Time Machine; Using Stora NAS; error message

Home network with a Stora NAS. Time Machine recognizes (sees) the NAS and the volume, but when backing up I get the following message.
"The backup disk image "//Volumes/xxxxx-1/name of mini.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 45)
Disk Utility does not see the NAS.
Thanks

That doesn't necessarily mean it's going to work. To work well with Time Machine, it must meet Apple's requirements here: Disks that can be used with Time Machine.
I'm not familiar with this product, but I don't see anything in their documentation about it using +Apple File Protocol (AFP) file sharing,+ and I don't see any claim of it being compatible with Time Machine. (And, of course, some that claim compatibility don't meet all the criteria, and don't work well.)
when backing up I get the following message.
"The backup disk image "//Volumes/xxxxx-1/name of mini.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 45)
It's a long shot, but you might want to try renaming your Computer, etc., per #C9 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Disk Utility does not see the NAS.
That's correct; DU may be able to see a +sparse bundle+ on a network, but it can't be used to partition, format, erase, etc., a network drive.
If the renaming doesn't help, you'll need to contact Netgear.

  • OSStatus error 2 while configuring time machine on stora NAS

anyone have the same problem? Have you gon any suggestion?
My stora is up-to-date on 12 november 2011.

I had the same problem. WD does indeed support Time Machine set up on the WD World.
The acrobat file walking you through the 15 second set up [hurrah] can be found here: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=mbworld [click on the user guide link to download].
My problem was that I was trying to login using my user name rather than the wd_backup that is required via Time Machine.... did not read the set up instructions very carefully.

  • "Valid address necessary to use store credit" ERROR MESSAGE

I have been unable to complete the rental process.
I bought Apple TV and was able to connect to my WI-FI, ugrade the firmware, enter my personal settings. Ther problem is that when I select a movie and click to rent it, it connects to iTunes Store and comes back with an error message about "valid address needed to use store credit"
I checked my .mac account personal and billing settings and everything seems OK. I am not even sure what "store credit" means. I am trying to execute a transaction with a credit card on file...
    Thanks.RS.

I had the same problem. I tried logging in using my .mac address, thinking that that would work. Is it supposed to work? Doesn't work for me. Not only that, but I can't figure out how to go back and correct it and change it to something else.
Why would Apple let me buy music and movies using my .mac account, and not rent movies? Or is this pilot error and I'm doing something stupid?
    Suggestions welcome.

  • Time Machine and Iomega NAS - The operation couldn't be completed. Error 2

Hi - I sure hope someone is able to help?
I have just purchased an Iomega Storcenter IX2-200 4TB NAS device.
I have tried to use it as a TimeMachine device but when I select the TimeMachine disk from the preferences panel I receive the error 'The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 2.)'
I have not created any users etc, the device is as it came out of the box. The TimeMachine disk automatically appeared in the Finder when I connected the IX2
Is there a 'special' userid/pw I should be using for the TimeMachine? When prompted for those details from the TM preferences I use admin/<password> and receive the above error - any other entry results in a message stating that the userid/password info is incorrect.
I don't want to return it because I see it as a useful device to back up my three Macs.
If anyone is able to help they will be my friend for life!!
    Kind regards,
    Dave.

The anwser is quite simple. Enter the Storcenter's configuration page en go to "settings", "Back up" and " Time Machine". When you configured the NAS correctly there is a + button roughly in the middle of the page.
Press this button and enter the name of the Mac and the ethernet/mac adress (this is the adress of the network adapter you use to connect to the network, something like aa.11.bb.22.cc.33, can be found on the advanced section of the networkadapter settings). Click "ok", log off and close the window. You can now configure time machine using the administrators name and password.
(sorry if the translation is a bit "foggy", I'm writing this with a Dutch version of the software...)

My guess would be it has created an entirely new backup of your drive when you upgraded to Mavericks.

What IP address does the TC have and what IP does the computer have?
We need more info as we really have no idea what your network looks like.
Modem router, model, type of broadband?
TC setup as bridge or router?
Is the computer getting internet via the TC?
Are you using wireless or ethernet?
Have you set IPv6 correctly to local link in the computer on whichever network client is doing the connection?
Did this work the first time for backup and has now failed? If so simply reboot the TC. It is a constant bug that the TC is lost to the network.

I'm on Mountain Lion and have version 6.1 of AirPort utility so there is no button to "Disconnect All Users"and the only other option of "removing and re-selecting the drive via Time Machine Prefs" doesn't work either. So this will work.
Launch Airport Utility and select the TC "Edit" button, then select the Disks tab. Deselect "Enable File Sharing" and click "Update". The TC will reboot then follow the same procedure and reselect "Enable File Sharing" and click "Update". After TC reboots again you'll be up and running. Not the neatest way to do it but saves having to unplug the TC which risks disk damage and the whole procedure takes less than a minute. The "Enable File Sharing" button seems to have replaced the "Disconnect All Users" button but with the slight disadvantage that it reboots the TC which takes up additional time.

  • Can the time capsule be used as both a time machine backup and NAS storage

Can the time capsule be used as both a time machine backup and NAS storage?   I want to use the drive as external, wireless storage for all of my files so all my PCs, MACs and iOS devices can access the files.  Plus, I want to use the drive for backing up my iMac via time machine.  Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?  If not, are the other suggestions on how I can do this?

Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?
It can, but is really not recommended. Sooner or later there will be a fight for space on the drive between Time Machine and the other files.
If you have plenty of free space on the drive, you can do this......but.....have you thought about how you will back up the "other" files that are stored on the Time Capsule?

  • Time Machine Backup to NAS

I am desperately trying to figure out how to back up my MacBook Pro to a NAS. I am having trouble figuring this out. Here is what I have done so far:
    1. I have enabled Time Machine to work with NAS by using the following command: “defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1”
    2. I rebooted the machine to make sure that the above was implemented
    3. I determined my Computer Name and MAC Address of local computer by using the following command: “ifconfig en0 | grep ether | sed s/://g | sed s/ether//”
    4. I tried to make a new “sparsebundle” on the local disk by using the following command: “sudo hdiutil create -size 500g -type SPARSEBUNDLE -nospotlight -volname "Time_Machine" -fs "Case-sensitive Journaled HFS+" -verbose ./[NAME][MACID]” --> Where [NAME] is the computer name and [MAC_ID] is my MAC address.
But … this process asked for a password. I tried every password I have and none worked. In short, there was no password.
    5. I then looked up this error and learned that this is a problem with my “sudoers” file. Following the directions, I then changed the permissions to allow me to edit this file (I have a stand-alone MacBook Pro that is not part of a work network or controlled by an administrator, so I am also the administrator and don’t know why I had to do this in the first place).
This seemed to work and it processed the “sudo” comment, but then it gave me another error that said: “sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0666, should be 0440”
    6. Continuing to follow the online help, I then rand the “Disk Utility” to fix the problem. But, this just seems to reset the “sudoers” file and I am back to the same problem identified in point #4 above.
So, now I am stuck and don’t know where to go or what to do. Any help would be appreciated very much.

Regarding the NAS, I do believe that my NAS (Buffalo Terastation) does support Apple Talk Protocol.
But does it support Apple File Protocol (AFP) file sharing, as specified in [Disks that can be used with Time Machine|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html]?
Second, Time Machine sees my NAS, but gives me the following error once is tries to execute Time Machine: "Time Machine could not complete the backup." and "The backup disk image "/volumes/Backup/[NAME].sparsebundle" could not be created (error 45)."
In short, it seems like it should work, but it is not.
    Thoughts?
Some folks seem to have made it work to some Buffalo devices; I don't know one of their models from another, much less how they work. That's the downside of using a 3rd-party NAS with Time Machine; the two (very different) operating systems have to work together seamlessly. And when there's a problem, there aren't many folks familiar with both.
Double-check that the NAS's software and setup instructions are up to date, and that you've followed them to the letter.
Have you tried the Buffalo folks? AppleCare?

  • Permissions issue with Time Machine backup store

I am struggling with a Time Machine permissions issue on an iMac running OS X 10.10.2 + OS X Server 4.0.3, and backing itself up to an external USB disk.
Backups complete successfully, but I am unable to carry out any user-level operations such as accessing the "time travel" interface via Enter Time Machine from the menu bar. Invoking Enter Time Machine fails with the error Can't connect to a current Time Machine backup disk. Likewise, although tmutil will correctly list the backup destination, tmutil listbackups produces an error:
    $ tmutil listbackups
2015-02-05 16:53:19.413 tmutil[29181:2324148] Error enumerating (null): The file “Backups.backupdb” couldn’t be opened because you don’t have permission to view it.
No machine directory found for host.
My system logs are full of similar error messages from Finder.
On the back volume, the permisisons to the store are set to owner root and group wheel, and there is an access control list applied to the directory and Backups.backupdb:
    $ ls -lae
    total 2688
    drwxrwxr-x  12 root  wheel      476 Feb  4 22:29 .
    drwxrwxrwt@  9 root  admin      306 Feb  4 11:57 ..
    0: group:everyone deny add_file,add_subdirectory,directory_inherit,only_inherit
    drwxrwx---+  6 root  wheel      204 Jan 30 13:49 Backups.backupdb
    0: group:everyone deny add_file,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,writeattr,writeextattr,chown
    -rwxr-xr-x@  1 root  wheel   115716 Nov 13 02:43 tmbootpicker.ef
The problem is clearly the drwxrwx--- permissions applied to the store. I can temporarily revert these with chmod, after which all the user-level operations described above work correctly. But on the next backup, backupd will revert the permissions to give wheel write access and remove rx privileges for everyone else. It doesn't leave anything in the system log to suggest why it is making this change.
I have a MacBook also running OS X 10.10.2, without the Server pack. This also backs up to a (different) external volume. On this volume the owner, group and access control list for the store are set as above, but the permissions are (and remain) what I would have expected, drwxr-xr-x.
Is there any obvious reason why backupd should be modifying the permissions in this way — and is there any way to stop it?

Thanks - I was seeing exact same problem on one of my client's machines (10.10.2 with OS X Server). I could see wrong group of "wheel" but wasn't certain that just changing to "staff" would be enough - but seems to have sorted things out

The following is a significant excerpt from that thread in which Daksha123 went into BadDrivers.txt file and what it is all about
(It was/is my understanding the Daksha123 was writing at the time from Adobe.) Dakasha in an earlier post in that thread gave the BadDriver.txt deletion fix  which worked for me and so many others. Mine at least on a permanent basis.
    Dakaha123 wrote:
If GPU card is available on a system, PRE9 uses that card for faster and smoother playback. If the driver version installed on the mechine is not compatible with PRE9,  that driver version is stored in BadDrivers.txt file and then PRE9 runs in pure software mode to avoid any further crashes/problems due to that bad driver. It generally happens when driver promises to support some GPU capabilities but actually doesn't support those capabilities at all...
In this scenario, PRE9 shows a warning message to users that driver installed on the machine is not compatible and user should update display driver.  Generally updating to latest display driver should solve this problem: if latest driver is compatibe with PRE9, PRE9 will run in normal mode with faster and smoother playback. (As in case of Hunt & jjjbbbqqq)
Sometimes, as in case of Ron, even the latest driver shows *inconsistent* incomaptibility with PRE9. And in this case deleting "BadDrivers.txt" file should work.
If an user is observing consistent incompatibility (even after deleting "BadDrivers.txt" file the same message pops up again) with the latest driver then that driver is really a bad driver for PRE9 and with that driver PRE9 will always run in pure software mode. There is a very little probability of this kind of card and driver.
    So in summary,
if user is getting warning message : "We have detected an incompatible display driver. To get a better and faster playback performance, please update your display driver "
    1. User should try to get the latest driver for the card available on those systems,
    2. If user is getting same message again even after updating the driver, try to re-launch app after deleting BadDrivers.txt file,
    3. If even deleting “BadDrivers.txt” is not working and they are again getting same message, then that driver is really a bad driver for PRE9. PRE9 will run in pure software mode in that case.

  • I have 2 auxillary disk drives for my MacBokk Pro. Time Machine uses one for backup and I use the other for storage, but I am unable to create a new folder or drag and drop files or folders to the aux drive.

I am unable to create a new folder on either of my auxillary disk drives.  I can access the files and folders that were there when I transferred one of the drives from a PC.  Time machine uses one for backup and I want to use the other to store photos which are large files.  An help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply.  If I reformat the drive will I be able to access the files on it from the MAC.  I do not share the drive with a PC.  The files were originally created on a PC which I no longer use.  I do want to continue to access the files put there by the PC.  I would like to not have to copy them over to the MAC hard drive just to use them.  The second aux drive is new and works fine because it was formatted by the MAC.  I can drag and drop files there and work with just as if they were on the internal drive.

  • How do I retrieve data from a 500 GB Time Machine used as external hard drive?

I have a very particular situation. For several years I used a 500GB Time Machine as a wi-fi broadcaster, a back up, and also as external storage for iTunes - I 'partitioned' it to allow for it's use as an external drive.
Fast forward, and I've replaced the Time Machine with a new 3 TB Time Machine, as well as purchased a separate external drive (3 TB Western Digital) to store my iTunes files (so I no longer need to partition). The new Time Machine is my wi-fu hub.
The problem: I need to retrieve the 300 gb of audio files that are on my old partitioned Time Machine, and move them to my new WD external drive. I've already set up the new Time Machine as my wi-fi broadcaster, and de-activated the old Time Machine.
(I had tried to move the files previous to setting up the new Time Machine, but I realized after de-activating it that I wasn't as thorough as I thought, so I need to go back and move them again.)
I've tried to re-connect to the old Time Machine using an ethernet cable, but when I do, it recognizes it as my wi-fi hub, and it screws up my network - it suddenly allows me access to the old Time Machine, but blocks access to the new WD external drive.
So in a nutshell - I need to be able to connect the old Time Machine to my laptop (a Macbook running OS X 10.7.5) and have my new network see it as just an external drive - so I can then move the 300 GB of audio files directly on to my new WD external drive.
Any thoughts on how I can do this?

Why not connect both drives to the computer, turn off the wi-fi, and then copy the files over. Or you can use Disk Utility/Restore to move the files. See the note - it will erase the WD drive.
You can then set things back to the way you want them. You should have more than one back up as hard drives do fail. In this case, you could use a clone and keep it on the WD drive.
