To walk on virtual ground or real ground?

Hi everyone
I am in the middle of planning a short film that will involve a lot of green screen work. Over the years I have watched a number of making ofs of big budget hollywood films some of them involving a lot of green screen work as well. I noticed that whenever a shot included peoples feet on the ground, they were never walking on a green screen. the ground, be it a desert, or road or whatever was always reproduced in the studio. why exactly is this? is it not possible to just have them walk on a green screen and replace the ground with whatever you want. on the other hand I suppose that if the ground were very bumpy and their would be mounds of dirt or grass covering parts of the actors feet that would be very difficult to recreate in post/compositing. Is my thinking correct here?
My shortfilm in particular involves an actor walking on a tarred road (asphalt) could I get away with the actor walking on a green screen and then later on putting the road under him? or would there be undesirable artifacts/results that I am not aware of? Are smooth surfaces ok/doable on a green screen and its just bumpy sirfaces that need the "real thing"?
Thanks in advance for any advice
cheers
Angus

The subtleties of the human walk... In short: walking on green/ blue screen always looks floaty. Walking on different grounds results in different foot rolling, pelvis rotation etc.. - walking in soft grass is different than walking in sand, even if the ground is level. Your muscles, bones and tendons will on an unconscious level compensate for compression, canting, direction etc. and that in turn ripples up to your spine, affecting whole body posture. Since we see people every day, we simply see this and if it doesn't fall within what we consider to be "normal" based on our experience, it looks wrong. The eternal bane of 3D character animators. And yes, of course som effects are hard to add later on. Depending on how fine or crude the pebbles in the tarmac are, shadow casting as well as the overall saturation would also look different and might be harder to match...

    When you say they are displaying in your iTunes library, are you talking about the Audiobooks section of your iTunes library and not the audiobooks section indented under the iPod in the left pane of iTunes under Devices?
    Is the iPod Shuffle configured to sync audiobooks or do you manually manage the iPod's contents?

  • STMS Configuration - Change Virtual System with Real System

    Dear all,
    My system, if I go in the transaction STMS in DEV system, was configureted in the following way:
    DEV => QA => PROD (Virtual System)
    Now, I want to change the PROD Virtual System in PROD Real System.
    How Can procede?
    Can you explain step-by-step the process?
    Because the system was configureted from other people, and I'm new to using the STMS.
    Thanks in advanced for your help.
    Best Regards,
    Giulio

    Hi,
    After the planned system is physically installed it is time to replace the Virtual System with the realized system.
    The procedure for the same is as under:
    1) Delete the Virtual System from the transport domain
    . Login into Transport Domain system client 000
    · Using STMS got to Overview=> Systems
    · Chose SAP Virtual System=> Delete (confirm)
    · Distribute configuration change.
    As soon as the configuration change is distributed, the virtual system is deleted. The import queue for this system in TMS disappears but it is available as import buffer at the operating systems level.
    Now add the new (physical system) to the transport domain:
    If STMS is configured as standalone system then first delete STMS configuration on PRD system
    login into PRD system client 000. (delete STMS configuration if present.)
    run stms -> it's ask for set up STMS -> click on other configurition (F6)
    Target Host -> host name of domain controller ( host name of transport domain system)
    System number -> Instance number of domain controller ( instance number of transport domain system)
    Now,
    Go to the Transport Domain Controller and accept the system. (As the import buffer is available at the    operating system level, no change requests will be lost)
    Distribute the configuration changes.

  • NAC - virtual gateway vs. real gateway

    Hi All,
    I don't have too much experience with NAC deployment. I want to go with L3 (because we have central site), OOB (for LAN) and IB (for wireless and VPN). but I don't know whether I should go with real gateway or virtual gateway. I know virtual gateway is easier than real gateway. but technically, which way is more popular and provide better security measures?
    any suggestion would be very appreciated.
    thanks
    Alex

    If your remote subnets are multiple hops away, RIP would be the option you should use. They both are equally popular, but for L3 subnets which are remote, RIP is the most often used design

  • Activity monitor inconsistancy - what is real virtual memory size???

    When I look at my activity montior system memory screen I see real and virtual memory in MB (with the largest at about 500MB).  As in my previous post I see a VM size of >240GB.  When I go to the File menu and hit Save... and then look at the resulting processes.txt file I see that the virtual memory is now listed in GB.  The real memory is consistent with what I see on the activity monitor window.  See below.  What's up?  Which virtual memory is real and which is "virtual"?

    Ignore that. The method it's calculated works as following:
    1. You have the Finder and Safari open.
    2. Both programs and no other ones use the content of a single block of data. This block takes up 2MB of RAM or swapfile space.
    3. The block is counted as 4MB in the VM size entry because it's being used twice.
    Expanding the scenario over many processes and blocks adds up to a VM size figure which is far larger than the actual amount in use or the combined total of RAM and swapfile space.

  • Prepare Arch on Virtual Box then move to Real PC

    Can I set Arch on a Virtual Box (convinent to have the wiki handy) then move it to my real PC? Will it work (virtual hardware vs real ones)? If so how do I proceed? On Ubuntu, theres RemasterSys which is for this purpose but has its faults. How do I achieve this anyways on Arch?

    Problem now is GNOME does not start (I think a driver problem), and theres no network
    When I've tried to convert from one file format to another it doesn't quite rework it.
    When I do grub-install I don't use boot-directory.
    I just use grub-install /dev/sda, unless I have a FreeBSD loader, which then I use /dev/sdax.  Your menu.lst will pick up the kernels in /dev/sda5 with:
    root (hd0,4)
    kernel /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda6 ro
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    You can type those lines above directly into the grub command-line and should be able to get it to boot.

  • My Mini is gobbling up virtual memory--is this normal?

    My "late 2005" 1.5GHz/1GB RAM Mini has turned into something of a wind tunnel. The fan is constantly revving up and down, making really annoying "whistling wind" noises.
    I've been watching the Activity Monitor for several days now, trying to figure out which processes might be causing this strange behavior.
    One thing I've noticed is that the machine is using huge amounts of Virtual Memory. In some instances, applications such as Mail are using 10 times more Virtual Memory than Real Memory. For instance, right now, Mail (sitting idle) is using 0.00% of the CPU, 56MB of Real Memory, and 336MB of Virtual Memory. Several other "idle" applications are also using between 200 and 400 megabytes of Virtual Memory. And I've seen instances where Adobe Photoshop is eating up more than a gigabyte of Virtual Memory.
    Are these numbers normal? Is this perhaps what is contributing to my Mini's erratic behavior?
    Thanks in advance to anyone who cares to offer words of advice!

    I don't run Photoshop CS on my mini, but the mail app is typically running 24/7 and doesn't cause me any issues, and only runs up to 80+% CPU load when fetching or sending large files. Normally I'd be inclined to suggest that is a normally well behaved application is causing an issue with a specific system it would possibly be worth checking the heat sink to make sure it's located correctly, but since you report that CPU load is also high, the chances are the cooling system is doing what it should - being triggered by load.
    It is therefore, in my mind, much more likely that you have a software/OS problem than a hardware issue, and while that's easy to say, it makes it harder to try and diagnose because it could be caused by any number of things - even multiple or damaged fonts, bad cache files, faulty prebinding etc.
    First thing to try therefore is a multi-function utility (my favorite is YASU, but OnyX and Cocktail are good too - and all available from www.versiontracker.com). Select complete prebinding, cleaning all system and user caches, cleaning logs files/running cron tasks, and repairing permissions (in YASU that would be selecting all tasks except deleting cookies). Once completed and the system rebooted, it'll be sluggish at first as the cache files are being rebuilt. If the problem disappears, the likelihood is that it had suffered a corrupt system cache - possibly the font cache. If it doesn't, download a copy of Preferential Treatment from versiontracker and run that with system and user preferences selected (this application examines preference files for damage). If that doesn't work, then open Foot Book (in the applications folder) and check through your installed fonts. A duplicate or a damaged font could cause the sort of CPU load you are experiencing.

  • Virtual Directory-Simple question

    Hello!
    My application needs to access a number of files in several directories. They are mear static .PDF files.But when i call them my program is written in such a way that, it points out to the physical directory, like "C:\application\repots\myreport.pdf" and the same thing will desplayed in the browser.Any one of you please help me in creating "Virtual directory" and how to map that to the physical directory where all my files exist.
    Thanks for your earliest response.

    I have a servlet that generates a String as follows
    reports\RPTS200208\E200208-89000001.PDF where 2002= current year
    08=current month
    89000001 is the code that has been submitted from a jsp page( getParameter()).
    I have a Physical directory called reports in which all these sub-directories and the .PDF files inturn.
    I included orion-web.xml file and i wrote it as follows.
    <?xml version = '1.0' encoding = 'windows-1252'?>
    <!DOCTYPE orion-web-app PUBLIC "-//Evermind//DTD Orion Web Application 2.3//EN" "http://xmlns.oracle.com/ias/dtds/orion-web.dtd">
    <orion-web-app servlet-webdir="/servlet/">
         <virtual-directory virtual-path="/reports"
              real-path="\\wdcapps01dev\Ddrive\test\isis\reports" />
    </orion-web-app>
    in theory it should pull that particular .PDF file..but surprisingly is not. I don't know where I am going wrong.I would be very thankful to you if you help me out of this problem. Thank you.

  • JDeveloper 9i RC and OC4J virtual directory

    Hi,
    How can I configure the following tags from my tomcat/catalina "server.xml" file to JDeveloper OC4J?
    <context path="/images" docBase="c:\images"/>
    <context path="/javascript" docBase="c:\javascript"/>
    <context path="/styles" docBase="c:\styles"/>
    I have tried adding the following entries to the "%JDEV_HOME%\jdev\system\oc4j-config\global-web-application.xml" without success.
    <virtual-directory real-path="c:\images" virtual-path="/images" />
    <virtual-directory real-path="c:\javascript" virtual-path="/javascript" />
    <virtual-directory real-path="c:\styles" virtual-path="/styles" />
    As a work-around I have copied these directories to the default-web-app root directory.
    Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    David

    Try this in the orion-web.xml for your web application.
    Assuming you all your images in a directory called e:\pictures and you want to add this /img virtual directory you have to edit the orion-web.xml file for your web application as follows:
    <virtual-directory
    virtual-path="/img"
    real-path="/e:/pictures/" />

  • What happens to Virtual Box Partition after uninstallation.

    I am peter currently working on OS X Yosemite.
    My mac is consisted of 500Gb Flash drive, * Gd Ram, I3 Processor and etc.
    I have Installed Virtual Box & during Installation I have selected the Partition of 100GB, what will happen to that space when I uninstall virtual box.
    Because later when I tried to install windows through bootCamp assistant, I have continious error speaking about partition.
    How to resolve this issue

    As far as I know, if you delete a folder, then any virtual copies made from photos in this folder will also be deleted.
    If so, is this reversible in any way? Will i recover these virual copies if I add the folder back into LR's catalog later on?
    Your virtual copies will not return. Which brings up the interesting question ... why delete photos/folders from Lightroom only to bring them back later? My suggestion is that you not delete the folders. Just leave everything imported in Lightroom, do not delete photos/folders from Lightroom, its a much better workflow, takes less work, and doesn't run the risk of deleting something only to find you need it later. The idea of deleting folders from Lightroom only to import them later is abhorrent to me.
    Also will Adobe Bridge be able to read these virtual copies in both before and even after the folder has been removed from LR4? Or is the 'virtual copy' functionality specific to LR and that the only way to preserve it is to keep the original image within LR and never delete it?
    Virtual copies exist in Lightroom. They do not exist outside of Lightroom.
    If you really want to have virtual copies outside of Lightroom, you would need to export them (which changes them from virtual copies to real copies)

  • Going from a 4tb drive to a 6tb drive. Virtual files, where I do my editing, don't copy. Any way I can move them? I'm using LR 5.7 on a Mac.

    I've run out of space on my 4 TB drive, so I copied everything to a 6TB drive. But the virtual Lightroom files, where I do most of my editing, didn't appear on the new drive. Is there any way I can get them to show up, along with my edits, on the new drive?
    Photoshop Lightroom

    Virtual copies are just that, virtual and not real copies. You won't find them in Finder because they are no more than additional notations in the catalog database file recording a set of alternative edits. As long as the catalog is correctly pointed to the new home of the images the VCs will be there also.

    Hi,

    So we have removed the virtual ip and no problems are occured now.

    Hi,
    Virtual ip provides a single ip for tcp connection for the users in case of a failover to another machine and you don't have to inform users to log into another ip.
    There might be problem in configuring virtual ip if you are not able to connect to it.
    The virtual ip is just an alias of the main network interface
    which means this will function as long as main interface is functioning.

  • Local director with multiple virtual servers

    I have a local director with 4 interfaces. Two interfaces are used for 2 virtual servers each bound to 2 real servers. The virtuals and the reals are on the same sub-net as the local director's IP address.
    I would like to know if I can use the other 2 interfaces to bind 2 real addresses to a third virtual where all three of the address are located on a different Subnet from the servers already present.

    Yes this is possible. However, in order to make this work you will need to configure a couple
    of things. First, on the Local Director you should configure an 'alias ip address' that belongs in this new subnet. Second, you need to configure a secondary IP address on the upstream router. This will serve several purposes. One, the servers will be able to reach devices outside their own subnet. Two, the router will now belong to this subnet and therefore will be able to ARP for the new virtual.
    Hope it helps.

  • ACE 4710 - Monitoring Real Server Showing N/A

    I recently installed a Cisco ACE 4710 version A4(2.0) into our test network. Load balancing across a number of web servers appears to be working ok and serving pages to users. However, when i tried to check the real time stats via device manager (Monitor> virtual contexts> context > Real servers) a number of fields specifically "current connections", "total conns", "failed conns" etc were showing N/A. Do I need to enable this somehow i.e. polling, if so how?

    Hello Samson,
    You may try to reboot the entire ACE 4710, probably during a maintenance window, some java process might have gotten stuck.
    If the issue persists then open a TAC case since there are some software defects related to this behavior.
