TNS-12516

Hi,
I am running 10g XE on Windows server 2003. It runs well for a couple of days but then starts going bad with TNS-12516 errors in the listener.log file. Here is a portion of the log. The first entry is a successful connection but the next fails. Any idea why this just starts happening?
thanks
Jason

TNS-12516: TNS:listener could not find available handler with matching protocol stack

Yes, this solution works!
I have the same error during loading several hundred files with SQL*Loader.
And only what I have changed is processes parameter in spfile up to 400 value.

  • TNS-12547 lost contact - listener log has TNS-12516??

    OS: Win98
    DB: Personal Oracle8i 8.1.6
    Attempting to make connection from JDBC and eventually found out even TNSPING has problems. I have a listener configured on port 1521, using 127.0.0.1 as the host (I'm doing development on same machine).
    I do lsnrctl start LISTENER, but afterwards a lsnrctl status LISTENER returns nothing. Not sure if it only replies if there is a problem. Anyway, it seems like the listener is running, otherwise I'd get a different error, like no listener.
    I can't find docs on TNS-12516, and the explanation of 12547 isn't very helpful. The full error text in the listener.log is as follows:
    22-JUN-2001 16:05:24 * handoff * giop * 12516
    TNS-12516: TNS:listener could not find available handler with matching protocol stack.
    I can provide more info if needed.

    I also have the same problem. It doesn't seem to happen regularly but off and on. When this database state occurs, I can't even shutdown the database. It appears to hang due to an unknown cause. When I check my listener log, I see that the error messages I was getting were the TNS-12516 errors. The really odd thing is that some of my Perl DBI and PHP programs were still going through without a problem while my sql*plus and discoverer connections were dying with the TNS-12516 error. If anyone has ANY ideas at all, please respond.

  • Can not build TNS connection from remote station but local do

    i install a new instance, everything work well in local machine,
    invole local service name, however, once i do the same work to
    build a new TNS service name by net assist at another (remote)
    machine, it always prompt on: " target object is not availabe"
    or something like this;
    i wonder why the local TNS service connection can work(it seems
    proved everything well), but remote can't, what is the problem?
    thank in advance

    I entered the following message on Sep. 29th and have not yet received a reply so I'm repeating it here:
    I could not get IIOP to work either remotely or locally on my server. My environment runs Oracle 8.1.6 under Windows 2000 Server.
    Per Oracle documentation, I added:
    DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = SERVERNAME)(PORT = 2481))
    (PROTOCOL_STACK =
    (PRESENTATION = GIOP)
    (SESSION = RAW)
    to my listener.ora file and:
    mts_dispatchers="(protocol=tcp)(presentation=oracle.aurora.server.SGiopServer)"
    to my init.ora file. When I used the sses_sh command I got the following first few lines:
    "Exception in thread "main" org.omg.CORBA.COM_FAILURE[completed=MAYBE, reason = java.net.SocketException: Socket failed]..."
    Looking at the log I got the following error:
    "TNS-12516 TNS:listener could not find available handler with matching protocol stack".
    I didn't see anything interesting in the trace file.
    Is there something else I need to do to get the listener to find the proper protocol stack? Has anyone encountered and found the solution to this problem?

    Hi all,
    The oracle database I am using now is 11G R2 and I am having problems doing schedule backup. I have already looked up the forums and some of the solutions posted included
    1) Restarting EM
    2) Recreate the schedule
    The link to the forum post is here. Re: Initialization error stopping execution of scheduled backup
    However, I would like to know what is the root cause for this problem, and why this is happening.
    Could it be due to the database experiencing ORA-12519 issues? (http://www.dadbm.com/2011/11/oracle-listener-refused-connection-ora-12519-troubleshooting/)

  • Listener.log error notification

    How can i get a notification when an error arise in the listener.log?
    I was able to setup the alert.log notification and when an error arise there i receive a mail.
    But i dont know how to set this up for the listener.ora.
    I have sometimes TNS- error and i have to manualy search the listener.log to see it.
    Im using oem grid control 10.2.0.1 and my target oracle databases are on 10.2.0.3.
    all running on linux x86.

    Im having those 2 tns errors sometimes:
    TNS-12519: TNS:no appropriate service handler found
    TNS-12516: TNS:listener could not find available handler with matching protocol stack
    On metalink, it says to Increase the value for PROCESSES.
    I increased it from 250 to 350. This problem is happening less frequently since.
    But once in a while, it happens. I need to be notified when it's happen.
    If u use a user defined metric for this, what do i do? I issue a linux command on my listener.log file? If so which command?

    Metalink ID 1462776.1
    1. The Oracle Database instance is configured by default to run only 150 PROCESSES;
    the maximum load for dedicated connections is determined by the PROCESSES parameter.
    When the listener believes the current number of connections has reached maximum load, it may set the state of the
    service handler for an instance to "blocked" and begin refusing incoming client connections with the following error (in biserver1.log set in debug level):
    "TNS-12516 TNS:listener could not find instance with matching protocol stack"
    Tip:
    Verify the Oracle database processes parameter setting. It is also a good idea to make sure the Oracle database sessions and open cursors settings are large enough.
    2. Increase the number of concurrent client connections (sessions) to OBI server.
    Each client request to OBI Server uses one SERVER_THREAD.
    Each SERVER_THREAD uses 0 or more DB_GATEWAY_THREADs depending upon the number of DB queries executed.
    Following NQSConfig.INI parameters need to be tuned (refer to OBIEE tuning guide for details on initial values to be set):
    [ SERVER ]
    MAX_SESSION_LIMIT
    SERVER_THREAD_RANGE
    DB_GATEWAY_THREAD_RANGE
    3. Cleanup Web catalog via instanceconfig.xml using the steps documented in "Validating the Catalog" in System Administrator's Guide for Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition.
    4. In instanceconfig.xml file for each instance, add the following parameters within Cache/Query tags:
    <Cache>
    <Query>
    <MaxEntries>10000</MaxEntries>
    <AbsoluteMaxEntries>20000</AbsoluteMaxEntries>
    <CruiseEntries>3000</CruiseEntries>
    <ForceLRU>true</ForceLRU>
    </Query>
    </Cache>
    5. Make sure you have enough system resources available on BI Servers (sawserver, nqsserver).
    6. Unstable network connection link between OBIEE servers and Database server.

    Julie,
    Can you check the location registration for all locations? It looks like you hit TNS-12516:
    TNS-12516 TNS:listener could not find available handler with matching protocol stack
    Cause: None of the known and available service handlers for the given SERVICE_NAME support the client's protocol stack: transport, session, and presentation protocols.
    Action: Check to make sure that the service handlers (for example, dispatchers) for the given SERVICE_NAME are registered with the listener, are accepting connections, and that they are properly configured to support the desired protocols.
    Mark.

  • Essbase Cluster - Lease manager is no connecting to the DB

    I have a SEV1 open with Oracle Support and is escalated to Development
    Any help is wellcome...
    Thank you all!

    Hi All,
    Problem solved...
    The problem as you know was a connection issue to the Oracle DB from the OPMN, this one tries to connect to the DB (lese manager) to establish who is the active node and since the connection wasn’t happening, all nodes kill themselves as a default action.
    After a long troubleshooting with TCP/IP and SQL.net traces we realize that the requests from OPMN existed but the response from the DB was not coming back and the reason why is how the Data Direct driver works. All EPM apps use a JDBC driver, this one is a little bit smarter and once you connect it to the SCAN-VIP it resolves everything automatically, even though we were using an alias for the SCAN-VIP (named oracle-grid). Data Direct drivers is not that smart and need to be connected to the actual SCAN name configured in the Oracle RAC, so while the request was going OK using the alias name (oracle-grid) the response was not, because it needs to have the same name as the SCAN (scan.hostname.com).
    Once changed the alias name to the SCAN connection were happening and Essbase started in fail-over mode.
    Thank you all for your suggestions!

  • ORA-12516: TNS:listener could not find ... on Windows Server 2003

    We are getting "ORA-12516: TNS:listener could not find available handler" while testing asp.net web application.
    We have following configuration:
    - A 10g database server on Windows Server 2000
    - A Web Server running IIS6 on Windows Server 2003
    - ODP.Net for 10g client installed on Web Server
    we are testing our web app with 75 concurrent users, as far as I can tell we are closing connections in our app and open connection only while retrieving and saving records.
    I saw this error very first time when we upgraded our web server to use 10g client. Before that we were using Oracle 9 client and have tested this app with 100 concurrent users without any error.
    Does anyone can help or point a resource that can help to resolve this error?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    You'll likely want to take that up with the networking folks as the error seems to be coming from the Listener.
    How many connections does each instance of your app make? If you make the same number of connections via sqlplus for example rather than ODP, do you see the same results? I know creating 60 or sqlplus sessions may not be fun, but it will help determine if this issue is truly somehow related to ODP. It doesnt seem likely it would be, and if ODP can be removed from the picture, it will be that much easier to troubleshoot.
    One thing I'd suggest though, is to make sure your app is cleaning up after itself properly to as to use resources efficiently. If you have access to My Oracle Support, see the following note:
    Note 730678.1 Oracle Data Provider for .Net Best Practices
    Hope it helps,
    Greg

  • ORA-12516, TNS:listener could not find available handler Weblogic error

    Hello,
    I have a wierd issue while setting up a datasource in weblogic.
    The database am trying to connect to is an Oracle DB and am using a LDAP based URL as the datasource URL in weblogic.
    Service name : PSG03900_PEWTER_APPL.WORLD
    The LDAP url given was jdbc:oracle:thin:@ldap://oid_ldap_server_ln.csfp.co.uk:1522/PSG03900_PEWTER_APPL.WORLD,cn=OracleContext,dc=uk,dc=csfb,dc=com
    driver oracle.jdbc.xa.client.OracleXADataSource
    When am trying to setup the datasource and test the connection configuration the test is successful. However when I try to activate the changes I get the following error:
    An error occurred during activation of changes, please see the log for details.
    weblogic.application.ModuleException:
    Listener refused the connection with the following error: ORA-12516, TNS:listener could not find available handler with matching protocol stack The Connection descriptor used by the client was: (DESCRIPTION = (SDU = 8192) (TDU = 8192) (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = PSGLOD2008-SCAN.AP.HEDANI.NET)(PORT = 1522)) (LOAD_BALANCE = ON) (FAILOVER = ON ) ) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = PSG03900_PEWTER_APPL.WORLD) (FAILOVER_MODE = (TYPE = SESSION) (METHOD = BASIC) (RETRIES = 20) (DELAY = 5))))
    The DBAs have confirmed to me that the database setup on their side is correct as they are able to do a tnsping and sqlplus connectivity succeeds.
    I have also tried accessing the database through PL/SQL developer and am able to login however the weblogic activation fails for some wierd reason.
    Could I request someone to enlighten me what I am missing here? I have been at it for days now.
    Many thanks.
    Best Regards,
    Vinod

    Hi Kishore,
    Thank you for the response.
    The number of processes has been set to 500 and number of sessions set to 792 and currently the utilization has just reached 15% of the limit set.
    We are using Weblogic 9.2 and trying to connect to Oracle 11g database, could the Oracle thin client being used in Weblogic have any issues connecting?
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
    I have some PHP applications which connect to Oracle database.
    I sometime receive the following error message.

    I already had that error message in the past. At that time, I looked at the V$RESOURCE_LIMIT view and I saw session and process parameters were too small so I increased its.
    Now, I checked again to these parameters and values never went nearly the max values.

    Is it possible it can from another thing ? What is the best way to never have this error message again ? What is max value for sessions and processes that Oracle can support ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Best regards.

    Why do I am having (HOST=178.32.113.43)(PORT=1521) in the error message? I am using only the DNS name.
    my tnsnames.ora file:
    NV =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = dns_name)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = NV)
    and in my php connection function I also use the DNS name as the host and username/password like:
    $connect = ocilogon($username, $password, 'dns_name');
    Should I connect in another way ? like:
    $ora_host='(DESCRIPTION =(ADDRESS =(PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = dns_name)(PORT = 1521))(CONNECT_DATA =(SID = NV)))';
    $connect = ocilogon($username, $password, $ora_host);
