TopLink on WebLogic or oracle.toplink.PersistenceProvider

Hy.
I have applied patch 5KXF to add toplink 11g on WebLogic 10.3.
Now, in BEA_HOME\patch_wls1030\patch_jars\ there is toplink.jar.
But how can I use it?
Inside toplink.jar there is file META-INF\services\META-INF\services\javax.persistence.spi.PersistenceProvider.
I assume that content of this file is the name of the implementation class.
It is "oracle.toplink.PersistenceProvider".
But when I put this name in persistence.xml and try to deploy my EAR, this message appears

We dont want to use the default JPA provider "Toplink *Essentials*" that comes with OC4J. Rather we want to use Oracle Toplink 10.x

How to configure WebLogic to use TopLink?

I am using BEA Workshop to develop a webservice and I am having some issues to make it work. Basically, I am using Toplink plus JAX-WS. The main problem is how to get the EntityManager from the context in order to persist the data into database.
Here is a piece of code, hope it can help to understand the issue:

Configure toplink for weblogic 10.3

I am totally frustrated, please help. I have installed toplink in any path you could imagine, and configure the persistence.install as I saw in google. Could you give me a guide, for silly people, for configuring toplink into weblogic 10.3?

WebLogic Server 10.3 ships with Apache OpenJPA and Kodo as persistence providers to my understanding. Therefore if you want to use TopLink, etc, you'll have to install the TopLink libraries somewhere in your application. APP-INF/lib, WEB-INF/lib or a shared library, etc. Can you expand on "I have installed toplink in any path you could imagine" and detail which jars you've tried to install and where you've tried to put them?

Upgrading from Weblogic 6.1sp5/TopLink 3.6.3 to Weblogic 8.1/TopLink 9.0.4

Hi.
We are doing the migration from Weblogic 6.1sp5/TopLink 3.6.3 to Weblogic 8.1 & TopLink 9.0.4
We have been reading available documentation and started the migration. We have not had any problems with package ranaming issues and XML DOCTYPES changes.
As we do have a lot of ammedmed querys, we do prefer to use a java class as our proyect mapping descriptor rather than a huge XML.
We are currently porting all our querys to the new system.
As we are doing a lot of changes we are also updating our EJB 1.1 entity beans to EJB 2.0 (maybe in the future we will deploy our EJBs with local interfaces too).
The main problem we are facing right now is with all the querys we had in our toplink-cmp-<bean>.xml files. Even if most of the finders are "REDIRECT" querys that had to be ammendmed we have a good number of "EXPRESSION"s on them.
As far as we are able to see we should move them to the TopLink Project java file in the querys section. The question is: is it possible to declare them in the ejb-jar.xml file into the <ejb-ql> tag (we have seen that the TopLinkImplemented string appears on the <ejb-ql> telling the container who should handle the query, so if Weblogic can be "tricked" to do that "ejb-ql" it may be possible to do the same with a TopLink expression isn't it?.
Another issue we don't have clear is if now all the querys must be either ejb-ql (compliant with the EJB 2.0 standard) or named querys (either TopLink expressions or SQL querys) defined in the TopLink Project java or XML files. What happened with the redirect querys
I would like to point just another issue we have "solved" but we are not really satisfied with how we solved it.
We are using timestamp locking with our entity beans. The shouldBindAllParameters is set to true too and we have the logging activated so we have been able to track down the problem.
The problem seems to be something like this.
You create a new entity bean and TopLink issues a sentence like this against the DB (Oracle 8.1.7 I must say we have also configured the login session to use the Oracle8PlatformSupport)
INSERT INTO FOO(OID,OCA) VALUES (?, ?)
bind => [1, 2004-04-26 13:16:45.251]
As far as we know Oracle 8.1.7 doesn't store the milliseconds (we are using DATE type in Oracle tables) so the ".251" value is stored as "0"
Then we try to delete the entity bean and TopLink sends this sentence to the database:
DELETE FROM FOO WHERE ((OID = ? AND OCA = ?))
bind => [1, 2004-04-26 13:16:45.251]
Then, a TOPLINK-5003 (the object has been modified or deleted since last read) is raised and the transaction is rolled back.
We tried without binding and it works perfect (it seems that the timestamp is treated as YYYY-MM-DD SSSSS in the "to_date" function issued)
As we would like to keep with binding all parameters in order to optimize our database accesses we have changed the default jdbc driver (sun.jdbc...) that is showed when reading the proper property of the login sesion with the oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver. This latest driver seems to solve the problem with the reminders of the timestamps but this brings us a doubt.
If we have configured two datasources in our Weblogic's config.xml file (one for transactional operations, beeing that one also an XA driver as we need to coordinate RDBMS operations with a JMS service, and the other one being a "standar" oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver) why is that the driver used as default by the login method is that "weird" sun.jdbc... driver? Shouldn't TopLink use one (the XA driver I hopefully) of the drivers defined in Weblogic's datasource?
1. Is the issue we are seeing with the timestamp a known bug/problem?
2. Is there a better way to solve it than changing the driver (we are affraid of the "new" issues changing it could raise)
I have seen that with TopLink 3.6.3 and the "default" driver used in the login (it is the same by default on both TopLink 3.6.3 and TopLink 9.0.4) the binded timestamp are "truncated" to the second resolution and it works without any problem.

Not sure on all of the issues, but can provide some information on some of them.
Re-directors:
Support was added for re-director to core queries, so now your named queries can make use of re-director if they require advanced dynamic execution. So all re-director queries can become named queries.
Timestamp locking:
In general we would always suggest numeric version locking if you have the choice. I'm not clear on what you are saying about the driver having an effect on the problem, however in general Oracle 8 does not support milliseconds, if you use timestamp locking with local timestamps they will have milliseconds and the database values will not match the ones in memory.
To resolve this you can,
- Use server timestamps TimestampLockingPolicy.useServerTime()
- Clear the timestamp's milli/nano second value through an aboutToInsert event.
- Extend Oracle8Platform.convertObject to clear the timestamp's milli/nano second value.
- If you can use Oracle 9 or 10 there is now a TIMESTAMP type that does support milliseconds.
If a different driver seems to be solving this, it is most likely the database ignores the milliseconds in the comparison, but the driver you are using sends the millisecond to the database incorrectly when binding.

TopLink in WebLogic Server 10

Hi,
does anybody have experience with the use of TopLink in WebLogic Server 10.0?
Wenn I use TopLink as JPA persistence provider, I receive a javax.persistence.TransactionRequiredException ("Exception Description: No transaction is currently active") for every method containing updates.
However, transaction attributes are set correctly, and the same application runs without this
problem if I use Kodo instead of TopLink. The application also runs when using TopLink and OC4J.
Do I have to set something instructing TopLink how to find the transaction manager?
Any help is appreciated.

OK through days of long searching I have found what I believe to be the correct answer that James was hinting at. His link to EclipseLink was what eventually got me there. I already had working code but I wasn't sure WHY it worked. Then I found very similar code to what I'd already done in EclilpseLink source, in the org.eclipse.persistence.transaction.wls.WebLogicTransactionController class.
You need to extend the JPA target server. Here is the persistence.xml snippet:

If you look at the EclipseLink WebLogicTransactionController, you'll see it uses a different JNDI name. I've used the general "javax.transaction.TransactionManager" lookup because I believe this is standard as of Weblogic 10.

Problem getting XA Datasources to work with Toplink inside Weblogic

I am using POJOs inside weblogic 7.1, and I am having some difficulties. Of picked up a jdbc driver called JSQLConnect and it sets up fine from the Weblogic console. This is the only 3rd party XA driver that I have successfully got working inside weblogic.
I've set up the Weblogic datasource in toplink per the documentation/examples I found. I've included a stack trace of where things blow up. From your source code, it looks like the AbstractSynchronizationListener thinks that the unit of work is not active. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Mike

As for your questions, let me address them below:
How are you using XA (e.g. are you talking to two different databases)? Are you using TopLink any differently (e.g. using SessionBroker)? Is your transaction being propagated to multiple servers? What exactly has changed, or have you simply started using a different driver/data source? (Sorry for all the questions, just want to try to hone in on what components we are looking at).
BTW, do transactions ever get started by the client and span multiple server requests?
1) Yep, I am reading from one database, and writing to the other. So its not a two phase commit right now, but we will have one in the future.
2) I'm not using your session broker. We have a framework, where we can get a client session from a named server session. This works pretty well for us. Right now, we are using the same framework to access two databases. I'm just not setting external tx control, session synchornization,etc
3) I can use the third party jdbc driver in a non-XA transaction. So it doesn't seem to be a property of the JDBC driver alone. It seems to be when I attempt to set things up in XA mode.
4) Transactions are controlled at the Session Bean level. They only last for one bean request.
If you have any cycles, I was wondering if you could try getting the XA transaction to work in your environment? I was using Net-Direct's driver, along with Weblogic 7.1 sp1, and Toplink 9.0.3.3 (Build 430). An example of how you got things to work may point out what is different about my useage....

Of course I don't see any problem with it.
After that I tried to run the examples but I'm seing the same error.
I must say that I'm not using the ANT scripts but doing it "by hand" building classes and making the naked jar for the bean in order to run ejbc on it, I'm pretty confident I am not missing anything.
I would like to know where the "ejbql-call" definition is as I have tried to find it with a grep in all the Toplink structure tree with no success. It is not clear to me how the xsd processor would find it's definition with just the: xmlns:toplink="http://xmlns.oracle.com/ias/xsds/toplink" instruction present in the header of my Message.xml file (modified based on the Account.xml of the examples).
I'm using Sun's JDK 1.4.2 and my $CLASSPATH is:

There is a option to redirect the log to a file and that can be configured in Session.xml .Add the below xml element to Session.xml and based on the log level you can log the sql statements.

Was there anything fixed in Oracle TopLink 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.1.0) ?
I don't see anything in release notes ( http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/ias/toplink/doc/11110/relnotes/toplink-relnotes.html ) regarding fixes. Anybody know where I can get that info? We have run into a couple of issues in the previous 11g release (11.1.1.0.1) and want to know if those issues have been addressed in the new release.

The two major areas of work in 11gR1 (11.1.1.1.0) are enhancements to EclipseLink included with the its 1.1.1 release as well as enhancements around TopLink Grid (JPA-Coherence integration).

What is working in 10.1.3.3.0 that is not yet or will not be working in Oracle TopLink 11g?

If you open the project in the 11g preview it will automatically update the metadata and generate the deployment XML in the new format. Alternatively you should be able to open the 10.1.3.3 metadata in the 11g preview's runtime.
The biggest issue you may encounter in the upgrade besides replacing the libraries and ensuring you are using JDK5 is the removal of the code deprecated in previous releases.

I found an error in ORACLE TOPLINK while adding table CUSTOMER, MOTHERBOARD and MEMORY from database to workbench. Any idea how to solve that error?
And other questions:
1. Does Toplink support inheritance and aggregation object table modelling? If it doesn't, what should I do?
2. Is there any example or tutorial using Toplink Foundation Library?

What error do you get in the MW?
TopLink does support object-relational data-types, but the Mapping Workbench does not have support for object-relational data-types, so you may need to define your mappings through the TopLink Descriptor and Mapping Java code API. There is a section on object-relational data-type mappings in the TopLink User Guide.

Migration from conventional Oracle Toplink to Opensource..

I heard about EclipseLink release coming in next month.
I would like to know whether the Open-source toplink is available now.. Our company is using Oracle Toplink 10.1.3.3.. We are using Oracle's paid version of Toplink called Enterprise..As we are hearing about Oracle toplink going to opensource, We would like to switch to Opensource Toplink.. How would be the migration impacts? Could any one plz answer my question..

You can download the latest milestone from there, and get access to the status and documentation on the Wiki.
The API is the same, but the package names are different. You can run the Package Renamer to migrate your code to the new packages (long time TopLink users should be familiar with this :) ).

Hi,
I am using TopLink for simple Department-Employee relation, i have my project xml configured, But i am facing the problem with following exception
Descriptor Exceptions:
Exception [TOPLINK-46] (OracleAS TopLink - 10g (9.0.4) (Build 031126)): oracle.toplink.exceptions.DescriptorException
Exception Description: There should be one non-read-only mapping defined for the primary key field [emp.empno].
Descriptor: Descriptor(com.oracle.mssql.emp.toplink.EmpTopLinkBean --> [DatabaseTable(emp)])
Runtime Exceptions:
What could be the reason?

My best guess would be that you have a 1:1 mapping from Employee to Department. This mapping represents part of the primary key.
Make sure that your 1:1 mapping is not configured as read-only. Another issue is that you may have set the relationship as target foreign key. This has the same effect as read-only and is not applicable in the 1:1 returning from a 1:M.
