Track Volumes

Just started experimenting in Garage Band after years spent in Cubase. It is starting to sink in that you can't alter the volume of clips within tracks. In other words, if volume varies in a track, or if you want to reduce it at some point in the arrangement you have to do this on the fly while sending the mix to another machine??? I can't believe you can't adjust volume for discrete notes individually. Am I missing something in Help???

I'm using GarageBand and Cubase LE. GarageBand is better for me for recording the initial MIDI, using its own instruments plus QT Instruments and Sound Fonts.
Assuming you still have Cubase available here is a suggestion:
1. Record all the MIDI and any real instruments. Don't bother with effects and only do a rough mix so you can tell what's going on.
2. When you're happy with the tracks, click the padlock icon on all of them to lock them. Press 'play' and wait while the machine locks the tracks. Stop play and save the project.
3. Quit GarageBand. Find the project file. Right-click on it and choose 'Show package contents'. Inside the poject is a folder called 'Freeze Files'. Copy all the files out of this into a new folder.
4. The files have code names. You can't drag them into Cubase LE as they stand for some reason (I think they are 32 bit so that might be why). Open each in an audio editor such as Amadeus II, identify them, save them with the track title.
5. Open a new Cubase project: you don't need to create any empty tracks. Drag the newly saved tracks into Cubase and they will appear there. Now you can add effects and have the advantage of the fader-based automated mixing.
It's all a little complicated, but though you can do automated level changes in GarageBand as described above, it's fiddly and becomes a nuisance if you have a lot to do. With the faders you can do a decent mix, then automate any changes quite easily and hear what's happening as you do it.

  • Track volume doesn't shift when I shift track contents, probably simple!

    Hi all,
So I am creating a mix-tape for mothers day and am trying to blend/overlap tracks using Garageband. I have each mp3 in a separate track and each track's "Track Volume" enabled and taking care of fade in/out. But now I need to shift all the tracks down to add a new track, or to rearrange tracks but when I do the Track Volume curves stay put. Any ideas? I feel like I may be coming at this mix-tape thing the wrong way. Its my first time in Garageband but I am pretty computer savvy dude. Any help would be awesome! Thanks!

I just found the "Lock Automation Curves to Regions" in the Control menu.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks to anyone to read this, I hope it helps someone.

  • Why does my track volume on selected track suddenly spike?

Why does my track volume, on the SELECTED TRACK, suddenly spike to max as if I had volume automation set. It never did this before a few weeks ago. Very frustrating. It happens during playback and loop recording. It started around the same time I started using a new audio interface (steinberg UR22) but I don't think that is causing the issue because I wen't back and used my MBOX to be sure, and it did the same thing. I have never had any use for automation or a master volume track either. It doesn't matter if I have a guitar, bass or mic going direct or through a preamp. It seems to be internal to GB settings. The only change I've made to my macbook recently was I increased my RAM from 2 to 4gb.
It's like Garageband has a mind of it's own and it feels as though there isn't enough signal reach the track to it boosts it itself. What am I missing?
Please help I can't get anything done because it spike in the middle of a take and I have to start over.
    I'm using GB 11 version 6.0.5

  • How can I lock a track volume level to never move in Garageband?

    Hi there
I'm currently creating a backing track of a popular song and I have built up all the parts of the songs against a wav track which contains the original version of the song.
I want to be able to mix the volumes of the tracks Ive built to the main proper recording, but I need to be able to LOCK the actual wav song track at say the 1.7db mark. Is this possible?
As I cant do it now, I keep accidently adjusting the volume level of the actual wav song track, so then all my volume mixes on other tracks are rendered useless (As you cant UNDO a volume change back to how it was)
Even if I engage the padlock "lock" button on the actual wav song track I can still move the volume of that track up and down. So its not 100% locked in my opinion.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi
    Do you mean:-
    Select the track
    Click Down Arrow
Make sure Track Volume is selected
Click on the dot that has been created at the start of the track (to check its number level)
Click on the line now showing at the very end of the song and make sure the NEW dot you've just created is at the same number level as the one at the start.
    As this seems to work.
If I dont put any dots on it, you can move it as you please still.

  • Trouble changing track volumes

I seem to have a lot of trouble changing the individual track volumes. Sometimes it will not let my mouse select the slide bar to change the volume. After a couple seconds fidgeting with it and clicking on it it usually will allow me to "grab" it and move it. This is quite annoying. Anyone else run into this?

The track volume slider should move normally, every time. Does it appear grayed out at first or active? You might want to just click on the main track bar, to make it active, and then try it. Maybe that's what's been causing it.

  • What is the cause of Master track volume resetting on it's own?

Ok, so you record a project. You create a Master track, adding volume automation to create a fade out at the end of the track. You adjust the volume the track plays at, using the Master track volume slider, until the playing track reaches the fade out region at the end of the Master Track. Correctly, the track fades. With cycling of the track, the track begins again, but the Master Track volume slider reverts to a lower volume, at which it remains throughout all subsequent cycles. This happens whether or not the master track is locked throughout. Why doesn't it stay at the volume you originally set?
The only time the volume should alter, surely, is when the automation curve tells it to reduce to zero, at the end of the track?
This thing is causing me a good deal of lost time.

    Nick,
I would recommend testing your counters in MAX using Test panels to help narrow the issue. Next I would then try and run one of the examples in LabVIEW that is doing the same counter operation you are performing in your application for example, simple event counting. Find out if you are still getting the same error. This will narrow in on where the error is occuring and why.

  • Euphonix MC MIX and Logic 9.0.x = no tracks volume values display

    Hi,
Did anybody noticed that, since introduction of Logic 9.0.1 update, the track volume values aren't showed in the MC MIX display anymore? Euphonix support says that they are aware of the problem and are working close to Apple to resolve the issue, but that a fix would demand a new update from Apple.
Does anyone have some info from Apple side? Any light on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
    see ya

Got this from the Avid Support group: Go to Library/application support/Euphonix/Usersets/MC2User/MC_USER_SET_Root/ and make a copy of the Logic Pro.xml file. Then paste it back into the same folder but rename it Logic Pro X.xml. That should then open your old button settings for your MC Control. This worked for me and one other, so I hope it will work for everyone. There may be some different commands that will have to be changed in the button settings for LPX but I haven 't had a chance to check all of that out yet. I'm just happy this worked, I didn't like the idea of inputting all of the button settings from the start!

  • How to not link the track volume with CC7

I need CC11 to do the notes' expression , CC7 to do the phases' volume.
But every time I move the CC7 rate, the track volume (left hand side, the big slide pan) move as CC7.
I used to use sonar, it doesn't have that problem
How to disable the link between CC7 and the volume slide pan?

    Hi,
as far as I know, CC7 is reserved for Volume, and as you used it for another function, you did something extraordinary (even with sonar ) Look what tweakheadz says: http://www.tweakheadz.com/midi_controllers.htm *7 Volume (MSB) If you re-route to Controller 7, your software mixer will mess up*
    You have several solutions:
1st: Select the MIDI regions in question, go to the event list and filter it by searching for controller No. 7. Now you can easily select them all together and change them (all together) to another value that Logic likes more (and that fits MIDI standards better...)
2nd: Now comes the really advanced way: Build an environment including a transformer for each and every software instrument, cableing the transformer to the software instruments channelstrip input. Now, in the arrange, you have to re-assign the MIDI tracks to the transformer in the environment. It's more complicated than playing chess against Kasparow, but it will open you unknown fields of possibilities (I've tested it and it works for me, but i really don't need this solution for 99,9% of my music). It's a MIDI wasteland for people who as kids loved to play with do-it-yourself electronic kits and weld their cables themselfes... In short: You have to know some thing about signal flow and how MIDI works. Perhaps it is the philosophers stone for you? Who knows.
Anyway, I'd recommend solution No. 1 because it is easy, quick and it works.

  • Adjusting Volume Levels in Track Volume Editor Question

I have started to experiment with the track volume editor available in the track mixer ...
I set some graph points and adjusted the volume of a track in various areas ..
    It all worked great ...
Then I noticed I did not have access to the track volume slider as it was dimmed out ...
With some good advice from hangtime I was able to undim the track volume slider .... but now I have not been able to progress from there ..
When I open the track volume editor of other tracks that have not been tampered with yet ... and move the track volume slider ... I can see the volume line move up and down ...
Now if I go back to the track that I have manipulated the volume ... and move the volume slider ... nothing happens to the volume line.
I am assuming that after you make adjustments in the volume editor you can no longer adjust the initial output line ... Is this correct ..? If so ... what is the point of undimming the blue button?
Also .. I'm kind of sure that I read somewhere that there is a key combination that will reset this volume line to unity .. at least that will let me start over again and give me access to the overall volume ...
    Thanks for any help ....

    Thanks for the reply ...
So you have to reset the line to enable the fader .... as I mentioned before .. isn't there a key command to do that .. rather than having to delete all the graph points ...?

  • Show Track Volume button missing

I'm trying to edit clip volumes in the timeline and I have no 'Show Track Volume' button. The button is simply not there. Do I need to enable this button or the the software corrupt?
    Cheers!

That depends: what version are you on?
If you're on CC7.x or 2014.x, then right-click in an audio track header, in the vicinity of the Mute and Solo buttons. In the context menu, select "Customize..." Then drag the Track Volume control from the Button Editor to the desired position in the track header.

  • GB 09 track volume and midi issues

Does anyone know what would cause the track volume to automatically go up during recording sessions?
And what would cause my midi devices to automatically disconnect when launching Garage Band?
    Thanks,

    sblackburn my friend,
Seeing that Nokia does not give a solution to this, it seems that Nokia does not care about their customers the only thing I did was look for a third party music player and found the Alon Dictaphone, it has an integrated equalizer and sounds very good (better than Nokia preinstalled music player).
I saw in other forums that there is coming the 3... update for the E61, BE CAREFULL; if this happened to us with the 2.. update, what can we expect from Nokia in further updates?? no support, very bad from Nokia. Now I am thinking to sell this E61 I have and buy a HP mobile messenger with windows mobile operating system, I`ve been told that is very good and also that HP brings to their customers very good attention and support, that´s not the case in Nokia sadly.

  • How do you change the track volume so that it moves with your project?

I understand you can change track volume for a given track (by hitting the down arrow and fade it up and down). BUT then if you move that track - the track volume stays where it is so your volumes then get all messed up - any solutions?

  • Difference between auxiliary track volume and send/bus

I'm trying to take it easy on my laptop so I started using AUX tracks for compressors, eqs, etc. that I have on multiple tracks. However, I have a few questions.
When I add an aux track, it is added at -∞. I guess I don't completely understand its function. What is the difference between me pulling this up to 0 or changing the volumes in my original track?
With that in mind, I'm assuming (maybe wrongly) that if I want the full effect/volume to be sent that I set the send to 0 also (the little green circle that I pull up next to the send button).
Am I wrong in any of my logic? I'm just trying to figure out how this all affects volume and what not and what values to set these things at. I had my mix set at individual volumes that I liked. However, when I switched my tracks from all having an individual plug-in to sending them all to a bus, the volumes changed, even when I set the send and the aux track volume to 0.
I know I'm wrong somewhere here! I just don't know where! Can you guys help and point me to a fix and better understanding? Thank you.

Are these the two methods you were talking about?
Yes these are the methods with one note ony !
In the 1st picture the chennel strip sends are routed to Bus 1 - so far so good. But what I see is that you have inserted an EQ on the system Aux which is not so good. In this scenario the chanel strip audio path is dubplicated (one is passing thru the channel strip out 1-2 and the other is splited thru the channel strip Send Knob->Bus->Aux-> Out 1-2 so you EQ the Send path only - OK?
In this scenario you can insert  Reverb, Delay, Chorus etc and use them as calssical system FX so the duplicated "send" path just adds some system FX (note the Aux FX plugin must be set to 100% Wet) so you add wet signal to the dry path. You can correct your 1st setup and insert Reveb for instance. After that you can control the reverb abount for each channel strip using the channel strip send knob(s) (currently they all are set to 0dB).
When you want to use say an EQ or Compressor etc then your second setup is OK ! In the second picture you have grouped the chanel strip outputs to one bus/aux so all inserted plugins there will behave as Group "Insert" ones (no duplicated paths here). The second setup is used with say violin, vocal winds group summed to an Aux where you want to EQ, Compress, Pan … the whole group etc.

  • Why is Track Volume, & Master So Low?

No matter how high I set the volume, I'm not getting very much volume at all. There's hardly anything showing on the LEDs, some of the instruments are up all the way, yet show less than halfway! Is there some global volume setting somewhere (other than the Master volume) that I just don't know about??? This is very frustrating.....
And anyone know where all the software instruments are hiding? The meager handful that are showing up can't be all there are.....

    poflynn wrote:
How did you record the instruments in the first place? If the recorded level was low it will play back low. If when you raise the individual Track volumes up and the Master volume up and still find it too low you can try duplicating the Track and copying the Region over, thereby doubling the output.
The software instruments you may have to download from one of the DVDs that came with the computer. They, along with the loops, are usually not installed.
    Hey Poflynn,
    1. This is a midi file that I loaded in, so does this mean I have to crank up the volume, then export it as a midi file, then reload, in order for the volume to be usable? This is odd, cause I've never experienced anything like this, with even el cheapo midi programs, or even using onboard QT to play the files... I remember, back sometime, someone showing me a little something I could click on, that suddenly boosted the volume back up to where it should be, but I can't find it, nor have I found it on line...
    2. I just reloaded Garageband via my iLife 08 Disc, wouldn't all the loops & software instruments load in automatically with the program? As it is, some definitely did, but I know the instrument supply is very, very thin, as I said, not even the usual standard GM selection (again, something every, even the cheapest players or programs have) is loaded.
What do I have to do, to get all of what should be there, and where can I find more instruments? thanks...

  • Is there a way of Automating track volumes in finer increments of +/-0.1dB?

Logic's 127-step resolution is far too crude for fine mixing adjustments - value 1 numerical adjustments sometimes mean jumps of +0.2 or even 0.3dB!
Is there a way of increasing the resolution of Automation, at least for volume?

    James,
The only way I've found to get Logic to register in smaller increments is when holding down CMD and moving the yellow automation bar (arrange page) ---- it's the vertical yellow bar that moves up and down to reflect the current value of volume automation. Normally this move is for trimming the overall level of the automation on a track, and you can get .1 dB resolution from it. But it's not a practical control for mixing, natch.
The volume scale for Logic's faders is not linear. Many months ago I mapped out the values, and yes, there are sometimes fairly large jumps between them. This is out of necessity when given only 127 steps (7 bit controller resolution). But I seem to remember measuring:
    • smallest volume difference between adjacent fader steps:  .1 dB
    • largest volulme difference between adjacent fader steps:  .3 dB
Of course it would be better if Logic used a 14-bit controller resolution, but that's not the case...
And just for perspective, if I remember correctly, the finest increment you could get from SSL G-series console fader automation was .25 dB per step (a quarter dB). Logic's coarsest value is .3 dB, not far off...

  • HT2375 Using logic 9: play back of all project files now has problems:  Track volumes are way off - if panning is set to center then you cant hear that track? Even if pan is adjusted tracks are low and or distorted I have looked at core/built in audio

Been having project play back problems for about a month.  Sometimes when I open a project the volume of certain tracks is low and or distorted.  Oddly if a midi track is panned to the center (0) its volume is too low and if I pan right or left the track becomes louder.  Sometimes this doesn't help and if it is an audio track things become distorted.
Although things have been working good for about a year now I think it has something to do with the fact that I have to take the laptop to work and use headphones/built in audio for play back and then take it home and use different audio interface but I can't be sure.  The settings in preferences/audio/devises seem to be correct.
I have not added any plug-ins recently.  I have not downloaded any new programs recently other than a NI tutorial video (shouldn't have any affect) but I am trying to use a new midi controller but again that shouldn't have any affect on play back of existing track?
    Any suggestions?

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.
