To Pointbase or Not To Pointbase

Hi,
Wondering what is the standard practice followed - regarding use of database server for local development enviornment.
WLI comes with pointbase server which looks sufficient to me.
Does anyone used it for their development?
Have you faced any problem while migrating it to Oracle server later on?
Would appreciate if you guys can share you experience with me.
Thanks,
Shiv

Just a few comments:
- The Pointbase license shipped with WL* products is only for evaluation - not for development
- Pointbase does not support XA, so you cannot access a second database in a business process, if this does also not support XA (only one datasource can fake XA)
- If you use Pointbase only for the WLI tables and not for app specific one there should not be any big issues moving to Oracle later

  • Servlets Not Working with PointBase Database

    Hello All,
Background (This is more of a PointBase Question): I am developing a web application and am attempting to integrate a PointBase database with the app to capture my data.
Issue: While attempting to start and populate my database, I receive an error which reads (Class Not Found: JBDC driver com.pointbase.jdbc.jdbcUniversalDriver could not be loaded)

Yeah. Millions of Java programmers have had the problem where something isn't in their classpath, and gone on to resolve it. In fact it's a rare Java programmer who hasn't had that problem.
Perhaps there's a conflict between this statement:"I have the pbclient.jar file in the tomcat\common\lib directory."And this configuration option:classpath="${pointbase.home}/lib/pbclient.jar"

  • Pointbase database not found

I installed j2ee sdk 1.4 in my system. But the pointbase did not come with it.
Can anyone help me out in this.
    Thanks in advance

I wouldn't bother with it. Use some other "free" db that doesn't have the size restriction (JavaDB, Derby, MySQL, PostGreSQL, MS SQL Express, Oracle Lite (is that the right name?, I can't remember.), SQLLite, etc.). You can still follow the tutorial, you simply need to change the connection Strings. As I said, you'd only get a demo/training version anyway, and that would only allows you 5MB storage space.

  • Does Weblogic has embedded database(not PointBase eval version)

I have developed an application that uses a database. Currently I deployed this on Websphere that has Cloudscape embedded database.
Now we are trying to deploy it on Weblogic. I want to know that does Weblogic provide any embedded database out-of-the-box. I know it comes with PointBase eval version to demonstrate its samples. But can we use/ship this eval version database for commercial product?

  • Pointbase : How can I create a stored procedure with Pointbase database?

    Hello,
Excuse me for my english, I'm not anglophone. I try to create a stored procedure.
This is my file SampleExternalMethods.java :
      import java.sql.*;    //import com.pointbase.jdbc.jdbcInOutDoubleWrapper;          public class SampleExternalMethods    {      // A connection object to allow database callback      static Connection conn = null;      static Statement l_stmt;      static Statement m_stmt;      static CallableStatement m_callStmt = null;      static ResultSet l_rs = null;          public static void main(String[] args)      {        try        {          String url = "jdbc:pointbase:server://localhost/pointbaseDB";          String username = "PBPUBLIC";          String password = "PBPUBLIC";          conn = DriverManager.getConnection(url, username, password);          doCreateProcedure();          doInvokeProcedure();        } catch (SQLException e) {          e.printStackTrace();        } finally {          if (m_stmt != null) {            try {              m_stmt.close();            } catch (Exception e) {              e.printStackTrace();            }          }          if (m_callStmt != null) {            try {              m_callStmt.close();            } catch (Exception e) {              e.printStackTrace();            }          }          if (conn != null) {            try {              conn.close();            } catch (Exception e) {              e.printStackTrace();            }          }        }      }                  public static void getCountry(String Iso_Code)      {        try        {          // Query the database for the country iso code          l_stmt = conn.createStatement();          l_rs = l_stmt.executeQuery( "SELECT * FROM countries"          + " WHERE country_iso_code ='" + Iso_Code + "'");          //Affichage du résultat de la requête          l_rs.next();          System.out.print(l_rs.getString(1) + " - ");          System.out.print(l_rs.getString(2) + " - ");          System.out.println(l_rs.getString(3));          // Close the result set          l_rs.close();        } catch (SQLException e) {          e.printStackTrace();        } finally {          if (l_rs != null) {            try {              l_rs.close();            } catch (Exception e) {              e.printStackTrace();            }          }          if (l_stmt != null) {            try {              l_stmt.close();            } catch (Exception e) {              e.printStackTrace();            }          }        }      }            public static void doCreateProcedure() throws SQLException {        // SQL statement to create a stored procedure        String SQL_CREATE_PROC = "CREATE PROCEDURE getCountry(IN P1 VARCHAR(30))"        + " LANGUAGE JAVA"        + " SPECIFIC getCountry"        + " NO SQL"        + " EXTERNAL NAME \"SampleExternalMethods::getCountry\""        + " PARAMETER STYLE SQL";        // Create a SQL statement        m_stmt = conn.createStatement();        // Execute the SQL        m_stmt.executeUpdate(SQL_CREATE_PROC);        // Close the statement        //m_stmt.close();      }          public static void doInvokeProcedure() throws SQLException {        // Create SQL to invoke stored procedures        String SQL_USE_PROC = "{ call getCountry(?) }";        // Create a callable statement with three binding parameters        m_callStmt = conn.prepareCall(SQL_USE_PROC);        m_callStmt.setString(1, "CA");        m_callStmt.executeQuery();        // Close the callable statement        //m_callStmt.close();      }    }
Afterwards, I have read this note in a Pointbase document:
To invoke the dateConvert external Java method from a stored function, you must use the
CREATE FUNCTION statement. The dateConvert external Java method is called from the
    class, SampleExternalMethods.
In order for the database to access this external Java method, the class SampleExternalMethods
must be included in the database CLASSPATH. For PointBase Embedded - Server Option, it
must be in the Server CLASSPATH, but not in the Client CLASSPATH.
If PointBase Server is run with the Java Security Manager, in the java policy file grant
’com.pointbase.sp.spPermission’ to the class that implements the external Java method.
An "spPermission" consists of a class name with no action. The class name is a name of a class
that could be used in creating a Stored Procedure in PointBase. The naming convention follows
the hierarchical property naming convention and that is supported by
"java.security.BasicPermission". An asterisk may appear by itself, or if immediately preceded
by ".", may appear at the end of the name, to signify a wildcard match. The name cannot
    contain any white spaces.
I'm not sure, but I suppose that I must include the class SampleExternalMethods in a .jar file.
The database CLASSPATH could be : C:\Sun\AppServer\pointbase\lib\
These my files in this database CLASSPATH:
    pbclient.jar
    pbembedded.jar
    pbtools.jar
    pbupgrade.jar
I have tryed to include the class SampleExternalMethods in pbclient.jar and pbembedded.jar with this command:
    jar -uf pbembedded.jar SampleExternalMethods
    Afterwards I do that,
    1) Start Pointbase
    2) Configuration of classpath
    set classpath=C:\Sun\AppServer\pointbase\lib\pbclient.jar
    set classpath=%classpath%;D:\J2EE\Ch07Code\Ch07_06
I precise that my file SampleExternalMethods is into D:\J2EE\Ch07Code\Ch07_06\Ch07.
    Then, I run the program:
    D:\J2EE\Ch07Code\Ch07_06>java -Djdbc.drivers=com.pointbase.jdbc.jdbcUniversalDriver Ch07.SampleExternalMethods
But I have an error message:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Ch07.SampleExternalMethods (wrong name: SampleExternalMethods)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass0(Native Method)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.DefineClass(ClassLoader.java:539)
The problem, I suppose, comes from that the class SampleExternalMethods
must be included in the database CLASSPATH, but there is a pbserver.jar with pointbase normally, but I didn't find it. That's why I use pbembedded.jar or pbclient.jar in order to include the class SampleExternalMethods. May be I must start from C:\Sun\AppServer\pointbase\lib\ instead of D:\J2EE\Ch07Code\Ch07_06\Ch07?
    Please, can somebody helps me?
    Thank you in advance.
    cagou!

You should repost this in the SJS Application Server Forum, since this is the WebServer Fourm :)
However, by looking at your problem I suggest you look into the sample documentation to see the parameters that you need to provide to the connection pool.
Also I suggest than when you respost the problem in the AppServer forum you include your connection-pool/jdbc-resource declarations from server.xml

well this is certainly a configuration issue. can you connect to and access the database from a client tool? i'd try that just to make sure the database is alive and well. then i'd check the dbName or URL to make sure you are pointing to the right place. and forgive me for asking the simple questions, but did you create the database? did you start the database?
also, i see a lot of people are accessing databases in JSP's these days. maybe i'm old school or something, but everywhere i've worked you'd be shot for doing it. is it just me? or is this a just-for-fun type of project

  • Why don't I have Pointbase?

I am totally new to Java.
I downloaded and installed JDK1.6.0_14, J2EE 5.0, GlassFish, MySql, Netbeans 6.5.1, the whole package.
Then I downloaded all the samples.
I opened up the customer-cmp-ear sample in Netbeans and tried to run it.
This error appeared: Internal Exception: java.sql.SQLException: Error in allocating a connection. Cause: Connection could not be allocated because: The connection was refused because the database sun-appserv-samples was not found.
The help screen said that sun-appserv-samples is in Pointbase, but Pointbase IS NOT in my Sun\AppServer folder.
The help screen also says: When you install the Sun Java System Application Server 8.1, the Pointbase database JDBC drivers are installed and the Pointbase Database Server is installed into the Sun/AppServer/pointbase directory.
I don't know what App Server 8.1 is, and I don't know if it interferes with the GlassFish server.
I WANT POINTBASE SO I CAN RUN AND STUDY MY SAMPLES. What do I do now?

"would suggest starting with something as simple as installing the JDK, compiling and running some simple applications and then growing from there."
I am simply trying to run a sample application provided by Sun.
"1) get into library and XML configuration hell and not know anything about how to fix it, nor where to find the proper information to help you"
That's why I'm on this forum.
"2) get an incredible amount of vague error messages that you will not know how to interpret or fix "
    I fix many myself.
"4) at the end of the week you will blame it all on Java and you will switch to .NET, where your problems will start all over again"
False assumption.  I already program in.NET at work.  Also, I will never blame Java for my shortcomings.  When I see job ads for system achitects with all kinds of Java requirements, I know it is a powerful language that is respected by many professionals.  I will learn it one way or another.
"I hope for you it will be different, but I can see the frustration has already kicked in, so probably not. "
Another false assumption.  My frustration, after reading many threads here, is with the people who have 2000+ posts who try to belittle and mess with people instead of simply answering a simple question.  Being a forum poster on various sports, political and entertainment forums, I'm an expert at reading between the lines at who I'm talking to.  You and the guy with 9000 posts shouldn't even be hanging out on the New To Java thread if you're not here to answer newbie questions.  Don't ruin a beautiful website provided my Sun.  There are waaaaaay too many mindless, inane posts clogging up this forum.
Now, can SOMEONE ELSE step forward and answer my questions?  Can an INDIAN GUY answer my questions?  The INDIAN GUYS are the smartest and most straight-up people I have ever worked with.

  • Missing pointbase folder in my java sdk install

    Hello
    I downloaded j2ee v1.4.
    I set the environment variables correctly(those JAVA_HOME, JAVA_EE, %PB_TOOLS%, etc.)
    i tried asadmin start-domain domain1 and it's all ok.
but when i run into command prompt: %PB_TOOLS%\startserver
i got that the path cannot be found. i think the problem it's from this PointBase database. where i can found it and where should i install? then the environment variable hou should i change it and where? Thanks
and in the folder C:\Sun\AppServer i did not have a pointbase folder

    Ok, I fingered it out.
Its the whacky config.xml file on the eclipse side.
On the flex plugin side, it looks fine. so I just copied if from the flex plugin dir to the eclise plugin directory.
    The common point is: com.adobe.flexbuilder.flex_xxx/config.xml
It appears the Adobe's install facility is slightly munged. If I had to guess, it looks like the plugin stuff was copied before the config.xml file was updated with the flex sdk path. Consequently the copied config.xml was on the eclipse side was never updated. In any event, some for testing before releasing might have been helpful.

  • Help: Pointbase db doesn't start when launching SP4 portal

    Hi,
I downloaded WL platform SP4 today and installed (before the installation I uninstalled SP2)in my laptop. When I launch the examples portal, the pointbase db doesn't start. I tried both SP2 and SP3 in my laptop and both worked. The error messages below are directly copied from the console. My understanding is the portal server startup will automatically start pointbase db (I didn't do any configuration yet). Anybody know the problem and solution?
    My laptop config:
    Win XP, SP2, 1.6 GHz, 1GB memory
    I am the admin user.
    Thanks a lot!!
Error messages from the launching console:

The exception doesn't tell me much more than the DB connection / pool couldn't connect to the db.
Sometimes solving these types of problems where it should work, this works everywhere else, so what could be wrong here... Let me suggest that you install a new domain using a new root directory. IE c:\bea814 and not reuse c:\bea.
I'm guessing that an essential script or property file was not overwritten by the 814 install.
JBTW, 814 pointbase is a new version and is run on a new port from prior 8.x versions, the new port is 9093, where prior versions was 9092.
A diag. is after you start via, startWebLogic.cmd, to open a DOS window and run this command:
    netstat -an
Look for a LISTEN on port 9093
This would confirm that 814's pointbase is started and there's a configuration issue with the connection pools.
    Good luck, curt

  • What does the new in Pointbase JDBC Url mean?

what does the new in the URL mean? It is out of ServiceBus config:
    jdbc:pointbase:server://localhost:9193/weblogic_eval;new
    thanks,
    Barossa

if the database is not exist, it will create one for you.

  • How to access Pointbase?

    I create a domin,then I start the pointbase cmd,
I fill username and password both same weblogic(url:jdbc:pointbase:server://localhost:9093/weblogic_eval and driver:com.pointbase.jdbc.jdbcUniversalDriver,but I can't login it.
the error prompt is not port 9093 on listen,I don' know how to access!?

    Hi Fish,
It looks like you are using the correct connection URL and driver so it is likely that Pointbase did not start when you started your server. You should check your command window for error messages regarding Pointbase. Also, make sure that your start script was invoked with POINTBASE_FLAG=true in your environment.
If you don't know if POINTBASE_FLAG=true or how that would have gotten set then trace your start script and you will see that the setDomainEnv script is configured, by default, to use Pointbase.
I can never remember the connection URL for the Pointbase console so whenever I use it I look at the value in one of the XML files in the config/jdbc dir in my domain: C:\bea_wlp102\user_projects\domains\my_domain\config\jdbc
    The URL is:
    jdbc:pointbase:server://localhost:9093/WEBLOGIC_EVAL
    The driver is:
    com.pointbase.jdbc.jdbcUniversalDriver
I don't think the URL is case-sensitive, but just in case it is you might want to try consistent capitalization. For the user/password, the same thing. The XML file specifies WEBLOGIC, not weblogic.

  • Problem while changing DB from Pointbase to Oracle

    Hi All,
I dont know whether this is right place to ask this question, but I am newbie, on weblogic, and would like some assistance,
I am trying to point my DB in weblogic from Pointbase to Oracle, I have updated the database.properties file to point @ Oracle. Now when I go and try to exectue the create_db.cmd file to execute all the scripts and thereby load/create the DB, I get the below error when all the .sql files are executed.

I tried debugging the problem, and found that the table "PF_MARKUP_XML" was not created, the create script of that table is in the "pf_create_tables.sql" file. When I tried to manually execute the specific create script for that table it was executed successfully, and the table was created. So I dont know what is the problem then.
Any help on this would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
not sure which version of WLP you are running, but take a look at [http://edocs.bea.com/wlp/docs92/db/oracle.html|http://edocs.bea.com/wlp/docs92/db/oracle.html]:
"Note:      A WebLogic Portal Oracle database user that has DBA privileges causes database create errors and upgrade issues. Before you create database objects or perform an upgrade, you should revoke the Oracle user's DBA privileges and replace them with the following privileges: GRANT CREATE TABLE, CREATE VIEW, CREATE TRIGGER, CREATE SEQUENCE, CREATE SESSION, UNLIMITED TABLESPACE TO <<WEBLOGIC>>."
If the DB user you were using had DBA privileges then maybe this was the reason for your problem?
Seems to be still valid even for 10.2.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    Petri

  • How to set default 'schema' in Pointbase?

I am using Netbeans EA2 with bundled appserv. I have tried creating a CMP entity bean from the Pointbase sample database (PBPUBLIC), which works. But when i created my own database (MYDATABASE) in Pointbase and a CMP bean for my test-table, i get a SQLException: Invalid table name "Mytable" specified at position 147.
This exception is thrown when i run "findByPrimaryKey" on my tablebean's home.
I think i have narrowed the problem down to this:
When I execute sql-commands on my db, I have to write
    Select * from "MYDATABASE"."Mytable"
    If i try to execute
    Select * from "Mytable"
i get an error. (Invalid table name)
Whereas when i execute commands on the Pointbase sample db (PBPUBLIC), both these sql's work:
    select * from "PBPUBLIC"."CUSTOMER_TBL"
    and
    select * from "CUSTOMER_TBL"
    My questions are
    1. How do i specify that "MYDATABASE" should the default schema in my database?
is it possible at all? I have tried searching the pointbase docs, and looked in Pointbase Commander, but have found nothing.
    2. If I was going to fully qualify, that is, use "MYDATABASE"."Mytable" everytime i query the database, how and where do i specify that my entity bean should map betweed my dbschema and "MYDATABASE"."Mytable" ? Writing
<table-name>MYDATABASE.Mytable</table-name> in sun-cmp-mappings.xml did not work (but that was no suprise)
Is it not possible to fully qualify the tablename when using entity ejb's?
the error i get is similar to the one in this thread, except that my dbschema name is correct.
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=586762&tstart=0
I have tried creating a new dbschema in Netbeans, and editing sun-cmp-mappings.xml to point to the new dbschema. But i still get the same error.
And btw, i know that my database is available, cause when i try to get the DataSource for my db directly, and execute a query, it works. But i have to fully qualify the tablename.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks.

I solved using the SET PATH statement.
    SET PATH your_default_schema, PointBase;
Follow an extract from the PointBase Developers Guide:
If you never execute a SET PATH statement, then the CURRENT_PATH consists of the
schema POINTBASE, followed by your existing schema. When a SET PATH statement is
issued, it completely replaces the existing CURRENT_PATH, unless CURRENT_PATH is part
of the schemas being set in the path.
The order of the schemas in the path is generally crucial. When the database system is looking
for SQL objects, it looks for them in each schema (unless explicitly referenced otherwise),
starting with the first schema in the path, then the next, etc...., until an SQL object is found that
meets the criteria. One way to override the CURRENT_PATH is to explicitly reference the
SQL object. For example, to reference a table, you can specify schema_name.table_name. In
the above examples, the SQL object of table_name would be searched in the schema of name
    schema_name.
    I hope this helps,
