TOC is blank

Hi,
I am creating a table of contents that is blank. After reading other comments to check the "story editor" there is nothing else created but the specified title.
Please see below:
Table of Contents style:
I have run the "SplitStory"script and also cleared all overrides to make sure as well.
I have ensured that only the specified text fields are in the paragraph style TOC Heading
Background information:
This is an 11 page master document.
I am new to indesign and have amended another persons format to how I need it for a data merge.
The last thing I need to work is the contents.
Hope you are able to help me,
Warm regards,
Chrissy

Hi P Spier, I am not too sure I understand your answer. See example below:
The selected text left is formatted as per the TOC Heading that I am looking to generate in my TOC.

  • Child TOC pane blank in merged CHM set-up

We are experiencing an issue with our TOC pane when viewing a child CHM in a merged set-up. The TOC appears completely blank although the index and search work successfully. If the parent help file is launched all works as expected with the TOC displayed regardless of which topic is selected from it. However if a child project is launched, the TOC does not display.
We are using the method of merging CHMs that involves adding the parent project's .HHC file to the Advanced Window properities of each child project. We have also amended the .HHP file of each child to include the relevant [MERGED FILES] section. All of this is highlighted in Rob Chandlers article on the subject and has worked in the past. Remove the reference to the parent .HHC file from the window properties and it all works but we need to this for context sensitive help calls so that the child CHM is called yet display the parent TOC.
However we were using RHX5 then and now we are using RH8 and it appears this method no longer works. Has anyone else come up against this, and more importantly found a solution?

    Hi Amber.
Thanks very much for the response. Unfortunately using conditional build tags is a must for us so we have to compile inside RH. We are very near code freeze so at this late stage do not wish to change anything drastically. The CHM is only being distributed as a backup in case any of our users don't have an internet connection.
For now I think we'll live with it annoying as it is . If you can find out about what your app is doing that would be useful to know and we'll see if we can change the app post release.

  • An error prevents TOC from being displayed on IE8

    Hello,
I am using RH 9.0.1 and IE 8.0.7. When I compile a help project in webhelp format, the TOC is not displayed in the output result. A yellow error icon is displayed in the lower left corner of the browser window with the following information:

The same occurs in Google Chrome. Does anybody know how this could be fixed?
    Thank you in advance,
    Tony

    Hello Wiliam,
    Thank you for your reply.
You are right, the search and index are not working either. I knew about the Chrome issue when opened locally. If I follow the instructions on the website you mentioned, the webhelp will show the contents, but not the TOC, and the Index and Search do not work either. The same problem occurs on Firefox 3.6.3. I am not using Chrome Frame in Internet Explorer.
Basically, what I get is a blank TOC, a blank Index and the Search does not work. When I click on the "Error on page" yellow icon I get the error message I posted above. Any suggestions?
I've used RH 7 before and I never had this issue.

  • TOC and text flow bug?

I have a TOC that spans about 5 pages (or should).  I've created the TOC and shift click insert it, it then place 2 1/2 pages (about 50% of the total) and then a preflight error is displayed regarding overflow text. Clicking it indicates the problem to be located 2 pages after where the TOC stopped (at only 50% inserted/displayed), and the page in between the last page of the half-placed/displayed TOC and the preflight error message, both are blank.
    For example:
    Section 1
    i - TOC page 1 placed (w/shift click)
ii - TOC page 2 (flowed)
iii - TOC page 3 (flowed, but stopped at half page and only 50% of total TOC)
    iv - Blank page
v - Blank page - preflight error messge refers to this page
On a side note: how to see/determine quickly that a page/spread has content? When I trash a page in the Page palette, a confirmation delete message displaying indicating the page has content.
    Thx

    Regarding:
    From my first/intial post:
When I trash a page in the Page palette, a confirmation delete  message displaying indicating the page has content.
    And you wrote:
"t's also possible you've got hidden objects on a page you want to  delete, but that usually would be less likely than a page number."
While searching for an explanation of this mysteriously missing last page from my other concurrent post, in opening a previous document version, I saw many additional pages at the end of the section, apprx. 5 addtional - all blank with excpetion to the master number marker and a text frame (which I assume were placed for the multiple repeated TOC inserstions). So I began deleting those (for "fun"), beginning with the last, first, and noticed with each delete by trashcan icon, there was no similar confirmation message as was present higher up in the section when deleting the TOC pages, until the third, forth and fifth from last (intial) pages (as they decrement with each deletion etc.), then the confirmation delete message appeared. I undid the previous deleltions with Cntrl Z, and compared each page looking at the layout etc. (as you suggested), and there is no difference at least visually and object-wise (as displayed) between any of them. So then, why would two (the last two) delete with no content message, and the remaining three have the content message...

Also, once you get that fixed, you will need to clear the floats within the #Body_Area before closing it otherwise it'll collapse to a thin horizontal line.  Do that by adding "overflow:hidden" to the rule for that container.

  • Please help me with this weird project.

    Dear all:
I've got this project to make a chm file. The project consists of five child projects, and some topics within the master project itself. (see the first figure below) I didnt do anything to the project, just want to generate it. But after i generate the project and open the generated CHM file. It looks nothing like the TOC in the project. (see the second figure below). The CHM file has a bunch of contents that are not shown in the TOC, and none of the child projects are included.
As i check those "bunch of contents", they are actually the topics in the master projects under the HTML files folder.
So can anyone help me with these problems? I'm using RH8.
    p.s.
    1. The project seems like a combination of old version of RH and FM. Outside the folders of robohelp project files, there are some **.fm and **.book files.i'm not sure how they are related to what i need to do with the project.
    2. I open the project in the following weird way:
    a. Extract the rar file of the whole project files. Open the project by double clicking the "**.hhp" file.
    b. By doing this, I got the "**.xpj" file. But the original TOC becomes blank. The "HHC" file is 0kb.
    c. So i re-extract the files, the new HHC file replaces the blank one.
    d. Open the master project by doule clicking "**.hhp" file. And the TOC is shown, as in the figure above.
    Thanks!

Thanks a lot for your reply.
    To answer your questions:
    1. "I am assuming there was no XPJ otherwise why use the HHP"
Yes, i only see HHP file. Any consequence by opening the project with this? Well, the consequence so far i see is the blank TOC.
    2. "This was all done previously in RH? "
I'm not sure and i dont think so. The following softwares are needed for the project before. So can you explain to me anything i have to pay attention to?
    - Adobe FrameMaker 7.0
    - WebWorks Publisher 7.05
    - Microsoft HTML Help Workshop 1.3
    - Adobe Acrobat 4.05 or later
    - Microsoft FrontPage 98 or later
    3. "Maybe you have generated to other folders and not placed copies all in one folder."
I did what you say, and get the right result.
One thing that i'm quite curious is that besides the child projects, there are some topics in the parent project that are not shown in the project TOC but in the generated CHM file, like "Apperance" shown in the figure within my first post.

Video helps but please also post text as not everyone will click on a link with no further information. I half expected a bad site.
The problem the poster is having is that when they click on Search tab and then go back to TOC, then the TOC is blank until they hide the pane and then click TOC again.
What we don't know from the thread or the video is the version of Rh or the version of the browser. Also does this happen in other browsers?

  • Browser support for RoboHelp 9 WebHelp / not working on IE7

Does Adobe have an official list of what browsers are compatible with RH9's WebHelp?
My output works fine on IE9, but in IE7 the TOC is blank and the search doesn't work.

I'm not sure what it is in my reply that you are referring to when you say "News to me" or are you just passing on some information you have just found?
As with IE7, Chrome should also work with RoboHelp 9 generated output provided it is on a web server. Whilst you may not have to support Chrome, it does seem odd that browser is also not working.

  • How to make a blank TOC.

The TOC won't let me leave it blank.** The elements in the template are not delete-able.
I want to get rid of it because my picture book opens up with thumbnails of the pages (in the TOC) instead of full sized pages.  Is there a fix for this?
    **Referring to your comment:
"Crafting a chapter-less book is possible, but a minimum of one section is required. Remove the chapeter lbl, leave the TOC blank and then you'll have a basic/generic point from which to work with. Use the 'File/Save As Template' menu before modyfying further if you want to reuse later, etc."

  • Blank TOC with a red "X" / Java errors

    Everyone,
I've been asked to troubleshoot a problem with a build,
actually a series of builds in a WebHelp project, built in RH X5 on
    Windows XP.
The project contains about 7 different builds, with
conditional expressions (LOTS of them) in each one. The builds
displayed correctly at one time, but they don't now. I had to dig
through an archive folder and went back to September 2006 to find a
build that displayed correctly. I'm doing more research on that,
    but that's another issue.
Anyway, when opened any output created in 2007 or 2008, the
TOC pane displays a red "X", that, when clicked on, displays a
"Java Console" option, which in turn lists the following errors

I'm not able to view the Index or Search - the build is
"frozen" on this blank TOC pane with the starting topic. In
Firefox, the TOC is fine, but the Index and Search display "weird"
I tried rebuilding the output on my PC, with the same result.
I even closed the project, deleted the CPD file, reopened the
project, got the same result. I even deleted all of the subfolders
under SSL, then regenerated one of the corrupted outputs - same
result. I have NO problems creating new help projects on my own PC,
I just can't seem to do anything (or properly view) this help
    project's output.
I'm thinking it's an issue with IE (maybe Java?), but the
last time we stated that theory to our support organization, they
ignored us and gave us a band aid solution. My Java runtime is
1.5.0_06 but other people have 1.5.0_11 and they have the same
issue - they all see the red "X".
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jim

  • TOC blank in RH8

    I am using RH8.0.2.208.
I think I've seen this issue reported before, but since the search function on this forum is currently unavailable, I can't find it.
I renamed my TOC in the Project Manager.  When I open it in RH, it is blank.  When I open the .hhc file in a text editor, all of the content is there.  I tried renaming it back to the original name, but no luck.  The .xpj file seems to be pointing at the correct name.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Dave

The problem was fixed by "loading the TOC".
    To recap:
I opened the TOC in RoboHelp, and the frame was blank.  The .hhc file itself contained all of the information when viewed in a text editor.
I clicked on the "Table of Contents" virtual folder in the RH Project Manager, and a message "Loading the table of contents" was quickly displayed.  The TOC frame then displayed the information.  (I was actually clicking to see if any other options were available....for example, "import" or something along those lines, when this message was displayed.)
To double-check, I closed and reopened the project, and all is well now.
I'm not sure why this problem should have happened in the first place, but I am satisfied that it seems to be working now.
    Regards,
    Dave

  • Blank paragraph at end of automatically generated TOC

When generating a Table of Contents InDesign CS4, the TOC text has two blank paragraphs at the end of the generated TOC story. There are no empty paragraphs in any of the stories in the documents that the TOC is being generated from. Is this a bug?

I don't know if it's a bug, but it's been around for a long time.
Yeah. And it can cause text to become unnecessarily overset when

  • Blank TOC and Search Bar

What would cause the TOC and top Search bar in the Flash Help

I've search the KB and internet and can't find anything. Is it
something to do with Flash Settings? IE? Has anyone experiened the

What version of RH? Are there any special characters or

the project (File > Rename Project).
In previous threads, when I've suggested enabling the file

  • ToC, Index, Search appearing blank in RH8 Webhelp

Hello - I have been reviewing the forum questions and answers for about a year now - some great advice - but I can't seem to find an answer to my current problem, so I need to post it here.
I have recently upgraded our help system from RH7 to RH8. I generated Webhelp this week and all was well on my local system in both IE7 and FF3. The long list of every possible number and letter which was appearing in FF in the search column had disappeared and search was behaving exactly as I hoped. Nothing else looked anything other than perfect.
I made the submission to our engineering team and when it was integrated, I tested again. IE remains fine, but in FF, we get the "welcome" page, but an empty column where the ToC should appear. Same with the index - I can enter a keyword, but I get no results. Ditto for search.
Our test and production environments are different, obviously, than my local environment - I put the Webhelp output on an Apache server and all was well. It only breaks when it goes into the production environment.
I was told to tell you that our Apache server does a rewrite rule to Weblogic (9.2.3) - where, with the exception of the UGLY search results in FF from the RH7 Webhelp, all worked well with RH7 output. Our environment hasn't changed, so we believe that we may need to change something in a config file to accommodate changes in RH8. ( We made the changes to UTF-8 as recommended in earlier posts some months ago.)
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Marla

    Hi again
For the Adobe forums search, I find you have to search twice. The first search shouldl bring back some results. What you want is to get to the initial results page.
Click the image below to see at full size.
Now you see a different page.
Again, click the image to see at full size.

  • TOC and Index entries sometimes blank in WebHelp output

I'm running RoboHelp 10, generating Help files using the WebHelp target.
Sometimes, in the WebHelp output, clicking a Table of Contents or Index entry restults with a bank topic. This issue is resolved my either maximizing/minimizing the screen or by refreshing the browser.
The issue does not happen consistently in the output. As well, it seems to only happen in Internet Explorer 10.
Is there a work-around for this issue?

Just installing the patches is not enough. Adobe release some smaller
