TM erased my backups after restore!!

So i just tried the restore feature of TM, it took about 2hrs and then rebooted fine. I went away and came back and TM told me my external was full. I checked it and 28gb was left plus my original TM backup folder. I opened Documents and pressed TM and it only went back to my install, all other saves were not there.
Is this correct? Why would TM remove all the older backups? Also if i choose to switch drives but revert back to the original backup drive will it ignore all older backups and erase them again? This doesnt make sense.

If you have written to the drive since the loss, no recovery.
Second, Time Machine is NOT an file archive program. It is made to recover files that you accidentally deleted or if a system dies.
If you want to archive files, use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner that will copy new images over to the drive on a schedule.

  • My phone is stuck in recovery mode, and iTunes will only let me restore to factory settings.  My question: Can I restore from iTunes backup after restoring to factory settings?

I attempted to update to iOS 8 and now my phone is stuck in recovery mode, and iTunes will only let me restore to factory settings.  My question: Can I restore from iTunes backup after restoring to factory settings?

    Hi, kformagg
I would say yes. I once had the same problem (iPhone 5, IOS 7) and first restored to factory settings and after that from iCloud backup.
    It worked very well.

  • Time Machine Deleted All Backups After Restore

Had a very strange thing happen...I had to do a clean reinstall of Mountain Lion and manually add back everything from various backups. After the reinstall (including a completely new computer name), I was able to access all the old Time Machine backups to restore folders from. However, once I restored one folder, TM wrote over the entire old set of backups (over 6 months worth) with a new backup of the current state, deleting everything and renaming the containing folder to the new computer name. Is there any way I can get back what it deleted? How could this have happened?
No doubt Im done using Time Machine...no matter how anal I am about backing up, I still end up losing tons of irreplacable data (I had much of the TM backup also backed up on another external drive but, go figure that drive would fail literally simultaneously as this incident).
Any suggestions on how to move forward, if possible at all?
    Thanks!

Depending on how you restored your data, Time Machine may not recognize your previous backups as belonging to the same machine. It will then delete as many snapshots as necessary to make room for a full backup of all files. Once the snapshots are deleted, they can't be recovered.
Another time, when you erase the boot volume, restore from Time Machine in Setup Assistant so that your backup history will be preserved.
As this experience shows, you need more than one backup to be safe. I suggest you start a new backup set on another, larger, external drive.

  • Time Machine deletes older backups after restore...

Yesterday I took the plunge to replace a failing 4TB RAID0 on my MacPro running ML 10.8.3. The RAID volume contains two non-admin user accounts for everyday work that together are about 2TB.
I installed the two new HDDs, RAIDed them and gave them the same name as before. Then I ran a restore of the two accounts from my Time Machine backup. This took about 4 hours.
Not everything was fine at the end (particularly some permissions in Documents were wrong), but by and large the accounts worked. Today it was time for Time Machine to backup the new changes, but this failed miserably: TM completely deleted the earlier backups even though 99.99% did not have changed. Later TM complained it did not have enough space even though the earlier backup fit on exactly the same volume and there was definitely enough space.
Conclusion: Don't trust TM to keep older backups after a restore. This extremely stupid behaviour fits my impression of ML being unusable for serious Mac users.

When a startup drive is replaced Time Machine creates a new backup because the new drive has a different UUID than the old one -- it is a different disk.
When this occurs, TM does not delete the older backup sparsebundle, which is still taking up space on the backup drive. This is a safety feature.
You can access the previous backup using Browse Other Time Machine Disks from the TM icon in the Dock.
Lots of good info can be found here.

  • How to backup and apply the backup after restored my iPod?

Hi, I just want to know how can I backup my iPod and apply the backup after I restored my iPod. Thanks.

Do you have all the songs contained in your iPod also in iTunes?
If the songs/content of your iPod all show up in iTunes under Library and the various subcategories (music, videos, ...) when you launch it, then they are "backed up" already. Then you can just restore your iPod and re-sync.
If the only existing copy of the files is on your iPod, then you need to move them from the iPod to another disk drive. I'm not sure how to do that, except for iTunes store purchases, you need to use some other procedure/program outside of iTunes.

  • Time Machine does not recognize older backups after restore

Leopard Server OSX.5.8, Mac Mini Intel
After a severe failure I had to restore the server (I used a fresh, spare Mini to restore to) from a Time Machine backup.
    Everything went fine so far.
I tried to continue the backup on the same external harddrive, but the backup history is no more recognized by Time Machine, it want to backup the whole drive from the beginning.
The disk is full which is normally not a problem, as Time Machine deletes the oldest backups to deallocate space.
I don't want to lose the old history. What can be done to make Time Machine using this backup set again?

    Hi Pondini,
I got it fixed today, thank you everyone for your help. The thing that ended up fixing it was deleting the hidden files ".com.apple.timemachine.supported" and ".002332b4a7fc" on the root directory of the time machine disk. Now my months worth of backups are viewable again!
I didn't find this on your website (maybe I didn't look hard enough). If it's not there, perhaps it would be a good thing to add to your site? Hopefully it will save a few people some frustration! Thanks for making the site - it looks like a great resource.

  • Ethernet backup after restore taking ages

After a bad upgrade to 10.5.5 I restored my mac mini from timecapsule - surprisingly quick and simple.
Now it wants to backup just about the entire disk (about 30GB) presumably because everything has been updated.
However, its progressing at a snails pace - it would take a couple of months to finish. I've rebooted and restarted several times.
This is with direct ethernet connection between timecapsule and the mini, the same connection that the restore took hours to do, I can copy files to and from the disk on the timecapsule at MBs a second.
The backup file is just over 500GB have about 128G left on the timecapsule
    Any ideas?

    mac-andrew,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    Try the follwing...
    *Create An “Ethernet Only” Location*
While you are physically connected to the Time Capsule via ethernet you may still be experiencing slow data transfer speeds because your Airport network is still active and taking priority.
First, verify that one end of the Cat-5 Ethernet cable is connected to one of the LAN ports of the TC (<•••>) NOT to the WAN port (wheel icon).
Next, go to System Prefs --> Network.
At the top of the window change “Location:” to “Edit Locations”.
Click the “+” button and create a new location named “Ethernet Only”.
    Click “Done”.
In the Services Pane on the left, eliminate all other services using the “-” button leaving “Ethernet” only.
    Click “Apply”.
You should be seeing an assigned IP Address and the Status should say “Connected”. The dot beside “Ethernet” should be green.
No try backing up and see if transfer speeds improve.
Let us know if this was helpful.
    Cheers!

  • Backup after Restoration of HD

I had to restore my hard drive using Time Capsule. Now when it goes to backup, it says that the backup is larger than the available space on the HD. I am sure I have the space though. Was it something about the restore? How can I backup? Thank you

You can erase the drive if you feel there is no information on the backup that you need to recovery from. You will then get the space back.

  • Time Machine Backup after Restore

I have been using Time Machine for months without a hitch. I also put some other files on the external that I am using for Time Machine. Recently I decided to sell my brother my old Macbook so I can get a new computer.
I reinstalled Leopard on the macbook, erasing everything that was there before. I did not use my time machine backups because I only need a few files for my brother. Now when I connected the 500 GB WD USB external harddrive, it sometimes shows up in Disk Utility, but does not mount and I cannot access and of the files. What can I do, ALL of my files are backed up here?

Try right clicking on it and mounting it.

  • Time Machine wants to do complete backup after restore

I had to restore my system from a Time Machine backup because of a recurring problem. Now Time machine wants to backup my entire drive as if I'm actually starting over. I've got 300GB left on my backup drive and this complete backup will use 133GB of it. I have had to do this in the past but I don't remember that Time Machine wanted to do a complete backup before. Is there something I can do to prevent it?
    Thanks,
    Frank

See User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.
Might find something helpful in the above.

  • How can I access old Time Machine backups after restoring from Time Machine?

Just restored my iMac and I can only see "Now" when I enter Time Machine. How can I see all the backups and dates I had before I restored?

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

  • Backup after restore question.

    Hey everyone,
My question is if it is possible to ONLY recover the SMS history and contacts from a backup and nothing else. How can I do this? I really need to do a clean wipe of everything else but the SMS history and contacts.
Please help me and thanks in advance!

The restore from backup process is ALL or nothing. There is no way to do a selective restore of data. Contacts should be synced to a supported application on your computer, that makes it real easy to sync such back to your phone. Not syncing contacts & only storing such on your phone is asking for trouble.
There are third party software solutions that can extract data from your iphone backup, but none that I know of that can then restore such data back to a non-jailbroken phone:

  • Install backup after restore

My phone was stolen back in January so i had to buy another phone and
i used the backup to install all the contacts and information. Yesterday i
had to restore the phone to factory settings and then when i went to
install my backup it was no where to be found. What did Apple change
to make it harder for people to install their backup? I have MobileMe and
my Iphone backup information was not their either.
    Bueller.....Bueller......anyone.....anyone

In iTunes go to iTunes>Preferences. Then go to the Devices Tab. See if there a backup listed here. If not i would check your trash and make sure it didnt go in there for some reason.

    Hi,
I have a iPhone4 and backed it up before reset to factory defaults. Now, I want to restore only contacts and messages stored in my backup.
Can someone let me know whether this is possible?
If yes, please help me with steps to restore only contacts and messages.
    Thanks!

The restore from backup process is all or nothing, there is no selective restore process.
