TNS will not resolve DEMO
i have a first time install, with the DEMO database. i try "sqlplus system/manager@DEMO" and TNS will not resolve. i started the appropriate listener, and it says it is listening to DEMO. i am not on a network, just using local machine. the tnsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora, and listener.ora files seem to be fine, any help?
This message says that Oracle can find the database with DNS that you have given.
With a tnsping, you can verify it.
Below, I have a problem with my listener but Oracle can resolve the DNS orcl.
C:\Documents and Settings\Nicolas>tnsping orcl

Used parameter files:
C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\NETWORK\ADMIN\sqlnet.ora
Used TNSNAMES adapter to resolve the alias
Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = ngerard)(PORT = 1521))) (CONNECT_DATA = (S
ERVER = DEDICATED) (SERVICE_NAME = orcl)))
TNS-12541: TNS:no listener
C:\Documents and Settings\Nicolas>You can see above the used parameter files :
C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\NETWORK\ADMIN\sqlnet.ora
Oracle need to know the directory where to find the file that define the TNS.
The directory is thus :
C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\NETWORK\ADMIN\
Normally, you find in this directory the file tnsnames.ora which makes the link between you DNS (ORCL) and the database.
Below a example on my computer :
ORCL =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = ngerard)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = orcl)
)What you can do to help Oracle to find this file, is to add an environment variable TNS_ADMIN with this value C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\NETWORK\ADMIN\.
Restart the Oracle BI Administration Tool and normally, you're done !
Good luck

i have personal oracle8i in d:\oracle
and d2k in d:\d2k
it connects with the SQLPlus
however with d2k when i try to connect it gives the above error
message.
does any 1 know a solution to the problem...Hello,
First of all, If you are using PO8i and D2k as a front end
on single machine,no need of specifying Connect String. You can
connect using scott, tiger. If still it is giving problem, try
this one.
Open TNSNAMES.ORA file from folder NET80/Admin in your PC
using NOTEPAD. Look there entry for myora. If it is there,Check
SID,IPAddress or remove word "World" from there. See E.g
ora816 = -- Your connect string
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS =
(COMMUNITY = tcp.world)
(PROTOCOL = TCP)
(Host = 10.0.0.3) -- IP address

(CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ora816) -- Database SID
Hope it will work...

ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified [10g XE]
Greetings
There are many topics on this issue over the internet but None of them addresses this issue properly, so I couldn't find a solution to the problem.
I installed: Oracle Database 10g Express Edition
After the installation was done, I opened SQL Command Line
and I used the command "connect" to login
I enter the username
Then I entered the password
After a couple of seconds I got the following ERROR message:
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
Screenshot of the error:
http://i35.tinypic.com/14o26g7.png
I installed this version of Oracle on both Windows XP 32 bit and Windows 7 32 bit and I get the same error message when it tries to connect.
Why doesn't Oracle work right after the installation?
Are there any further steps that need to be done in order to make this work? If so I would really appreciate any step by step help, I've been stuck trying to find a solution for days.

I wento to CMD, then I entered sqlplus / as sysdba and that just opened the SQL*Plus program in CMD (SQL>)
But nevertheless I still need to login with a user name and password which and I tried and I got the same error message.
>
We're making progress, you'll be logging in soon....
Get into SQL*Plus with the command I gave you, now type this:
alter user <theusernameyouwant> identified by abc123;followed by (still in SQL*Plus):
connectafter you type "connect", SQL*Plus will ask you for a user name and password. Use the same user name and password you used in the alter command.

MSDAORA,IIS,ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name
Hi All,
I have a Web Service that coded in VS2008, using ORACLE DB(9i).
At a time the application working fine and I can access and do everything with database.
Some other time database server is down for scheduled maintenance. If I try to run the application at this point of time it will raise err "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name".
When i reset iis it start to work fine for a while. Then same problem occurs again.
My connection string is connectionString="provider=MSDAORA.1;data source=***;user id=***;password=***;"
is there any solution?
i tried that;
If theire is multiple copies of OCIW32.dll you have to make sure that there is only one copy of OCIW32.dll which should be in /Bin folder of the oracle home folder.
Add the IUSR_machine name account and the IWAM_machine name account to the Oracle home folder. Give both accounts full control.
Create empty file tnsnames.ora in same directory as aspnet_wp.exe,Hi,
The issue doesnt make much sense on the surface at least. 12154 means the client couldnt figure out what you were referring to with your Data Source= entry. If the database was taken down, I'd expect an "oracle not available" or some other sort of error, as the client should have still be able to resolve the entry at least, even if the database wasnt up at the time.
What do you mean by "When i reset iis it start to work fine for a while. Then same problem occurs again."? The same problem meaning you get 12154 when you take the database down? Or you get 12154 without a db restart?
Are you using TNSNames.ora for client naming resolution, or something else (ldap, for example)?

ORA -ERR :Tns could not resolve service name
Hi,
I am tring to get into sql plus. As the oracle is pre installed and as donot know the system password, I am tring to login as Scott/tiger and host string as 'ORCL'.
I am getting the following error.
ORA-12154 :
Tns could not resolve service name
Is there any way to find the Host string name through any of the installation files.
Please suggest.
BadrinathHi,
Open the tns file ( available at oracle_home/network/admin/tnsnames.ora). I do not know what your oracle_home name is. Usually it is oracle/ora81/ under c: or D: or where ever you installed Oracle. Go thru the file. You will find the service name. Use that while logging. If you want to login to ORCL, it has to be there in tns files name otherwise Oracle cvan not resolve the name.
Good luck

Thanks,
RagHello,
Make sure that the service which you have specified in jdbc for making connection with oracle, exists in TNSNAMES.ORA file. You will find this file at different locations in 8i and above. So, better search for it. And add you service name in it. Example services is given in this file itself. So, take help from them. -
TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified

I get the error: "TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified " from my ASP pages and "Warning: oci_connect() [function.oci-connect]: Error while

I am trying to access these pages from the same server as the database.
I manage to connect to the database homepage, but only after I manually stop and start the database after a restart (why?).
I have been reading forums and I have been googling for days. I think this is what you guys need to know to be able to help me.

Sorry for the long post....

NorwayGreat post - it has nearly everything needed for diagnosis. Well done.
The database is working, and the listener is listening. The successful tnsping to XE shows me that the client subsystem (at least in the oraclexe) path is set up correctly.
However, two other non-oracle clients (ASP and PHP) cannot see the definition for the XE server. This suggests to me that something is pointing them to another Oracle client software set up
I note that you have C:\instantclient_10_2 in your path - so presumably you had/have installed Instant Client on this machine as well ?
Given that you are on the server box, I don't think you need the Instant Client set up. It's possible that this is what is misdirecting the other clients you are suing. Try taking this out of your path.
If that doesn't work, can you provide the output of a SET command issued from the command line. -
Discoverer Plus Error: ORA-12154:TNS:could not resolve the
Hi,
I’m running the Discoverer report in Discoverer Plus and getting the below error, but when the same report ran in Desktop completes successfully and the SQL from the report is running without error in SQL nav.
Database Error - ORA-12154:TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
Thanks in Advance.
SunilHi Sunil,
Did you test the direct method I posted above? That will bypass the tnsnames.ora file. If it connects fine that way, then you likely have a configuration issue with your sqlnet.ora and/or tnsnames.ora
You can test with:
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/tnsping <tnsalias>
If it is successful, then check if you have the TNS_ADMIN environment variable set (echo $TNS_ADMIN) -- assuming Linix/Unix, if Windows, check system environment variables
You may TNS_ADMIN set and pointing to a tnsnames.ora that is not in the default location.
If it fails and your tns entry is correct in the tnsnames.ora file, then you may need to look at the sqlnet.ora
For example,
If you have NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN set.. then you would need enter: <tnsalias>.<domain> (i.e. scott.world)
or you may need to check if TNSNAMES is first in NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH=
You can remove or rename the sqlnet.ora to make sure that is not an issue.
Hope that helps. Good Luck.

the conection works fine on our old XP OS....
any idea what i have to do to get this to run on Windows 7
thanksHi,
1) Check the tnsnames.ora file you are using, verify that it is accessible.
Eg: On Unix:
- Check if you have a $HOME/.tnsnames.ora file - This will be
used in addition to 'tnsnames.ora'.
- Check TNS_ADMIN is set in your environment.
- There is a readable tnsnames.ora file in $TNS_ADMIN
2) Ensure that the tnsnames.ora file contains a line of the form
'alias=(...)' for the alias you are specifying.
Aliases are NOT case sensitive.
3) Make sure that there are no mismatched parentheses in the
tnsnames.ora file.
4) Even if TNS_ADMIN is set SQL*Net looks in other locations for
configuration files. Check the default directories for old (or bad)
copies of TNS_NAMES.ORA. Eg: /etc, /var/opt/oracle,
$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
5) Check the default domain name being used, and the path used to
locate aliases, in the SQLNET.ORA file.
The default domain is specified in the NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN
parameter - this is appended to the alias specified in the
connect string if there is no domain given.
Eg: If NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN=mydom.uk
and a connect to "scott/tiger@mydb" is requested
SQL*Net will look for the alias "mydb.mydom.uk"
If NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH is also specified this determines where
SQL*Net looks for the alias expansion.
6) If none of these show an error enable client side tracing
at level 16 and see what has been written to the client trace
file. There list of aliases in the trace file under the heading
'TNS.NAMES.ORA TABLE HAS THE FOLLOWING CONTENTS'.
7) If ORA-12154 is returned when selecting over a database link from a
client check that the alias in the link can be resolved in the
tnsnames.ora file ON THE SERVER.
8) If you are connecting from a login dialog box, verify that you are
not placing an "@" symbol before your connect net service name.
9) When going from Windows to Linux/Unix platforms,
you can see <carriage return> <new line> characters at the
end of each line instead of <new line> <new line>. Be sure you
use ascii mode when ftp'ing this between Windows and Linux/Unix.

ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified (sqlplus)
Hi All,
I don't know if this has ever been posted, but since I've spent a week figuring it out (no joke, a week), I thought I would post it so that no one else has to waste this much time.
"ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" from what I've seen on this site is a major problem for a lot of people, but I did not find a reference to my specfic problem.
FYI--
My Database is called "ordidm"
userID: SYSMAN
password: p@ssw0rd
My specific issue was the following:
I can....
- Connect to the database via the client "admin assstant" GUI in Windows while supplying the userID and password using the "Database Authentication".
- Connect via sqlplus as "/as sysdba"
- "tnsping oraidm" passes works just fine.
I CANNOT....
- connect to oraidm at the dos prompt by using sqlplus, regardless of whether or not I supply all the user authentiocation information and db name on one line, or...if I just type "sqlplus" at the command prompt and then enter the userID and password when prompted. Every time I get the "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" error message.
Ready for this?? (some may have guessed this already) The problem is the "@" in my password. After looking closely at the trace logs, I noticed that one of the entries was...
[09-MAR-2009 08:23:12:921] nnftrne: Original name: ssw0rd
Remember that the format for connecting on one line at the dos prompt is
C:/> sqlplus SYSMAN/p@ssw0rd oraidm
or you can do the following...
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.WIN2K3>sqlplus
SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on Mon Mar 9 09:08:50 2009
Copyright (c) 1982, 2005, Oracle. All rights reserved.
Enter user-name: scott
Enter password:
Connected to:
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
With the Partitioning, OLAP and Data Mining options
SQL>
(BTW-I just started using the "scott" ID because from what I understand, changing the SYSMAN userID password is kind of a pain. Figured just using "scott" ID would be easier to test)
So of course what it's doing is counting everything after the first "@" as the database name...which of course it can't find in the tnsnames.ora file. Also, contrary to some other posts I found here and there, enclosing the userID and/or passowrd in quotes does not do any good. Apparently, even when using the 2nd method...in the background, the end result is it must pass the whole thing as one long string much like in the 1st method (as you will get the same truncated "Original Name" of "ssw0rd" in the log)
So...the question is, why does Oracle even allow "@" in the password if it will become an issue with sqlplus??? Also, if you can't (or shouldn't) use it, why isn't it documented somewhere? At the least I would expect the installer to at least warn you ahead of time that an "@" is not suggested. I don't remember it being there. Maybe it's just me and I'm just missing this info somewhere
I sincerely hope this saves someone else a week of their life. ;-)

Passwords can be from 1 to 30 characters.
The first character in an Oracle password must be a letter.
Only letters, numbers, and the symbols “#”, “_” and “$” are acceptable in a password.
And password must not be a reserved word (look into v$reserved_words).
And as You can see sysman password containt "@" - this is not allowed.

but in Your case @symbol already is in password.
Here can be used a small trick
sqlplus sysman/"p@ssw0rd"@oraid
>
or you can do the following...
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.WIN2K3>sqlplus
SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on Mon Mar 9 09:08:50 2009

Maybe it's just me and I'm just missing this info somewhereActually Oracle is not allowing this if You will just try to
alter user scott identidified by p@ssword
You will get error message (ORA-00922: missing or invalid option), but You can
alter user scott identified by "p@ssword" - and that will work.
These double quotes will allow to overide Oracle restrictions. -
"Database Log In Failed - TNS could not resolve service name"
Hello.
I have an installation of Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2) for Microsoft Windows (32-Bit) using WinXP Pro on my computer.
I have also installed the compantion CD on the same machine (In a separate home directory) so that I can use PL/SQL.
I have searched through the forum threads but haven't found any similar problem. The solutions that fixed other peoples problem don't seem to be applicable to mine.
I have created a user 'antagning' and some tables and also some PL/SQL procedures that compile fine. When I request
http://localhost:7777/pls/projekt/firsttest
(firsttest is the procedure. doesn't take any params)
I get the famous
Database Log In Failed
TNS could not resolve service name
Verify that the TNS name in the connectstring
entry of the DAD for this URL is valid.
This is my DAD file:
<location /pls/projekt>
SetHandler pls_handler
PlsqlDatabaseUsername antagning
PlsqlDatabasePassword antagning
PlsqlDatabaseConnectString ORCL
PlsqlAuthenticationMode Basic
PlsqlErrorStyle DebugStyle
</location>
and my tnsnames.ora looks like: (there is only one on the machine so there is no conflicting setups I think)
ORCL =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST =
localhost)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = ORCL)
EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SID = PLSExtProc)
(PRESENTATION = RO)
finally, this is my sqlnet.ora:
# sqlnet.ora Network Configuration File: c:\oracle10g\network\admin\sqlnet.ora
# Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
# This file is actually generated by netca. But if customers choose to
# install "Software Only", this file wont exist and without the native
# authentication, they will not be able to connect to the database on NT.
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
I haven't set any default domain because the database runs on my local computer and not on a microsoft server in a domain. Is that correctly concluded?
I get an OK message when I ping my TNS with "tnsping orcl" (Maybe that information is not relevant in the context)
My webserver is started and is running fine (I think). If I request:
http://localhost:7777/pls/projekt (without any procedure name)
I get the message that no procedure is specified to run so I get some sort of answer from the webserver, so far so right.
When I log in using sqlplus with my own created user account I have to leave the database field empty or the login will fail. If I specify the field with the string orcl
the login will fail. Does that imply that something is not quite right? Maybe that hasn't got anything to do with the failure message.
/FredrikHas anyone resolved the problems with using TNSFormat?
As is, I want to move to a shared server setup and to do that I want to use TNSFormat and point to a tns entry which is setup for IPC+Shared connection.
But the Oracle Home that has the Oracle HTTP Server (from the companion CD) does not have SQL*net installed and does not seem to understand TNS.
I have TNS_ADMIN setup, I have ORACLE_HOME_LISTENER poiting to the DB Home.
for the OHS home, using "sqlplus login/pw@ipcshared" works, but "tnsping ipcshared" does not, since tnsping does not exist in the OHS home.
I cannot install SQL*Net from the CD1, since it requires a dedicated/new home and does not want to install in the OHS Home.
The only format that works in a dedicated OHS Home setup is ServiceNameFormat.
Any help or input would be very helpful.
Regards
ps. This is a redhat linux setup.

"TNS could not resolve service name" in Discoverer4i
Hi All,
I just installed the older version Discoverer 4i and pasted the TNSNAMES in the corresponding folders. I can login via disco viewer but not in Discoverer Desktop.
When login through Discoverer Desktop it throughs an error like 'TNS could not resolve the service name' but eventhough I have pasted the TNSNAMES.
Please suggest me is there any change will do in Windows Registry? and after installed the Disco4i I have installed the Disco10g which is working perfectly.
Please suggest and help me what should I do.
Thanks,
KamalHi Akshay Salkar,
Find the file tnsname.ora file there you modify the following

(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = [IP ADDRESS OF YOUR
SYSTEM] )(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = myora)

Ora-12541 ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
I am having trouble obtaining an ODBC connection from a client XE to a server XE. ora-12541 ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
I am new to Oracle.
I have oracle client XE running on my XP pro box.
I have oracle server XE running on an XP pro box on the LAN.
I am trying to connect to the oracle database using ODBC from my client box.
I can logon to the oracle server box through HTTP.
I can logon to the oracle server box by using a connection string in "Command Line SQL" from my client computer. I can then run queries on my client computer. (select * from global_name)
I cannot setup an ODBC connection in windows which will connect to the oracle server box from my client box. (I have no trouble connecting to MSSQL databases).
I can ping my server by hostname or ip address. Both ok.
I can run tnsping XE on the server box and it works. I believe this tells me my server listener is working.
I cannot run tnsping on my client box as it is not included in the download for Client XE.
Windows firewall is turned off on both machines.
I have been reading all over the web for and all attempts fail. Most all help says use Oracle Net Manager or some such tool. They then say go to start\programs\oracle….etc. There is no type program included on the server or the client software. I would like to know here I can download it.
XEClint\Bin is the firs entry in my PATH. The tnsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora, and listner.ora files are there. I have been to http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/xe/files/install.102/b25143/toc.htm several times. My tnsnames.ora are identical to the ones in the example except for the host =.
I have 3 tnsnames.ora files on my computer:
Directory of c:\
04/03/2008 11:43 AM 635 tnsnames.ORA
Directory of c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Net
work
04/03/2008 11:43 AM 635 tnsnames.ORA
1 File(s) 635 bytes
Directory of c:\XEClient\bin
04/03/2008 11:43 AM 635 tnsnames.ORA
1 File(s) 635 bytes
They are all identical.
When I ran lsnrctl status on the server the results were the same as found in other articles in the web site. Default service XE
I have the Oracle in XE Client driver in my windows ODBC driver list of the client box. And other Oracle drivers.
It appears I am lost.
Any help would be appreciated.
RandyI cannot setup an ODBC connection in windows which will connect to the oracle server
box from my client box. (I have no trouble connecting to MSSQL databases). How you tryed to do that?
On which step you have problems? -

When using a dblink, the database with the link is acting as a client to the remote database ... exactly like sqlplus running on the db server.
