Tomcat and Structs: welcome-file

Dear all,
With tomcat 5.0, 5.5, I defined the welcome file in web.xml as
<welcome-file-list>
<welcome-file>/login.show.do</welcome-file>
</welcome-file-list>
It did work.
But if I put
<welcome-file-list>
<welcome-file>/login.show.do</welcome-file>
</welcome-file-list>
It did not work.
Are there any explanation/solution/workround?
Regards,
PY
PS: With Weblogic 8.0, there is no this kind of limitation.

Sorry. Let me correct my question as follows:
Dear all,
With tomcat 5.0, 5.5, I defined the welcome file in

<welcome-file>/login.jsp</welcome-file>
</welcome-file-list>
It works.
But if I put
<welcome-file-list>
<welcome-file>/login.show.do</welcome-file>
</welcome-file-list>
It does not work.

  • Tomcat and missing XML file

    I created a console app that creates an xml file from another class file. Works fine. Now I created a JSP page which calls that class file and creates the xml document. When I read back the contents of the XML file, it shows up fine in my JSP. But I have no idea where that XML file was created/saved??? Does Tomcat store these XML files in memory??
    In my class, I create the XML file with the following code:
    private static File file = new File("courses.xml");
    I searched my harddrive and couldn't find a courses.xml file with the correct data.
    Can anyone explain to me what is going on here? How can I create an XML file which doesn't exist on my harddrive?

    Is Tomcat running on your computer? Or is it running on another comp?
    Just to be sure you know, Tomcat will create the file on the server's hard drive, ie where Tomcat is installed, not the client harddisk, ie the browser.
    If you are running Tomcat on your computer and can not find the file still, perhaps some code would help...

  • Welcome-file to point to file in directory

    Hi,
    I'm having trouble getting my servlet to launch the correct file from startup. I have a .vm file located at:
    /WEB-INF/pages/teaser.vm
    and in my web.xml file, I put:
    <welcome-file-list>
    <welcome-file>/pages/teaser.vm</welcome-file>
    </welcome-file-list>
    This ends up showing the directory structure of my project.
    I even tried using
    <welcome-file-list>
    <welcome-file>/WEB-INF/pages/teaser.vm</welcome-file>
    </welcome-file-list>
    which just says "resource can not be found"
    But if I put teaser.vm outside the WEB-INF folder and use:
    <welcome-file-list>
    <welcome-file>teaser.vm</welcome-file>
    </welcome-file-list>
    then it shows up... I don't want to have to do this, however, since I would like to keep my directory structure as clean as possible.

    nvermind, i got it to work by placing the directory outside of the WEB-INF folder... I guess i'm too new at this stuff ^_^"'

  • Welcome file and Jsp compiled

    Hi,
    I have very problems with compiled JSP. I work with tomcat 4.0.1.
    1) When I compile JSP with jspc and -webapp option and -webinc,
    he creates a file xml as :
         <servlet>
    <servlet-name>.hdi_0005faideResolveur</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>.hdi_0005faideResolveur</servlet-class>

    <url-pattern>/jsp/Pastel/doc/hdi_aideResolveur.jsp</url-pattern>
         </servlet-mapping>
    It don't work. I need to modify "-class>." in "-class>".
    Is it normal ?????????
    2) In web.xml, I have define a welcome-file as :
    <welcome-file-list>
    <welcome-file>/jsp/Pastel/hdi_index.jsp</welcome-file>
    </welcome-file-list>
    When I work in un-compile Jsp, It's work well.
    But, with compile-jsp, it don't' work. I have tried :

    <welcome-file>servlet/.hdi_0005findex</welcome-file>

    What I understood from your problem is that you want the root context to redirect to your application. For example, if you open tomcat main application (which ran from ROOT context) you want it to redirect it to your application. Right?
    The safest way is already recommended in an earlier post. What you do is,
    1. Open your application (e.g. http://localhost:8080/myapplication/index.jsp)
    2. go to the tomcat ROOT folder (C:\tomcat5520\webapps\ROOT).
    3. Locat index.jsp file
    4. Edit the file and replace the complete code with <jsp:forward page="myapplication/index.jsp">
    5. Save and close the application and check the tomcat root context. (http://localhost:8080/)
    Hope it helps.

  • 8.1 EE can't find page and appends the welcome-file name to the url

    I have a problem where you enter a url that points to a static file in the xxxEar-WebModule_war directory. That is the "docroot" directory for the application. Somewhere along the line the welcome-file (index.html) is appended to the url. For example I enter http://server.com/app/file.xml and it gets changed to http://server.com/app/file.xml/index.html, which is not found.
    This was not a problem in 8.1 platform. Now that we upgraded to 8.1 enterprise it is a problem.
    All urls that are mapped to servlets work fine. I just can't seem to access static content.
    Thanks!

  • WAR files (Tomcat) and deployment descriptor

    Hello,
    I am currently writing a small utility to package a web application for Jakarta Tomcat as a .war file.
    I have a functional version that imports the deployment descriptor web.xml, but I'd like to make it possible for the user to edit or create from scratch that file. I use the DOM API to make a logical model of my web.xml, but the parser won't accept the external dtd definition :
    <!DOCTYPE web-app
    PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.2//EN"
    "http://java.sun.com/j2ee/dtds/web-app_2_2.dtd">
    Here is my parser :
    private void parse(File in) {
    try {
    DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
    factory.setNamespaceAware(true);
    factory.setValidating(true);
    DocumentBuilder builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder();
    document = builder.parse(in); (((*)))
    catch (...)
    }//parse
    ---------------------------------------------It seems I have no further controls on DocumentBuilder and DocumentBuilderFactory.
    The builder.parse call generates this exception :

    at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.socketConnect(Native Method)
    at org.apache.crimson.parser.Resolver.resolveEntity(Resolver.java:389)The problem seems to be located in DOM's DefaultHandler entity resolver, but I don't ee clearly what to do.
    Thanks for helping.

    I already tried every combination of settings with

  • Write file into sever--tomcat and jsp

    i have some .jsp file and run on tomcat 3.2.4, it works well nomally.
    in my programming i want to write some file or make some dir in sever. but i once to do that , the xxx.jsp will not be found in the sever. 404 error message will be throwen.
    by the way, i make all the .jsp into war and put .war into tomcat-home/webapps/.
    and if i change the port number 8080 into 8004, i can write something into 8004 but no 8080..
    any ideas

    Firstly, when you write the file out you need to find the web context base directory and extend the file reference from there.
    In your jsp you need code like this...
    String baseDir = this.getServletContext().getRealPath("/");
    File webRootDirectory = new File(baseDir);
    // Assuming the target directory exists, otherwise create it....
    File targetFile = new File(webRootDirectory, "mynew.jsp");
    // Open a stream and write to your hearts content into it, after you close it it will be available to be requestedApplication Servers can and often do disallow the writing of files etc via a security policy file so you often have to check that and adjust the security policy accordingly.

  • Welcome-file and browser redirects

    When the welcome-file mechanism in the web.xml configuration is used, the server returns a 302 redirect to the browser. Is there a way to have the request forwarded on the server instead? There are some browsers, like the Go.America browser, which don't appear to handle the 302 return code.
              Thanks...
              Steve...

    Hi.
              See the answer to the next thread (Hide the default page (index.jsp) from the url) for insight. We don't claim to support the Go.America browser(we support netscape and IE), but what you ask is not unreasonable for other reasons. If this is an important issue for you you might want to open a
              case with support.

    This might help:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=696586
    As well, you might have to change the servlet-mapping in your web.xml. The url-pattern, I think, needs to be .xhtml. Your login.jsf file in the welcome list will need to be renamed to login.xhtml.

  • How to chage the welcome file in web.xml using creator?

    Hi guys,
    I want to set the welcome file in web.xml to index.html but every time I run my project in creator, creator replaces index.html by faces/index.jsp. I need the index.html to check if the browser enables cookies & javascript and then I redirect to index.jsp. If I change the web.xml in a common editor, build the war-file with ant and deploy the project with tomcat, everything is fine. but how can I change it in creator?
    thanks in advance

    Sorry, that doesn't make much sense.
    The XML you gave is a configuration file for txt2xml utility. It doesn't represent the output format.
    Are you a user of this utility?

  • Welcome file usage: can it be any URL?

    Hi,
    Do welcome-files have to always be concrete files such as .html or .jsp files? I am finding that when using Tomcat 4.0.1, if I specify a servlet mapping as a welcome file, I end up getting a directory listing.
    For example, since I am using Struts, I have specified a Struts action as my welcome-file, but Tomcat seems to ignore this altogether and I end up getting a directory listing. If I request the action directly, then I have no problems.
    Has anyone faced any similar issues?
    Regards,
    Steve

    Hi,
    I am also running into the same issue.
    Did you get any workaround?
    Please let know,

    <!-- optionally map the 'MyServlet' servlet to a URL pattern -->
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>MyServlet</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>/myservlet</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    <!-- rest of web.xml ... -->
    Then create a welcome-file element in web.xml that specifies the registered servlet name.
    <welcome-file-list>
    <welcome-file>MyServlet</welcome-file>
    <welcome-file>default.jsp</welcome-file>
    </welcome-file-list>
    Make sure to use the servlet name in the welcome-file element without a forward slash (/) preceding it.
    Poppycock I say. At least it's not working for me with either Tomcat 5 or Tomcat 5.5. Has anyone out there ever seen this work on Tomcat?

    It most certainly is possible now, but wasn't until rather late in TC 5.0.xx series I believe (5.0.18 or so?). You can chack the change logs to id exactly when...
    But the reason it isn't working for you is you have to match the value in your <welcome-file> to the URL in the servlet's <url-pattern> servlet mapping. So your web XML should look like this:
    <servlet>
      <servlet-name>MyServlet</servlet-name.
      <servlet-class>com.jspservletcookbook.MyServlet</servlet-class>
    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
      <servlet-name>MyServlet</servlet-name>
      <url-pattern>/myservlet</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    <welcome-file-list>
      <welcome-file>myservlet</welcome-file>
      <welcome-file>default.jsp</welcome-file>
    </welcome-file-list>Your porblem was case. Your url-pattern had lower case, but the welcome-file had upper case letters like the servlet name.
    Here is an example app that I tested and worked:
    //The servlet:
    package net.thelukes.steven;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.io.PrintWriter;
    import javax.servlet.ServletException;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse;
    public class WelcomeServlet extends HttpServlet {
         public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response)
           throws ServletException, IOException {
              PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
              out.println("Hello World");
              out.flush();
              out.close();
    //the web.xml
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <web-app id="WebApp_ID" version="2.4"
             xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee"
             xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
             xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee
                                 http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee/web-app_2_4.xsd">
         <display-name>WTPTest</display-name>
         <servlet>
              <servlet-name>Welcome</servlet-name>
              <servlet-class>net.thelukes.steven.WelcomeServlet</servlet-class>
         </servlet>
         <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>Welcome</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>/welcome</url-pattern>
         </servlet-mapping>
         <welcome-file-list>
              <welcome-file>welcome</welcome-file>
         </welcome-file-list>
    </web-app>
    //The address I typed (the web app is names WTPTest
    http://localhost:8080/WTPTest
    //The HTML Output
    Hello World
