Total newcomer to Flash

Hello everyone. I am sorry for the style of this post, I
wouldn't normally resort to this but I am very new to Flash and a
3D person, 2D kind of confuses me!
I need to create a site, it's fairly simple in design but I
have a feeling it may become a bit complex. It has to be entirely
Flash, the image below will hopefully explain what I need. What I
want to know is if I should create seperate Flash movies for each
page then combine it all later, or build the entire site in one
large Flash file?

How simple is it to have the slider reveal an alternate image
only on that section?
Is it possible for the slider to be white with transparency?
Is it possible for the navigation system to travel along with
the slab?
Can I have the slab move when the cursor nears the edges?
All I need is a yes or no answer and a simplicity scale, I am
happy to research based upon initial guidance.
Any help would be hugely appreciated.
Many thanks.
Andrew.

Probably one flash file. Maybe have the background graphic be
an external file. I'm not really sure from your sketch.
Fairly simple. Just need to understand masking.
Yes. Any color you want. If you need to do gradient masking
then you will need Flash 8 and both the mask art and the masked art
will need to be movieclips cachedAsBitmap. (That will make sense
when it comes to it!)
Yes. Anyting can move anywhere.
Yes. Mouse controlled movement is one of the most popular
things to do in Flash.
All in all about 5 or six moderately simple things to master.
Master them all individually and then put them together. Don't try
and do the whole thing at once or you will probably get overwhelmed
and make a really difficult to maintain project.
PS: You have posted this in the General Discussions, but
there really isn't a strictly timeline based way to do this with
Flash. You will need to learn some actionscripting. So welcome to
the forums, check out the tutorials at kirupa.com and

• HT201263 my 4 is totally unresponsive, just flashes on and off?

All my 4 does is flash on and right back off again, never leaving the apple icon! I do not know what to do with it? i have tried a zillion times the power and home button at the same time, but nothing??

Thanks for the suggestion but I tried that and nothing happened. There is a line going horizontal on the screen with a lock looking thing at the end of the line then there is an arrow that leads up to the I Tunes word and symbol.
I plugged the i pad in and will try what you said again after the battery increases in case the battery was very low.
Do you have any other suggestions?

• Totally new to flash, editing interactive cd

Hi i am completely new to the whole aspect of flash and dreamweaver etc. and have recently been given a project of editing an interactive CD rom which was produced for a client by an outside company.
I have managed to grab the basics of changing the text and the images and stuff, but when i export it as a .swf flash movie, when i view the cd, all of the slides come on in very quick succession, it is supposed to be the first slide and then you click on a "next" button for each other slide, i know i've messed with the interactive elements somehow but i don't know how, or how to fix them as i haven't got a clue about the interactive aspects to flash.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

If the intention is to stop in the first frame, then you need a stop(); command all by itself on the timeline, not on the button.  Select frame 1 and in the actions panel type:
stop();
For your button code, having a stop(); in it doesn't do anything for you.  If the intention is to click the button to go to the next rame then you only need...
on(release){
         nextFrame();
The nextFrame function advances the timeline to the next frame and stops it there.

• Total Install of Flash

I am looking for a means of installing Flash on a system which is not connected to the internet.  How do I get a download of the complete Flash player?

• IDVD question from a total newcomer

Hi folks,
I have a Mac G4 that I bought second hand. It does NOT have iDVD on it, and I want to buy it.
Does iLife 06 provide the software or is it just an upgrade? I ask this because on the description it reads...
"iLife '06, the must-have update to Apple's award-winning suite of digital lifestyle applications, delivers major upgrades to iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD and GarageBand, plus an innovative new application called iWeb for creating stunning web pages, blogs and podcasts."
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Gene

Hi Karsten,
You wrote: iLife6 makes excessive use of the grafic cards abilities, which supports socalled "Quartz".. your "old" Mac doesn't have such a card... so, you miss a lot of "blinkblink" in iM when buying iLife6...
Sorry to be such a dummy but I'm not sure what this means. what is "blink blink? and "iM?" If it's iMovie I have that but don't really use it because I'm running Final Cut Pro 4.5.
I'm VERY interested in what you said about the $50 internal burner. I looked around on ebay and found this...

Is this what I should get? Do you think it will come with instructions on how to put it in?
Again, many thanks to all of you for your input.

• Shockwave flash constant crashing

Since updating from firefox 26, I have experienced constant shockwave flash hangs in both Firefox and Chrome. I have done numerous rollbacks, uninstalls, clean reinstalls, and driver updates. Anything that fixes the issue only fixes it for a few hours then it goes back to crashing.
My system is a Lenovo w520 with intel Core i7 2760 running Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1. The graphics setup uses NVIDIA optimus to split between the Intel HD graphics and the NVIDIA Quadro 1000M. Both have the most recent drivers, updating them did not fix the issue.
I have tried disabling hardware acceleration, but no dice. It is extremely difficult to get to flash player settings because browser hangs as soon as anything with flash tries to load. Clicking stop plugin does not fix the hang, so I generally have to kill the browser from the task manager. It has become totally unusable.
Virus infection was the first obvious thought, but multiple full scans by MS Security Essentials and Malwarebytes with windows in safe mode and in full mode find no viruses. I have disabled all addons and extensions besides flash, and the problem persists. I finally just uninstalled flash and tried to run everything in HTML5, but now videos only play sporadically. After a Windows restart, a video or two will play, then once firefox is closed, they no longer play.
I forgot to add that flash also hung in Spotify (the program, not the web interface) when it tried to show an ad.
I have also tried running flash in protected mode and out of protected mode, no change in the constant hangs.
Here are some of the crash reports from my system:

I will hold off for a day to see if it keeps working before marking your post as a solution, but right about the time you replied, I had just opened Reaper recording software and realized that something was seriously messed up with my sound drivers, as Reaper hung too, totally independent of flash. I didn't put the two together until you said it was an audio server connection and I realized I had installed a global equalizer a few days before this problem started, so I got rid of that. I reinstalled flash after fixing the sound driver issue, and all is well at the moment, but I've had many false positives. I'll report back in tomorrow and let you know if it worked.

• FLASH CMS websites - secured pages

Hi,
I’m looking for a way to build FLASH websites, which the user will be able to edit and control its content himself. You know, a CMS website, but then totally build in FLASH. I already started Googling on this a bit and came across these 2 things
-          www.flashcontentmanager.com
-          www.flashloaded.com/flashcomponents/fcmspro/
especially that last one looks interesting, but it does cost a 300 dollars for 1 website, which maybe isn’t that expensive, given it’s apparent completeness and easy to use interface, but I still want to explore other potential possibilities.
What is needed on the website, is the possibility to add text, pictures , videos and extra pages by the user himself. Also, and maybe this is the most important / difficult, there has to be the possibility to make secured pages where the client can view his pictures without downloading them à the man that’s needs this website is a photographer that wants to offer his albums to the respective client for which he made the pictures, online. 1 client should be able to watch his pictures on 1 secured page of the site, another client should be able to watch his pics on another secured page of the site, without being able to download them... I hope you know what I mean, I’m sure you know what I mean.
I believe this is possible with FCMSPRO on the flashloaded website (between the keyfeatures list on the website I see: ‘Allows for multiple users with different file upload permissions’ – so I assume that the man will be able to provide costumers a password with which they can watch their pics online, without down- or uploading something themselves?)
Is there someone that can help me on this? Is there anyone that has had some experience with FCMSPRO, Flashcontentmanager or other CMS systems already? I’m curious if I’m going to get out of this. If it will be worth deepening myself in this, or if it will be best to tell the photographer to find someone else for this job.
Thanks

The method i showed above does have a front end and a back end. The code i posted above would be part of the image module in the back end for deleting images.
1. You don't put images and files in the database, you create an uploader that uploads the files (pictures, whatever) onto the server and then writes an entry into the database telling it where the picture is stored, what the name of the file is, what type it is, whatever you need. Then when your website connects to the database and downloads the info and stuffs it into arrays, it iterates through the photo array and downloads the photos as needed using the URL you stored.
2. Loading into the database is covered with the above tutorial but i'll post my database retrieval code anyway.
This connects to a database and stuffs each column of a database into an Array. Then if i wanted to actually download the photos i mentioned by the urls just retrieved i'd use:
3. Some people put them in seperate swfs at password protected URLs because its more secure but you don't necessarily have to.
flash CMS isn't well covered, i spent a long time looking for tutorials and i definitely didnt find any that worked well. If you're still working through the basics like AS3 tweens, loaders, and loops, then you're going to want to figure those out first. Those are supported well online, though.
Finally, here's a good example of some flash CMS: http://group94.com/#/flash94/
Good luck.
EDIT: Sorry for retracting my code, the client i did it for wasn't happy.

• Flash CS5 Button Help

To start, I'm a total newbie in Flash, so I'm sorry if what I'm asking is ridiculously primitive, but I was literally thrown into this blindfolded and I'm using google and several forums to help me out.
What I'm doing:  redesigning a website.  At the moment, the website has a flash file that introduces it's logo and subcategories of its' website on the top of the page.  What I wanted to do was make sure there was a hyperlink on the logo that would bring anyone back to the homepage, very basic stuff.  The issue I have run into is that the logo is actually a flash movie.  Different parts of the logo appear at different times, and I think this is what is specifically causing me issues.
The logo that I want to hyperlink has several layers, and what I've done so far is select them all and create a button (F8, select 'Button' and rename it).  When I did that, I noticed the layers significantly changed and when I tested the movie, it looks terrible, choppy and not how it originally looked.
I know the step after that is to go into behaviors and insert the url to which I want it to be hyperlinked.  The only thing is that I don't want to show a terrible flash movie to my boss even if it's hyperlinked to the homepage.
Anyone understand all that gibberish I wrote down?  Or does anyone see a flaw in what I'm doing?  I'm not 100% positive if the steps I'm taking are correct, I've been to several different sites, all of which tell me to do different things.
Initially I tried coding it with ActionScript, but I was having terrible issues with that as well.
If it helps, the file I'm working on was altered a while back.  Could it be that the file is not compatible or proper for Flash CS5?
Help!!!

... how do I give that shape/button a url?
Since it is a button, it is already a self animating object that will react to mouse interactions, but only visually at this stage.  The first thing you need to do to make it useful code-wise is to assign it a unique instance name.  So you drag a copy of it out to the stage from the library, and while it's still selected, you enter that unique instance name for it in the Properties panel... let's say you name it "btn1"
In AS3, to make a button work with code, you need to add an event listener and event handler function for it.  You might need to add a few (for different events, like rollover, rollout, clicking it, but for now we'll just say you want to be able to click it to get a web page to open.  In the timeline that holds that button, in a separate actions layer that you create, in a frame numbered the same as where that button exists, you would add the event listener:
btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btn1Click);
The name of the unique function for processing the clicking of that button is specified at the end of the event listener assignment, so now you just have to write that function out:
function btn1Click(evt:MouseEvent):void {
       var url:String = "http://www.awebsite.com/awebpage.html";
       var req:URLRequest = new URLRequest(url);
       navigateToURL(req);
... how do I know it's properly placed on the correct area?
What area?  If you place it where you want it, that should be correct. (?)
... how do I make sure it's invisible...?
If you can't see it when you test the file and you know it's there and your cursor turns into  a hand when you are over where it should be, it's invisible.
...how do I see the other objects in the flash file I'm working on?
Select Edit -> Edit Document to get out of the symbol editing mode and back to the file editing mode.  If you doubleclick an object on the stage, rather than clickingit in the library, you open it up in editing mode on the stage, but the stage and everything else will still be visible behind it in a faded tone.

• How do I copy objects from a flash shared library?

I'm a total beginner at Flash and I've been given the task of creating a new version of a flash component we use in house. The current version uses a shared library of objects in a separate .swf file.
One of my tasks is to copy the items from the shared library into this new version so only the one .swf file is needed for everything to work. I've figured out how to unlink items in the new version from the shared library but that doesn't seem to copy them into the new version. can someone tell me how to do the copying bit please? I'm using Flash CS3.

Drag it to the computer’s internal drive and then to the library in the open iTunes application window.

• Throws Exception - a newcomer...

I have written a small amount of code that takes information from a text file and displays it in a GUI (swing) - this is called my RasterDisplay class. However, I am now creating another part of the GUI which will have a button that makes a new RasterDisplay. However, when I try and call my RasterDisplay constructor from within my actionPerformed method (see below) It tells me I have an "unhandled Exception type Exception". I can't throw Exception in the actionPerformed method so how do I get this method to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated - I am a total newcomer to Java and can't make head nor tail of related topics in all the forums...

• Recording sound without Flash Media Server?

Hello,
I am totally new to Flash Media Server I need to be able to record sound via a Flash app and save it to a server preferably without the use of a Flash Media Server type setup. There is no requirement for live streaming.
Is it possible to record the sound and save in memory then pass the data/file as a query parameter to the server?
I don't even know if I've posted this in the correct place... any help/guidance will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi,
You can use any publisher to publish like FMLE and publish the streams to the application in applications folder suppose application name is sampleApp then create a folder in applications folder of FMS root directory and then keep the below mains.asc file which does the recording of published streams to the sampleApp application.
//main.asc
application.onConnect=function(clientObj)
return true;
application.onPublish = function(clientObj,streamObj){
      trace("in application publish");
      streamObj.record("record");
application.onUnpublish = function(clientObj,streamObj){
trace("on unpublish");
streamObj.record(false);
I think this should solve your problem.
Regards,
Amit

• Newbie Question: Can Flash do this?

I would like to make some movies (whatever format would load
the quickest on a website and produce the smallest file size) that
show the stroke order and formation of Chinese characters.
The viewer would see something like an animated GIF that
shows the character being formed on the screen
Can Flash be used in conjunction with a Wacom Tablet (or
mouse, for that matter) to do this? If so, how would I do this--I'm
a total newbie with Flash.
If it can't can anyone suggest a program that could do this??
I have the Adobe Master Collection, so I have access to all the
programs.
Thanks.

Flash can do it, but not quite the way you're approaching it,
I think. I would start with the complete character on the stage and
use a series of animated masks to reveal the strokes in sequence,
to make them 'appear' like they are being drawn.
There are some other ways to go about this as well, but this
would be the simplest by far.

• Flash 8 Pro can't code for flash 9 and AS 3?

Original post here was deleted before responses showed up to
this thread. Since there were responses hours after I deleted this
I am reinstating it with what the thread is about so others that
may have similar question can see what responses there are.
Sorry for confusion here.
Thanks

Hmmm.. I thought my post was whiney and wasn't worth it so I
deleted it. After I did, there was responses hours later. I feel
like an idiot now. LOL
Thank you for your replies. I was unsure really what was
going on, it looks like Adobe is taking flash to a new level and
when they new version comes out next year if I can afford it, will
be forced to invest in it. I think it is a bit much to have to
reinvest in entire new software every one or two years though I
understand now about the total redesign of flash engine.
For those that didn't get to read my post that started this
thread. I asked if us Flash Pro 8 users are out of luck with beign
able to use the flash 9 and AS 3 features. I thought it would be
nice to have a extension that allows version 8 to use version 9+
but as the responses and what I have read, it is an entirely
different animal.
I hope though that once 9 comes out next year, the IDE not
the player which came out few days ago, that it wil be software
that will last more than a year or two without needing to upgrade
to the next thing. The turn around on technology and trashing the
old is a bit too fast for me especially when it means multiple
thousand dollar investments. I guess upgrade discounts help..
Anyway that was what my original thread was about.
Thanks
