TimesTen and 4TB database

Hi,
I am investigating this product for use with a 4TB client/server OLTP oracle database. We plan to migrate to an n-tier architecture (Oracle iAS in the middle) and plan on keeping the oracle database. How will TimesTen help in this scenario? Will I have to store the entire 4TB in TT on the middle tier? How will updates on the backend be replicated to TT. In real time? How much memory will I require to store that much data in TT?
For now I am looking for some high-level feedback on how TT actually works in my scenario.
Thank you

In this kind of scenario, typically you will cache just selected tables, or subsets of tables, in TimesTen in order to improve response times for key parts of the application. Before you can decide on how or if TimesTen can help you need to determine which parts of the application you need to speed up and whether the current bottleneck(s) relate to database access and/or the network hops related to database access. Then you should evaluate what data would need to be cached in TimesTen to enable those parts of the application to run against TimesTen rather than Oracle. You also need to evaluate what is involved in moving the application, and its SQL, from Oracle to TimesTen. What API(s)? does the application use to communicate with Oracle? Is any PL/SQL involved? Any esoteric database types? You should also perform some basic validation to confirm that for your data and queries, TimesTen provides a useful speed up over Oracle.

  • Application connection to  TimesTen In-Memory Database

    Hi All,
We're in the planing of creating TimesTen In-Memory Database for our production databases. Now we're in testing phase,we made one TimesTen In-Memory Database for one test database.
Now we don't want to put all database in memory, we've some selected tables for some users,we only want these tables will by in memory, so we create cache group & add theese tables in that.
Now some of my database is in memory & some database is not in memory,so I want to know that how the application users will connect to database ??
Is they connect to TimesTen In-Memory Database or our main database ???
If they connect to TimesTen In-Memory Database how they will access the procedures of functions etc from main database ???
Or If they connect to main database how these TimesTen In-Memory Database tables will access by users ???
Is TimesTen In-Memory Database will help only when we put whole database in memory ???
    Thinks & Regards,
    Atul Mandale.

    Hi Atul,
If you want to cache all your database then just create cache groups to encapsulate all your tables. That is the only way. However, I am far from sure this would be a good idea...
TimesTen is not a transparent, 'just plug it in' performance accelerator (such a thing does not exist and probably never will). It is intended to solve specific problems i.e. when some or all parts of an application need 'real time' access to some database data and the performance requirements (usually response time but sometimes throughput) are such that they either cannot be met at all, or cannot be met cost effectively, using Oracle DB or RAC alone. If one has that kind of situation then TimesTen may be able to help. It is unlikely to help a general application scenario just by plugging it in. Note that to successfully implement TimesTen it is almost always necessary to make both application and architectural changes. Why is this?
    1. You are moving from a single DB to a multi-DB solution. Each item of data can be mastered (i.e. be updateable) in only one DB - Oracle or TimesTen. All parts of the system must understand this and enforce this or dat inconsistency may result.
    2. All the data held in TimesTen must fit into physical memory. Data storage requirements often increase when moving a table from Oracle to TT. If you have a table that takes up 5 GB in Oracle it may well need 8 GB or more of memory in TimesTen. Unless your Oracle database is quite small you will need a machine with a very large amount of memory to cache the whole DB in TimesTen.
    3. Queries and transactoons cannot span data in TT and Oracle. Any given query or transaction must execute entirely in TimesTen or Oracle.
    4. Depending on which tables are cached and which are not, some application componenst may need to be aware of the location (TT or Oracle) of specific tables/data and go to the right place to get it. The TimesTen PassThrough feature can certainly help a lot with this but it does not necessarily address every possible issue.
    5. Today, TimesTen only supports ODBC and JDBC APIs. If you have an application that uses OCI it must be recoded to use ODBC. The next major release of TimesTen does support OCI.
    6. TimesTen does not support triggers or PL/SQL. The next major release supports PL/SQL and we have our own proprietary event notification API called XLA.
    7. Although the SQL supported by TimesTen is a large subset of Oracle SQL there are still incompatibilities and some datatypes (e.g. CLOBS/BLOBS is on example) that TimesTen does not support.
While it may be possible to cache all your database it may not be a very practical, or beneficial, way to go. Can you share a bit of detal about the problem you are trying to solve with TimesTen so that maybe we can advise you of the best approach?

    Hi Pratheej,
These vulnerabilities were fixed in 11.2.1.6.1 and 7.0.6.2.0. As you are on 11.2.1.8.4 you are okay for 11.2.1 but the 7.0.5.16.0 release does contain the vulnerability. If you are concerned then you should upgrade those to 7.0.6.2.0 or later (check for the latest applicable 7.0 release in My Oracle Support).

  • Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database VS Oracle In-Memory Database Cache

    Hi,
What is difference in Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database VS Oracle In-Memory Database Cache.
For 32 bit on windows OS i am not able to insert data's more than 500k rows with 150 columns (with combinations of CHAR,BINARY_DOUBLE,BINARY_FLOAT, TT_BIGINT,REAL,DECIMAL,NUMERIC etc).
[TimesTen][TimesTen 11.2.2.2.0 ODBC Driver][TimesTen]TT0802: Database permanent space exhausted -- file "blk.c", lineno 3450, procedure "sbBlkAlloc"
I have set Perm size as 700 mb,Temp size as 100mb
What is the max size we can given for PermSize,TempSize,LogBufMB for 32 bit on windows OS.
What is the max size we can given for PermSize,TempSize,LogBufMB for 64 bit on windows OS.
What is the Max configuration of TT for 32 bit what i can set for Perm size Temp size.
    Thanks!

They are the same product but they are licensed differently and the license limits what functionality you can use.
TimesTen In-Memory Database is a product in its own right allows you to use TimesTen as a standalone database and also allows replication.
IMDB Cache is an Oracle DB Enterprise Edition option (i.e. it can only be licensed as an option to an Oracle DB EE license). This includes all the functionality of TImesTen In-Memory Database but adds in cache functionality (cache groups, cache grid etc.).
32-bit O/S are in general a poor platform to try and create an in-memory database of any significant size (32-bit O/S are very limited in memory addressing capability) and 32-bit Windows is the worst example. The hard coded limit for total datastore size on 32-bit O/S is 2 GB but in reality you probably can;'t achieve that. On Windows the largest you can get is 1.1 GB and most often less than that. If you need something more than about 0.5 Gb on Windows then you really need to use 64-bit Windows and 64-bit TimesTen. There are no hard coded upper limit to database size on 64-bit TimesTen; the limit is the amount of free physical memory (not virtual memory) in the machine. I have easily created a 12 GB database on a Win64 machine with 16 GB RAM. On 64-bit Unix machines we have live database of over 1 TB...

  • Exalytics OBIEE, TimesTen and Views

    Hi all,
I'm currently working on a prototype with an Exalytics box. I have several schemas in the TimesTen database with caching groups using 11g in one Exadata as source. On TimesTen there's one extra schema that UNIONs ALL the information from all schemas into several Views. These Views are then used as OBIEE source.
The first problem I ran into is that after adding the Views into OBIEE RPD Physical Layer, I'm not able to right click on the View and go into Physical Diagram, the option is not highlighted. I've imported tables from other schemas in TimesTen and was successfully able to join them in the Physical Diagram, the option is available to click, for Views it isn't, which is strange - You can use Oracle 11g Views as OBIEE source and it works perfectly.
I've also tried to right click the Views in the RPD and View Data in the Physical Layer and OBIEE simply returns me a lot of errors, as can be seen below:
    [NQODBC][SQL_STATE:HY000][nQSError: 10058] A general error as occurred.
[nQSError: 43113] Message returned from OBIS.
[nQSError: 43093] An error occurred while processing the EXECUTE PHYSICAL statement.
[nQSError: 16001] ODBC error state: 3700 code: 7025 message:

[nQSError: 16014] SQL Statement preparation failed.
Using TimesTen trace monitor I was able to see what query originated this error, and it was the following one:
    15:39:50.592 73 SQL      2L   11C   4393P Preparing: select  from DIM_DATE_VW
    15:39:50.592 74 SQL      4L   11C   4393P sbSqlCmdCompile1()(E): cmdType:100, cmdNum:1001123.
    15:39:50.592 75 ERR      4L   11C   4393P TT7025: Illegal use of reserved keyword "FROM", character position:9 -- file "ptSqlY.y", lineno 9243, procedure "reserved_word_or_syntax_error"
Is this some sort of known bug or limitation between OBIEE, TimesTen and Views? Can anyone help?
    I'm running TimesTen 11.2.2.5.0, Oracle 11.2.0.3.0 and OBIEE 11.1.1.7.1.
    Best regards,
    André

Who said you must buy Exalytics in order to use TT with OBIEE? If you already have it, just create an RPD connection pools and off you go. You won't be able to use all the nice bits 'n pieces a full Exalytics sports, but where OBIEE is concerned, it's just a source like any other.

  • TimesTen and Memcached

    Hi,
Memcached (http://www.danga.com/memcached/) is a product being used by highly transactional websites to cache data structures in memory.
I beleive it is similar to what TimesTen does. I was trying to find comparison between TimesTen and Memcached at OTN, but no luck.
Appreciate if someone can provide the comparison for these alongwith pros and cons of both technologies.
    Regards.

memcached is a distributed memory object cache, it is commonly used to cache SQL resultsets, targeted at repetitive queries found in read intensive database web applications. The user application is responsible for managing and populating the cache, memcached does not provide data synchronization with the Oracle database.
For example this is the logic the application developer needs to implement:
    * Wherever you go to do a database query, first check the memcache. If the memcache returns an undefined object, then go to the database, get what you're looking for, and put it in the memcache
    * To ensure the application does not see stale data, the application must update both the memcache and the database at the same time
memcached does not understand SQL. If a memcached node dies, all data are lost and it is up to the application to reload the data from the source.
TimesTen is a memory optimized SQL relational database, that can run standalone or as a cache in front of an Oracle database. Developers use standard JDBC, ODBC or SQL to access TimesTen. TimesTen provides real-time, updatable caching for Oracle database, the data synchronization between Oracle and TimesTen is automatically handled.
The TimesTen database is persistent and supports full ACID transactions with recovery. TimesTen also offers real-time transactional replication between TimesTen databases for high availability and load sharing.

  • Timesten and XLA

I'm investigating TimesTen and am looking to implement trigger like functionality using XLA. The specific trigger-like behavior I'm trying to implement using XLA is to automatically increment table id values using sequences.
After researching XLA, I don't see anything that would allow for "BEFORE INSERT" trigger functionality in order to provide a sequence's nextval as part of the same insert transaction.
Am I looking at this the wrong way? Can I create true trigger-like functionality using XLA?
    Thanks

While XLA provides some 'trigger like' capabilities it has many differences to triggers and not a general purpose replacement for triggers. The most significant differences between triggers and XLA are:
    1. XLA is an API which is called from coe executing outside the database whereas triggers are SQL constructs that reside, and execute, within the database.
    2. Transactional changes only become visible to XLA after a transaction commits and so XLA cannot change the outcome of any transaction directly. Triggers execute within the context of the database transaction and in general are invoked before the transaction commits; they are therefore able to directly influence the outcome of the transaction.
I'm afraid that what you are looking to do is not possible in XLA. The closest that one could come would be to insert a record with a dummy value for the sequence derived field and then commit the insert. Your XLA based code could then detect the insert and, using SQL+ODBC calls on a separate ODBC connection, update the row with the value derived from the sequence. Note that if you are using this field as the primary key the nthis is still not possible since currently TimesTen does not allow primary key values to be updated...

  • TimesTen on the Database Host

I have reviewed the documentation and usually see Oracle 11g TimesTen (IMDB) Cache as part of the "Middle Tier".
Can Oracle 11g TimesTen (IMDB) Cache and the Oracle 11g Database be installed on the same host?
I have extra real memory on the host that runs the Oracle 11g Database and want to take advantage on IMDB Cache.
What is the reasoning behind running IMDB Cache on the "Middle Tier".

It is technically possible to install and run TimesTen on the same host as oracle Db but this is not a recommended configuration because:
    1. Unless the Oracle/TT server has adequate hardware (CPU/Memory/Storage) and has been very carefully setup you are likely to get competition for memory, CPU and disk I/O resources between TimesTen and Oracle DB which will nnegatively impact the performance of both.
    2. TimesTen delivers best performance when it is co-located with the application logic that is accessing it. When the application and TimesTen are on the same machine the appplication can use 'direct connection' mode which eliminates all IPC (even local IPC) from the app <-> TimesTen communication resulting in very efficient and low latncy communication between the app and TimesTen. When TimesTen is on the same server as oracle all interactions with TimesTen still incur a network roundtrip which is very expensive compared to typical SQL execution times in TimesTen.
So yes you can do it but in most cases it is a bad idea and won't deliver anything like the benefits you would getif you put TimesTen in the middle tier.

  • Create Temporary databases and Permanent databases

    Hi,
How to configure or setup Temporary databases and Permanent databases ?
Need separate steps to install or setup Temporary / Permanent databases
Windows 2003 & 32 bit OS and 8 GB RAM
    In web site http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21901_01/doc/timesten.1122/e21633/comp.htm#CHDBEDHC
it is said as it is configured with DSN (Data Source Name)
but to how to setup Temporary databases and Permanent databases
Note:Oracle database has not been installed, only Oracle TimesTen has been installed.
Temporary databases are not stored to disk.
Permanent databases are stored to disk automatically through a procedure called checkpointing.
I need to keep the data in memory and need to pass the data to another server via replication or some other way.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
You dont need to install something. You need to configure your DSN only.
For creating Temporary database you should set up the Temporary DSN parameter (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21901_01/doc/timesten.1122/e21633/using.htm#BCGJAJDI).
If you want using Permanent database just uncheck Temporary DSN parameter.
Temporary databases are not stored to disk. Permanent databases are stored to disk automatically through a procedure called checkpointing. No. TimesTen databases (Permanent and Temporary) store data in memory. It is the main purpose. Permanent db saves a copy of data on disk only for recovery purpose. Temporary db doesnt do it.

  • Running TimesTen and 9i together

The application I'm running has lots of reads from some tables and fewer writes on other tables.
I'm running a C++ code that works with Oracle 9i. I want to use the cache connect option to cache some of my tables but to do all the writing to the database (different tables).
I'm connecting using OTL to the oracle and what I couldn't figure out is if I need to do any code changes. If so, how can I support both the connection to the 9i and the TimesTen and what are the minimum changes that are required.
    Help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,

If my understanding is correct, your requirement is that you want to cache the frequently used Oracle tables which are read only in TimesTen; but you also need to update tables which only exist in the Oracle database.
If so, there are a couple of ways to do this:
    1. Your application can establish and maintain two separate database connections, one (ODBC/JDBC) to TimesTen for accessing the readonly tables and another (SQL*Net) to update the Oracle tables.
    2. Use the Cache Connect PASSTHROUGH feature in TimesTen, which allows you to send SQL requests for non-cached data directly to the backend Oracle database.
Using the 2nd approach means that your application only need to provide connections to TimesTen, and TimesTen will spawn and manage the connection to the Oracle backend database. In terms of performance the 1st approach will always be the best, since the Oracle UPDATE statements do not need to go via TimesTen.

  • HELP! FOR LOOP TO SCROLL THROUGH TABLE AND CREATE DATABASE LINK

    Hi,
Here's the scenario, not much of a PL programmer, just basic SQL so really need some help people!
I have 2 tables. 1 contains list of DB's and the other contains rules to follow.
I need to create a loop that goes through the table containing the DB's and on each row a DB link is created (Only 1 link allowed!)
Once created, the schema currently logged in with also has an account on the linked DB in order to run scripts- The scripts are stored centrally hence the requirement for the link to the target DB.
There are numerous scripts that need to be executed and can all be called from 1 script, once executed the loop exists and the database link needs to be dropped.
Once dropped, the first loop continues, creating a DB link for the next DB listed in the table (and all the scripts are fired again)
This continues against all the DB's listed in the table.

    Hi BlueShadow,
Thanks again for the response, you've hit the nail on the head. SQL scripts on a unix server, a loop goes through a table 1 at a time. Each row gets a link created and then all the scripts stored on the server are executed against the db linked to. So I'm assuming this is a loop within a loop.
1 loop to go through the table to create the link and then another loop within once connected to execute all the scripts against the connected DB. Once the scripts are run, the loop exits and moves onto the next server and so on until all the servers have the scripts are run.
It's PL/SQL scripts we're after and not shell scripts as this would free us from the OS constraints.
We have to drop the links due to security. Any idea on o

  • Remote and local databases

let say that i access a oracle form through the web and that form access data from two distributed databases, then will there be a remote database and local database for the user or all the databases will be remote databases to the user

    In my opinion.
using local databases -- access tables without DB_link
using Remote databases -- access tables through DB_link

  • How can i create a new and tableless database using database configuration

How can i create a new and tableless database using database configuration

How can i create a new and tableless database using database configuration
Just don't install the sample schemas. See the installation guide
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10831/installation.htm
    Using the Database Configuration Assistant
When you install Oracle Database with the Oracle Universal Installer, the sample schemas are installed by default if you select the Basic Installation option. Selecting the sample schemas option installs all five schemas (HR, OE, PM, IX, and SH) in the database. If you choose not to install the sample schemas at that time, you can add them later by following the instructions in section "Manually Installing Sample Schemas".
Choose a custom install and don't install the sample schemas.
All other schems/tables installed are REQUIRED by Oracle
