TNS error ORA-12154

Hi all,
One of our client is trying to connect to our database from his local pc. We are able to connect to the database fine from here.
But when he connects from his pc via vpn it gives him this error:
Ora-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
I checked the path and the Oracle client is in the path on his pc. Tnsping works. Not sure what else I should check. I do not have access to his pc, I just have to troubleshoot on the phont.
Below is his sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora.
# SQLNET.ORA Network Configuration File: C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\network\admin\sqlnet.ora
#NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES)
# tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\NETWORK\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora
# Generated by Oracle configuration tools.

Please give me your suggestions.
Thanks.

When you do the tnsping, does it say using tnsnames or hostname? I've noticed it can be a bit confusing when you have a host running oracle that is not in your tnsnames.ora, it will successfully tnsping, because the host has a listener running, but you can't attach because the connection string is different. For example, I can tnsping a host named POLARIS, which is not in my tnsnames.ora, but it is in DNS and is running XE. D'Oh!
You might consider trying a service_name that matches your lsnrctl status output, rather than SID in the tnsnames.ora. It's also possible the user has multiple tnsnames.ora (especially if several things have been installed), and is picking up the wrong one. Try changing things the connect name to something just plain weird and see if it makes a difference. See if there is TWO_TASK in your environment, too.
Other reasons I'm going bald: case sensitivity of the SID; having two nearly identical entries in the tnsnames.ora and not scrolling down while editing; sqlnet.ora strangenesses; and I've "seen" (in earlier versions, anyways), invisible characters causing problems.

    In VB6, using oo4o(Oracle InProc Server),
    whin I run debuging mode with VB6 App, result is successfull.
    But, compile this application, and execute EXE module,
    error occur 'Cannot resolve TNS Name (ORA-12154)'.

    Just make sure that the executable is not started from a directory path containing brackets (e.g. "C:\Program Files (x86)\MyApp\myapp.exe") but copy that executable to a directory path without brackets. The brackets in one of the directies in the path may lead to the Oracle exception "ORA-12154: TNS :could not resolve service name".

    As you can see, I have tried adding an alias for the default domain
    name suffix '.qonnectis.com' in the tnsnames.ora files on the solaris

    Just to add to the fun, the 'new' server running Ora 10g CANNOT connect
    to the old server running Ora 9:
    sqlplus user/pass@nn_qq3
    sqlplus user/pass@nn_qq3.qonnectis.com both fail.
    While the old 9.0 server CAN connect to the new 10g one:
    sqlplus user/[email protected] succeeds.

  • Discoverer Plus Error: ORA-12154:TNS:could not resolve the

    Hi,
    I’m running the Discoverer report in Discoverer Plus and getting the below error, but when the same report ran in Desktop completes successfully and the SQL from the report is running without error in SQL nav.
    Database Error - ORA-12154:TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Sunil

    Hi Sunil,
    Did you test the direct method I posted above? That will bypass the tnsnames.ora file. If it connects fine that way, then you likely have a configuration issue with your sqlnet.ora and/or tnsnames.ora
    You can test with:
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/tnsping <tnsalias>
    If it is successful, then check if you have the TNS_ADMIN environment variable set (echo $TNS_ADMIN) -- assuming Linix/Unix, if Windows, check system environment variables
    You may TNS_ADMIN set and pointing to a tnsnames.ora that is not in the default location.
    If it fails and your tns entry is correct in the tnsnames.ora file, then you may need to look at the sqlnet.ora
    For example,
    If you have NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN set.. then you would need enter: <tnsalias>.<domain> (i.e. scott.world)
    or you may need to check if TNSNAMES is first in NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH=
    You can remove or rename the sqlnet.ora to make sure that is not an issue.
    Hope that helps. Good Luck.
    ~Steve.

  • I got the error ORA-12154 trying to connect my app but not with the SQLplus

    Hello! i need your help,
    I have a client (Win XP SP2) and i'm trying to connect to the database in the server (Windows 2003, Oracle 10G) using the SQL plus, this is ok, but i try to do it throught the application developed in Developer 6i and i cannot, i got the error: ORA-12154 TNS:could not resolve service name. I tried to solve it by setting the env. var TNS_ADMIN and i still have the same error.
    Could anyone help me?, please

    Hi,
    Check for following file TNSNAMES.ORA at location;
    C:\<Forms-directory>\NET80\ADMIN
    See, if your service name is added to your file. If not then add a new entry like;
    gsm.world =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY = tcp)(PROTOCOL = TCP)(Host = 10.0.1.22)(Port = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = gsm))
    Where:
    gsm.world = your service through which you connect to databse.
    Host = ip address of machine where oracle server is running.
    sid = name of your database
    If you already have entry of service in TNSNAMES.ora file then paste you service here as is did , so that we can check because the error you are facing is only due to service problem. Please update........

  • Error ORA-12154 trying to connect with instant client 11g / LDAP on Ubuntu

    Hello,
    I have successfully installed instant client 11.2.0.2 and sqlplus on my Ubuntu 11.04 workstation. I am able to successfully connect to DB's defined in tnsnames.ora, but when the resolution is (or should be) by LDAP, I get error
    ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    Note: while it's fine for testing, it's not a viable option to setup all the DB's defined in the OID in tnsnames.ora - I need to use LDAP.
    My setup is as follows:
    Install folder: /opt/oracle/instantclient_11_2
    TNS_ADMIN=/opt/oracle/instantclient_11_2/
    sqlnet.ora
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH=(TNSNAMES,LDAP)
    I am certain that tnsnames.ora and ldap.ora are valid, as I can connect successfully on another machine with the full client installed using the same files.
    I tried to setup tracing in sqlnet.ora as follows
    TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT = SUPPORT
    TRACE_DIRECTORY_CLIENT = /tmp
    TRACE_FILE_CLIENT = sqlnet.trc
    but not trace file gets generated in /tmp - am I doing something wrong ? (Note, I also tried to set DIAG_ADR_ENABLED=OFF as suggested by Laurenz Albe in Instant client don't work trace but that did not help)
    I checked DocID=359206.1 but I don't think that applies as I'm on 11g.
    Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance !

    Workaround
    Solution Description
    기존에 사용하던 "OFSA45" 라는 listener가 다른 이름으로 바뀌어 있었다.
    OFSA45 Listener를 다시 만들고 test하니, 잘 됨.
    Reference Documents
    -------------------

    First, don't use an ODBC connection, use OCI. Secondly you need to search what's the active home. Also change all your TNSNAMES.ORA files that you can find in your system to make they have the DB name you are trying to resolve. Then try to "tnsping" the DB from a CMD prompt.

  • Error while trying to retrieve text for error ORA-12154

    Hello,
    I try to install php 5.1.2 on a WIN2003 server and IIS6 with the OCi8 extension without success from several days.
    On my server I've a 920 oracle client and the 10.1 instant client, I copy the tnsnames.ora in the instant client's directory.
    I've declare many environnement variables :
    - NLS_LANG : AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252
    - TNS_ADMIN : E:\...\oracle\instantclient_10_1
    - ORA_NLS33 : E:\..\oracle\920\ocommon\nls\ADMIN\DATA
    With the php command line the oci_connect function correctly works : the php command line use the instant client's tnsnames.ora. I can query with success my database.
    When I try to load a web php script (the same as the php command line script) I have the following error " Error while trying to retrieve text for error ORA-12154" ( oci_connect( $user , $pass, $sid ) . The $sid variable have the value of an alias declared in the tnsnames.ora.
    If I replace the sid's alias by something like this " (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=xx.xx.xx.xx)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=xx)" in the oci_connect function, I have another error : Error while trying to retrieve text for error ORA-12705.
    A web page with the phpinfo function displays the following messages about oci8 extension : It seems to be correct.
    oci8
    OCI8 Support enabled
    Revision $Revision: 1.269.2.8 $
    Active Persistent Connections 0
    Active Connections 0
    Temporary Lob support enabled
    Collections support enabled
    Do you have any idea ? Thanks a lot

    The web server is not seeing the Oracle environment correctly. You need to set PATH to the instant client libraries. ORA_NLS33 is not used for Oracle 10g clients. Perhaps you have some library conflict with two versions of Oracle on the machine?

    In the xp administrative tools, I found that the listener is on start.
    When I try to test trough ' Net Configration Assistant' getting same error, similarly with Net Manager.
    I don't know if I am using the correct protocol in my case of standalone installation.
    Any advice/correction? it would be appreciated. I am giving all the information of TNSNAMES.ORA, LISTENER.ORA, SQLNET.ORA, which is on my machine.
    Thanks in advance.

    First of all Thanks for suggestions for solutions but still SAME PROBLEM:
    Case-1::
    I tried according to your suggestion, still SAME error !! I have also configured new DB
    with Enterprise MAnager Configuration Assistent - during DB creation same error occured.
    1) I have seen in XP service where all listener is running as well as OracleServiceORCL
    is also running.
    2) OracleOraHome90TNSListener also running with other listeners!
    Case-2::
    Dear I also delete listener and create new one and also configured Database Description
    and tried to do so but still same problem while I am TESTing it with - Net Manager /
    Net Configuration Assistant. I have also tried
    C:\TNSPING ORCL - it is giving 'ok' result
    but when I am using C:\LSNRCTL START listener - it gives me following errors.
    Service OracleOraHome90TNSListener already running.
    TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
    TNS-00530: Protocol adapter error
    32-bit Windows Error: 1056: Unknown error
    Thats the whole story....hope this time you will find easy to give solution.

  • ERROR ORA-12154 connecting to Oracle 9i

    Hi,
    I've downloaded the Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .net and when connecting to an Oracle 9i database I get error: ORA-12154... I'm new to Oracle and I know that is related to the “tnsnames.ora” file.The location of my file is on the Oracle\ora92\network\admin directory. Do I need a copy of this file to any other directory? I can still connect to the database using SQL+.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Justo

    Hi Justo,
    If ODT was installed correctly, it should have gone into a new Oracle10g Oracle home. This would mean that you need to copy your tnsnames.ora from your Oracle9 Oracle home into your Oracle10g Oracle home so that you can continue to use the same aliases from ODT.

  • PLEASE HELP!  Installation error :ORA-12154 - TNS

    Hi everyone,
    When I'm installing 9ilite and when it comes to the mobile server repository screen, it get an error message :"ORA-12154 - TNS: could not resolve service name".
    But my service name pass the test of TNSPING.
    Please help me and any suggestion is greatly apprieciated.
    Thank you very much!
    Tonie

    Check your tnsnames.ora and make sure that webtogo.world tns entry is correct. The entry should refer to the
    correct database service name.

  • Error ORA-12154 TNS:  Could not resolve the connect identifier specified

    Hi. I'm getting the above error message as I'm trying to create a connection to my oracle 10g database from visual studio 2008. (it's not an ASP.NET app, but a windows forms)
    I've installed the Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio and am following the instructions found in the "2 Day + .NET Developer’s Guide" for connecting to the database via the "Add Data Source" menu option.
    When I get to the form where I'm supposed to supply the data source name, and sign in credentials, it's failing with the above error.
    I know I'm using the right credentials but I can sign into SQL Developer using the same ID and password.
    Does this have anything to do with my SQLNET.ORA file? I read in another forum that you have to use SQLNET to connect to 10g databases...
    is this correct?
    any help would be appreciated.

    I've also followed the instructions at http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/A91202_01/901_doc/network.901/a90154/gettings.htm#483215. I just modified the existing service name, and tested it using the same credentials i'm using in vstudio and it worked with no problems.

    I found a resolution. I followed the "Oracle developer tools for visual studio FAQ". After my administrator installed the developer tools for me, i had to copy the original tns file over to the new ora home directory.
    that fixed the problem.
    I'm still having problems though getting my application to run on my client machines.
    as a test, i started a new vstudio 2008 project. (.net 2.0) I created a new data source, connected to my oracle database using odp, and then created a data grid control that has all my data from the database.
    i compile with no problems. when i copy the files to my client machine and try to run it, i get the following error:

    Pls Help. Any lead is appreciated

    Hi
    Your oracle database and forms are installed on different oracle home so when you configurate your sql net that time you are configurating only your oracle database. So for form you must be having different oracle home. you cand change thid from start/oracle inatallation products/home selecter. so change our home and run the form. and if still having problem than check for tnsnames.ora file you must be having two files and both must be having right configuration.
    thanks
