To Server or Not to Server?

I plan on buying a Mac Mini once Lion is released and the Mini is refreshed. I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade to Server or just use VPN/remote access. A little context and more on my setup. I know just enough to be dangerous but I really don't know anything.
I currently have a MacBook Pro (late2006), iPad (1st gen) 3 iPhones (4, 3G & 1st gen with no phone line for the 2.5 yr old), AppleTV (1st gen), Time Capsule and 3 Airport Expresses.
I have an HDTV, AT&T U-verse and I'm itching to cancel my cable subscription. I digress...
Moving forward, I want a system where, in general, everything is saved on one machine and all the devices can access it all. Once the MacBook gives out, I'll likely never buy another system that is not an iPad or MBAir.
Remember, I don't really know what I'm doing here. I know the concept of a server from using one at work and knowing that I love how it works. I don't know anything about how they really work.
I want to be able to use the Mini with my HDTV so I can't have it just acting as a server. I am also somewhat familiar with VPN. So, would it be better to just go that route? Is iCloud the answer to all my problems? I think it may be but wanted to get any opinions this knowledgeable community may have.

Since I have a similar installation running with Snow Leopard (macMini (1TB) as Server, 2 MacBook Air, MacPro as Workstation and another macMini as Windows/Bootcamp, mixed WLAN/EthernetCable), I dare to answer ;-)
1. Running a server means some administration, that is different from a normal workstation management. You have to go through the installation manual and understand the basics. Since you have some knowledge with VPN, you should be able to learn the few things that are needed to run the server in your private network.
2. The basic feature file sharing is rather simple and works fine. But you need some backup strategy. I have a 1TB TimeCapsule in my network for this purpose.
3. Using the server additionally as a workstation is generally not recommended. But this is clear: a server is a server and should be up 100% and should respond fast. So a user running apps is a risk, that no admin will accept. But in a private environment, where we know, what we are doing, it should be possible (I do not have the need in the moment). The apps you are running on the server should not need too much resources and should be stable (e.g having iTunes running in "server mode")
4. iCloud is a nice gimmic (I have a MobileMe account), but not really an alternative in your situation. The space is limited and only accessible with an active connection to the web. No long term storage. It might be rather fast, but already with files of some megabytes, the response times are not acceptable for daily work.
Besides file sharing I use the sever for my mail collecting. I use the Wiki feature as my own knowledge base. I use the web server environment (accessible from outside) to implement pre versions and showcases of RubyOnRails apps and other stuff, that might later be moved to a hosting service.

But then I get an error 1115 A system Shutdown is in progress. I attempt to fix this issue using pskill winlogon but the issue pursistest. I have restarted the server several times now. Not sure how to fix this.

My iphone wont let me play songs that I bought from iTunes. It says "The requested URL was not found on this server" How can i play my music also my music videos again?

I bought a few songs and music videos from iTunes, then all of a sudden it wouldn't play and would just skip to the next song. With the music videos it would do the same. Also, this message would show up " The Requested URL could not be found on this server" What does that exactly mean? And what do I need to do to play my music/videos again?

SharePoint Foundation 2013 installed on Windows Server 2012 not sending out email notification

I have a server where i installed SP Foundation 2013 on top of Windows Server 2012. I have configured the SMTP as well as the outgoing SMTP in Central Administration
of SharePoint. When i create an alert on a document library, its did not sent any email notification on the changes made to the document in the document library. So, i created a workflow to send out email using SPD2013. The workflow run, but it cannot sent
out email with error saying that outgoing email is not configured correctly. I have checked with another server which i installed SP foundation 2013 on top of Windows Server 2008 R2 - its sending out email just fine using same configuration and outgoing SMTP.
I need help to resolve this issue or at least the cause of the problem.

Go to Central Admin ---->Operations----->outgoing email settings and verify that SMTP server is mentioned correctly

3) Check alerts are enabled for your web application
verify if the windows timer service is running or not.
Run this stsadm command to check that
Stsadm.exe -o getproperty -url http://SharePoint-web-App-URL -pn alerts-enabled
This should return <Property Exist="Yes" Value="yes" />
If you don’t get this, Enable alerts by:
stsadm.exe -o setproperty -pn alerts-enabled -pv "true" -url http://SharePoint-web-App-URL
If its already enabled, try turn off and turn on it back.
4) Check the Timer job and Properties
Go to
MOSS 2007: Central Administration > Operations > Timer Job Definitions (under Global Configuration)
In SharePoint 2010: Central Administration > Monitoring > Review Job Definitions
Check whether the "Immediate Alerts" job is enabled for your web application. check these properties:
job-immediate-alerts
job-daily-alerts
job-weekly-alerts
stsadm.exe -o getproperty -url "http://Your-SharePoint-web-App-URL" -pn job-immediate-alerts
The expected output is:
<Property Exist="Yes" Value="every 5 minutes between 0 and 59"/>.
If you don’t get this, run the following command to set its value.
stsadm.exe -o setproperty -pn job-immediate-alerts -pv “every 5 minutes between 0 and 59" -url http://Your-SharePoint-web-App-URL
5) Check whether the account is subscribed for alerts and it has a valid email account. This should be the first thing to check if the problem persists for some users not for all.
6) Then check if at all those users have at least read permission for the list. Because the first mail should go out for every user without security validation but the next ones won't be delivered unless the user has at least read
permission.
7) If it is happening for one user, can also try to delete and re add the user in the site.
8) Most importantly , you should try this one.
Run this SQL query to the content db < Select * from Timerlock>
This will give you the name of the server which is locking the content database and since when.
In order to get rid of that lock
Go to that server which is locking the content db and then restart the windows timer service.
within some time it should release the lock from content db, if not then at the most stop the timer job for some time
Once the lock will be released then try to send some alerts
You will surely get the email alert.
I found this is the most probable reason for alert not working most of the time. We should start troubleshooting with above steps before coming to this step for any alert email issue but from step 1 to step 7 are best for new environments or new servers.
If the issue is like this ,alert was working before and suddenly stopped working without any environmental change then above conditions in step 1-7 should be ideally fine.
Even after this if it is not working, then you can try these few more steps too
9) Try re-registering the alert template:
stsadm -o updatealerttemplates -url http://Your-SharePoint-Web-App-URL -f "c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\XML\alerttemplates.xml" -LCID 1033
10) Try to clear the configuration cache

Team Foundation Server 2013 with SharePoint Foundation 2013 - Search not available?

we installed a TFS 2013 and let it deploy SharePoint Foundation on the same server. We are now faced with the fact that search in the teamsites is not working. I tried to get that search service up and running in a number of ways but it appears
as if there's no search service at all.
I have seen all the blogs where people are explaining how to provision a search service application for SharePoint Foundation but none of these ways work.
So, my question... is it possible to get it working?
PS. Please don't advice to post this on the TFS forum... I'm coming from there. They just closed my question as answered with the advice to post it in the SharePoint forum.

When you go to the Search Settings in the Site Actions menu of a site, a message is displayed that there's no search Service. Which is kind of normal since there's no Search Service Application provisioned.
When I go to Central Administration => Services on Server => There's no Search Service.
When I go to Central Administration and I run the configuration wizard, there's no search service application to be provisioned.
There's a Search Administration section in the General Settings but it only displays the upper section. The lower section (with the Search Service Application information) just gives me nothing. An animated loading icon.
I tried to provision the services with psconfig (psconfig -cmd services -install) but there's still no search service to be found anywhere. After this, I do have a Search Host Controller service but when I try to start it in Central Administration, it just
gives me an error.
I'm starting to think it's not a full SharePount Foundation which is shipped with TFS.
The only thing we want to achieve is that a user can search for a document he uploads in a team site which is created by TFS. Seems not possible... unless I'm missing something here.

Add management server: Setup version: 7.0.9538.0 is not compatible with database version: 7.1.10226.0

I want to add another management server to our existing SCOM environment. But whenever I run this setup on a new server I get stuck in the window for selecting the OperationsManager database. The database field stays blank and in the OpsMgrSetupWizard log
there are lines that the setup version is not compatible with the database version. But I use the same installer as when I installed the other management servers a year ago.
Maybe there is a newer setup installer? But I can't find it.

Apparently there was a newer version of SCOM setup in msdn and someone upgraded our existing SCOM environment. Downloaded the new setup, new report viewer controls and a System
CLR Types for Microsoft® SQL Server® 2012 and now it works!!

XML Publisher Report - Not able to see image stored on External server

I need to put image on XML report that is on different instance for that i had put a dummy image on XML template and in the WEB TAB for that image i put the tag like url:{ATTRIBUTE3} and attribute3 is having correct value we are also showing it on the report , but at the run time i can only see the dummy image of the template and the URL, not the actual image , URL points to a image on different server we can see the image when we place that URL in Web browser.

MS Project Pro file on Project Server 2010 does not accept [No Group] selection when clicking on Group view

MS Project Server 2010 gives me the following error when I try to click on the [No Group] group:
Error message:
The group "" cannot be found. You tried to display a view that references a group that is not available.
Specify a different group for the view."
Note: When I look at the drop downlist for the Group on the View Ribbon, [No Group] appears in the Built-in section of the list. It also appears on the Organizer.

I have seen this error message several times when the project got corrupted due to drops in my network connection while the enterprise project was open. If memory serves me correctly, the method for resolving this problem is to use the Save For
Sharing feature. To do this, complete the following steps:
Add the Save for Sharing button to your Quick Access Toolbar, if you have not already done so previously. Use the Project Options dialog for this.
Open the project in question and click the Save for Sharing button.
In the Save for Sharing dialog, save the MPP file in a location where you can find it easily, such as your Desktop.
Close the MPP file and then reopen it.
Click File > Save As and then click the Save button.
Using this process, Microsoft Project will resolve the corruption in your project. Please let us know if this process works for you.

How can I stop pop-ups saying "There is a problem logging on to server...You do not have permission..."., How can I stop pop-ups saying "There is a problem logging on to server...You do not have permission...".

I have a Mac Mini (early 2009) running OSX 10.8.1 on a Windows network that is driving me nuts.
Background
Typically, 6 or 7 computers are running (Windows 7, OSX 10.8.1 and Linux) on the network at any given point in time. Network printers and hand helds (iphones, PlayBooks, etc.) are also connected.
The problem
If one specific Windows 7 desktop is running, a pop-up error message comes up frequently. The eror message is:
There was a problem connecting to the server "[Server name or IP]". You do not have permission to access this server.
The pop-up sometimes refers to the device name and sometimes refers to the IP address of the desktop.
Oddities:
This does not occur on a MacBook Pro also running 10.8.1
The error message does not occur for other Windows computers on the network. I have laptops running Windows 7 Professional that have never shown up on the error message..
Files on the problem desktop are easily accessible through [Finder].
Things I've tried to resolve the problem:
Ran software update - multiple times
Changed the destination drive for [Time Machine] and completed a backup
Cleared the "Recent Server" list from the [Finder][Go][Connect to Server] screen
Attempted to demount the desktop in [Finder]. The option was not available
Disconnected from the desktop in [Finder]. This did not resolve the problem and the desktop was automatically showing on the [Shared] list in [Finder] after the next reboot.
Booted in SAFE mode to see if the problem re-occurred in SAFE mode. It did not.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you. It wasn't in there directly, but CISCO's "Network Magic" was there. Removing it appears to have solved the problem.

I have tried from so many forms. This is so frustrating. Thank for everyone/anyone who wants to help. So this is what happened: I had to uninstall my previous sqlserver 2012(which worked great) for some reason, and I uninstalled everything from that download.
Then I installed the trial edition of sql server 2012 (64 Bit) and It wouldn't connect to the database. (Error mentioned above.) My local DB is COWBOYS. (COWBOYS is also my computer name.) After this, I have tried downloading sqlexpress and sqlserver 64bit
many times and cannot connect to my local DB.
How do I connect to my Local DB?
Also, I think this might help: (When I run sqlserve.exe, which I was able to find in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\LocalDB\Binn, I get an error: Your SQL server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with(Error getting
instance ID from name). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem.
I would happily re install it, if it wasn't my 20th time.
I don't have any remote connections, I don't use username/password, only window authentication. I work mostly on visual studio, but without able to store /retrieve data, I don't know how to survive.
May be the solution is very simple, but I am too frustrated.

It sounds like there are a couple things going on here. First check if you have a successful install of SQL Server, then we'll figure out the connection issues.
Can you launch SQL Server Configuration Manager and check for SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) if default instance or SQL Server (other name) if you've configured your instance as a named instance. Once you find this, make sure the service is started.
If not started, try to start it and see if it throws an error. If you get an error, post the error message your hitting. If the service starts, you can then launch SSMS and try to connect. If you have a default instance, you can use the machine
name in the connection dialog. Ex: "COWBOYS" where Cowboys is the machine name. However, if you named the SQL Server instance during install, you'll need to connect using the machine\instance format. Ex: COWBOYS\Romo (where Romo
is the instance name you set during install).
You can also look at the summary.txt file in the SQL Server setup error logs to see what happened on the most recent install. Past install history is archived in the log folder if you need to dig those up to help troubleshoot, but the most
recent one may help get to the bottom of it if there is an issue with setup detecting a prior instance that needs to be repaired.

HELP! iPhone 3GS stuck in recovery loop and iTunes gives error message" iPod update server can not be contacted"

As I said, it's an iPhone 3GS (never jailbroken), iOS 4.1, PowerPC G4 OS X 10.4.11, iTunes 9.2. I have had the phone since new, never had any issues with it and am at my wits end trying to figure it out. I have seen many different solutions to this exact problem, but none have worked for me. Anyone have any ideas?

I've had the iPhone 3GS since it came out. It was working fine until I just tried to update it. It has NEVER been hacked or jailbroken. WE AND A FEW OTHERS are having the same issue then it is more than likely that this is an update issue. I took mine to the Apple store and the tech tried to update it and he came to the same problem and told me he couldn't update it. My assumption is that we are not the only one's with this issue and that if there was a way to update it to the update before this last one it might be a solution. I don't know how to get the previous update. Apple probably is aware of the problem, and hasn't come up with a solution yet. Or, enough people haven't complained yet. The tech suggested that there might be something wrong with the phone itself, but that couldn't be since it was working perfectly before I updated it and others are having the same issue. It is highly unlikely that a lot of people are having the same hardware issue all of a sudden at the same time. Apple/iTunes needs to fix this... and hopefully soon
Also: I can update or restore my iPhone 5 and other iPhones so it is not an issue with my firewall or other software on my computer. No one touches my iPhone or my computer they are secure, locked all the time, and I have no jailbreak software on my computer (Apple tried it and they are clueless at the moment from what I can tell).

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

Software for HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP is not currently available from the Software Update server.

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion, and found that I could no longer print to my HP CM1312nfi.
This is usually a problem with HP at every upgrade, but this time, they appear to have offloaded the driver download process to Apple.
My printer is connected wirelessly through a time capsule by IP address—the physical, not the virtual, e.g: 169.254.xx.xx instead of 10.0.1.x.
When I try to download the driver by bonjour or IP, I get the following error message:
Can't install the software for the Hewlett-Packard HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP because it is not currently available from the Software Update server.
Is this truly a Software Update server error, and if so, any clue when it will be resolved?
I am able to print with the generic driver as of now, but fax and scan capabilites are gone. The add fax dialog lists no devices.
Scanning is not supported on my printer model with the Hewlett Packard Print 2.12 driver. Will support be forthcoming, or did Mountain Lion brick my scanner?

HP webservices tab not available when using HP Jetdirect 2700w wireless print server

I recently bought HP Laserjet Enterprise 500 m551 dn color laser printer with HP jetdirect 2700w wireless print server ( one day old at this time).
I was able to configure the device and enable/ use eprint services using the embedded server with a wired connection.
However when I attach a the mentioned wireless print server, the "Webservices" tab disappears from the configuration website, the printer reports that the eprint services are not enabled and ofcourse hp eprint or google cloud print do not work. The printer appears offline at eprintcenter. Everything else works fine.
On the product website for the wireless server, it clearly states that this is compatible with eprint services.
What am I doing wrong.

This seems to be a commercial product. For the best chance at finding a solution I would suggest posting in the forum for HP Business Support!
