TM HDD almost full
Just recently TM saved me from a major HDD crash.
Now my 1TB lacie is almost full, specially after the crash TM did a major backup of 130GB.
NOW my lacie is getting full, should I delete older backups?
Whats next?
I think you should consider what you are backing up. Note that you can exclude items in System Preferences->Time Machine->Options.
There are certain folders that are not necessary to include in TM - see for instance [here|http://www.ryanblock.com/2008/05/good-folders-to-exclude-from-time-machin e-backups>.
I exclude my iTunes library because I have the music a) either on CDs or b) on DVDs (using iTunes' "Backup to disc" function to burn downloaded music).

This is my first time to try SuperDuper to backup my HDD as I'm planning to upgrade my MBP
after completing about half of the task, SuperDuper was not able to continue the backup, and a message from Snow Leopard says: HDD almost full please delete some files....and SuperDuper stopped the task. now My old HDD is full ( about 70 or 80 GB were free before I run SuperDuper ) so it seems that super duper has some leftovers for the uncompleted task. and Idea were or how to find, and delete them?
I don't want to remove unnecessarily 70 GB to my new HDD
BTW: I've tried : "show package content" of Super duper and there was nothing there! Also, try taking a look at where hard drive space is being used, including where an external drive would be in
./Volumes
there should be a small alias, at times when a drive doesn't mount, there will be
volume and volume1
and there could be your backup there under one of the two, and the next time you go to backup it will backup to the wrong place, your boot drive instead of "volume".

Can I create separate folders to save media on my Airport Time Capsule? Issue is I have a 256GB HDD Mac Pro Retina which is almost full. TC will only take backup of my HDD. So where would I save my photos and videos from my iPhone and iPad?
It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less. -
I have macbook pro 13" I want to know how to copy files from my mac to the external Toshiba Hard Drive. I can't even delete files from my external hard drive. please help me my macbook HD is almost full and I have to copy my images to the Toshiba HD
To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.

hi all. I am a new user for the ibookg4. I just received an error "start up disk is almost full, delete
files. I am now sure what or where to do this. can anyone advise.
thanks all and good day to everyonetony:
A too full startup disk is a serious issue as it can cause directory issue which can result in data loss or corruption. It is therefore an issue you cannot afford to ignore.
Your startup disk can be too full either because you have too much stuff which you have put on the disk, or because the system is repeating processes and creating entries in the console. If the former is the case there are two things you need to do. First, you should backup you drive immediately, using an external HDD and a utility like SuperDuper. Second, you need to lighten the load by removing some files. Third, even if you delete some files, you will probably run into the same issue again as your computing habits seem to indicate the need for a larger HDD.
To determine exactly what is on your HDD, and where your disk space is going, download and run either WhatSize 10.3.91 or Disk Inventory. Either one will scan your HDD and list your files/folders by size. Then you need to look over the list and see if you see any very large file that looks suspicious. Post back with your findings.

Why do i get a startup disk almost full message?
I am getting a message that my startup disk is almost full. My HDD is roughly 500GB and 327GB are free. Doesn't make much sense to me. Any ideas? Something strange in one of the latest updates? Is there some setting I need to change in order to open up more memory for system files? Something else?
Thanks!

its saying startup disk almost full. have no music or photos on computer. how do i clear it up and free up the HD
There are some items to the right of these reply boxes,
of them a few are likely to be of help to some extent...
Without knowing which OS X version, advice will be not specific
and to answer three different ways when one of them is correct
is a waste of time.
Is your OS X newer than Lion 10.7.5? IF so different rules apply
to finding out what is free space, where it is, & how to tell if it is.
For systems older than Lion (Snow Leopard, Leopard, Tiger, Panther)
the rules are a little different, since there would not be an Other item
on the hard disk drive which could contain items necessary to the OS
yet not detailed to the user.
And Lion 10.7 has a few hidden files that are hard to locate, and one
of them may have some bearing on the missing space of a HDD.
The items here, mostly for 10.7:

start up disk full, other options:

There are Support articles, you could use Help viewer in the
system, on your computer, to look for results; or use google.
However, avoid the temptation to use a badware such as cleanmymac,
mackeeper, and others that are sources of known trouble to the Mac.
Good luck & happy computing! -
If my SSD on my Air is almost full, will it slow down the computer?
If my SSD on my Air is almost full, will it slow down the computer? As in, if I have about 20GB left on my SSD, will the computer run slower?
Rule of thumb tends to be that you should set aside 10% of disk space for SSDs for the best speed. This comes from SSDs in Windows PCs, where the SSDs do perform more slowly when full rather than having some free space. This is just how SSDs work, which I won't get into the technicalities of. The SSD controllers themselves allocate set a reserve space (this could not be true in Apple's case, depending on what chips they use), but generally the more free space the better. So 64GB should set aside 6GB, 128GB should set aside 12GB, and 256GB should set aside 25-26GB.
SSDs technically will never be as fast as when you first got it. They slow down as soon as you start to write data to them, but the slowdown will be negligible. It's still faster than a HDD at the end of the day. -
My icloud storage is almost full, yet it doesn't seem like it should be?
Help. My icloud storage is almost full. Because of that I can't back up my iphone. My friends and I can't figure out why it is so full. It is in the photo area, but nothing seems crazy big. I only have about 315 photos and 20 videos on my phone. Not even long videos - all are 5 minutes or less. Anyone have advise on what to look for?

HardDisk almost full suddenly on a Desktop 3000 S200 Vista
Would someone be kind enough to give me a hand? My Desktop is Lenovo 3000 S200 (9684-A24)
running on a Win Vista.
The system was purchased 5 months ago. I haven't kept many files or install much software. But the hard disk, originally having a 320GB in memory, is almost full now. It shows that there's 293GB being utilized on the SW_Preload(C : ).
It seems that the system is still running OK even though the speed is no quite satisfactory. I'm afraid I'll facing problem in the near future.
Please give me some advice if anyone has got the experience & fix it before. Thanks a lot in advance!!hello the resuce and recovery must have made base backups in ur system also try disabling volume shadow copy only if you dont require it
i would sujjest a nift utility like tune up utilities 2008 believe me it works great and saved 4 gb on my ultimate

I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB. lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive? I opened the hard drive and from the column on the left of the menu I've selected "search for" and under that " all images" then "all documents" I've deleted a few files from each. Are documents and images that I have deleted from here also deleted from the folders on my desktop?
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Delete any other mail in your Junk folders. Also, look through your Sent Mail to see if there is anything that can be deleted.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
Good Luck! -
I have deleted many unwanted files and apps and yet the available space keeps depleting every time i am using my Macbook Pro. I believe under the OS 10.7.4 one of the features is it backups or has backgrounding features which uses memory. Sometimes even when i hv 8GB space after using my Macbook Pro for say 2hrs surfing internet and using Pages which has a "Save Version" feature suddenly my 8GB goes down to 300+MB only and it starts prompting me "My Startup Disk is almost full" once it reaches 1GB space left. How can i get more space.... Please someone can help me? Do i need to re-format my hardisk??!! Any help out there is greatly appreciated.
My original HD is 320GB. And i don't hv too many Apps installed. I do have abt 50-70apps. I do have many photos and videos stored in iPhoto's Library though. One thing I've noticed is that a shared tab pops up when I open the finder under "favorites" with a random connection. It's called hp68b... None of my friends that I live with have this and we all use the same internet. Two days ago when I would click it and click get info, it said it was a pc. When I checked it today it said it is a "sharepoint" and looks like a harddrive.
I took it too the store after i spilt water on it but when I got it back it ran perfectly fine. I don't know a lot about computer so if somebody could help me. It says I'm connected to it and I can't disconnect or delete it. I don't know if the guy at the computer store put something in my computer and is sharing all my files. -
I deleted files from my MacBook Air after it said my start up disk was almost full. It did several xs, then the color wheel wouldn't stop spinning, so I closed it. Then after a sufficient amount of time, I tried to start it up again, only now the Apple start up wheel just spins non stop and nothing else happens. How or what can I do to get my MacBook Air to work again, without having to take it in? Thanks so much!
Backup your MBA then take it to Apple

Forget the iTunes crash for the time being. Receiving this message is serious, and you need to take action. While the notion that Mac OS X needs 10% or 15% or whatever percentage of your hard disk free is an urban legend, it is nevertheless true that it does need free space; how much depends on your machine and what you do with it. At the very basic level, you should aim to have no less than ~5GB free at all times. See

for tips on reclaiming disk space.
