Track automation of multi-instrument

dear all,
i have defined a multi-instrument for my access virus,
output is port 1 of my midi-interface (emagic mt4).
everything is ok (in and out of midi data in regions ect.),
but when i try to do some automation of controlers,
the automation data is not transferred to the virus.
also the knobs of the mixer do not move.
if you change to "view track automation" (V command),
you also can adjust the channel from 1-16.
usualy for multi instruments the channels are fixed.
maybe anybody has an idea.
thanks and best regards: martin
ps: using a "regular" instrument (single) makes no
problem at all, the virus gets all controller data as
defined on the automation track...

When using Kontakt as a multitimbral Instr it's better to use the Controller assignments within Kontakt.
Kontakt's definition of how it's setup for automation at the instrument level is different from PLAY, Omnisphere, SampleTank, etc...
I find it easier to setup automation within Logic as a multitrimbral and specifying the number of channels (16 for Kontakt, 9 for Play, 8 for Omnisphere, etc...) and when loading the AU instrument, specify the multiout (16 stereo Kontakt, 9 stereo PLAY, 8 stereo Omnisphere) and automate on the aux outputs of each of the aux channels you create in the mixer window for the channel strip of the instrument in question.
Of course for Kontakt, there's an extra setup you need to do by creating your multi outputs for Kontakt so that Logic can see those, but you can save it as a preset for later use.
If you really need instrument specific automation, it just might be easier to create that instrument as stereo and to "instrument specific" automate knowing that you're just going to affect one loaded instrument.

  • Setup of a multi-instrument  (doesn't work)

    Hi guys,
I setup a multi-instrument in order to have individual control over each part of a Stylus RMX. I did it exactly as the Stylus' tutorial says but it doesn't work. If for example I select subchannel 1 in the arrange and play something or have a Midi region, the Midi data is received by every part in the Stylus. If I select subchannel 2 nothing happens. No matter what subchannel I chose, the Midi data displayed by the transport bar in Logic says I´m transmitting in channel 1
    What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for any help with this...
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    So you have:
Attached a multi-instrument to your RMX instrument track, and when prompted you "remove" the port setting on the instrument track.
Set the instrument track to Midi Channel: All.
Set the multi instrument port to OFF and channel to ALL.
Click on channels 1-8 on the multi instrument itself to activate them.
Verify that you have all individual 8 tracks of the multi instrument added in your arrange window (and not 8 duplicates of track 1).
And still, each multi instrument track triggers only midi channel 1 in RMX?
    Dang.

  • Automation changes volume of whole multi instrument.

I have multi instruments set up in Logic and the volumes of the 16 channels work separately in the mixer but when I go to automation it changes the volume of the whole multi instrument. How do I get around this?

You need to select the midi channel of the instrument you want to automate within the multi instrument from the inspector.
You can see the channel in this pic.

  • Multi-Timbral track automation with VIRUS TI

Hello, My name is Joao and I bouth one VIRUS TI and I am experiencing one problem related with track automation on Logic 8.
I want to know how can I make independent automation for each track that I had created on Logic. For example, when I create one Multi-timbral track, the first automation goes to all of the other 15 tracks at the same time.
If you need any additional information, do not hesitate to contact me.
    Best Regards,
    Joao.

Yeah that's a known problem with some 3rd party plugins. Assign the different sounds to different Outputs/Auxes instead, and write your Automation into the Auxes.

  • Logic 7.2 and Stylus RMX question, related to multi instrument

    Hey guys,
    Hope everyone is doing well.
I have a very specific question here regarding multi-instrument RMXs. We've got RMX as an 8 channel multi in our autoload. Use it all the time. The multi is set up and has been working great for quite some time. The plug-in is instantiated on Instrument 1, and then there are 8 subsequent mutli-instrument midi tracks below Instrument 1. I'm being super descriptive here, so I apologize if it's long winded.
Now we also have RMX channels 2-8 (b-h) routing to stereo sub outs in Logics track mixer. RMX 2(b) routes to sub-out 3-4 and so on down the line. Anything routing to (a) in RMX goes out 1-2 (main). We only have RMX channel 1(a) going to the main out.
    Okay, so the question.
How would one create and edit a volume performance on the midi track RMX 2(b)? If you edit the "midi volume", which is normaled at 100, of any of the midi tracks under the RMX multi, all they end up doing is automating the volume of the Instrument 1 track that the RMX multi is on. Is there a way to make the editing of volume on RMX 2-8 (b-h) correspond to the automation of the volumes on their respective sub outs? This is a tricky one for us here.
I know that you can automate the volume sliders for each RMX channel within the actual RMX plugin interface, but it would be so much nicer to be able to do this within Logic. I'm a bit surprised that the editing of volume on 2-8 only edits the volume of the Instrument track they correspond to.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance.
    The Earle-Tones Music Crew

    Steve,
Thank you for your post. We actually have our autoload set up with an RMX multi the way that you described. I know it's a bit difficult without seeing it in front of you, but I'll try and describe it again.
So take the set up that you have described, with RMX instantiated on Instrument 1. RMX multi Channel 1(A) going to the main 1-2. RMX multi Channel 2(B) through Channel 8(H) going to aux returns.
Now here's the issue. I can automate the volume sliders within the plug-in RMX via midi-learn. But now select RMX multi 2(B) within Logic's Arrange. On the left you will see a Midi Volume slider corresponding to RMX Channel 2(B) that you've just selected. It's normaled at 100. Slide that Midi fader down to 50. Now select Instrument 1 (the Instrument channel that the plug-in RMX multi is instantiated on). It has affected the main Instrument 1 channel volume. I don't want this. I want RMX multi channel 2(B)'s midi volume fader within Logic's arrange to affect it's corresponding AUX.
This may seem nit picky, but if you want to draw in volume performances via the hyper edit / matrix edit on the different RMX multi channels (B-H), it's fruitless at the moment because each of those 7 midi faders in Logic's arrange all control the same fader: Instrument 1 that RMX is instantiated on.
I know that midi learn within RMX is an option, but I am just wondering if there is a way to get those multi channel midi faders to correspond to the aux faders.
    Thanks again guys!

  • Using kontakt multi instrument in logic express

    hi folks,
i am trying to load several instruments into a multi instrument in kontakt2. the documentation says that it is possible to use this to trigger each instrument from a different midi channel. i seem not being able to figure this out. the book "logic6 power" even mentions that you can assign regions to specific midi channels but it does not explain how.
basically, i would like to be able to switch between pre-loaded sounds within one track instead of having all of them sound like stacked.
    can anybody help?

not quite sure what exactly did the trick, generating the multiinstrument in the environment and cabling it to the audio fader strip thingy in the mixer... but it works now. i guess it was crucial to come to the conclusion that a different midi channel on the masterkeyboard has to be chosen in order to get a different instrument to sound rather than trying to find a way to set the instrument somewhere in the track or in the region.
i guess, simply by talking about it the soution started the dawn on the horizon...
    thanks!

  • Best way to add delay line and arpeggiator to multi instrument?

I am using logic sequencer to drive external hardware, and have been making use of the arpeggiator and delay line objects in the environment.
Apparently they have to be set up in loop cabling? Where the delay line runs into the multi instrument, which then in turn runs back into the delay line?
If I set it up just like this, the delayed note is then fed back into the signal and feeds the delay line again so that an infinite delay is created, even if I have repeat only set to 1.
I put the transformer in and if the note is of the original velocity it is sent to the delay line, all other velocities are brought down by -1 and those notes are sent just to drive the external equipment, not back into the delay line itself.
My question is is this the simplest way for this configuration? Or is there a simpler way that I'm overlooking? If there is a simpler way my guess is it probably lies in the parameters of the transformer because I am somewhat unfamiliar with it.
    Thank you for your help.

Hey thanks. I mean, this way actually works, which I am an enthusiastic about, because it took me awhile to figure it out, I am just thinking there might be a simpler way.
Maybe I can try to explain a little bit more detail. I have an external sampler that can receive on 8 individual midi channels. Let's say I have a bass line sample on Midi Channel 1, and a Snare sample on Midi Channel 2, and I want to use the delay line to delay only the snare sample.
I run the delay line into Instrument Track 2 in the environment. At this point, there would be no delay. Not until I run the multi instrument back into the delay line. (I suppose this makes sense, because the multi instrument would need to be in the signal path). Then, however, the note that is delayed is fed back into the delay line as well (the delayed note of the snare), and it in turn feeds the delay line again, and an infinite loop is created.
If I put a transformer in there so that top condition is true the note at the original velocity is fed into the delay line (The original snare hit on beat 2 let's say). Then the delay line subtracts from the velocity by -1 or any number. (In reality this may or may not effect the sound, because the sound in the sampler may or may not respond to velocity. I can always have it play 'full on' whatever the velocity of the midi note.)
Then all notes with subtracted velocities bypass the delay line, which should be the case, because they are never meant to be fed back into the delay line.
That is a lot, I know, but I wanted to be as detailed as possible. I mean, it actually works! I am kind of surprised about that. I don't know if there is an easier way to achieve the same results. I am working with limited hardware equipment, and that seems to be the best way for me to set things up as far as synchronization issues are concerned. Might be an unusual set up, but it seems to give me the best results right now.
Thanks for your help! All input is appreciated!

  • Multi instrument help?

Does any one have or know how to setup my enviroment so i can use my JV1080 and Proteus 2000 at the same time, because at the moment i can only use one, as all my tracks will only play midi1 or midi2 , not together.
Or if anyone has a enviroment already setup like this can they send it to me thanks

I guess we would need to know if you are new to Logic, MIDI, or both...you should have each on their own ports on the MIDI interface if you want to access them each in multichannel modes. If I remember correctly P2K has 32 channels-so you'd need 3 ports if you really needed to access 32 from proteus and 16 from JV. Roland is weird-you should just leave that in performance mode when working with it as a multi instrument. Most likely with proteus, too. So, you'd want each on their own port-then you create a Multi instrument in the environment for each instrument (2 for the Porteus if it supports 32 channels. Then you'd simply assign the port in the paramater field on the left for the each selected device. Ensure the Channels you want ot access do not have a strike through them. In the arrange these will become available as MIDI instrument tracks including each channel you've enabled. Then you simply select the channel you wish to work with. If you use these modules sparingly you may want to check in to using then as Audio Instrument Inserts. Setting Up Logic is really akward to new users. Before you do all this, ensure that everything in your AudioMIDI setup is correct.

  • Moving and Copying/Pasting Track Automation Data

    Hello,
I am a fan of using track automation data to control the volume levels on the faders of my Audio Instrument tracks. I am NOT using the track automation assigned to regions, I am using the ones assigned to tracks. If I move a region, however, the automation data (not surprisingly) does not move with the track. What is the easiest way to move automation data on a track? Is there a way to shift all automation data over a specified amount of measures etc?
Furthermore, I would like to copy ALL of the track automation on one track, and move it to another track (and keep the relative distance between all nodes, etc equal). How can I do this?
    Thank you very much,
    Connor
    iMac G5 1.8Ghz 17" (ALS)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2 GB RAM

I think you need to shift-drag select (rubber band select) the
automation stuff and when it's highlighted, hold option, click hold
drag and what you selected will be copied to the new location you
drag it to. You need to be pretty careful to option click hold
exactly on the automation line, if you miss it won't invoke the copy

  • Multi-Instrument, individual effects

I've create a 16 channel multi-instrument template for one of my software instruments I bought.
I can load and assign up to 16 instruments when using this instrument. ( I know I'm not limited to 16 if I want to layer instruments but I thought I'd keep this question simple).
I've noticed that for every one of those channels that I have a simple reverb and chorus effect I can add.
Instead of those simple reverb and chorus effects, can I assign a AU effect to each one of those 16 channels.
Let's suppose I wanted to use my CamelAudio Phat on channel 2 and Space Designer on channel 7, is that possible in Logic 8 within a multi-instrument setup.
How to do that by either suppling a page number in the Logic Manual or a URL for me to read would be great.

I remember that you recommended this method about a week ago. I wasn't able to understand how how you simultaneously record to different tracks. I have Vdrums going into a 2X2 midisport (keyboard in 2nd port). How exactly do you set up your tracks and edit an EXS24 drumkit so each pad/trigger records to a separate track?
    Thanks
yes, I use separate tracks and I use EXS24 a lot for drum programming...
But if you use Vdrum... I never used it, but I suppose that is similar to BFD2 or EZdrummer...
in that case there is no way... you must use MultiOut and Auxiliary outs for separate the tracks... (when I use EZdrummer or BFD2 I prefer to use his internal Mix... but I don't use this kind of plugs for the full drumset... or I bounce the parts as Audio tracks)
The problem is just to know how Logic works with Aux track...
it works by using a second internal buffer at 32bit floating point...
this buffer is locate in the "buffer processing"... and can be set as small, medium,or Large... in any case this buffer add Latency... and when you use Aux + PDC set to ALL this is what happen to All the audio tracks and MIDI incoming events... Latency will be doubled or more (depend which plugs are in the AUX)!
if you dont use PDC set to ALL ALL AUX of the multiOut instruments will be delayed!
If you use "step by step" programmin is not a problem... but for Live recording (I play drums in live mode on my Keyboard) is a disaster!
I'm talking about this live drums recording:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZO7xuDExo5I&feature=related
this internal buffer is a great advantage for Dynamic range and Headroom... (you have virtually 32bit floating point X2 resolution = over than 64bit)
but... that can be also a disadvantage...
this buffer does not exist un Cubase or other DAWs... (that's why there is no problem with multiuotput instruments)
this is one of the difference thinking between Logic and other DAWs..
Usually I said "don't force Logic to works as Cubase... because they are different!!"
    I hope this helps...
if you have doubt feel free to ask!

  • Multi instrument does not sound

    hi!
    newbe question?
in a song i have a multi instrument and i can hear it.
i'm in the arrange window. i tell logic "build track with new instrument" and open the enviroment window and built a new multi instrument, i cable it to 4 new audio instruments. in the arrange window the new midi track the midi channel is selected with "all"
my problem:1) i cannot hear the new build multi instrument. i allways heare the other, former built multi instrument.
    2) i learned at this list, when i built a multi instrument at the enviroment window it should appear in the arrange window. this also does not happen. it happens the first time when i built the first multi instrument.
i make a mistake and i dont know witch one
thanx for your time and help
    raino

today i started from the beginning...
i started with a new song, built my audio instruments and starting from the arrange window with midi tracks i built in the enviroment window 2 different multi instruments and now i can hear that 2 multi instrumnets as a multitimbral sampler- one with two esx sounds and one with four esx sounds.
unfourtenately i do not understand how that works when i'm running out of midi tracks and when i create a new one. as i descibed yesterday.
in some way the problem is solved (i can hear the sound i want) in an important way not: what happens when i create a midi track, what is different to an existing one?
    thanx for your interest

  • No recording of MIDI Controllers in MIDI Track Automation

Surely we need to have MIDI CC recordable as track automation on a MIDI instrument track just the same as it can be recorded to faders in audio Instrument tracks via a transformer. I know there are work arounds like recording to standard object automation then moving to track automation but I want to see all my recorded modulations at once as track automation for all my Logic instruments and MIDI instruments without wasting any time.

This gets asked at least once a week.
From about ten posts underneath this one:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2095452&tstart=0
Also is there a way to record all of v-drum midi data into separate tracks?
Record into one track, then use the Split/Demix by Note Pitch function to put each MIDI note into it's own track.

  • Track automation with EW Quantum Leap Platinum Orchestra PLAY edition...

I have Snow Leopard and Logic Pro 9- I use EW Quantum Leap Platinum Orchestra PLAY edition. I would ask on the EW Quantum Leap site also, but I cannot post for some reason...
In track automation it has the option to change the volume in that specific instrument and MIDI channel, but for some reason, it is picking up the other track automation???
I checked all the MIDI channels and everything seems to be set correctly... any information is appreciated. Thank you for your time.
    J-

I have been hitting the credit card recently. Last year I bought a Sony Vaio because I couldn't justify all that money when the new line of MBP's finally came out. Sold it 10 months later - they are meant to be a great build quality? Don't think so!
So, 3 or 4 weeks ago I bought a 13" MBP for browsing and a little mixing with Logic - works nicely - until I start hammering it - but it's good for learning.
Anyway - this new iMac replaced my old 21" 2007 model - wow What a dream!
But you know what I always like, every time I open up one of these boxes? The smell! What is it with Apple? Do they spray something in the box? I think they do!
As for how the migration went - pretty good.
Right now though I still have OS and apps on the 256gb SSD and all the data is now on the 1TB HD. Works so well that I don't know whether there is any point in changing it to be honest. I'm sure I could improve read speed by putting all the logic samples on the SSD but I have over 350gb of them so not sure there's much point!

  • View Track Automation

    Hello,
I recently upgraded to Logic Pro from Logic Express.
In Logic Express "v" was the default key command for "View Track Automation." By default in Logic Pro, it is not. I changed the key command for "View Track Automation" in Logic Pro to "v," however, when I press "v," I only see the track automation on my audio channels load, and not my instrument (MIDI channels). In Logic Express both were displayed simultaneously.
    How can I fix this?
    Thanks you,
    Connor

Is there a way I can disable track automation and then re-enable it?
You can delete all track automation from all tracks, or just some tracks. You can also turn it off, and then back on again, but I don't think that will help in your case, but try it.
If I were to copy the regions to a new file it would take a long time to reload and configure all the instruments (I used sample library plug ins).
It's not that bad - I've had to do this many times.
First, on all your more complicated tracks, use "save channel strip settings" on the individual tracks. Also, use "save settings as" on individual plugins if you need to.
Then relaunch Logic, without core audio (control key - open Logic) and create a brand new template. Add the global settings. Open your existing song, and first drag all the audio files over to the new arrangement, then the instrument tracks. Now go through and choose your previous channel strip, instrument and plugin settings.
A little bit more tweaking, and you're done. I'd suggest saving it as a completely different project folder, choosing the option of copying everything from the old folder to the new.
I hope this helps a little - good luck.

  • Using hyperdraw for automation of Logic instruments

I'm pretty new to Logic and I have not figured one thing out even after browsing through these forums.
I like the drawing mode that hyperdraw offers for automation of synth parameters and such much more than the regular automation drawing.
Hyperdraw seems more like when drawing automation in Reason which I like very much.
If possible at all, how can I locate and draw automation for all the buttons and sliders on the Logic instruments (and VSTs also for that matter) in hyperdraw style?
    Thanks

Well, the Hyper Editor is really a MIDI editor, so you can create and edit MIDI data, including Control Change messages (like CC07 for volume or CC01 for modulation for example) - so it is like automation in that respect.
As far as I can see, using track automation is the best option because all the available parameters are there ready to automate as soon as you insert the plug in - perhaps I'm missing the point of what you want to do.
