Touch detections missed in top 20 pixels?

Ok, this is weird that I had not noticed this until tonight.
I'm using a utility app template, and my app runs full screen entirely in landscape with the home button on the right. I bumped into an out of range error so I went to test all 4 directions, and found that in the landscape position, the first 20 pixels on the left (as if there was a portrait mode status bar), are not passing touches to my UIView.
I'm using the simulator and not a real device at the moment, but I would guess the code would be the same. Is there some way to get those touches? I have all my windows rotated in IB, and the status bar is hidden, and also set to landscape mode (so wouldn't any pixels losing touch be on the rotated status bar?)
(I also had an alert come up in portrait mode tonight for the first time (it has always been in landscape like it's supposed to be)).
I'll be rechecking my code, but any tips, or notes saying that those pixels are lost will really help.
(Especially since I was planning to move the info button to the bottom left corner, right in where the pixels are not accepting touches. Not very helpful, eh?)

Now that I realized this was where the status bar is, a quick search in the developer forum returned, two hits for: "status bar" AND touches, which explain the problem.
See Touch screen doesn't work in status bar area
or how come invisible status bar is gobbling up touches?
Apparently this is a problem on the simulator, and not the actual devices (according to the other threads) but it does mean, I'm probably not going to move my info button to that corner of the screen ;-(

  • ITunes on my iPod Touch is missing some tabs

    Can somebody help me?
    I have:
    + iPod Touch 4th Generation 32GB
    + Wi-fi connection
    + iOS5 installed
iTunes on my iPod Touch is missing some tabs. The only tabs that's showing on my iTunes are Podcast, iTunes U, Search and Downloads
Also, whenever I try to load un Podcast tab, it ALWAYS say Your request could not be completed.
    Thank you very much!

Where exactly are the tabs that are showing, are they a list at the bottom of the page and next to it is the "More" option, or are you referring to the options on the More tab? You can move these options between the bottom of the page and the More section.
Is that the problem, or is there something else missing? (Perhaps it would have helped if you had mentioned what is missing). If it's the Apps section you are looking for, it has its own App button on the Home screen.
As for the problem with downloading Podcasts, I would try getting them in iTunes on your computer if you cannot download them via the Touch's Wi-Fi.

  • Why detect missing faces? why not recognise them all in the first scan?

each time i import images, some faces are detected instantly, but I have to run detect missing faces one time more to find other recognizable faces. why possibly does aperture apply such mechanism?

at a guess its probably a speed versus productivity tradeoff, detection down to a certain level takes a certain amount of processing, detection to the nth degree would take a lot more.

I have Photoshop CS4 installed on my laptop and Photoshop CS4 Extended installed on my desktop (part of Production Suite). I'm experiencing a problem on BOTH systems where the main menu is missing a row of pixels (see image below). Both systems are running Windows XP Pro SP3.
I have Open GL disabled on both systems. The weird thing is the missing row of pixels comes and goes while I'm using the application. Has anyone else noticed anything similar?

I have never seen anything like this on several installations of CS4, but obviously a few people get it.
You could experiment with other video settings, for example updating or rolling back drivers, or checking with hardware acceleration reduced in Display Properties > Advanced.

  • Detect Missing Faces

I recently learned that through an update a new feature was added to Faces. When you right-click on a picture in the iPhoto library you can now select Detect Missing Faces. This feature apparently relaxes the face detection algorithm so that faces that were not found in the initial scan (or during the upload) may now be detected. Unfortunately, this feature is only available when one is not in Faces and you must be looking at the thumbnails.
In any case, it does not seem to work for me. I have several pictures with clear head-on shots where the faces were not detected (and I don't mean recognized); when I exit Faces and right-click the image to select Detect Missing Faces, nothing happens.
Is it working for anyone? Is there a trick?
    Thanks.

I have the same frustrating problem. Everytime I add new pictures, faces is not recognizing it. I would have to individually tag them, even though I already have hundreds of pictures with the same face in my corkboard. Help

  • Detect missing faces feature explained?

    Hi,
When you select some photos, right click, and select "detect missing faces" is this supposed to make iPhoto rescan the photos you've selected and try to find any faces in the photos? As if you re-imported the photos? Or is it just trying to match faces it has already found during import with names on the 'cork board'?
The reason I ask is that I did an experiment of deleting many faces iPhoto found, followed by the "Detect missing faces" bit. None of the faces that were previously found were found again. If I re-import these photos, then the faces are found again.
    Cheers,
    Chris

Okay, I'll try to make my question simpler: Does this feature find try to find new faces in a photo, or try to name those it has already found?
As an aside, in the German version the menu item is localized as 'Fehlende Gesichter erkennen', which from a logic standpoint makes very little sense. I would think it could only recognize a face it has already found (ie the face is not missing). Seems like it should be either 'Fehlende Gesichter finden' or 'Unerkannte Gesichter einorden' depending on what the intent of the feature is.

  • OpenGL 3D touch detection

Hey, so I might be completely stupid and missing something big, or I just suck at googling.
I've built a 3d interface on the iphone where you can move in the world like a 1st person shooter. I've been wanting to implement a feature where the user can touch objects in this interface, and the objects are then selected and a description of it pops up.
I know how to grab UITouch events, but what I need to be able to do is interpret those touches and figure out which polygon, if any, was selected on screen.
I see how this would be an easy problem if the interface was 2d. You could just set your view to map 1 to 1 from opengl to cocoa touch pixel points.
My problem is that when you are shifting perspectives like in a 3d interface, how do you detect if a touch selected a polygon on screen.
Hope this wasn't too vague. I someone could send me a link or offer some advice, or anything, it would be appreciated.
    Thanks

OpenGL used to have a "picking" feature that would do this for you, but that's not present in OpenGL ES. It was a pain to use anyway.
You'll have to do your own picking, i.e. cast a ray from the eyepoint, through the point on your projection-plane that corresponds to the point touched on the screen, and collide that ray against your world to see what it hit.

  • My apps won't launch & menu bar missing all top left icons!!!

A strange concurrence of multiple problems:
I am a pretty advanced user and have an iBook G4/1.33 GHz running Tiger 10.4.8, but I am having trouble with my PowerMac G4/500 MHz running 10.3.9 right now. I keep my PowerMac in Panther since it is almost 7 years old and I only have Tiger on my iBook disc.
Suddenly a few things started to happen at once yesterday:
    1) NONE of the top right menu bar icons (OS 9 status, modem status, iChat, monitors, AirPort, Volume, clock, etc. show up upon log-in or restart.
    2) Virtually NONE of my apps will launch from the Dock or the Finder. They bounce a few times then give up, with no error message.
I peformed successful repairs booting from both the OS X Panther disc and TechTool Deluxe. Although recommended, I can't create a TEST User because System Prefs won't launch, can't repair permissions from the problematic drive because Disk Utility won't launch, and I can't clear out caches because Cocktail won't launch.
I made sure the Application Support Folder in my Home Library had read/write permissions for me and applied to all enclosing folders as suggested. I tried trashing the com.apple.ActivityMonitor.plist preference in my Home Library also as suggested. However, it wouldn't allow me to remove the Launch Services file in the Caches folder of the main Library Folder as I also read here in the discussions.
Aside from successfully running disc repairs from the startup disc and TechTool, I tried repairing permissions from the startup CD as well (since couldn't launch any apps like Disk Utility from regular startup drive). Every time I try to repair in this manner though, after a minute it tells me "Disk Utility lost connection with Disk Managment" and I must quit and relaunch Disk Utility. However, same thing happens when I do, for both my drives running copies of OS X 10.3.9.
Only thing I can think of is to do an Archive/Reinstall of one of the two OS X systems on two different drives. But does anyone else have a clue what is causing this or what I need to try??? I read similar stories on here but nothing will all these symptoms at once.
I would REALLY appreciate some input, thanks!!!

    Menu Bar Problems ..........
Check the following link for OS X troubleshooting steps. When doing so, following all steps in the order provided:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
1 If resetting permissions doesn't help, you may have a corrupt preference file... Delete....
    Delete ~/Library/Caches (folder)
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist
where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string
    • Then log out and back in again. You may need to go to System Preferences to put back the menu items you need to display.
    • Removing systemuiserver.plist will cause the right half of the menubar back
    its original pristine default state.
    2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
    - Navigate to ~/Library and drag the "Preferences" folder to the desktop.
    - Restart and test your applications.
    • If this does not work, move the "Preferece" folder back to ~/Library
    • If this works, delete the old preferences folder. (You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them).
    3. Navigate to ~/Library and drag the "Fonts" folder to the desktop.
    - Restart and test your applications.
    - If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( A likely suspect is Time RO, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
    4. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
    - Navigate to ~/Library.
    - Get Info (Command + i) on the "Applications Support" folder.
    - Open the "Ownership & permissions" flippy triangle.
    - Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
    - Click on "apply to all"
    - If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are having trouble with.
Note...The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.
    • Create a new User.... go to System Preferences/ Accounts and click on "+" at bottom left of window..... and test the apps in this new account if they work the problem is isolated to your User
    (~ means your home directory)

  • PMTU-D Black Hole Detection Missing?  Cause of some conn hangs.

In looking through the kernel source, it appears that Apple has left out one of the most important parts of Path MTU Discovery (RFC1191) as suggested in RFC2923. Since Path MTU Discovery is enabled by default, this may cause some of you to have 15 minute hangs and ultimate termination of connections when large packets are sent to specific hosts.
Other than DNS and Wireless network drops, MTU settings appear to be one of the single most problematic things going on with OS X right now.
For those who are not familiar with MTU, here's a brief rundown.
10/100 Ethernet networks support a base MTU of around 1514 bytes. This is the max number of bytes that a packet is able to be in order to get put on an Ethernet network (and be within spec). Gigabit Ethernet allows for larger, but we won't go into that.
You're probably more used to hearing 1500, however, that is the MTU for IP (or the Ethernet payload) as the Ethernet header itself is 14 bytes.
In that 1500 bytes, you have to fit your IP header, ICMP/TCP/UDP header, and any higher layer protocols and data, each layering on top of the next.
    |<--Ethernet (14 Bytes)--><--IP (20 Bytes)--><--TCP (20 Bytes)--><--Data (1460 Bytes)-->|
So that is how things look on a local area network.
Once the WAN comes into play, the Ethernet header is stripped off leaving only the IP packet and another header put in its place to get it over the next link. This process goes on and on and on until the packet finally reaches its destination.
But here's the problem - what if there is ANOTHER layer between the Ethernet and IP stack?
This is actually quite common and you're probably using it now. The protocol PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) fits between the Ethernet header and the IP header and adds another 8 bytes to this packet size.
So now we end up with:
    |<--Ethernet (14 Bytes)--><--PPPoE (8 Bytes)--><--IP (20 Bytes)--><--TCP (20 Bytes)--><--Data (1452 Bytes)-->|
Notice that we now can't put as much data in this packet or we'll end up with a packet that is too big to fit on the Ethernet network.
The PPPoE header will ultimately get taken off once the packet gets where it needs to go at your ISP, but there may be other 'tunnels' between you and your ultimate destination and continue to strip off space of how much data you can put into a packet.
So how do you know how much data you can put into a packet when you don't own or know anything about the network between you and the destination?
That's where Path MTU Discovery comes into play.
It used to be that IP packets would be fragmented (split up) if a packet was too big to get put on the next network. This process of fragmentation causes overhead for both the router having to split up the packets and the receiving device that has to put them all back together again (and make sure they go in the right order).
So in order to reduce this overhead and also ensure that you are always sending the largest packets possible from end to end, IP stacks started setting the 'Don't Fragment' bit in the IP header. This instructs routers to throw away the packet if it is too big when it gets there.
When the packet gets thrown away due to it being too large, the router that throws it away also sends an ICMP packet (an IP diagnostics message) back to the sender telling it what the MTU is of the interface that couldn't take the packet. The sender can then re-calculate things based on that value and resend.
This works great EXCEPT when there are firewalls in the way (or broken routers, which is less likely these days). Many firewalls will not allow these ICMP messages to go back to the sender. Therefore, your host never receives the message that it is supposed to reduce the size of the packet and keeps trying and trying for about 15 minutes until it finally dies.
This is one reason why you may be seeing long hangs that ultimately end in termination of your connection.
RFC2923 goes into some options to work past this issue.
One way that this can be done, Windows Vista for instance does this, is for the system to keep an eye on how many max sized packets get retransmitted. After a certain number (lets say 5), the system assumes that it is not getting this ICMP notification and cuts the size of that packet in half so it can now get the data through - assuming that smaller packets are better than no packets getting sent.
It may also (and does with Vista) temporarily disable the setting of the 'Don't Fragment' bit and allow the routers to just take care of things. So in Vista, you'll see the page stutter for a second, and then continue to load, where an OS X system will sit there and hang for 15 minutes.
This is where OS X goes wrong. This behavior is called PMTU-D Black Hole Detection and does not appear to be in the IP stack for Leopard (and probably not previous releases).
    So what can you do.
You have a few options, some of which I've already provided to a few folks (although without the mathematics so it's just a rough guess value).
First, you can just disable PMTU-D. The command to do this is:
    sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.pathmtudiscovery=0
This is a 'quick fix' but does eliminate the benefits that PMTU-D provides.
Second, you can calculate out what size MTU seems to work for you by working backwards and configure that on something within your control.
If your home router supports it, that's a good place to reduce the MTU since it only comes into play when you're using your Internet connection and not when hosts within the same network talk to each other. So if you place the MTU of 1472 on your router and your host sends it a 1500 byte packet, it will send back the ICMP message telling you to reduce it down to 1472.
If your router doesn't support it, you can reduce the MTU on your macs physical interface. This isn't always the best solution since you really should then reduce the MTU on each of your local systems or you could run into issues locally.
The command to do this is:
    sudo ifconfig en1 mtu 1472
To make this permanent for Ethernet, set it in the Network settings. For Airport, search the forums. I provided an update you can make to one of the preferences files manually to do this (don't remember what file right now).
I have found a couple of sites (Washington Mutual's website for instance) that appear to have configuration issues internal to their network in which a device behind a firewall (possibly the web server, load balancer, or IPSec added) that may have an MTU less than 1500 set on it AND a firewall blocking ICMP packets from coming back. These sites will throw off your math since you can no longer assume a max size of 1500 for IP packets. In this specific case, you have to assume 1480.
Third, you can adjust the MSS setting (Max Segment Size) in the kernel to a value that is 20 bytes smaller than what you would otherwise set the MTU to. This ensures that the TCP stack doesn't put more than that amount of data in any single packet (therefore, eliminating the MTU issue), however, this will not work for UDP.
Finally, you can submit a bug report to let Apple know that PMTU-D Black Hole detection is something that we need.
So what kind of impact does this have on performance?
This will depend on what solution you choose, what the performance of your home router is, and the load on the various servers that have to potentially re-assemble the packets.
That said, knocking things all the way down to 1400 bytes, I am able to still get at least 15 Mbps up and down stream over the Internet.
If you have any questions on this post, please post and i'll do my best to respond. Hopefully this will help one more person resolve their performance issues with Leopard.

Hi Karsten and thanks for the suggestion!
I have exempted internal networks and can connect them via the VPN connection. I also got connectivity to the outside world with nat (outside, outside) and 'same-security-traffic permit intra-interface'.
A question remains though. At the moment, all traffic gets out of the network through the 'outside' interface IP (.22). I'd rather use a dedicated address from the /29 on GigabitEthernet0/0. Is this possible to achieve that? To put it differently, I'd like to NAT the VPN range onto an address that is not the 'outside' interface, like I did in this statement, for instance:
    nat (v200,outside) source dynamic v200_private v200_public
My other question is, whether the single NAT statement [nat (outside, outside) dynamic interface] is sufficient for VPN traffic and whether the original statement can be removed [nat (vpn, outside) source dynamic vpn_pool vpn_public].
Thanks once again for the tips!
    R.
