To Zone or not to Zone

Hi,
I am studying up on Zones, Containers, LDOMs and anything else they want to make up along the way. I have a Blade 6000 that I am about to set up and I want to know what is really the best way to set it up with the following goals and configuration in mind:
1. Blade 6000 with 2 - T6300 (T1 Processor) server modules
2. Will be buying possibly the StorageTek Array 2540 Fiber interface disk array with 2 FC cards
3. Have various applications like Cool Stack (SAMP) that runs an internally used web based application
4. Will be running an e-commerce site as well in a couple of months but may have to buy a Opteron based server module since Bozos built it on .ASP (Microsucks) environment.
5. Want to use first T6300 for production and the second for failover/pre production environment. The second one will allow me to iron out details of all upgrades, or software products that I might want to experiment with and in case something happens to the first one, provide failover. I assume Sun Clustering software would have to be installed for this.
6. Plan on using ZFS since it's way cool and easy in a RAID 5 config.
7. Would like to assign resources to various applications/solutions to provide minimal resources to lower priority applications/solutions like internal web app. versus high priority e-commerce web app.
For those who aren't up on Cool Stack, it is Solaris, Apache, MySQL and PHP (SAMP) that has been preconfigured for easy set up and tuned for Solaris.
I was told by a Sun rep that I might want to consider using LDOMs in lieu of Zones and also use the failover option for Sun Clustering versus the speed boost configuration. He said that the speed boost version of Sun Clustering has little use for applications that can't take advantage of it. My assumption was that it would operate similar to RAC for Oracle in that, when you add a node it got faster and even more fail safe. I didn't know you had to choose between speed and high availability.
Questions:
1. Why use LDOMS as opposed to Zones
2. Can you briefly explain how Zones, LDOMs and Containers compare to each other and when and how each are used
3. Can I install Solaris on both T6300s and bind them together somehow to form a Cluster
4. Is there a dependency of one to the other? Do you have to install one before the other?
5. Is there a document that compares LDOMs, Container, Zones, Sun Clustering and shows how to plan an installation
My apologies for so many questions at one time but I am researching and studying the best approach and I haven't seen documentation that does a good job of pulling it all together.

1. Why use LDOMS as opposed to ZonesHmm. That's kind of a general trade-off. I don't see one as better than the other. They do somewhat different things.
2. Can you briefly explain how Zones, LDOMs and Containers compare to each other and when and how each are usedLDOMs are like fully virtual machines, assisted by hardware. You can (must) run a separate operating system in each domain. This gives you a significant amount of flexibility, but there can be some performance trade-offs. Also, you'll select hardware components and assign them to a specific LDOM.
Zones/Containers are a Solaris construct to restrict how things run. They have some aspects of virtual machines (processes don't see processes in other zones, independent IP addresses, etc...), but they have some restrictions as well. However they can be much lighter-weight than a full VM because you're not running a separate OS in each case. In the case of sparse zones, you might be able to run many more zones than you could LDOMs. By default all hardware components are shared across all zones, but you can enable resource restrictions to assign or limit CPU and memory in particular zones.
3. Can I install Solaris on both T6300s and bind them together somehow to form a ClusterIt depends on what you mean by "bind", and it depends on the application you want to run.
You can use cluster software (like SunCluster) to set up failover between different machines, blades, LDOMs, and zones. But if you want an application to run on them simultaneously, that depends on the application and how it supports clusters.
4. Is there a dependency of one to the other? Do you have to install one before the other?I'm not sure which you're referring to here. But no, not really. A cluster, an LDOM, and a Zone are all independent constructs.
5. Is there a document that compares LDOMs, Container, Zones, Sun Clustering and shows how to plan an installationHere's a blueprint on some of the virtualization techniques.

  • How to display system time zone if user time zone is not set?

    Hi,
My application implicitely chooses ALA as time zone if the user time zone is not set.
    How do I check this?

    Hi,
    Try using these FM's
    TZON_GET_USER_TIMEZONE
    GET_SYSTEM_TIMEZONE
    Z_LOCATION_TIMEZONE
You can set the timezone in sy-zonlo by using the 1st FM and setting sy-zonlo in your application.
I think system takes ALA default because its the 1st timezone in the table.(check FM BWDT_LIST_TIMEZONES)

  • SRM - Warning Msg "Time zone CST not valid in country US"

    Dear SRM Experts,
I'm working on an issue where when the user try to edit the PO, system return the WARNING as below:
Time zone CST not valid in country US (several possibilities)
When I drill into this warning message, here is the content:
    Diagnosis
    1. If the time zone entered is not maintained as the default setting for the country.
    2. If the time zone entered for the country and region is not maintained as the default setting for this combination of country and region.
    3. If the time zone entered for the country and postal code is not maintained as the default setting for this combination of country and postal code.
    System Response
The warning AM 482 is displayed under the circumstances detailed above.
    Procedure
Delete the entry in the field "time zone". The default time zone for the combinationof country, region and postal code will then be used, provided it has been maintained in the IMG ("Maintain time zones") .
    Procedure for System Administration
My PO is meant for US Arizona. Base on IMG configuration, CST time zone has already configured for US country code.
Your advice will be very much appreciated, thank you.

KB Article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2749599/en-us suggests applying Windows and SharePoint updates, but does not points to a specific update. Also suggests to enable "Always follow

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that SharePoint 2010 (SP2010 SP1+ AU CU 2011) site built with Project Web Access template shows warning "Your Local Machine Time Zone does not match your current Sharepoint Regional Settings".
Users are getting this message even after correctly specifying and changing the timezone in their Sharepoint Settings. This is a common problem across the net, but we've found a workaround
    that will eliminate this problem.
Step 1: Open your Web Database in your Browser
Step 2: Click the Arrow Under the Login ID (upper right corner)
    Step 3: Choose My Settings
Step 4: Click the My Regional Settings Link
Step 5: Uncheck the 'Always Follow Web Settings' check and specify your time zone.
    Step 6: Click OK
For more information, you can refer to:

  • Local zones do not start when rebooting gobal zone

HMy solaris host had been working well. Then all in a sudden, all local zones do not start automatically after I reboot the system. Did anybody see this before? Thanks.

Thanks, Robert. There no error in /var/adm/messages. I can start zones manually.
I found the status of svc:/system/zones:default is offline. With this status, zones will not autoboot regardless of zones configuration. But I cannot enable the service. After I execute the following command
    # svcadm enable svc:/system/zones:default
the status of that service is still offline. Any idea?

  • My time zone will not automatically reset

I have been in South America for 2 months. Coming from the states, my time zone adjusted automatically (1 hour time difference). I spent a weekend in Uruguay and when I returned to Argentina, the time zone did not readjust to Argentina time, but stayed on Uruguayan time (another hour difference). I've tried turning on/off the automatically adjust button in the time zones section as well as restarting my computer. What else can I do to fix this?

This didn't work. I've tried turning off the phone resetting location services, turning airplane mode on and off, opening the map app (which does recognize I'm in the USA ) and I'm still on brazil time.

  • Zones could not connect Oracle in global zone

Today I tried to install Zones for our customers.
I configed Zone1 and Zone2. Applications running in Zone1 and Zone2 used JDBC to connect to Oracle.
    1. Both Zone1 and Zone2 can connect to other Oracle DB servers except the one in global zone.
    2. All other clients or machines can connect to the Oracle DB server in the global zone.
So, the Oracle server in the global zone is running and zones network connection is good.
Is this a bug? This is very weird.
    Please help me! Thanks.

Issue is : Application in Zone1 and Zone2 could not connect Oracle dB in global zone. JDBC error is network adapter error. could not setup connection.
Under zone1 or zone2, i can ping global zone. And I can telnet Oracle listening port.
    please help.

  • Entourage: "Event and computer time zones do not match."

Since installing the latest update to the Mac OS (10.4.6) I have a glitch with Entourage (Office 2004 for Mac v. 11.2.3) and I believe it has something to do with the Mac OS. See below for explanation:
When adding a new calendar event to the calendar, I get an error which reads:
"Event and computer time zones do not match. In Calendar views, the event time is adjusted to display correctly." This is not true. I've checked the time zones in both my OS and Entourage and that is not the problem.
It must have to do with how it interacts with the latest update of the Mac OS. I had not updated software on my laptop for a while, and it did not exhibit this error, so as a test, I downloaded and installed the latest version of Office and tested Entourage: no error message. To be sure, I restarted the computer and tried again: no error. Then I downloaded and installed all of the latest updates to the Mac OS using Software Update: I got the error. So, I think the problem is the interaction between the latest update of Office 2004 for Mac and the latest Mac OS or maybe even just something in the Mac OS.
There are plenty of people complaining about this on the newsgroups at Mactopia. I'm not sure who needs to repair this problem - Apple or Microsoft, but does anyone know if there will be a patch issued by Microsoft to fix the problem? Or maybe my assessment is wrong and you have another solution?
Thanks very much for your help with this problem.

I am in Ohio (eastern time) and I am also having this problem. It is not annoying but my problem is I am not able to schedule any meeting on Entourage. (It will not show if the person I am inviting is busy or not). They use the Exchange server in my company, and I read on the microsoft site that public folders and hence the calendar items are not synced. But seems like this page is for Office X and not 2004. Any clues? Is the time error related to me not able to schedule meetings? I am using latest 10.4 and Entourage 2004.

  • Launch Zone will not save settings after powering off/on

Ok...noob here, but i just changed Zone 3: Read of the Launcher from Kindle to Zinio, but when I power off the unit (not put it to sleep) and turn it back on, Zone 3 of the launcher reverts back the Kindle app.  Anyone have this happen?  Am  I missing a setting some place?
    **FOLLOW UP**
Got off the phone with Lenovo support, their K1 does not revert back to the factory settings when they change one of the "zones" in the Launch Zone application.  We even did a factory reset, made changes, turned off the K1, turned it back on and it still would not keep my changes.  Their only recommendation is to take it back to Best Buy (where I bought it and see if some there can re-install the Launch Zone application as it apparently has a bug.  So unles someone else has any ideas, looks like I am out of luck and have to return this puppy.

Since I have 801, I guess that is why my tablet did not get an update out of the box when I went to go update it?  I saw people updating to 829, so I was perplexed why I could not get 829 when I was on 801, and naturally 801 being a lesser version number than 829 I was confused.  Anyhow, do you have an ETA when the LLW fix will be in (in a week?) and can I simply get it OTA?
    Thanks!
I can't give a release date in case we find something last minute and end up with a delay.  I wouldn't be surprised to see it sometime next week, but I can't promise that will happen.  Once it's released, you'll be able to get it via OTA.
As for the update to 0829, I imaged one of my tablets with the 0801_US manufacturing image and was able to update to 0829 without any issue.  Can you give it another shot?  When you do "check for new version" under System Updates, you will only get a message immediately if it doesn't find an update.  If an update is found, the download will begin immediately, indicated by a little down arrow by the clock.  You'll only be prompted to apply the update (or cancel) once the download is complete.  It won't fix the LLW persistence issue (I tested that again, just for fun), but it will get you to a more stable image.
If you don't mind, give that a go and please let me know what happens.
Full disclosure: Lenovo issues my paychecks.

  • JVM Time Zone does not updates

In my application, users can change the Time and the Time-Zone as required.
    I m changing the system-time and system-time-zone. I used TimeZone.setDefault() method to changed the JVM's Time-Zone.
So that the JBoss server does not need to restart to get the new Time-Zone.
But Jboss does not shows the correct time in its console.
Restart of the JBoss server fix the problem.
Can anybody tell me how to tackle this issue?

    Hi,
did you try to import the time zones from note 198411?
There is a fairly clear document accompanying this note, it worths reading it.

  • How can I get Firefox 12 to honor "Do not preserve zone information in file attachments" in Windows 7 x64 Group Policy?

Every time I download a file, any file, .jpeg, .png, .exe, anything, Firefox ignores the group policy setting and I have to "unblock" every single download.
This also applies to pictures I right-click on and "save image as," not just download with the download manager.

I fixed it. I remember the same issue happening in Firefox 3 and comment #3 at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=499448 gives a workaround. I had to have all 3 values set the way comment #3 explained to get Firefox to not save zone.identifier information.
Maybe open a new bug report?

  • How can I change the time zone while not changing the time

Let me preface this by saying I know this may seem tiddling to many but it is somthing I am rather obsessive about.
I took many photos while I was in Los Angeles.  I had changed my camera's clock and the clock in the MacBook Pro to Pacific Standard Time and my iPhone automatically did the same thing. When I loaded photos into Aperture on my MacBook Pro the time information was all correct, all photos tagged in PST.  I had some photos I took on my last day that I did not load into Aperture until I got home to Denver.  When I loaded these images into Aperture they still have the correct time that they were shot but now show as being taken on Mountain Standard Time.  If I change the time zone in Aperture then the image time is also adjusted to be one hour earlier.
Is there any way I can change the time zone in Aperture while leaving the actual image time alone?

    Hello Mark,
Aperture will display the "Date created" with respect to the time zone your system is set to, but the "Date" using the time zone the image was taken in.
You can adjustthe Time Zone for individual images either on import or afterwards using batch change:
Select the images you want to adjust, then select "Metadata -> Batch Change" from the Aperture Application menu:
    Click: Adjust Time Zone
Set the Camera's Time Zone to the Time zone you set your camera to when you took the images, and the Actual Time Zone to the zone you want Aperture to use to display the date.
    Regards
    Léonie
    P.S:
This works with most cameras, but there seems to be a bug with canon cameras when importing directly from the camera. Frank Caggiano recently started a thread, but right now I cannot find the link.
