Tools 8.50 on Debian / Ubuntu

Hi,
Has anyone tried installing tools 8.50 on a debian / ubuntu system?
  ( yes, I know this is not supported )
  ( yes, I know I could use Oracle Enterprise Linux )
Oracle, WebLogic and Tuxedo all seem to run ok, so if I can get the database loaded it should all be good, yes? But I'm having problems with the installer, and it looks a bit like some kind of shell issues.
First attempt:
  $ . psconfig.sh
  $ chmod +x setup/PsMpDbInstall/InstData/setup.linux
  $ setup/PsMpDbInstall/setup.sh
This runs through the first few sql scripts (very quickly) as far as connect.sql, but then falls over with a "File not found: .../scripts/hr91dmoora.dms" script (HR91DMO is the SID/database). However, looking at the log files, none of the sql scripts actually ran. They all fell over with "sqlplus: command not found", despite entering the correct path for the sqlplus binary when prompted.
Second attempt:
  $ export ORACLE_HOME=/opt/oracle/dbhome1
  $ export ORACLE_SID=HR91DMO
  $ PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
  $ . psconfig.sh
  $ chmod +x setup/PsMpDbInstall/InstData/setup.linux
  $ setup/PsMpDbInstall/setup.sh
This time the runCreatedb10.sh script runs for a while, but the installer gives "Error while creating database", and stops. Checking the log file shows no errors:
  Database created.
  SQL> spool off
  SQL> exit
  Disconnected from Oracle Database 11g Release 11.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production
So it looks like there are some kind of shell problems: variables not being set / passed to other scripts; exit codes being incorrectly interpreted.
  $ /bin/sh --version
  GNU bash, version 3.2.48(1)-release (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu)
  Copyright (C) 2007 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
If anyone has any thoughts on this, I'd love to hear them. Otherwise, it looks like the manual, run-them-all-by-hand approach!
Cheers,
Barney

Ok, so there were a couple of problems:
1. I had some old deprecated commands in my init.ora file. These caused Oracle warnings in the create script, which Oracle ignored and happily created the database, but the PeopleSoft installation script barfed on. Was nothing to do with shell processing at all. Cleaning these up sorted that out.
2. Then needed to set a couple of Tuxedo environment settings for Data Mover to run. Should have guessed this from "Data Mover on the UNIX platform has a dependency on the Oracle Tuxedo software." Unfortunately, these aren't really documented until chapter 8 of the installation guide, whereas I was still on chapter 7B. What - you want me to read all 700+ pages before starting... ;-)
So looking good now. Installing the HRMS data (is it HRMS or HRCS???), then just a couple more steps to go. Only 14822 records remaining...

Since you're on a non-supported OS, it would be better to follow the manual database creation steps.Yep - I did start to go down that route, but then I was writing my own script to automate things to make it repeatable, and it all just seemed better to try and get the delivered ones to work. Also, unless I'm missing something here, steps in an appendix entitled "Creating a Database Manually on UNIX" which refer to " Setting NLS_LANG in the Windows Registry" just confuse me!
[Jim]
can you put up a wiki describing the stepsSure. Never actually added anything to a wiki before, but sure I can get something up there. Will post back here when something's there.
Cheers,

  • [SOLVED]How to show/retain systemd messages like in Debian/Ubuntu?

    So I'm just in vanilla install, nothing fancy. But I see that there were very few systemd messages at boot, only fsck's at partitions, unlike in Debian/Ubuntu where it shows everything? How do I make it like that?

    Ok. I'll try that, ty.
    WonderWoofy wrote:If you have an SSD though the messages in the beginning can actually slow your boot down.  All the necessary debug info will be in your journal (logs) anyway, and any emerg, alter, crit, err, or warn messages in the kernel ring buffer (the crap that dmesg outputs) will additionally be pushed to the console anyway.
    I don't use an SSD, I think. But thanks for the tip, I'll keep that in mind.

  • Debian/ubuntu user: Arch on older laptop?

    I'm not new to Linux, having been running it full time at home for 5 or 6 years. At the same time, I don't really consider myself a power user: I'm a computer hobbyist and don't work in the computer or tech job sector. I started off with Mandrake, Redhat, and Slack variants, but moved to Debian once I figured out and could appreciate the packaging system. Then, I went with Ubuntu once it came out.
    I've looked at Arch over the years and wanted to try it out. One of the reasons it has appealed to me is because it seems better optimized for the hardware I'm using (usually older x86 stuff). Have I understood correctly about Arch being optimized for that sort of hardware? In any case, I will get an older laptop soon and this seems like it might be a great opportunity to give Arch a try.
    The laptop is a Toshiba Portege with 300 Mhz Celeron CPU, 6GB HD, and 96 MB RAM. I thought about putting a barebones Ubuntu on it and sort of building up needed software from scratch (I've done the same several times over the years with both Debian and Ubuntu). But I really thing this system's resources are borderline for Ubuntu--even if it's a minimalist installation (lightweight WM, limited # of apps and running services, etc). Anyone disagree that this laptop might be a good target for an Arch installation?
    One hitch with installing the OS on this laptop is that it has neither a CD nor a floppy drive. I would get around that in Debian/Ubuntu by simply removing the HD, sticking it in another system that does have a CD, doing a sort of base install, then moving the drive back into the laptop to finish up the installation over the 'net. I presume a similar tack could be taken with an Arch install, correct? Any particular tips given that installation strategy?
    I think I'll close out this series of remarks on that note. If I actually go ahead with Arch I'll undoubtedly be posting more in this thread and on your forums. Responses will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    James

    The current ftp iso has been causing problems for some users, from what I've read on the forums (some issue with permission settings on the /tmp folder).  Core ISO is a safe bet -- this is what I normally use.  The only "problem" with the core iso, compared to the ftp iso, is that the ftp iso auto-configures network during installation and these settings are preserved in the installed version; the core iso simply puts some default values in the network configuration section of /etc/rc.conf -- not a big deal.
    A general note -- a new set of isos is about to be released, it should be no more than a few days now...  It shouldn't really make a difference, in the end, your system will be brought up to date on the first pacman -Syu in either case.

  • Workstation 11.1, Tools 9.9.2 build-2496486: Not compatible with GCC 5.1.0 on linux (Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, etc)

    First, there are some compilation problems with the latest linux kernel and Tools 9.9.2's source of vmhgfs: vmhgfs module not compilable for VMware Tools 9.9.0 (Fusion7.1) after Ubuntu Linux kernel update to 3.13.0-46-generic (Febr. 2015) (Shared Folder Feature not working in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Guest) on MacOSX Yosemite (Host))?
    In short, you have to patch the source to get it to compile: rasa/vmware-tools-patches · GitHub
    Arch linux is a "rolling" distro, meaning we always have latest - and are usually the first to find problems before it trickles down to Ubuntu, Mint, Debian and other Linux distros. Well, now there is a serious problem that is unresolvable.
    The vmhgfs source is not compatible with linux kernels built with gcc 5.1.0.  It hard locks the VM, requiring a hard reset when the kernel module loads.  It also hard locks during vmware-tools-install.pl torwards the very end when it says, "Guest filesystem driver" enabling.  And on boot, it is vmhgfs that is being loaded when the VM hard locks.
    I was able to get around this earlier when gcc 4.9.2 was in core - i just rebuilt the kernel under 4.9.2: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=196915
    Obviously that isn't a long-term solution.  But now that gcc 5.1.0 has been pushed out to core, that means recompiling the kernel under 4.9.2 is no easy feat since dependencies now depend on gcc 5.1.0.
    @Developers: We have a big problem with VMware Tools vmhgfs and kernels compiled under gcc 5.1.0.  Given it make take years before the Debian distros get the latest and greatest, it's coming.
    Because of this, and the wasted time in me having to support this mess, I may recommend to my company we no longer continue with our Enterprise account of 100 licenses of Workstation and Fusion.  It is obvious in the previous thread vmhgfs module not compilable for VMware Tools 9.9.0 (Fusion7.1) after Ubuntu Linux kernel update to 3.13.0-46-generic (Febr. 2015) (Shared Folder Feature not working in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Guest) on MacOSX Yosemite (Host))? that VMware is no hurry to resolve even the simple build errors that the community has resolved last year with patches.  Good thing too, renewal comes up in two months.
    I shiver to think how long it will take VMware to release a fix for gcc 5.1.0.

    Additional info...
    The hard lock is a panic when mounting the /mnt/hgfs partition, which is what is configured in my fstab:
    .host:/
    /mnt/hgfs
    vmhgfs
    defaults
    0 0
    The reason the above is just "./host:/" is for the auto-mounting of shares on the fly, or all shares on boot.  Specifying a share doesn't change anything.
    Even mounting it manually panic's the kernel:
    mount -n -t vmhgfs .host:/<shared_folder> /home/user1/shares
    Again, this all worked fine with a kernel built on 4.9.2, but not 5.1.0.

  • Finding debian/ubuntu dependencies' Arch counterparts.

    I'm trying to port Linux Mint tools to Arch packages, but I have a small problem with dependency management. The names of dependencies in Ubuntu/Debian are different than in Arch. I was wondering if somebody could help me with figuring out what packages contain what. Here's the dependency list from the "control" file in the source for mintUpload:
    Depends: python (>= 2.5), python (<< 3), python-paramiko (>= 1.7.4), python-gtk2, python-glade2, python-pexpect, mint-common
    I figured out that I don't need mint-common since it's just a meta package, and all it includes are scripts to set the mint defaults (firefox as default browser, etc.) and the mint logo. So what I put in the PKGBUILD is this:
    depends=('python' 'python-paramiko' 'gnome-python-desktop' 'pygtk' 'python-pexpect')
    When I start mintUpload, however, I get this:
    $ mintupload
    /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/Crypto/Hash/SHA.py:6: DeprecationWarning: the sha module is deprecated; use the hashlib module instead
    from sha import *
    /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/Crypto/Hash/MD5.py:6: DeprecationWarning: the md5 module is deprecated; use hashlib instead
    from md5 import *
    You do not have all the dependencies!
    Am I missing a dependency?

  • Microserver G7 N54L - Support for Debian/Ubuntu

    I just ordered a G7 N54L and ideally I would like to run Debian on it. I heard different stories about support in various forum especially an issue about fan speed (bad regulation under Debian whereas it works fine under CentOs or ESXI) . I would like to have feedback from somewone who is running Debian on this specific hardware: is all hardware perfectly supported out of the bos? Did you need any special firmware installation? Is Debian still not at par with CentOs?
    In case Debian is not perfectly supported I will install it as a VM through ESXI, if someone already did this, can you please give feedback about potential performance issue. (I will upgrade the RAM to 8 Go)

    I want to use the hardware counter under a x86-64 Ubuntu (Feisty). But the system isn't supported by the performance analyzer and the hardware counter aren't available. Exist any opportunity to use it or should i install red hat enterprise or suse enterprise. Gives there any free OS where the HW counters working?

  • Laptop-mode-tools fixes and improvements

    I have been in contact with the autor of laptop-mode-tools and new version is coming some time next month or maybe even in March. So I decided to share my tweaks because some things are broken right now and some need improvements.
    There are some modules I don't use and so didn't notice any problems with them, if there are any (lcd-brightness, video-out and those for which I don't have suitable hardware like cpufreq, iwl/ipw and sched-mc).
    Alright then, first is the problem with systems where the battery doesn't report events and has no alarm support on which the auto-hibernate module depends. There is a script from gentoo-wiki which is quite popular among people with lousy batteries. It would be great if the package manager would take care of it for us. Author of laptop-mode-tools also said (on debian lists) that such script could be included in future versions, for now the common "solution" is to create a cronjob that calls /usr/sbin/laptop_mode every few minutes. I don't quite like it compared to the gentoo script. For now I include the script in the package as /usr/sbin/battery_mode and call it from rc.local on boot.
    Currently there is a module called ac97-powersave that controls power management on those sound cards. Intel HDA sound cards also support this and in the future versions a module them will probably be included. For now I patch the ac97-powersave module to include the support for Intel HDA.
    Bluetooth module removes bluetooth and hci_usb modules when disabling the device. However on my system it's not enough to completly turn it off. For now I patch the bluetooth module to include rfkill support. Only then the system reports a USB disconnect and the LED goes off. The default path in the patch is for my acer system with acer-wmi rfkill support.
    Due to w differences the dpms-standby module is broken on many systems. The module uses xset and arguments are piped from the command w -hs where the third field is supposed to be DPMS_SCREEN but it's actually IDLE time, so xset command fails because the argument passed to xset -d is something like 4:54. On Debian/Ubuntu they went around this by including this in their acpi-support package. I didn't bother to see what they actually did, to backport it. It should be done in future laptop-mode-tools anyway. For now I just hardcode the display value for my single-user/one-X-screen system in the dpms-standby module.
    Due to a simple mistake LM_VERBOSE was broken. Meaning that none of those informative status messages from laptop-mode-tools were logged when VERBOSE LOGGING was enabled. Only the output of called commands was logged. For now I fix this in the build process.
    Speaking of logging, default output for verbose is /dev/stdout, and I would like to log everything to a file. So I modify it in the build process to log everything to /var/log/laptop-mode.log, and also include a logrotate script in the package. With the above fix I have a complete and informative log file.
    It's not a bad idea to stop/restart laptop-mode-tools when suspending, so a pm-utils hook is helpful. Arch PKGBUILD already includes installing pm-utils support but it's actually pbbuttonsd/pmud support and not pm-utils. Such a script/hook could one day be included in laptop-mode-tools however there is/was a debate going if it's their job to provide it. I read somewhere that Ubuntu already provides such script/hook but I'm not sure if it's provided by acpi-support or laptop-mode-tools package. For now I wrote my own pm-utils hook and I include it in the build process.
    Powertop suggests usbcore.autosuspend=1 sysctl, but it would be nice if we have all this power management control in one place. Usb-autosuspend module will be included in future versions of laptop-mode-tools, but for now someone wrote a module and posted it to the Debian bug tracker. I keep the module and configuration in my build dir but don't include it in the final package for now. I'll wait a bit and see how things will develop.
    To help you start hacking on laptop-mode-tools you can take a look at all the above patches and my PKGBUILD. Every step is documented in PKGBUILD comments, and please do check them because some things I patch but some I modify inline with sed. I also don't install acpid handlers and before mentioned false pm-utils support... everything is commented: http://sysphere.org/~anrxc/local/softwa … ode-tools/

    Hello,
    this was one year ago, and I helped the author improve these things. Today I don't have to patch my laptop-mode-tools... (I still do with some minor things, but that's just to satisfy some personal preferences . Use the arch package, even the battery polling helper is included.

  • [Solved] Debian Packaging/Repository

    Hello. I have tried arch in the past, and LOVED it, but I had to leave for that which is unnecessary to explain. So lets get on with the matter at hand. I will be the repository manager for bAdGigabit (Hopefully, In a few months when we get going with it.). A manly iDevice centric community. We maintain a Repository for Cydia, The alternative to the App Store. A Place where you can modify your iPhone, outside the scope of an "App". (Google "barrel 2", "iconoclasm", "initsua", "bAdGB"). Cydia, is infact a front end for the APT front end to Dpkg. Thus, we have to have a Debian style Repository. To manage and Build it, I require the Debian and iphone-os Tool Chains. iphone-os Tool chain resides on the Iphone itself, no need to port it. As for the Debian Repository Tool Chain, That is a must. To be able to build deb's, manage deb's and keep the repository up to date on a daily, if not hourly, basis.
    Infact I have a daily cron job set to search a directory on my computer, look for any .deb's and add them to the repository. This directory is also in the same directory my Dropbox folder, and allows me to update it from school if need be be "cp ~/Dropbox ~/Repo" (Not the actual command, just a stand in)
    Now with this information in your grasp, let me ask the obvious question that you all know is comming. Is there a way to do this on Arch. To have the entire debian packaging system at my disposal, or am I stuck with Linux Mint (UGH).
    Finnaly, failing that, Is there an Arch Linux-Like distribution that is based on Debian/Ubuntu available?

    I ran Gentoo for a while, I tend to build everything from source anyway, Building from source it routine for me. As for the Virtual machine, I find them very slow, and trying to run that Cron job would be very tricky. The script itself would need sleep times, Be bug filled, and subject to the crashes and whims of a Virtualbox.
    Also, I only have 2GB of RAM. I do not like the idea of sharing that and killing performance.

  • Ubuntu "*-dev" package equivalent for Arch?

    I'm just trying Arch for the first time, migrating from Ubuntu. I'm trying to set up as equivalent a system as I can, software-wise, from a list I kept of of key packages I installed on Ubuntu.
    One thing Ubuntu does (for those unfamiliar with it) is the developers create a package with the compiled/configured binary, and sometimes they also create a development package to be used by other applications that rely on the original package. Ie, you might have "libgtk2.0" and "libgtk2.0-dev", which you usually install separately.
    What's the equivalent of the Ubuntu "*-dev" packages on Arch?

    Ubuntu devs separate them because that's how Debian does it, and it would be a waste of time to reintegrate them again, and it would be messy to not do it for the packages they build themselves but keep the split out headers for the packages they inherit from Debian.
    Debian splits them up for the reason you said though . Without Debian, Ubuntu wouldn't be where it is today. People tend to forget that.

  • A Linux version fo Mozilla Firefox 6 Start Page states "The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded." - Why?

    Hi, My Linux Mint (a Debian/Ubuntu flavor) when first seen, the Mozilla Firefox 6 Start Page was great. However, when moving away to other sites and then clicking home the response was Alert - "The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded." Having trying everything (apart from using a large club!) I am lost. Any suggestions team? Mark

    Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    *Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • Pickin a linux server for work

    hey all!  my workplace is pretty windows centric, and we're deciding to slowly move towards linux and linux dev tools to save costs in licensing (cuz gcc kicks butt!)
    anyways, here's the criteria i need
    1) security
    2) stability
    3) support
    my co-workers do not know much about linux works, just a general idea.  i have to option of choosing whichever distro i deem best.  so far, my options include fedora, debian, ubuntu, slackware, arch.
    this is a standard server that i will be running.  so...subversion, apache, ssh, mysql, standard stuff, so package availability is not a problem.
    what do you guys think have having arch run as the server?  it seems like the bleeding-edgeness of arch but not make it a viable choice as a stable server.  but then again, i don't want it outdated like debian stable.
    i just tried installing ubuntu on my test system.  first let me give props to all the arch developers.  you really don't appreciate the beauty of arch until you get to see how many less steps are required to compile your own kernel and install it using the package manager.  nonetheless, i haven't had anything wrong happen with ubuntu.  although i am worried about the potential problems when i try to do a dist-upgrade (since ubuntu branches off from debian-sid and back in)
    anyways, do you guys have any ideas/suggestions?

    As your most familiar with Arch and Slackware, I would pick one of them.
    The only drawback is if paid support is going to be a big issue.  However, especially if you have  a test machine available, you'll be happiest with what you know, and most comfortable with fixing it when things happen.
    However, elastic dog makes the excellent point--even though consultants are often no more knowledgeable about a subject than you are, it shows you are making best effort--it also makes the bosses more comfortable, which can be important.
    Arch is as or more secure than any of the other choices, simply because it has so few services running by default.  You can use firestarter or something to build a firewall that will be similar to a default RH or SuSE one.
    Arch's advantages are the small base install with an intelligent choice of base packages, and ease of updating.
    The only negative is the lack of "official" support.
    I use Arch at work for some non-mission critical stuff.  I use FreeBSD on some higher end servers, because I am most familiar with it.  However, at times, we need a low end machine to work as a file server on one subnet or another, and at times like that the quick, small install and ease of adding samba with pacman led me to use Arch for those machines.  On the other hand, they're running nothing but samba and they don't really do anything else.
    Another brief Arch success story though--when one of the divisions had to change floors, the FreeBSD box that did DHCP for two floors had to be moved.  I prepared a small box with Arch, which probably took less than an hour from booting with the install CD, and threw it into place

  • [SOLVED] Google Voice and Video plugin

    Cheers,
    I want to use my gmail account to voice/video chat within the browser. There are packages available for debian, ubuntu, fedora and suse and I'm wondering how to install the plugin for arch?
    If this is not possible, could you please point me to an alternative tool / programm?
    TIA,
    Oliver

    Once you familiarize yourself with AUR you may want to automate things like dependency resolution via https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Aur_helpers

    Use 'LC_MESSAGES=C foo' where 'foo' is the command you're executing to get messages printed in English.
    Output for the Polish locale (my default):
    [karol@black ~]$ sudo pacman -Syu
    :: Synchronizowanie baz danych z pakietami...
    core jest już w najnowszej wersji
    extra jest już w najnowszej wersji
    community jest już w najnowszej wersji
    xyne-any jest już w najnowszej wersji
    and now with 'LC_MESSAGES=C':
    [karol@black ~]$ sudo LC_MESSAGES=C pacman -Syu
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    core is up to date
    extra is up to date
    community is up to date
    xyne-any is up to date
