TNSNAMES.ora in Linux OS

I have installed oracle database using ./dbca in Linux.
When I am connecting to oracle..
1. sys as sysdba
ORA-12162:TNS:net service name is incorrectly specified
2. sys@soni as sysdba
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
There is not any TNSNAMES.ora file in NETWORK folder...
Can anybody tell me to solve this issue in Linux? ( I am new in Linux OS)

( I am new in Linux OS)Hi,this error occur because *"soni"* entry(point) does not exits in tnsnames.ora file, this file must be located $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/ location ,if does not exits then you can create this file manually or using netmanager.
1.Create tnsnames.ora file and add following lines(for example)
soni =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 172.16.10.201)(PORT = 1531))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = soni)
2.Or try following:(for example)
export ORACLE_HOME=/orahome/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1;
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/./netmgrthen create this file using netmgr

  • Connecting to a database that's not in tnsnames.ora

    Hi there,
I'm using Oracle 8.1.6/Apache/PHP & would like to be able to connect to a database that's not listed in the local tnsnames.ora (by local, i mean the machine that's serving the web pages).
    Is this possible?
    Thanks!

I'm not sure that you can use this in PHP/Apache, but when I used Oracle Enterprise Manager (which isn't ported to Linux so I had to use a different machine (NT/Solaris)) I used the format ipaddress:port:SID (ex.: 192.168.0.5:1521:cddata), where ipaddress is the address of your machine, port is the port number of the listener on the database (defulat is 1521) and SID is the SID of the database you want to access.
    I hope this helps.

  • ORA-12545 error after changing the host name as IP address in Tnsnames.ora

    HI,
I tried to connect PHP and oracle in Red Hat linux. I got error ORA-12545 after changing the host name as IPAddress in Tnsnames.ora file. In sqlnet.ora file also i have entry for tnsnames in Directory_Path. I struggled so much but i couldnt solve that. Please give me ur valuable suggestions....

12545, 00000, "Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
// *Cause: The address specified is not valid, or the program being
// connected to does not exist.
// *Action: Ensure the ADDRESS parameters have been entered correctly; the
// most likely incorrect parameter is the node name. Ensure that the
// executable for the server exists (perhaps "oracle" is missing.)
// If the protocol is TCP/IP, edit the TNSNAMES.ORA file to change the
// host name to a numeric IP address and try again.
Seems you specified wrong IP address.

  • Oracle 8i clients, inconsistent handling of tnsnames.ora (ORA-06401 gotcha)

This is more of a bug report / oddity declaration than a real problem, though it was a pain in the butt to nail down. I post it here for the benefit of anyone else who may run into it down the road.
Using the linux sqlplus client, I kept getting consistent failures connecting to one of a dozen db's, but tests with the (java) netasst client worked fine. After various debugging of other potential causes, it came down to strace'ing the sqlplus client, and noting that it was attempting to connect to the wrong host, despite what was specified on the command line.
What we identified as the most probable cause:
The routines that load and parse the tnsnames.ora file differ between the linux and java clients, with the java client being more tolerant/robust. The tnsnames.ora file I'd been supplied with had come from a fellow user's Win32 machine, and had been edited there, which probably included a couple ^M's or other non-visible characters within the file.
The solution (at least, what I did):
Load the tnsnames.ora file with netasst, and save it again with netasst. Netasst wrote the file in a manner that sqlplus could read accurately, and I got to go have a beer.

    Hi Fredrik,
You r right. But I have its entry in tnsnames.ora file. The entry looks like this -
    My_Service_Name.world =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS =
    (COMMUNITY = tcp.world)
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Server = Computer_Name_of_Server_having_Ora8i)
    (Host = IP_Add_of_Server_having_Ora8i)
    (Port = 1521)
    (Pipe = ORAPIPE)
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORCL)
The same entry exists in the tnsnames.ora file on the local PCs (same office where the Oracle 8i Server is present) at Site 1 and these PCs connect the server without any problem.
    Thanks

  • SQL Developer not only reading tnsnames.ora

    Hello,
I have found a very odd behaviour in SQL Developer 1.2 (running on Windows 2000):
I have set TNS_ADMIN to point to a directory on a network drive residing on a Linux host. In this directory there were many backup files of tnsnames.ora created over time whose names followed the pattern tnsnames.ora.<timestamp> or tnsnames.bak or something similar. In SQL Developer in the "New database connection" dialog many TNS-entries showed up multiple times in the "Network alias" listbox. Only after removing all those backup files from the directory the behaviour of SQL Developer was correct and every entry only showed up once. I also found out that even when I moved the backup files to a new directory "tnsnames.bak" under the directory which TNS_ADMIN points to the entries showed up multiple times. After I renamed this directory to bak.tnsnames the behaviour was again correct. In my opinion SQL Developer should only read the file called tnsnames.ora and ignore all other files or directories with similar names.
    Kind regards,
    Christof Breker

    Various users reported this before.
Maybe others use multiple files, but at least there should be the option to read just this one.
    Regards,
    Kristof

  • Getting sqlplus to read tnsnames.ora

I have installed the instant client (version 11_1) on an Ubuntu box (9.04)
I have a tnsnames.ora file I would like to use with sqlplus.
What do I need to do to configure to get sqlplus to use my tnsnames.ora file?
When I strace the sqlplus process, I see that it tries accessing tnsnav.ora (in several locations)
but never tnsnames.ora. I have placed a copy of the tnsnames.ora file in /etc, but sqlplus is not
checking for a tnsnames.ora file in any directory.
    I've tried putting:
    network.directory_path TNSNAMES
in my ~/.sqlnet.ora file. Sqlplus is reading that file, but that had no effect.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
The default installation of tnsnames.ora is in:
    ${ORACLE_HOME}/network/adminAn example of an entrie:
    XE =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <host_name or IP>)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVER = DEDICATED)
          (SERVICE_NAME = <SID>)
)Also you should check [Oracle® Database Installation Guide 11g Release 1 (11.1) for Linux|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/install.111/b32002/toc.htm]

  • ASM instance not shown in tnsnames.ora

    Hi,
Currently I have an Oracle 11g database on linux with ASM installed, or at least that's what I can tell from querying v$logfile and v$datafile views. But in my tnsnames.ora and listner.ora I only see the db instance with no ASM instance. If I goto $ORACLE_BASE/admin, I see ASM and orcl. But under $ORACLE_BASE/admin/+ASM/pfile, I see no files.
This is a vm image by the way. The database is running fine as far as i can tell. My question is why there is no ASM entries in the above files?
    Thanks for the help.

ASM instance is not used by applications users. It is used by Oracle which can see it, so you do not need any entry in tnsnames.ora for ASM instance. Also ASM instance usage init.ora file from $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory, so you do not see any file in admin/pfile directory.

  • Figuring out location of tnsnames.ora and listener.ora file.

    Hello.
Is there a way to figure out what my oracle instance is reading in terms of tnsnames.ora and/or listener.ora file? According to the 10g docs, they can be found in a few places:
    1. $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
    2. $TNS_ADMIN
    3. in a global configuration directory, on solaris it is /var/opt/oracle.
How would I know which one my instance/lsnrctl is reading, aside from checking out differences in behavior?
Plus, how would I change where to look for the file?
    thanks.

On Solaris you can use 'truss' on the binary and grep for all the open() calls to see exactly which files are being used or tested for in order. I had an issue once where a tnsnames.ora was being used and it turned out to be $HOME/.tnsnames.ora (IIRC). There are similar calls under Linux (strace).

  • Can't find tnsnames.ora

    Hi,
I install Instant Client on Linux using rpm. I need to edit the tnsnames.ora, but I can't find it.
Can I copy one instance of tnsnames.ora and set TNS_ADMIN=<the path of tnsname.ora directory> as and enviornment variable on your client machine?
    Thank you

No tnsnames.ora is included with Instant Client, you have to create (or copy, as you do) your own.
You did the right thing, TNS_ADMIN must point to the directory containing tnsnames.ora.
If you have an sqlnet.ora file, it must be in the same directory.
    Yours,
    Laurenz Albe

  • Best Practices: tnsnames.ora and listener.ora

I would like to know if it is better to use the public ip / public hostname or the virtual ip / virtual hostname in the tnsnames.ora and listener.ora files on the servers and clients. I have seen examples where the vip is used for all areas, and I have seen examples where the public has been used in all areas. And of course even some examples where both are used. It makes more sense to me to use the vip, as that is what is failed over But what is the public ip used for if all connections are made to the vip?
    Thanks

    Database version: 10.2.0.4

So if I was to create a tnsnames files on the servers, would I use the vip information as the host or the public information?
Would I use the same tnsnames files for the clients?
Would I use the vip or public address in the listener files?

I am in the need to access another Oracle database on Windows NT

    null

You are missing one line. The top part of your entry should be:
    : stone.world =
    : (DESCRIPTION =
    : (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS =
    : (COMMUNITY = tcp.world)
The line without the colon is the one you are missing.

  • Setting the listener and tnsnames.ora

    Hi,
I have two node cluster database 10.2.0.4 on Linux. Someone messed up with the tnsnames file and also the local, remote listener setting are gone during the switchover.
Now I just want to replace the new tns entries, listener entries, set the local/remote listener and then register the local/remote listener. During these changes it will not affect the applications, but just want to know is there any specific steps which I have to keep in mind.
    Thank you.

    Hi
Did you not back them up? :-)
The answer to your question is yes. Basically, you need your listener referenced in the listener.ora for each node, then you need to reference those listeners in your tnsnames.ora - one for your local listener and another for your remote listener. A good starting point will be what you've got in your LOCAL_LISTENER and REMOTE_LISTENER parameter - that will show the names of the entries you need to create in the tnsnames.ora. I have all entries in the listener.ora and tnsnames.ora on both nodes just for simplicity but you don't have to do that.
Any idea what port you used for your listener? The default 1521?
A couple of examples from my test system:
listener.ora (we use port 1550 by the way):
    LISTENER_DEVDB_NODE1 =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1-vip)(PORT = 1550)(IP = FIRST))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1)(PORT = 1550)(IP = FIRST))
    tnsnames.ora
    LISTENER_DEVDB_NODE1 =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1-vip)(PORT = 1550)(IP = FIRST))
    LISTENER_DEVDB_NODE2 =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node2-vip)(PORT = 1550)(IP = FIRST))
    LISTENERS_DEVDB =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1-vip)(PORT = 1550)(IP = FIRST))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node2-vip)(PORT = 1550)(IP = FIRST))
So our local listener is LISTENER_DEVDB_NODEn for each and REMOTE_LISTENER is LISTENERS_DEVDB on each node.
Hope that helps. Any further questions let me know....
    cheers,
    Mark
