Titanium G4 Problems

Greetings everyone.
I’m trying this again, as previous suggestions haven’t worked ...
I’ve got a bit of a problem with my Titanium PowerBook, and,
as always, when I can’t seem to fix it myself, I turn to the
great people of the world for assistance.
The machine:
Titanium PB G4, 400MHz, 10 GB HD w/5GB available, 256MB RAM w/VMemory on,
running OS9.1.1
The problem:
When opening some programs, such as PhotoShop or Adaptec Toast
(not at the same time), the application will start to open and then immediately quit.
No error message or other indication of a problem. Occasionally, a program
will open, but immediately upon trying to use it (i.e., opening a photo, creating a
new document, etc.) the program crashes. As this is happening with more than
one of my programs, I feel it is a OS problem and not the specific program.
Examples of memory specifics:
Photoshop-Suggested Size:16384k; Min. Size: 16384k; Pref Size: 23616k.
Toast-Suggested Size: 8000k; Min. Size: 8000k; Pref Size: 10220k.
What I have done to try to solve this problem:
I trashed the preferences for both these apps and the Finder and System
prefs, rebuilt the desktop, and also increased/decreased the memory for
each app. No change.
I ran Disk Doctor and TechTool with no problems found.
I completely deleted all PhotoShop, Toast, or other effected/relevant files
and programs from the computer, and re-installed everything via disk. No change.
I re-built the Desktop and zapped the PRAM. No change.
Note: All other apps seem to work fine and as expected. Just these
few apps are giving me the problems. I feel that it is a computer-wide
problem that is affecting only a few applications, not an application problem.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks!!
Bill

Hi Thunder 1,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like a memory or cache problem. Check in System Profile to see if all your RAM and cache is being recognized.
Also, why not update to at least to 9.2.2? The updates are free on this site (Support:Downloads).

  • XFI F1tality Titanium Mic problems.

Built a new computer and everything was running fine for a few weeks, sound was good, mic was good. But a few days ago I had to reformat due to some weird virus or somthing. All the same hardware as before. (Intel 3.0 quad core with 790i SLI motherboard (disabled onboard sound in bios), 4 gig ram, XFI Ftality Titanium PCI-E, GTX 285, Windows XP Home SP3 32bit)
Everything runs great, sound quailty is good, no problems with games. However I am using a Logitech Communicate STX webcam for a microphone (plugged into USB) and while recording/voice chat, it is very distorted and there is a constant clicking noise the plays every 0.2 seconds. I can hear my voice but it sounds way distorted and I can't be understood.
I am using the latest drivers for both the XFI and the webcam. I have uninstalled/reinstalled them many times and many different combos. I've clicked through various options in the windows control panel settings, moved the mic to a different USB slot. If I unplug the webcam the install the audio drivers, reboot, then install webcam drivers and plug in webcam, the microphone works, there is no distortion or clicking noise, but if I reboot my computer, the distortion and static comes back. If I mute the webcam, the clicking disappears. Its very strange because before I did the reformat, it worked fine when rebooting.

'. Previously before you reformatted. Were you also using both the latest updated drivers for the soundcard and webcam or are they different drivers now (newer)?
Try going to control panel --> sound devices and select your X-Fi card, go to properties and go to the Sound Blaster tab. Try disabling the enhanced effects and see if this helps the problem. If it does, then likely both your card and webcam are trying to "fight" for the same system resources.

  • Vista x64 and PCIe X-Fi Titanium Optical Problems

I am running Vista x64 SP and I have the 2.7.0004 drivers installed and when I try to use Dolby Li've or DTS, I can't use because everything says the current device is in use. I can't get optical to work with my Z-5500 speakers. It works fine on my XP SP3 though. I have dual boot XP/Vista x64.

something else to check even tho you maby already have done is checking if the checkboxes for full controll of the SPDIF is on in windows 7 (I dont know anything about 2008 so cant comment on that) but i know that that 2 checkboxes need to be checked for the digital sound to pass trough to the analog 6 channel wich is needed for your speakers.
just to be clear were talking about the same checkboxes as im not sure how its called in english exactly.
in windows 7 in the lower right? rightclick ont eh speaker and select playback devices
then select SPDIF out and select properties.
then go to advanced and make sure both checkboxes under exclusi've mode are checked.
from my experience it also highly depends on what program you use as not all movie/mediaplayers decode the digital signal to 6 channel analog correctly.
i myself prefer classic media player and in that program i had to rightclick the screen select the audio options and set to to decode to speakers from spdif.
i not sure how exactly your setup is set up but i know figuring out how everything should be set or even finding some settings is a massi've pain.

  • Titanium Ethernet Problems

Ok, I'm having a problem with a powerbook my boss owns, we have a mac/pc network, everything runs just fine we all use a dedicated server and calander program. Now our problem is his powerbook will be plugged into the net just fine connection ip internet surfing its all there... then it drops off, now he's on a simple hub and the hub continues to work, the other computers in his office on this hub all work even when his powerbook drops off. My main concern is that the logic board is going... so if anyone has any problem solving/tips to try please msg me back.
P.s. I have restarted the router, PBG4, and we cannot restart the modem because its well... "off limits" as per we work in a hospital and the main modem isn't a viable option of restarting.

    Hi there
Make sure that your SMB Workgroup is set to the correct one in directory access, as you are using a PC/Mac network.
To check this go to Macintosh HD -> Applications -> Utitlities -> Directory Access.
Double click Directory Access to launch it and click the Padlock bottom left to make changes. Enter your User Admin Password when promted and click SMB/CIFS and press Configure at the bottom. Make sure that the Workgroup and WINS Server (if you have one) are set correctly and press OK. Quit Directory Access
Give it a few minutes and try the network again, hopefully it should now stay on the network all the time.
Oh, if you have Airport card installed and you are using Ethernet to connect to the network, it is advisable to switch off Airport while you are cabled to the network.
    Hope that helps

You have to watch out for contextomy. What I said was, "AFAIK, Toast 8 does not support the Matroska (.mkv) format" (stress added), and also, "double-check the help file, user guide, or Roxio support" and "what you need to do is check the list of supported formats". Did you ever check it?
    Thanks for help anyway!

  • Major Microphone problems (1, 2, 3, Test, anybody ther

A while ago I wrote in this forum a work around to get the microphone connected to the back recognized by the Titanium Pro. This seems to work... BUT you will lose the "Microphone" input channel sooner or later and only the "Microphone FP" (which is only available for the Campion variant with a front panel!) will popup. I don't have any idea what triggers this.
Why is this a problem? Because software that relies on a micropone (like speach recognition - standard feature in Vista 64!) does not work.
And then there is the non-existent microphone boost of course.
Games cannot use that microphone either. It either doesn't work or is way too soft.
There is one thing I do know...
Creative has no respect for its customers. Instead of working on a solution, they do not care and do nothing. I have enough of their nonsense.
Selling stuff that doesn't work is a practice you would expect from crooks. In my opinion they are just that.
Work on the **bleep** drivers and give your customers what they have paid for. How hard is that? Or did you fire your best driver coder by accident?

MadGizmo, hi. I was one of the early adaptors to the Titanium. I read all of the supposed fixes but none work. A tempory "fix" is to go the computer store and buy a Plantronics ($30)?or Logitech($20) USB desktop PC microphone. That is working fine.
But MadGiz.....they didn't fire their best driver coder. The problem is that the company is very loyal to their?most senior?software/driver person who has been there a really long time and the guy really doesn't know how to do things properly. You have to respect a company that treats their most senior employees well, that part is admirable, but whenever it comes to driver problems they stick their heads in the sand and say "driver problems? I don't see any driver problems."
Did you notice that when you came in this forum it wasn't very easy to locate the Titanium Mic problem posts? There have been plenty of people mentioning it but the way these forums are laid out those those posts scroll by and then the Creative folks say "driver problems? I don't see any driver problems."
Tell me, do you see any forum sticky up at the top like you'd expect with a thread made by Creative that says Titanium Mic Issues Thread? We know it would make sense to see it there since this is their most recent card, but no....... Creative wants people who haven't bought the card yet to come into the forums and look around and say "Titanium driver problems? I don't see any driver problems. Maybe it's ok for me to go buy one now then."

  • Speeding up an early 2009 Mac Pro

This is not a question - it is an answer.
Starting configuration: Dual quad core 2.26GHz early 2009 Mac Pro (4,1) already expanded to 12 GB RAM; 175GB SSD, 1TB RAID 0 internal HD configuration, 2 1TB external d2 Quadra HDs (1 for cloned backup, the other for Time machine) connected via FW 800.  A Superdrive, and an LG Blu-Ray burner, both internal.
My uses:  Frequent business use of Microsoft Office and Acrobat Pro; occasional use of Adobe Photoshop Elements, frequent internet access via Safari and Mail; much use of iTunes and iPhoto, some Aperture, and occasional creation and burning of movies and slide shows to DVD and Blu-Ray with iDVD, Final Cut Express, Toast Titanium.
Problem:  Extremely slow from power on to the first open program with a usable menu (usually 2-1/2 minutes).  Extremely slow changing from one menu item to the next and very slow opening files.  Glacial at performing those operations if a backup was ongoing.
Earlier efforts: Followed conventional wisdom for speed by adding 6 GB of RAM, bringing it to 12 GB (though my RAM usage rarely exceeded 3 GB). Added a small SSD containing only the OS and all applications; mapped the home folder to the internal 1 TB RAID 0 comprising 2 540GB 7200 rpm SATA 2 drives (but - having to access the internal RAID for all data files made the addition of the small SSD a futile exercise).  The external drives are also 7200 rpm.
Here is what worked!! I replaced the 175GB SSD with a 1 TB Samsung EVO 840 SSD ($565) and re-mapped the home folder back to the SSD; added a Newer Tech MaxPower eSATA PCIe card ($87); connected the two external 1TB drives via eSATA rather than FW 800, which tripled their speed. My OS, applications and data files are around 600 GB, so the 1 TB SSD was large enough to handle everything, while the 175 GB drive wasn’t.
While the EVO 840 SSD and the eSATA card are SATA 3 rated (6Gb/s), the internal bus of the early Mac Pro is SATA 2 (3Gb/s), which is the maximum at which the system will operate.  In addition, the internal and external hard drives drives themselves are also SATA 2 (the Superdrive and Blu-Ray burner are SATA 1, but slow nothing down when not being used; and SATA 1 is plenty fast for burners limited to 16X anyway).
The result:  It now takes 60 to 61 seconds from power on until Safari opens with a useable menu (including the 5 seconds or so to select the user and log in), a speedup of 90 seconds.  In more stark terms, from power on to the log-in screen appears under the old setup was 46 seconds, and with the new, 41 seconds (system and RAM checks take roughly the same amount of time regardless of the drive used); but once the user is selected and the access code is entered, the new setup takes 14 to 15 seconds vice 1 minute 45 seconds!  Even better, moving from one menu item to the next in an open application is immediate. Files open quickly.  And, there is NO detectable slowdown while any of the frequent backups are ongoing.  Performance is now very fast, again.
My Mac Pro cost $3400 when new, and has of course been improved.  A used 2012 Mac Pro 6 core with 3.33 GHz chipset would have run $2800 or more, and provided slightly higher GeekBench scores operating single-core, but slower multi-core speeds than I already have. A 3.33GHz 12 core machine refurbished by Apple would have run $5400, and provided 1/3 faster single core speeds, and the multi-core speeds would have been twice as fast, according to GeekBench.  The new late 2013 4-core Mac Pro, while beautiful, would have run $4200 delivered (my upper limit), and would have required more investment to put the Superdrive and Blu-Ray burner into enclosures.  Here is what amazed me:  While its single-core speed would have been 78% faster, its multi-core GeekBench score was slower than my current machine!  I guess those extra 4 cores make a difference.
The GeekBench scores heavily weigh processor-intensive functions, such as video compositing and editing, or working with large photo and graphic files.  Those are not my primary uses, and spending money for significant performance gains in those areas made no sense for my use.  But the $650 I spent for the 1TB SSD and eSATA PCIe card completely solved the slowdown I was experiencing.  For my uses, that $650 was a much wiser investment than any of the other options.  It gave me speed where I needed it, and not where it would have done little for me.

True but I catch all the Mail, Cache, /SyncServices and /Application Support - and for some reason the /Preferences folder is getting hit a lot.
The reason I use CCleaner is just to wipe clean all the brower type caches in one fell swoop. They get large and unwildly and harder to manage. Easy and faster to just download. Use to use a RAMDisk for the "web.cache" file or folders at one time to speed up system and surfing.
The entire ~/Library is 3GB for me
So even if it was 10GB it would still be fine and make sense to include the "home user account" ~/Library (you can of course include more)
Only saying to locate my 700GB of documents, media files and libraries "elsewhere" - pefect for a 2TB hdd. Or a pair of 10K WD VR 1TB drives though even they are limited if using SATA2 AND you have the system on same bus you start to hit the 700MB/sec that Mac Pro controller can handle.
So the ideal would have high access and to allow concurrent searches and IO in memory first, in cache memory buffers to drive controller and drives, and then use  an SSD, before getting to the actual slower hdd. The choise of hdd also matters. Some 500GB drives are more like 85MB/sec at  best vs 145MB for a single 2TB Seagate Constellation ($200) or WD Black. And no need to take up two drive bays.
Back to case in point, if you want to put the entire user account on its own SSD, fine but its cost for what performance is not what I would do. Even a small 128GB or spend another $70 for 250GB SSD instead, and leave all the user home account's media files on a slow 7.2K drive.    Some 7.2k drives can do much much better on SATA3 / 6G.  The 1TB 10K WD VR gets writes as well as reads in the 180-200MB/sec. which is about as good as it gets outside of SSD on a SATA2 bus and is only $200 (4-8X the storage of the SSDs I was talking about).

  • OS X problems with Titanium PB G4

After trying to update OS 10.4.11 on my older PB G4 Titanium, I would get to the blue screen and the login window, but if I clicked on an account, the login window would disappear and then reappear. I could not log in. After numerous tries, I decided to reinstall the OS 10.4. But if would fail near the beginning of the install. So I tried installing 10.3 but it did the same thing. All these efforts were done using the archive and install. I even tried not preserving the settings, but that would not work.
Then I tried the Software Install and Restore disk that came with the PB G4. That worked, but I had to create a new account. So now I have some questions as to how to proceed from here:
    1. Why would 10.4 and 10.3 not install, but 10.2.3 on the Software Install and Restore Disk did install? Is is safe to proceed to try to install 10.4 now? Should the hard drive be erased in that process?
    2. With 10.2 running the old files are in the previous system folder, but the files for the account that was used are marked as not accessible. How do I copy those files to an external hard drive before doing an erase and install?

I've seen similar problems at multiple sites in various situations and in all instances it only affected the Macs and the PC's were fine. I'll try to be more specific by describing a recent event. Site A has 2 paths to the internet, the primary is through the local PIX firewall and the backup is through Site B that is connect via frame-relay and Site B's PIX firewall. The default router for Site A is a Cisco 4510 switch that learns it default route from OSPF messages from the PIX's and Frame-relay router. So, if Site A's PIX looses it's connection to the internet, the 4510 updates it's routing table to direct internet traffic through the frame-relay to Site B and it's PIX. All this works great for the PC's, but the Mac's have to reboot to be able to access the Internet when the routing changes. Recently the Internet T1 at site A went down. The routing tables updated with the path to Site B but the Mac users could not get email from the publicly addressed email server at another site. The Window's users were fine. After you reboot the Mac, it could then receive email. The nightmare started when the T1 would come up after about 30 minutes and then the Macs couldn't get email again. Wash, rinse and repeat.
Most of the clients use DHCP, some of them are static. They are all private IP's. Let me know if you need more info.

(Titanium Fatalty Pro SPDIF game problem hi all,
sorry if this issue reported in the past i but i could not get any answer on any relati've posts, the terminology was so complicated
i buy?a new pc with a Titanium Fatalty Pro sound card, i use Vista sp2 x64, the sound card is connected to my external amplifier with SPDIF out in order to get surround sound for my movies and my games and here is my problem
any movies format with surround sound play perfect with out any problem any kind of movie DVD, dvix, mkv?files?etc
but non of the games i play?use the surround system, why is that? is any?kind of special settings needed to be done? how is possible to get surround to movies and not to the games?
thanks you all for your time ?

,Re: Titanium Fatalty Pro SPDIF game problem? this is really coincidence - I just posted on the very same topic 5 minutes ago.
for games just go to the Console Entertainment mode > Encoder > Dolby Digital. Although this is not documented I believe what happens is that the sound card encodes the 6 digital channels onto Dolby Digital mode and transfers this over SPDIF. Kok-Choy actually recommend using the standard analogue cables (and he has a point as you are actually upcoding an existing game signal onto Dolby so that your digital receiver can then decode this down to 6 channels - seems a pretty useless overhead)
for video - I am curious to know what you do - I can either get 96/24 bits on the display of my z5500 with a direct signal but the z5500 receiver then tells me that this signal is only in dolby ProLogic II (and not DD or DTS). As alternati've I use again the encoder and have to select for EACH FILM WHAT IS BEST DOLBY DIGITAL OR DTS. Pls explain what settings you use.
    thanks

  • X-Fi Titanium Champion Series I/O Drive problems

0X-Fi Titanium Champion Series I/O Dri've problems? This is my final attempt to resolving this before?I request an RMA. I'm really hoping someone can help me figure out if my I/O dri've on my x-fi titanium Ch. Series is defecti've or it's a?software related problem. I don't get any sound from the headphone or mic jacks on the front dri've using headphones or headsets. The volume knob does?lower or raise in the Console Launcher?when I turn it and?as for the mic volume, I'm not sure. The LED's don't?light up at all, but if I press the Game Mode, CMSS-3D or Crystalizer I see them switching on the Console Launcher. The rear component does work as I can connect my speakers and get sound. I'm running Vista x64 Ult. Sp2 with the latest beta drivers 2.8 from daniel_K's support pack. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times also removed and replugged the device incase of a connection problem. I've searched all over these forums and googled several keywords and can't find a solution. Can anyone point me to the right direction? Is this a common problem with the front dri've? I've read various posts about customer technical support being useless so I'm not even wasting my time with that. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I had this exact same problem for a very long time, but after recently taking apart my machine to dust it out and whatnot I decided to have a go at plugging the device in again, and found that in order to plug it in properly for that larger connector you have to push it in really hard for it to go in all the way, to the point where it hurt my finger to do so. But after I did this (I had the card out while doing it, as it seemed impossible to get the connector in all the way otherwise) the lights and ports worked properly.
Hopefully it's this simple for you, but I can imagine it is due to the fact your problem was word for word exactly the same as mine.

4X-Fi Titanium Fatalitysound card optical in problemsF Ok so heres my problem. I have ?a Sony PS3 and it can output Dolby Digital 5. and DTS 5.. Ive tried both with the sound card decoding each one respectivly and with the Dolby Digital 5., theres no sound atall while playing a game like GT5 which on the box supports that output. Then with DTS the sound is just stereo and with the normal 2. settings it just plays2. as it should. ?Now i know that digital is capable of carrying 5. audio otherwise whats the point in it.. I also know the PS3 can output it. ?What i dont know is why i cant hear anything from my soundcard when it should be able to decode and play out my ****ouge outputs.
Any help would be appreciated even if it doesnt work :P
Also i have tried it with and without CMSS and Crystaliser. Also on all modes, Gaming, Audio creation, Entertainment.

Apparently customer support doesn't bother to read the emails either. Well nevermind.
) The problem of soundquality can allegedly be solved with 'underclocking' the PCIe Slot to 90Mhz. **bleep** pity, that my mainboard doesn't support lower clocks than 00MHz.
    2) At least i fixed the microphone problem. Surforguy, which Operating system do you use? I managed to find a solution for XP SP3.

  • Microphone problem X-fi titanium and Windows 7

? Just got my X-fi titanium, installed Daniel_k's X-fi supportpack .0. When i try to use my microhphone, it seems like "What you hear" is enabled. I can hear my own voice in my headset.
Tried to disable "What you hear" in windows sound options, but it does not help. Tried to change from game mode to entertainment mode also changed to audio creation mode in creative console launcher, but nothing seems to help.
Anyone got the microphone working properly in windows 7?
The sound output works really fine though, much better sound quality than the onboard soundcard. (I have disabled the onboard sound and uninstalled it's drivers)
Also tried to connect my front panel from my Antec P82 with the Hd audio cable, same issue here, I can hear my own voice.

I have a X-Fi Titanium Fatalty Pro running Windows XP SP2 and experienced the same problem (I'm running the original Titanium drivers). I usually keep mine set on Game Mode, so I went and checked the mixer in creative console to check my volume levels and realized that I had the volume turned up on the line-in/microphone that is next to the recording line-in/microphone volume. All I had to do was mute the line-in/micropone volume (NOT THE RECORD VOLUME) and bingo, no more hearing myself talk into the mic as I talked.

I have fully updated to latest software and firmware. Could this be a software conflict on my Mac Pro. Can anyone help?

I get this error sometimes. Can you click on "Connect As" right under the error, and then provide the name and password? This usually resolves the issue for me.

I am an activist when it comes to rip-offs and I intend to set up a group to pressure the Ausralian government to legislate to make all computer software producers to make all new software compatible with all old software AT NO COST to the user.
I thought about that myself, but when it comes to Windows XP. It is peculiar that software companies get away with "selling" software that suddenly stops working properly. The problem with XP is of course an environmental one as well. There is a huge number of fully functional PCs that suddenly are no longer supported by Microsoft, and that are not powerful enough to take newer supported MS operating systems. What MS basically recommends people is to throw them away with a horrible cost for our environment.
