my internal disk space.  I killed the process and deleted its output (several times), so my internal disk eventually went back down to normal.  Perhaps in the intervening hours, Time Machine made a backup, once an hour, and used up all of the external drive space.  When it had to choose between keeping "weekly backups of previous months" and "hourly backups of the past 24 hours", it chose to keep hourly backups of the past 24 hours.  This was the wrong choice in my case (it was the unwanted output) and is probably the wrong choice in most cases.
Is there a way to control the algorithm that decides which backups to keep and which to delete?  I would have it delete the hourly, daily, and weekly backups in a way that preserves their relative distribution.
By the way, while I have made it sound like my problem was a runaway log file (something that would be easy to put in an excluded directory with Time Machine's "Options" button), it was a VirtualBox snapshot merge.  The data in question are precious, but were unnecessarily copied many times while VirtualBox failed to merge them properly.  I can't simply exclude a directory: I'm talking about a more general problem.
    Thanks!

  • Change NWA language for single user

    Hello, gurus!
The question is stated above: how can I change NWA interface language only for single user?
Users in our BPM system are fetched from Active Directory therefore I cannot change (as they advise) user for my user from NWA. It is inactive.
    Is there any other solution?

It shows that users are stored in LDAP.
Also I'd like to draw your attention to language preferences in my browser
Desirable language (English) is specified as recommended in guidelines, but NWA nevertheless is showed in Russian as you can see.

Has anyone come across this gem during start-up? it's outputting
init: can't exec /bin/sh for single user: No such file or directory
init: can't exec /bin/sh for single user: No such file or directory
init: can't exec /bin/sh for etc/rc: No such file or directory
This shows up after the apple logo on start-up. Any ideas?

That message suggests that Mac OS X isn't able to open a shell or run the startup scripts because one of the items it needs is missing. Fixing this issue will require reinstalling Mac OS X.

Say, that does sound messed up! But so far sounds like a Hard Drive/Software problem.
Boot from the Install CD/DVD, but do not install. Answer ONLY the "What Language" question and wait for the MenuBar to be drawn. Then Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu.
Select your Hard drive and click ( Repair ) Run it again until it comes clean or gets stuck. If stuck, write down the messages and post them here.
It is also a good idea while you are up to do a ( Repair Permissions ). This only checks the things the Installer installed originally, but that is a lot of stuff. \[Once your Mac is up and running off the Hard Drive, you should Repair Permissions again.]
A Mac that cannot boot from an appropriate Installer Disc has a Hardware problem.
