Time Stamps in Producer/Consumer Setup

I am trying to acquire signal from a Gas Analyzer, Flow Meter, and 3 RTDs.  My hardware is a NI 9215 and NI 9217.  I need to write the data to a file with a time stamp at which the sample was read.  The program is written in a producer/consumer setup in which the data is being acquired in the prodcuer loop and sent to the consumer loop to be written.  I can get the samples written to the file okay. However, I have not figured out how to put the time stamp in the data file correctly. I thought the time stamp was created with the corressponding measurement at the Data Acquisition VI. However, whenever I open the data file, there are only 0s in the time column.  So, I've tried to use Format/Date String to add the time stamp. I can get it to work if I place it in the consumer loop. However, the time stamp is not accurate.  It puts the same time stamp up to six digits of precision for two consecutive samples. I've tried to figure out how to add it to the producer  loop, but I don't know how to add it and the measurements to the queue at the same time. Please tell me the best way to acquire signals with the exact time stamp and write them to a file using a producer/consumer design.
 Example:
Date             Time               RTD1     RTD2      RTD3     CO2      Flow
5/26/07      5:20:01.25       57         56         56.5      100       0.5
5/26/07      5:20:01.30       57         56         56.5      100       0.5
5/26/07      5:20:01.35       57         56         56.5      100       0.5

Okay, I've put it in a For Loop and it will connect now. However, whenever it runs the time stamp increments for a couple seconds and then it just repeats. How do I correct this?

  • Producer/consumer architecture over network variables with Real-Time target.

    Hi all,
I am maintaining a producer/consumer data acquisition program to be deployed on a real-time target. The main code is deployed to and run on the real-time target during experiments, but was having trouble because the program was originally designed to write all experimental data to disk on the real time during acquisition, which puts the whole experiment at the mercy of the hard drive. I am now trying to rework the code so that the host takes care of logging, so that my time-critical loops don't have to wait.
I am currently using LabVIEW 8.5
    I have two questions:
First, how can I programmatically call the data-logging subvi on the host so that it runs in parallel with the main vi which runs the experiment and collects data on the real-time? I have attached the test code that I have been working with to figure this out, but it does not run the logging vi continuously in the background. I am aware that there is better functionality for this in newer versions of LabVIEW, but I would prefer not to upgrade unless there is no other option. I would like to be able to run my data-generating vi and have it start the data logging remotely.
Second, is there a way in the host VI to read values off the network variable using an event structure rather than polling it for updates?
Any help would be sincerely appreciated!

  • Stopping producer consumer loop at the same time

In my application I am using producer consumer architecture. In the producer loop, I am acquiring data, processing and outputting the result (feedback control system). Also in the same producer loop I am inputting all the data to a queue and then in the consumer loop I am writing data to a file. I have a stop control on the front panel and error from the queue and  error from the data acquisition all wired to OR gate to stop the while loop. ( I attached the picture of the code). Whenever I press stop form the front panel program wont completely stop. I think it is because consumer loop still running. Is there way to stop  the both loops at the same time. I tried creating local variable but it slows the program. Front panel stop control mechanical action is set to switch when released.

In the consumer loop you should check the error after the Read Queue function.

  • How to setup Time stamp for CO-PA.

    Hello Friends,
I have created CO-PA datasource in KEB0. Defaultly, the delta method has been selected as
'Generic delta'. But, I need time stamp for delta process.
Where can I setup time stamp for CO-PA data source?
    Thanks
    Sumanth

    Hi,
You need not maintain the timestamp for COPA separately.
A generic data source for which delta based on the timestamp is automatically created.
By default the delta for CO-PA is based on timestamp and you need not do it manually.
Once you do an init for this and see an entry in RSA7 for the COPA data source then you check the option delta status in front of the data source...just click on it and it will tell you upon which field the delta for data source is based...you will find that for CO-PA its by default always timestamp.
    Thanks

  • Why does Time Stamp Control not produce a Absolute Time output?

I have used the the Time Stamp Control for manual input of measurement information. However, this control produce a time stamp in relative time which is unwanted. I thought that Time Stamps always are in Absolute Time. Is this not true? The control is very handy for time and date inputs. Is there a way of changing the output to relative time?

I will try to be more specific:
There is a Time Stamp Control available in the controls palette for use on the front panel. This can be used to set a variable called Time Stamp with values of time and date. It has a time and date browser which is very convenient to use and I like to use it. The time format I prefer in this case is Absolute Time which is time-zone-independent and it is the number of seconds elapsed since 12:00 a. m., Friday 1, 1904, Universal time according to LabVIEW help. However, the output from the Time Stamp Control is in Relative Time which I think is the Absolute Time compensated with Dayligth Saving Time and the local Time zone setting in your system.
Time Stamps are always in Absolute Time I think but not in this case.
My problem may be solved with a VI similar to "Format Date/Time String Function" but with a time stamp input and output, since this VI converts from Absolute time to Relative time. Even better is of course having a Time Stamp Control where you can select between absolute and relative time.

  • State machine VS producer consumer architecture - Time Analysis

After learning various methods to program efficiently and learn how to use SM and Producer consumer. I built a program to control stepper motor in both these techniques.
Here is the RESULT. As we can see a simple state machine without any complicated producer consumer technique performs faster than the second one.
I am not sure which is still the best based on performance and optimization. Please advise which one should I keep and why.

  • Time stamps not linear

    Hi,
I have a DAQ USB-6251 driven by labview.
The time stamps on the text file have backward and forward jumps in them.  See attached for picture.
They increase linearly for about 12000 samples, then jump backwards
about a 3 sec, linearly increase for about 1000, then jump forward
about 6 seconds.  This cycle then repeats ie increasing nice and
linearly for about 12000 samples, jumping back etc.
I suspect there is a buffer somewhere which fills up and then acts strangly when trying to reset.
    Any explanations?  Any solutions?
Here's some further info about my setup:
    Producer loop:
I generate a continuous analog output signal which I feed back into one of analog input pins which I also continuously acquire.
The generation and acquisition both have sample rates of 4096
samples/sec and 1024 samples are set to acquire/generate per loop.
    The recorded input is enqueued.
    Consumer loop:
Dequeues data and write to text file.

    Ben,
Maybe this is a good chance for me to learn (be convinced of) something then.  I'd try this out for myself on hw, but I've got tests running now.
Let's suppose I have both an AI and an AO task, both set up to start off the same sample clock.  However, the AO outputs on the leading edge of a clock while the AI samples on the trailing edge of the clock.  Let's further stipulate that the clock is generated by an on-board counter at 5 kHz with 90% duty cycle.  So the AO update occurs 180 microseconds before the AI.  How do waveforms handle this offset in t0?  Will t0 simply be set to 0 because of the use of an "external" sampling clock?  Or will the two t0 values be equal and non-zero?  Or will they be sometimes equal and sometimes different, depending on the "phase" of the system clock -- either the 1 msec one or the 16 msec one used for system timestamps?
Now, concerning triggering:  Does t0 represent the time of the trigger?  Or of the first sample / output *after* the trigger?  Or is it the time you call DAQmx Start prior to receiving a trigger signal?
Other concern: even when not *strictly* necessary, I try to make a habit of making code that runs pretty efficiently, unless that puts an undue burden on development / maintenance effort.  My experience with processing large arrays vs. processing clusters containing large arrays has suggested that pure arrays are typically significantly more efficient to manage.  (I'm sure it depends on sizes and kinds of processing too.)  Aren't waveforms essentially cluster-like?
Well, enough of the blah, blah, blah.  I really *am* interested.  I know many of the analysis functions prefer (if not require) waveform inputs rather than raw arrays these days, so there are some clear code simplicity advantages to waveforms IF I can be convinced that I'm fully informed of the downsides and gotchas.  (Another example of worry: when integrating a waveform, how does the floating point roundoff accumulate from the 'dt' value?  Will results late in a long array contain more cumulative roundoff error?)

  • Producer consumer timing

    Back again
Thought I was getting somewhere now I am at another brick wall.
    Bit of background:
I have a producer consumer set up. In the producer loop there are 2 DAQmx read VI's reading from a Pressure task and a Temperature task. These are multiple channels, 1 sample, outputtng a 1D wave form. This loop is set to run every 20ms. The two tasks were created using DAQmx Create Channel VI's and DAQmx Start Task VI's. The producer loop feeds a display on the front panel with the sensor values and this hopefully is refreshed at the 50Hz I have asked for. Secondly the loop bundles up the waveforms and puts them in a queue where they are picked up for logging by the consumer loop. In the consumer loop I have a wait 1000ms timer and a Write to Measurment File Express VI to do the logging. This is supposed to log at 1 per second.
The queue is set to enqueue at opposite end, and the max queue length is set to 1. I.E. I only want to log the value at that specific second, but I want to show the data on the front panel at 50 times a second.
    Now heres my problems:
    1) I replaced the DAQmx Create channel's with a MAX project task wired into my DAQmx Start Task VI. As expected the thing picks up and displays the sensor values as it did before. However there is now a problem logging. Before when I had the DAQmx Create Channel, the logging recorded my values correctly at 1 second intervals. The time stamp in the X column went up by 1 second for each set of results. But now, with the MAX project task (needed because of custom scales and differing min/max values for different sensors), The logging still seems to happen at 1 per second, but the time stamp intervals are the same as the sampling rate set in the task!!! (ie at 50Hz the time stamp goes up 20ms for each result even though the results are being recorded at 1 per second)
    2) The timing just seems out of whack.
I keep getting errors that the requested data no longer exists, that it was there but then was over written. Increasing the buffer size or sampling rate is supposed to remedy this... but what sampling rate? the rate set in the task? or the loop iteration speed? I dont understand.
Secondly, despite telling my consumer loop to wait one second between picking up stuff out of the queue to log, it seems to be going round nearly the same pace as the producer loop. To top this off the producer isnt going round at the speed I asked it too either! I put indicators on the loop counters to see this. they are going round at maybe 2Hz.
    I have included my VI's
What am I doing wrong, its really bugging the crap out of me!

The reason you would use get time and date in seconds to to ensure that you log every second. If you use the 1 second wait then you do not take into account the exicution time of your loop. If you add more to the loop in the future than you will see that you do not log every second as you thought. If you loop took 500ms to exicute and you have the 1000ms wait then the actual excution time for recoding to file is 1.5 seconds not 1000ms as you desired. The way I did it will always give you one second unless you exicution time for your loop exceeds one second.''
I did make one change to the vi. I shoulod have put the write in the true false case so that the write only happens when the 1 second has expired.

  • Write signal with time stamp

    hii...
I've a student project to read and write data from a continous signal with labVIEW.. I'm going to read the system for 24/7, The reading program already finished.
The problem is in the writing procces.. I have no idea how to write data to file with low level vi.. I'm new in LabVIEW and I already try some modification to my program but it still don't work as i want.
I want the writing procces only occur when i press the button and it only run for a few second with constant time stamp.. It just to check if there are any data missing or not.. The system are a fast (It's what make problem bigger).
I'm getting crazy at all.. If some one could help me i will be very grateful... I'm using LabVIEW 8.5 and PCI 6259...

    Hi Dani,
    here's the two-loop version...
When you use the local you wouldn't need the queue at all... But using locals may lead to race conditions (not in your simple vi, but general) - locals don't provide "atomic" data access.
In Labview the wire is equivalent to variables in text programming languages!
The vi uses the producer-consumer-scheme (Erzeuger-Verbraucher-Struktur ?): one loop is producing values, the other is consuming them. It's a common scheme in LV programming, you will find examples and a lot of threads here in the forum.

  • Timed Loop in Producer/Consumer Loop

    Hello!
I have a producer/consumer loop LabVIEW program setup to allow me to properly capture images that are quite large (8MP) at approximately 14 frames per second (FPS). The program works great when the consumer loop is a 'while loop' (records at 14fps no problem), but I wanted to make it into a timed loop, so that I may vary the FPS as required. An oddity arises when I do this. Anywhere below 12fps, the loop works fine and the data is recorded properly. However, when I bump it up to 13fps, the consumer calculated FPS goes haywire and starts jumping between ~9 and ~13fps (data processing gets bogged?). When I set the required FPS to 14, the loop executes at a steady 7FPS maximum. Is there something I can do to rectify this situation?
    I have attached my .VI
    Thanks in advance!

    Palanski,
Are you using LabVIEW Real-Time? Timed loops in a windows OS don't really increase determinism more than a while loop with a wait until next multiple timer. Before you changed the producer consumer loop to include a while loop was the programming running correctly? You may also want to vuse the VI analyizer to see how long things are taking to run. I would leave the producer consumer loop in the traditional set up and change the FPS by controlling the wait timer, after benchmarking your code this should be done the same way as you have it for the timed loop

  • What is the Fastest producer consumer method. Queue, RT-FIFO, Event

    Hi all,
Another curly question for the pro's:
I have recently inherited some labview code that uses RT-FIFO for the transfer mechanism in the producer consumer architecture.
The code was first written 3-4 years ago and is presently in LV8.6. It is possible that the reasons for the architectural decision no longer exists.
I am skilled using a queued producer consumer architecure,
    I understand the RT-FIFO Architecture.
I have begun using a user Event Based architecture.
(I have attached samples of each)
I also see the existance of a priority Queue
Each method has it's own capabilities and deficiencies, That aside, does anyone know the relative performance of each method.
    (Assuming single process)
I would expect RT-FIFO to be fastest, it appears to be a low feature version of a standard queue.
What is the perfornace hit for using a more coding freindly Queue
The RT-FIFO description speaks of commications between time critical and lower priority threads.
Until today, I believed that Queues had the same capability.
I have included an event method I commonly use for peer review and to help to fellow users..
    It allows:
    1. Multiple producers with different data types
    2. Processes repecting order of production.
    3. Allows for asynchronus checking of functional notifiers such as stop, start and abort.
    4. In a non real time system it can include front panel interactions.
What I don't understand about it is what overheads, or thread priority changes that may be experienced by using this architecture (it solves a lot of problems for me).

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Are you running into a situation where the difference in time between producing an event, and consuming it, is actually causing your problems?  If not, this is not a question worth worrying about.  Use whatever is most appropriate for your application.
There's no need to make wild guesses - build a VI, benchmark and test!  The attached is a reasonable starting point, although I think the event structure may be slow due to setup time but may respond quickly once running.  If you experiment with this, you'll probably find that there's no definite answer to which is fastest.  Changing the size of the RT-FIFO, or of the queue, makes a big difference in speed.  At least in my testing, a single-element RT-FIFO is fastest, but an infinitely large queue is faster than a small queue, and a longer RT-FIFO is much slower than the single-element version.
It's important to realize that RT is not another word for Fast or Efficient, it's another word for Consistent.  For the purposes of real-time (deterministic) execution, it doesn't matter how fast the RT-FIFO functions are so long as they execute in exactly the same amount of time, every time (with the exception of a "forever" timeout value, of course).  You can use either a standard queue or an RT-FIFO to communicate between loops.  One use for an RT-FIFO is when a time-critical loop is enqueuing the data.  It guarantees that the amount of time needed to put data into the FIFO will not vary.  Enqueueing data in a standard queue will sometimes be faster than other times, depending on whether there is already space available in the queue or space needs to be allocated for the new element.  If this variation is unacceptable, then use an RT-FIFO; otherwise, the standard queue works just as well.
If the architecture shown in your image is working for you, I don't see any reason to change it.
EDIT: oops, almost forgot to attach the code I used for testing!

  • VOICE MEMOS and Wrong Time Stamps in Itunes

I've noticed that my voice memos in the new iTunes 11.1.3 (8) have incorrect time stamps all over them now. This is a real problem for me, since I need the dates that the messages were recorded. I just tested this out by recording a new one today (2/11/14) on my new Iphone 5s. It showed up dated 8/13/12 2:13pm. My phone has the correct date on it, so what gives?
    Any solutions out there?
Not to mention the fact that there are NUMEROUS DUPLICATES of previous memos that have become weird artifacts in my iTunes library each time I've backed up my materials. AND the new iTunes setup makes it incredibly hard to *actually remove data* from my system. I am concerned my private material is no longer private, but being archived elsewhere for meta-data purposes.
    C'mon, Apple. You're really slipping.

  • How to change the transmission rate of data flow in producer/ consumer pattern

    Hi All
I am new to labview and trying to design a application to transfer image data in different rates, that means I can change the transfer rate in the transmission process. In fact,I refer to the the Queue Basic.vi to achieve this function by Changing the delay value of dequeue and enqueue. The program is divided into three parts:
    The first part is the sender in vc used to split and send image data.Data size is 226kb and each time we send a 1kb packet;
    The second is labview rate-change part,use producer/ consumer pattern and queue to transfer data;
The third one is the receiver in vc,receive data in sequence and synthetic images.
The entire transfer process is: image data was sent from the sender to producer loop through DLL, then enqueue--dequeue in consumer loop--DLL--receiver.The sleep time in vc sender is equal to the delay value in producer loop and this makes it look like the data generated as in the loop.
Now this is where my dilemma is:
When transferring data, if the producer loop and consumer loop delay value are equal(both 20ms), I can see image synthesis at a constant speed and no data lose; if I change the consumer loop delay value and make it greater than the producer delay(one is still 20ms and another is 50ms),that means receive in a lower rate and store data in queue. I can see Elements in Queue
increase but the image data randomly lost, and the image synthesis speed is not reduced.
My question is why image data loss and I can't see the image synthesis speed reduced when change the delay value in consumer loop?
Do anyone know how to solve the problem? Are there any examples I can refer to? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

    thisoldman,
I don't have '/usr/lib/modules/3.17.3-1-ARCH/build/Documentation/VGA-softcursor.txt' on my file system. Does it contain the info about changing the blinking speed?
P.S. The other two links I found yet before starting this thread. I only found in them the recommendations about changing "the color and shape of the cursor and turning blinking on/off" (as I mentioned in the original question). Did I miss the info about the blinking speed?
    PPS: I found the vga-softcursor.txt here: https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentatio … cursor.txt
But that file doesn't tell about changing the blink rate either.

  • First attempt at Producer Consumer Architecture: continuous read and dynamically update parameters.

    Hello,
I am currently working with two instruments; an Agilent E3646A and an NI 6212 BNC. My objective is to have the 6212 to be continuously taking measurements according to predefined parameters while the E3646A's parameters can be continuously updated. This simple instrument combination is intended to help me learn the necessarry achitecture; continuous measurement, dynamic output control, and more instruments will be added in the future.
I've previously posted on a similar, but more complicated, setup (http://forums.ni.com/t5/Instrument-Control-GPIB-Serial/Split-second-lag-when-controlling-two-instrum... and was advised to try the Producer Consumer Architecture. I've found relevant literature on the site (http://www.ni.com/white-paper/3023/en/, https://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-2431), searched the forums and constructed my own VI. While my first attempt at a Producer Consumer Architecture has resolved some of the issues I was having when I first posted on the subject, however, new issues have arisen with regard to reading and stopping the VI.
I am currently able to run the VI and update the device parameters. Previously, I would get a freeze while the instrument was being updated and could not toggle parameters until it was done. This has been resolved although the read only updates when a parameter has been updated although it is outside of the event structure. Furthermore the Stop button does not work in any context. I've also gotten occasional errors regarding the Deqeue Element but the bulk of the trouble is Error -200279 "Attempted to read samples that are no longer available" at DAQmx Read. I realize that there is a problem in my Producer Loop but haven't been able to figure out how to resolve it.
This is my first attempt at a Producer Consumer Architecture and already I can see that it is a powerful tool. I read as much as I could and looked at the relevant examples but expected to have some issues in the beginning. Would really appreciate any advice so I can take full advantage of the architecture.
    Hope to hear from you,

    Jon,
Thank you for the response and the suggestions.
I created the Local Variable for the Stop Button and moved the original into its own Event Case. It is now able to stop VI execution although I get Warning -1073676294 which I understand to be the buffer issue. The warning says that this was incurred on VISA Open for the E3646A's Initialize VI which is outside both loops, however, which I don't understand.
I tried increasing buffer size by decreasing the Number of Samples as per suggestions I found on NI forum threads. I've brought it down as low as 1 but the graph still only updates when an Event occurs and I keep getting the same buffer error. You suggested that the problem could be that they are in the same loop; does this mean that the DAQmx read should be outside both Producer and Consumer Loops or moved into the Consumer Loop? I found a couple of links ( http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/Producer-Consumer-Design-Pattern-DAQmx-Event-Structure/td-p/2744450 ,  http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/Producer-Consumer-Architecture/td-p/494883 -first response) on dealing with an Event Structure that my own VI is based. Alternatively, I found another link ( http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/Producer-Consumer-Design-Pattern-DAQmx-Event-Structure/td-p/2744450 - first response) on a DAQmx Read with an Event Structure that places the graph in the Consumer Loop.
The core of my purpose in setting up this Producer Consumer Architecture is so that I could read continuously while the instrument parameters are updated dynamically so it's very important that I understand how this works. I am particularly struggling with how the Event Structure is controlling the While Loop's Execution.
    Hope to hear form you,

  • Add time stamp in Final Cut?

In Final Cut is there any way to add a time stamp, like what you get on a consumer camcorder? The customer wants the date and time to show on the final video. The time and date was not recorded when I recorded the event.

In the mean time, to get this project done, it looks like I'm editing 60 tiny titles for my one hour video.
I'm not expert in Motion, but if you already have it, give yourself 5-10 minutes to try and publish the Time Date generator. The basic steps are (I'm doing this from memory so the names of things might be wrong):
    1. Sart up Motion and choose a new FCPX Generator template project. Set the project settings that match your own project settings in FCPX.
    2. Drag the Time Date Generator into the project.
    3. Publish all the parameters you might want to change in FCPXby right clicking on them and selecting publish parameter.
    4. Save the project. this will ask you for a name and category, which once saved, automatically appear in FCPX.
    5. Drag that one new generator to your project, change the duration to fill your whole timeline, and set the parameters to your starting date/time.
