Time to upgrade my beloved TiBook..

Well I never thought I would see the day, but it now looks like I'm heading to upgrade
my TiBook 550 after 6yrs.of being a devoted workhorse in my personal & business endevours.
A few weeks ago it took a spill from my hands onto a carpeted floor.
It booted up fine and then noticed one thing wrong.. the LCD display when moved back/forward
would intermittently freeze (harddrive non effected) and start dissolving!! until I moved the screen
again then it would be ok. External monitor showed that something wasn't right with PB LCD.
The Tibook just got back from having a diagnostic report and it shows that I need a new LCD screen,
which we know Apple no longer makes "new LCD screens" for TiBooks.
Limited options as it looks like I can only get a "used LCD" screen for about $300-$400
And the value on the TiBooks are less than that I'm told!?
So with the other possible option of upgrading to a new Apple computer, I'd like to get some feedback
on TiBook user's who have gotten a new MacBook(pro), Imac (20"/24") or even a G5 PowerMac.
MacBook Air wouldn't work for my needs as a photographer..maybe in the next generation of Macbooks.
In general..looking for fast processing, portability, hardware upgrades, and screen real estate (Imac 24" is a
high appeal)
Would appreciate some thoughts and guidence in helping me choose.
I don't know what I'll do with the TiBook (keep it or sale it).. for now the screen is behaving fine.
thanks in advance for your comments. ~A~

Eww..
Well .. it looks like the LCD screen can't be replaced on my TiBook w/o taking apart the bezel
which Apple no longer makes. I went through an authorized Apple service shop, and as
replacement parts are no longer being made my beloved TiBook is worth less than a few $100's
and considered a complete loss by my insurance.
So my replacement cost is valued to that of the MacBook (no Pro model) and I lose out on a 15"
screen which I at least need for my photography work (pride has me settling for nothing less!).
So I'm hoping to come across one of the last 15" Aluminum PB models so I can continue to use
my software, or a "refurbished" 15 Intel MacBook Pro that has me paying less than a few $100's
difference.
The 24" Imac STILL tempts with it's massive screen, but I lose portability and upgrade features.
Processing speed is a plus, but hey I've been running @ 550MHz on my TiBook anything twice
the speed would probably blow my mind already. I've seen the Intel systems..VERY fast!!
I'm torn and could use more feedback from other Apple users who have various experience with
the newer laptops..
appreciate the thoughts... ~A~

  • Time to upgrade, but concerned...

Hi...I currently have an iBook G4, and while I love this little white book, it is deffently time to upgrade. I have droped this puppy more then once and now it is a permenent desktop due to hinge damage.
Anyways, im thinking of buying a new macbook, but a couple things concern me.
    1. Ive heard the new macbooks overheat like a vintage PSX during ff7. haha.....you know what i mean...(if you don't, look up some PSX game system history...lol). Anyways, my ibooks fan never turns on. during the 2+ years that ive owned it, its maybe turned on 5 times, and that was usually during WOW. It also scared the crap outta me, because it would just turn on and id hear this wizzing noise.
    2. Sence apple is still somewhat experimenting with the intell chips, im still concerned on how they are working out. Any personal thoughts, experiances...ect.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.
    Thanks. Derek =]

    1. Ive heard the new macbooks overheat like a
    vintage PSX during ff7.
I got mine 5 months ago and when I first got it, it did run hot. But after the firmware update, it's been beautiful. I mean it never seems to get hot. Not even toasty-warm.
And I rarely noticed the fans running, though, of course, sometimes they do.
    2. Sence apple is still somewhat experimenting with the intell chips, im
still concerned on how they are working out.
Again, there were some hiccups at the very beginning, but at this point the experimentation is waaay over. Every new Mac is using them and they're working out brilliantly. Lightening speed and great performance.
Upgrade, guy. You will be amazed not just by the speed and performance of this machine, but by its stunningly beautiful screen, the incredibly responsive keyboard and being able to use the built-in camera. It's really a fantastic machine.

  • Time to upgrade my 1st Generation Airport Extreme?

As the title says, thinking it's time to upgrade my 1st Generation Airport Extreme (Draft 'n') to the latest 5th generation model, just to be clear my existing Extreme is the current form factor white square design and not the very earlier dome version (although I did have one of those too once upon a time).
Here's my thinking/question, current Extreme has been a great trusty workhorse since new, reliable and generally rock solid performance, however a recent upgrade to a super fast 'Fibre To The Home' internet connection is making me think it's time for an upgrade to solve low speed/throughput issues with the current Extreme setup.
With my current iMac networked to the wall mounted Fibre (1000 Mbps ethernet) router via Cat 5e I'm getting amazing speeds on speedtest.net (i.e 760 Mbps down and 228 Mbps up), however when wirelessly connected to the Extreme with my iPhone 4S and MacBook (Black) I get the following speedtest.net results:
iPhone 4S: 17 Mbps down and 34 Mbps up
Macbook: 24 Mbps down and 63 Mbps up
(Interesting that the uploads seem to have better connection/throughput than the downloads, normally the opposite applies?)
I understand that the current Extreme is somewhat crippled as it features 100 Mbps Ethernet ports (latest models have 1000 Mbps), however the wireless speeds still seem way below what I would expect (i.e. nearer 100 Mbps), both the 4S and Macbook are within feet of the Extreme.
The Extreme is set to 'n' only 2.4 Ghz, bridge mode (letting the wall mounted Fibre router do all the routing/DHCP work) via Ethernet Cat5 from one of the 4 Ethernet ports on the wall mounted Fibre router to the Extreme WAN port, tried various channels, 1, 6 and 11. Current Firmware 7.6.1 on the extreme. I have also disabled the wireless connection/network on the Fibre router to avoid any possible interference with the Airport network.
So my main question is, should I look to upgrade to the latest Extreme model, will this improve the wireless speeds, based on my setup what wireless speeds could/should I expect with a new Extreme, or am I missing/overlooking something within the current setup?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks John, this certainly helped.
    Speedtest.net results:
2.5 Ghz n: 19 Mbps down and 53 Mbps up
5.0 Ghz n: 28 Mbps down and 58 Mbps up
It also came to light that I wasn't using the best of the speedtest.net servers to do my testing, by accident I selected a different one (Newbury UK - Vodafone) to the one I had been using (Milton Keynes UK) and the Newbury server indicated download speeds of around 50 Mbps, which I feel much happier with.
Seriously considering a new Extreme for the simultaneous 'n' networks, 1000 Mbps ports and no doubt improved components, antenna etc.
Will report back if/when set up.
    Thanks again.

  • Time to upgrade:  Long time Apple user, get the Iphone 4 or Droid 3???

    Hello,
It's time to upgrade to a new phone for both me and the wife, she needs a new phone now as her LG env3 is acting up.  I'm a looong time Apple user, and of course the Apple iphone is a natural to pick, however It'll cost $350 for 2 when we use the last $50 credit for new/every 2.  The new Droid 3 looks very interesting and we can get 2 for $149 for both with the credit and the BOGO sale going on.
So which should we get, mainly use the phone for talk, texting and will of course check emails, etc once we get a smart phone.  The Env3's we have now are good at texting with the keyboard and of course good for talking.
If we go for the Apple, I could get her the iphone 4 for her and I can wait for the iphone 5 if it's actually coming out this year.
    Tony

I currently have a Droid Global 2 and while I enjoy the expanded features of a smartphone, I miss my Env2 terribly for one main reason :  The keyboard was the best!.   The Droid Global 2's slide-out keyboard lacks dedicated number keys and is a bit cramped compared to the Env, but much faster/accurate than an iPhone.
I will be upgrading to the DROID 3 as it now has dedicated number keys and a larger screen.
While I really wanted an iPhone, the lack of a physical keyboard was the dealbreaker.  I test drove a friends phone and made so many errors in email, texting, dialing #s that I knew it wasn't going to be acceptable for me.  It took forever to do basic texting...and I have very small hands/fingers!   Can't imagine how big 'man hands' would handle the iPhone.
If keyboard accuracy/'speed is not a big deal the and iPhone will work for you.  The iPhone is much lighter as it doesn't have a physical keyboard....some people just have to have Apple regardless.
    Good luck on the Apple

  • Is it time to upgrade my Macbook's RAM?

    I have a Macbook 2nd generation (2 GHz, 1 GB memory).
When I open Photoshop CS2 or Illustrator CS2, it tells me that my memory is running low.
Also when I have several programs open, such as iTunes, Safari, and iChat, they seem to run slower.
ALSO I've discovered the Activity Monitor and been watching it...when I have Illustrator and a few other programs open, it says I only have 17.31 MB of free memory left. Also it may state 66063/4749 (for example) for Pages ins/outs.
In conclusion, does this mean it's time to upgrade my Macbook's memory? I've had this laptop for almost 3 years now and it's definitely held up way better than my previous HP laptop.
If I need to upgrade the RAM, how much does Apple charge for installing it themselves? I don't think I'm confident enough to install it myself.
Any thoughts would be very appreciated. Thanks!

You can install the memory yourself, you just need a size 0 philips screwdriver (avail in any hardware store or radio shack). Memory is cheap, I would go to 3 or 4g (I think your model can only address 3g). • Time to upgrade hsdpa to 21mbps on high ends

htc and samsung now produces high end phones with 21mbps hsdpa capability so i think nokia should upgrade next symbian^3 phone with hsdpa 21mbps downlink and 5mbps hsupa uplink capability rather than usual 10mbps hsdpa and 2mbps hsupa

  • I bought my mac with iMovie in it when it comes time to upgrade it, it doesn't let me upgrade and says to sign into the account I bought it with, but it already came included when I bought it from the apple store. How can I upgrade it?

Like I said when I bought my mac in the apples store, iMovie was already included. When it comes time to upgrade it, it won't let me and it says to sign into the account I used to purchase it. But I didn't purchase it, it came along with the computer. How do I get it to upgrade?

Try opening the Mac App Store and go to the Purchases tab. See if you see the preinstalled iMovie App there. You may have to accept it into your Apple ID if you have not done so already. Then it should upgrade.

  • Why is so hard to get a good deal when it's time to upgrade!

I dont understand this at all, All I Want is to get the same service plans as my neighbors and family. I have been a Verizon Fios customer since the service was introduced years ago. And, I was never happier, until it came time to upgrade.  And it happens every time.
Tonight for instace I again tried to get a better deal.  So I checked what was being offered to me on the website. For basically the same service, It's more expensive!  So I found a great deal online, I called in this time. Apparently the deal is only available to NEW customers. So I attempt to explain what I use, Limited cable, the normal main channels. I mainly use my Apple TV and stream.  So I was offered a cheaper plan, with adeal for HBO. (Sweet)
An hour later - the wife screaming she is missing a few " Normal " Channels - MTV, Animal Planet, Cooking... Basically ALL the channels worth watching to her. So, I called back and canceled the order. This sucks!
As it turns out, it's cheaper for me to keep my existing service. The only offer you gave me was for faster internet, and it cost more! It is completely disheartening to know that I recommended your services to friends and clients.
Why is it so hard to sign on to a better deal when it's time to re-commit to your service. You make such good offers, but they are only available to new customers. Loyalty really does mean nothing today. Not just because I pay my bill, but because I believed in it enough to tell others about this service and how happy i WAS on a daily basis.
I hate Comcast with every bone in my body. But if I can't get a deal where I can be happy with not selling my soul, Ill go to them.
Just state what it is - Why are you hiding the fact that Basic Cable  is Basic Cable.  Labeling everything with HD is misleading and almost a direct point to mislead a customer. It's like saying water  is just as good as beer, they start from the same state.
Not everyone is looking at the web page when talking on the phone.
MTV and Animal planet are "Premium Channels"  - What?
I have had the same hardware since I started, Everything I own is wireless so up and download speed are totally dependent on what is connected. But since I use my own hardware my personal network is faster. The up/Down connection won't make a difference. So upping my speed is not a benefit unless you are planning to install fiber for me in my walls, i have the hardware.
Hire someone that knows Mac's - I get tired of answering questions for you all day.

I recently called and was offered an upgrade with fios perferred hd, 75/75 internet, and 2 yrs free for all movie channels for $118 a month. I called to complain that I cant pay my bill online and their first response was to see how they can upgrade my services. Keep calling and hope you get a good rep.

  • I have Win XP on a Dell 9100. I had FF 3.6.10 & tried many times to upgrade to 3.6.11 --- all unsuccessful. The next day, I saw 3.6.12 downloading. I seem to now have 3.6.12 . I don't know about 3.6.11 . How can I check on this?

I have had Mozilla Firefox for years. My computer is a Dell 9100 , and I use Windows XP. I have upgraded to each version of Firefox that was offered to me. Each upgrade was quick and easily done--up to, and including, Firefox 3.6.10 . I tried many times to upgrade to Firefox 3.6.11 , each time with no success. I have something like 21 copies of the downloaded Firefox 3.6.11 package. The next day, I resumed by quest to download & install 3.6.11 and saw, on my monitor, the 3.6.12 version of Firefox downloading. I don't recall how this happened. I know that I was only trying to download and install version 3.6.11 . Now, I seem to have, by looking at "About Mozilla Firefox" under "Help", Firefox 3.6.12 .
Q1. Is there a way I can check to see whether I have a valid download of 3.6.11 and/or 3.6.12 in my Firefox setup?
Q2. How can I know that all is OK, Firefox-wise? The answer to this question probably can help me a lot, in the future.
Q3. Can I delete all, or perhaps all but one, of those 3.6.11 downloads?
Q4. Any idea on why my difficulties occurred?
Q5. How might I avoid these difficulties in the future?
    Thank you for your help.

Firefox 3.6.12 is the current version and it was released only a few days after the release of Firefox 3.6.11 to fix a critical security issue that was discovered. The security fix was prepared and released within 48 hours after discovery.
I do not know what caused your problems in trying to upgrade to Firefox 3.6.11, but the point is moot now. Should you have future problems upgrading, please post back here and someone will assist you.
You can keep one copy of version 3.6.11 if you wish; I usually keep 2 prior versions plus the current version.
You can download the full version(s), not just the small update, from: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/

Just installed a HP Color Laserjet CM2320nf MFP printer, at the same time I upgraded to Lion. It prints fine, but I cannot use the scan functions.  I downloaded the most recent driver! Any help would be appreciated.

HP says that the drivers for your all in one print/scanner are downloadable from apple. For the scanner to use preview. image capture or the scan icon from the print driver queue.  I don't know how old your HP is, but I know that the newer Os from apple don't support a lot of older printers. You might be able find a third party driver that could work.

  • I wish I could remember what exactly happenned the last time I upgraded iphoto years ago, but something

I wish I could remember what exactly happenned the last time I upgraded iPhoto years ago. Did my address book go kaflooey? But whateverit was, it discouraged me from any updating eversince.  Believe it or not, I have been limping along with Iphoto 6.0.6 and basically faring fine, given my needs.  But I would now like to be able to order prints from my photo library -- and you can't do that any longer with 6.  So my question is:  what are the things that
can go wrong with the later systems?  And is there any way around having that happen?

    Make a back up.
    Make a second.
Upgrade. Get on with your life.

Classic to OsX offered some time for upgrading I didn't relize when I went to Lion I was going to have to make the sacrafices that I did. I can't use my old Australian version of Accounting Edge 5 anymore. This has posed a real problem for our small business. It was my fault for not checking befor I jumped but really liked what was on offer. Wasn't really ready to upgrade. Looks like i'm about 3,000,000 posts too late now I've done some reading i'm informed to what I could have done and should have done and should not have done. I am impressed withe Lion, not being informed was a crime on my part, having said that I didn't need warning labels on the last few upgrades over the last few years so thought it might just be another walk in the park. Having a shop running on Mac and never needing a Techy over the last 12 years has been great. It takes a little digging to solve the puzzles we come accross but I have alway's enjoyed a good puzzle. It's the dawning of a new era, bring it on with Lion I'm sure we'll grow to love you too.

  • Why do documents have to be saved-as, each time we upgrade indesign

Each time we upgrade Indesign, every document that gets opened, has to be saved-as. But the save as dialog box never shows the folder where the document is stored. Is there a way to configure Indesign to save back to where it came from, without us having to navigate back to that folder in the save as dialog box.

Thank you Bob. Guess I was hoping for a settings or preference option to "allow overwriting saves" or at least a Save as dialog box that would open to the folder that contains the document. We use a lot of different Indesign documents and forms. Each time we upgrade, the first time we open any document, we need to do the 5-8 clicks to navigate to the document folder in the save as dialog box. Oh well. I'll quit complaining and get back to work.
