Total System Uptime

Is there a way to view total uptime (as in, since the OS was installed)? I'm curious about it.
Even if not built in, does anyone know of an app or script which can keep a running total? Thanks.

(ignore line 2, it's a bug that occasionally pops up, something to do with fast user switching or logging out/in, etc. It'll be gone when I finally have to restart)
Sidney - This is from the uptimed program, which is pretty cool. I had problems compiling it ages ago but sorted it out eventually.
Like you say Bill, I'm stuck on 10.4.4 now until the system crashes, which looks like never with Tiger so far... (I've had a few catastrophic crashes, system freezes, etc. but the thing always recovers if I give it enough time to itself! Only once did I have to ssh in and kill the windowserver process which took it back to the loginwindow and everything was fine). This was all started in the interests of OS testing you understand - OSX was touted as 'uncrashable' and all that - finally it seems to be true.
I'm with you, my machines are always on, although I do let the disks sleep at night. Hopefully it crashes soon because the longer it goes the harder the decision will be...

  • Total system crash caused by/during FF 6.0.1 update

Here on rock stable Windows 7 64bit SP1 (Dutch).
At 19:00 hrs (local time) today I was surfing normally when suddenly my mouse-pointer froze. Duration was a few seconds and then suddenly a complete black screen. No matter what I did, nothing happened. Only a message from my monitor that there was no signal. My PC was still on but no HDD activity or whatever. Had to do a hardware reset (first time since I have Windows 7).
After a restart in Safe Mode (just to be sure), I did normal restart and all was fine again but still no clue on what happened.
Did check log files and did see that at the moment of the crash FF had been updated to 6.0.1. And sure enough, when I started FF, I got the screen with info on the new build.
All is fine now, was just the 1 crash. Somehow the update caused a total system crash.

Looks like its been fixed for me, not by 6.0.1 but by - Todd Siechen from http://www.dvdthemepak.com

    Todd... I love you xxx
After having a nightmare since first day of version 6.0.0 and still no fix after 6.0.1, even after Apple requested the files... You fixed my problem... Checked for duplicate fonts and found about 5, selected "Resolve Duplicates" and everything great, even with old projects... You should work for Apple!

    1) The first and biggest culprit we found to be causing problems is with font issues. In order to alleviate this problem, open Font Book and make sure all the Fonts that are turned on have no dots next to them. If they do then select them and select "Resolve Duplicates" from the Edit menu. If you are using a different font manager then use whatever tool is available to make sure no duplicate fonts are loaded. iDVD 6 is very sensitive to this.

  • White Screen - total system failure

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro, 1.83 GHz, serial # begins with W8614. I set up the AirPort wireless base and at first I could only get an internet connection right next to the base - I lost it if I moved farther away. I tried again later from the next room and this time the internet connection seemed to work. I was browsing the web and suddenly the entire screen went white for a few seconds, then nothing. The screen went dark and the computer died.
I unplugged it from the power source and plugged it in again, closed and opened it, tried every button, couldn't get anything to happen, the screen was totally dark. The computer was still on, though, because it was hot and the little white light at the latch on the front was on. I assumed the battery was still running, so I waited overnight for it to run out.
The next morning it was cold and the latch light was off. I plugged it back into the power adapter and tried to turn it on. For a second I heard a flicker of noise and then nothing again.
I called Apple tech support and they asked me to try a few things like resetting the power manager but nothing worked, it was still dead. So they arranged for me to send it in for repair. My question is: what could cause this kind of total system failure? It died completely in the first few minutes I was using it! Apple's always crowing about how reliable its computers are compared to the competition, but this performance is ghastly. It does not inspire confidence, to say the least. Can this kind of problem be repaired? Should I have any faith in the machine once it's returned to me? Yipes.

I bought it from Amazon, not Apple. Amazon allows you to return opened computers within 30 days, but they charge a 15% fee. I was hoping when I called Apple tech support that they'd just offer to replace it right away, but I guess if you buy the computer somewhere else their policy is to try repair first.
Certainly if Apple can't repair it, they'll send me another one. It's just that I never heard of a computer totally dying like that right after purchase - I wasn't aware how often that occurs. I'm just worried it might be buggy and crash frequently after I get it back - in other words, it might be a lemon. Hopefully I won't have to have it repaired over and over. Plus, of course I'm annoyed that I just acquired my shiny new expensive machine and now I have to wait two weeks before I can begin to use it.
Thanks for replying. Do you have an idea what causes this type of white screen demise? Any reassurance would be helpful.

  • Constant crashing - 'Total system failure'

Hey, if anyone could help me with this problem I seem to have I'd be really grateful, I don't know much about what's going on.
Basically, yesterday for no obvious reason a few apps started crashing on my iMac G4 running 10.4.9. Not being too technically gifted I used the solution to most of my problems, restarting the computer. Almost as soon as it started up though, it froze, so I had to restart again. This time safari refused to stay open for more than 5 minutes and msn messenger just bounced once in the dock and then stopped. I haven't installed anything dodgy recently, and the last thing that I got from apple was the 2007-004 security update.
So I ran the apple disc utility, and got it to fix some user permissions, but when it came to the 'verify disc' test, it didn't seem to happy. It said there was something wrong with the hard disc but it couldn't fix it. I got this message:
    Verifying volume “Hard Disc”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Illegal name
    Keys out of order
The volume The volume isc needs to be repaired.
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***
    *** REBOOT NOW ***
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
Unfortunately, have no idea what that means. Almost instantly after this though, some DOS-like black lines popped out from the left hand side of the screen, with white text full of numbers and computer jargon I didn't understand. As far as I could make out the kernel was involved It said something about a total system failure, and that it was waiting for a remote access code or something.
Anyway the point is, my computer is a tiny bit broken Doe anyone know if this is something ordinary that can be fixed with a few clicks of the mouse, or is there a virus involved? My initial thought was that it could have been the recent security update, but that was 4 days ago and this started last night.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Ali_J;
May I welcome you to the Apple Discussion Forums.
First of all this is a virus.
    Do you have a backup?
The error message "Keys out of order" indicates that you have some really serious problems which your disk. Do you have any idea as to exactly how full your disk is?
If you have run your free disk space very low this can cause this problem. If not, you might have a wonky disk. To repair this problem you are going to need a much more powerful tool then Disk Utility. DiskWarrior may be able to repair this problem. If it not able to fix the problem for you about the only alternative then is to reformat and reload.

  • System uptime discrepancy

On one of the nodes in my Hyper-V 2008R2 cluster, most (but not all) of the VM's are showing uptimes that suggest they're rebooting every night: each morning they show something like "Uptime 7:30:00" or thereabouts.
The VM's affected all seem to be Server 2012R2 machines, though one is Ubuntu and one Suse Linux (that one is a Citrix NetScaler device).
I feared something was actually causing reboots and went through the Event Logs - nothing found.
However if I check the Event ID 6013 which records system uptime, I see quite different numbers, showing that the VM's have been up for many weeks, as I would expect.
What could cause this discrepancy and should I worry?
No sig is a good sig

There are indeed lots of save/restore events in the host event logs.  They correspond with backups as you suggested.
Our backup software is CommVault.  It seems this is a quirk of the CommVault agent when running on some OS's, as it doesn't affect Server 2008R2 VM's or Windows 7 ones.  I haven't seen it documented anywhere by CommVault but I will pop a post up
there to see if anyone's noticed it before.
Thank you for the hint about Task Manager, I had never noticed that item on there until now!

  • ITunes V6.0.0.18 - Total system crash whole importing CDs

Since installing V6.0.0.18 system crashes when importing CD. When I say crash I mean total system crash and automatic re-boot. The hard disk check reports truncated files in iTunes library (no surprise there the PC just crashed). When this happens is very variable sometimes at the start of a CD import sometimes on the last track and occasionally the import goes fine.
There is nothing wrong with my PC or CD/DVD drive, it has run happily with every other version of iTunes from V4.x onwards and continues to be very stable with the exception of this import problem
    Any Idrea?

    Hi Martin,
Sorry I can't help you, but you may get better help in the iTunes for Windows forum.

    Hi,
All transactions in SAP Business One are done in Local Currency (LC), regardless of what currency is specified in any document. All financial reporting is based on LC.
SAP Business One offers reporting in another currency, the system currency (SC). This currency is for balance sheet reporting only. It is not relevant for any transaction involving profit and loss accounts
    Hope this is helpful !

  • System showing wrong system uptime.

    - I got a very weird problem with my Solaris 10 system.
    - System is showing a wrong value of system uptime which is more than thousand days. We tried reboot, RAM & NVRAM changes, all SC parameters changed, but problem is same.
    - Can you please give me some clue or idea on this ?
    - A change of CMOS battery was performed some time back, but not sure if it causes the issue.
    ~Anoop

    Hello Anoop,
What Kernel rev do you have on that system? (uname -a)
The problem description would suggest you have an issue with your utmpx file, given that's what the uptime(1M) command references. If the value printed by uptime increases, but is not reset by a system reboot, then uptime is pulling out a very old value from the utmpx database. This would suggest that the utmpx, and possible the wtmpx files are not getting updated or written to as they should.
You can use logadm(1M) to either truncate or rotate the utmpx/wtmpx databases.
Have a look at the files to see when they were last updated
Do other commands which access the utmpx/wtmpx databases also produce strange output? Commands such as:
$ who -b (Should display the time of the last boot)
    $ who -u
    $ who -l
    $ last

  • Total system memory *decreases* when using invidia 9600M GPU

I have 4 GB of RAM in my MBP. I understand that when using the integrated video processor (invidia 9400M), 250 MB of system RAM are set aside for the video memory. So when my total system RAM showed 3.8 GB, that made sense. However, when I switched to the 9600M GPU which has its own 256 MB of dedicated VRAM, total system memory actually decreased to 3729 MB!
How can that be, and why isn't does the total amount of RAM installed show 4096 MB?

    Hi Odysseus,
I am not completely sure here, but it sounds like you are seeing an issue related to 32-bit addressing. I am not well-versed in Mac architecture, but I when it comes to PC architecture. With a system that uses 32-bit kernel (like Mac OS X and 32-bit versions of Windows), it can natively access up to 4 GBs of RAM (232bytes). Here is where I get sketchy, I know that 32-bit WIndows (including Vista) uses what is termed a flat memory model. In order for the system to access the video RAM, the kernel maps the video memory over the upper addressees of the 4 GB memory space. It does it backwards, so for a 256 MB video card, it gets the addressees from 4096 - 3840 MBs. This prevents these addressees from being used by the system, so you effectively lose that RAM. There are two traditional methods of fixing this, the first is to use more than 32-bits of address space, and allow the video RAM to be mapped above the 4 GB barrier. This is what the Intel Santa Rosa chipset (used in all older MBPs that support 4 GBs of RAM), The second fix is to use a 64-bit kernel, which puts the address space up to the 264 range (around 17.2 billion GBs of RAM). As previously mentioned, I am not well versed with the Mac architecture, but I wonder if the behavior you are seeing is some combination of the 9400M taking its system memory, and the 9600 GT taking up addressees due to an addressing limitation? Won't really know for sure until Snow Leopard comes out, as it finally makes the OS X kernel 64-it, which should ease any addressing limitations. Good luck!

  • How to setup System Uptime in Service Level

    Hi All,
I have some question about SAP System Uptime report in SLA (Solution Manager).
I would like to generate report how many days of system up. (Example how many day, how many month)

Does anybody know about how to configure Service Level ?
    Please give me an advise.

On the OAS Control's OC4J section, there is a place you can set the OC4J instance server settings. You can create certain number of JVMs and their runtime properties.

  • Total systems freeze

Though I've searched the threads posted under similar topics, I'm not sure that any of the solutions provided will work in my situation.
I recently attempted to install OSX Tiger onto my G4, and I think I killed my Mac. I had OSX loaded and a way to convert back to OS 9 to support my scanner software, and I think my attempt at Tiger installation overloaded something. As you can tell, I'm a proficient user but know next to nothing about procedures for installation and did not have access to any guidelines for upgrading, just the installation software.
Now, when I boot up the G4, it tells me that I shut down improperly and it must clean up the system (probably because I had to physically unplug the computer to force reboot), and if I bypass this clean up (having experimentally allowed it to run it took four days to reach 99% completion)it will load up OS 9 and promptly freeze. I can't access anything to allow me to do more than get it to this stage. I can't open files, drives, or even get the mouse to respond.
I know everything is still there, but I can't get anywhere.
    What can I do?

When I initially installed Tiger, I left the installation to run while I was at work and when I went to restart with the disk and the system loaded, but everything ran extremely slowly. Then it froze.
I ran through everything I could think of and finally managed to eject the disk, and physically forced the machine to shut down.
From that point on, I have gotten my Mac to boot up maybe twice without the total freeze that it now can't get past.
I'm running a Power Mac G4, and I know that I was pushing pretty close to the limit on HD space, but I was afraid to try to uninstall OSX before installing Tiger. As I said, I don't think I've lost what was on my Mac, but at this point, I can't do anything at all, including opening my drive to try starting with the Tiger install disk.
I'm at the office now, so I don't have access to my Mac to give you anymore info, but I can check on anything else over the weekend.
Any suggestions you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

  • Total system freeze

twice in the last 12 hours or so my macbook has totally frozen and the only way i found out was to hold the power button. i'm running system ram (512) and can't think of anything strange before it happened.
the first time, it seems to have frozen when i opened the book. the screen stayed dark and the display sleep light was on (solid white not pusling white) and i could never get the display to show.
the 2d time i was running only firefox, itunes, textedit (i lost my document), and quickvoice. i set the computer down and, when i came back (45 seconds later) the display was on, but the second hand on the analog clock was not moving, there was no mouse, and i couldn't do anything. once again, i turned it off with the power button.
    this is ridiculous. any ideas?

I actually wanted to submit this to the MSI support online, but whenever I press the submit button it returns me an empty 'Issues list' ...
Here is what I wanted to submit:

When running a dvd or playing a game, my system totally locks up after 15-60 minutes. Within 5 minutes with 2 monitors.
The screen simply freezes and nothing is possible. Upon hard-reset windows reports a crash, 'BlueScreen'.
    I have tried:
    - Running 1 graphics card, in both PCI slots seperatly, tried the same with the 2nd card
    - Tested both the graphic cards in another system, no problems
    - Tested a 8800GTX in my system, same problem
    - Tried 4 different video drivers, 2 older, one current, one beta, no joy
    - Did a 6 hour stress test on the CPU (Prime95), no errors
    - Tried putting a Q6600 cpu in, same problem
    - Used Memtest64+ for 10 passes, no errors
    - Tested 2 different soundcards
    - Tested 2 dvd drives (one IDE, one SATA)
    - Tested Vista 32bit, Vista 64bit, Windows 7 64bit
    Temperatures:
    - CPU = Idle: 30°C | Stress: 48°C

All hardware is running at stock speeds, no overclocks. The system runs for a longer time when 1 video card is inserted together with a increased NorthBridge voltage (1.5 V), but it crashes eventually
Using a Corsair TX750 power supply, delivering 750W. When using the MSI PSU calculator it says I need 620W, so it should be enough. Also when running just 1 video card the system crashes, it can't be the power supply then...
None of the things that I have tried solved my problem. Since pretty much every piece of hardware has been tested to be working properly, only the motherboard is left.
I hoped you might be able to help me before I RMA this board. I prefer email over phone if more contact is necesairy.
    Thanks in advance
I'm hoping to find the problem... As said above I don't have a second pc at this moment, so if I have to RMA my motherboard I'll be left with nothing. Also, how long do RMA's take with MSI?

    Hi,
can you please provide full system specifications?  Please read the >>Posting Guide<< to get an idea of what we need to know.  Thanks.
Please test with one memory module only and see if that changes anything.
