Trackpad crack

I thought I would post this because when this happened to me I couldn't find any relevant/helpful postings.
I have a new Macbook Pro 13" unibody laptop. I take absolute care of my computer and have never dropped or misused/abused it ever. I opened it one day to discover to my horror that there was a hairline fracture in my trackpad. It looked like a small hair at first and as I tried to brush it away, it extended bigger across the trackpad. It was coming pretty much from the bottom right hand corner of the track pad. I was very worried that Apple would not cover this under warranty as I could find only limited information online about this and the info that I did find was all about people who had dropped something on the track pad, breaking the glass.
I visited CompNow (which was the apple retailer that I purchased it from) because Apple, as usual, had a 5 day wait to see a Genius and I was very worried it would get worse. After taking it in, it turned out that my actual track pad was virtually immovable from the top of the button and this was creating unnecessary pressure which likely caused the crack.
So this is simply a post for anyone who this has happened to and thought they may not be covered under warranty. CompNow fixed the track pad in 3 days and it was totally covered under warranty which was fantastic.

I've personally always found Apple service in Australia to be exceptionally good Smoc, whether through AASPs or Apple themselves. I haven't need them often since buying my first Macs in the mid 1980's but they have never left me feeling badly done by.
No doubt others have run into issues from time to time here, but I'd have to say that the treatment you received was very similar to that I've experienced myself on those rare occasions when I've needed it.
So hats off to Apple Australia and their dealer network , I reckon! From my own 'sample of one" I reckon it would make a great model for those in other places, where things sometimes don't seem to go quite as smoothly, to try to emulate!
Cheers

  • My trackpad cracked! How much normally would it cost to replace it?

Hi. Recently my Macbook Air trackpad cracked. I realize that the people on the community are costumers, not employees, but I'm wondering of any of you have gotten your trackpad replaced and how much it cost and if possible, how long it took to replace. Thank you!
P.S. For getting it replaced I am planning on getting it replaced at an Apple Store.

Apple doesn't repair it.  If there is no sign of abuse, they replace it with a refurbished unit.  The fixed-price for non-warranty replacements can be found here.

  • Trackpad crack and LCD bleed

    Hi,
I purchased the new MBP a week after release. It's my first mac after using Windows for years, and other than getting used to some of the UI conventions, I'm quite really happy with my purchase. It's a great machine and I love the display, the solid feel and pretty much everything about it. There are however a couple of things I've noticed which I had some questions about.
LCD: it's pretty much great. no dead pixels, wonderful contrast. However, I have noticed that when the screen is black, I get a fair amount of bleed on the left and right side. Is this normal?
Trackpad: I haven't had the issue of missed clicks that other people have, or at least I haven't noticed it as I have tap to click enabled. I have also not noticed any dead zones. One thing that I've found just by touching it is that there seems to be a hairline crack around the left corner. I don't think it's impacted sensitivity of the area, but if I run my finger over it, I can definitely feel it. It's not terribly visible unless you look at it nearly from the side of it. Is this something I should be concerned about or get replaced?
These things don't seem to be issues now, but I'm just wondering if I should get them looked at. Anyway, any help or comments are appreciated. I'm really liking the whole Apple experience.
    Thanks in advance!

Since we have started to play the "I am with" game, I have to say that I am with Carl on this one!
Carl had never written anything about the original poster having a "dumb question". He had just questioned his course of action.
If one were to suffer from the issues that the original poster had written about, they should contact Apple right away.
Furthermore, if you expect Apple to address any issue, you need to contact them. They do not read these threads. Apple Discussions is not a way to submit problems to Apple. If you want Apple to fix it, contact them. By doing this, you will be helping anyone else that might experience the same issue in the future.

  • Trackpad cracked/ bulged... How much does it cost to fix it?

My tracked pad recently cracked. Because of this the trackpad is also sticking out, so the computer doesn't completely close. I'm not sure how it happened through, I'm guessing it fell. I'm wondering about how much it will cost to fix this?

    "computer doesn't completely close."
DO NOT USE your macbook. Power it off.
Contact Apple for appt.    There is a high likelihood your lithium pack cell is swollen and pressing out from the inside.
    Peace

  • MBP 17" 2010 cracked trackpad

I bought a brand new 17" MBP from the Apple Store in Glasgow, UK, in June.
Today my trackpad cracked right in the middle, under normal use - I use my middle finger to navigate and click, and it just kinda "gave way".
Am I covered under the warranty?
    Cheers

No one can tell you what Apple will say under these circumstances except Apple. We're all just other users here. Take your MBP in for service.

  • MacBook pro Trackpad Broken?

Hi, so I went to A trip to China, and on the terrible turbulence, the trackpad cracked, ever since then, I have been having a hard time using my trackpad as sometimes it randomly goes and flies across the screen disappears, and reappears and sometimes it doesn't even respond at all, like right now, and it's reallly annoying, how much will it cost to get in fixed, (mid 2009 laptop)

Take it to an AASP or Apple Store for a quote.

  • IBook trackpad clicker is messed up... How can I fix it???

Sometime between the time I received my iBook G4 and now, the trackpad clicker got messed up. I have to press down on it really hard to get it to click, instead of just pressing gently on it. Anybody know how I can fix it?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Assuming you have not been eating or drinking around it, check your Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse settings for the Trackpad to make sure the clicking speed is set the way you want it.
Adding a third party mouse could affect the responsiveness of the trackpad.
If you have been eating or drinking around it, or it has been a bag not clear of lint, something might have gotten between the trackpad cracks and caused a short. You can always add a mouse or external trackpad if you suspect this has happened. I would not open the case yourself, however, if you want an authorized service technician to take a look to see nothing is loose or causing a problem inside, they might be able to help you out. As long as the machine is under a year old, if you haven't purchased AppleCare, I recommend you do, which you still can.

  • A thinkpad is no longer a Thinkpad.

I feel like I need to make a post about it. My first thinkpad was a T43, it was really well build even with all the bad treatment, I got it for 3yrs and I got a good resale price for it. Then I got the X300, which was the best laptop I ever had. Lite, powerful, solid, I got it for 3 yrs too. Then it was a no brainer to get an other X220. I was a bit surprise about the lower price and the small screen resolution, but, hey, it's a thinkpad! so I got one. That was my first mistake.
Here all the problems that I got with my X220 so far:
    1. The first one was the fan noise issue (FIXED with a BIOS update after few months).
    2. I got a docking station and the connectivity between the docking and the laptop is not really good. As long as you don't touch your laptop (open or close the lib for exemple, or simply type on it) you won't have problem, but if you do, it will disconnect and reconnect from the docking (making external screen issue, usb to connect and disconnect, etc.) .
    3. Screen issue, I got those white spot (I got them on my T43 after 3 yrs only, on the X220 it took 4 months). http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-IPS-display-problem-weird-bright-spot-on-...
    4. Then I got the double clicking with the trackpad (even if you press once, it's like a click, and when you press harder you get an other click (it doesn't do a double click in windows, I talking about the sound and what you feel when you press on the trackpad). To make it simple, it's nearly impossible to click with the trackpad, bad design!) There is a post about it on the forum. (Right now, instead of double click, I sometime get tripple click...). Ok nice, I can live with an external mouse....
    5. I now have the trackpad crack too (maybe it explain issue #4). Same issue as here: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Chassis-Crack-on-X220-covered-under-warranty/t...
    6. I have this electrical noise in the background (you can ear it in your speaker too, but you will ear it even if you mute your laptop). Before we was not noticing it since the fan was making so much noise.... Same as here: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-loud-electrical-buzzing-Is-this-normal/td...
    7. The lastest issue that I noticed a week or so ago, it's the lib that split in two, you can see some pics here: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-Lid-breaking/td-p/559871
Basically the only last good thing with that laptop is the keyboard. I still like to type on it, it's probably why I still like it even if it's all falling apart. But on the X230, they drop the keyboard, so now there is nothing that keep me with thinkpad. It's sad to say so, but thinkpad it's now something of the past. I will move on and try to find a nice laptop of a different brand. After 11months with that laptop I feel it's now the time to replace it (already), while before I was using them for 3 yrs. Also, I have move around with my T43 a lot more in the first month of it's use then this X220 during the last 11 months. Is it possible for lenovo to resell the brand of thinkpad back to IBM? It would be appreciated, thank you.
Now time to move on, goodbye lenovo, I miss Thinkpad.
    ThinkPad X220, I7 2620M, 8GB RAM, Intel 320 160GB SSD, IPS screen, USB 3.0, Bluethoot, Cam, Win 7 pro 64, BIOS: 1.17, Model: 4286-CTO, Fabrication date: 07/11

Lead is most certainly not the only X220 owner with a built X220. My X220i is fantastic. It's almost a year old and looks new. I'd agree the trackpad is not that great if you don't like the stick, but you can't have it all I guess.

  • Does anyone has had problems with cracks and damage to the trackpad?

is my first time with apple. I expected more quality, but my computer has presented cracks in several parts so inexplicable and never dropped, besides the Trackpad does not work well. I am disappointed

Contact Apple using expresslane.apple.com if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store or service provider to ask for an estimate.

  • How much to fix cracked trackpad outside of 1 yr warranty?

I bought my MacBook Pro in May 2011 and this evening I noticed the trackpad wasn't clicking as strongly as if normally does. Apparently I pressed too hard and now the trackpad is cracked at the bottom in the center (where everyone else's seems to be cracked). SInce I am outside of the 1 yr warranty, how much will it cost to fix?

They shouldnt crack under normal use. The key word is "normal".  I realize there's no point buying applecare.  My screen broke.  I had told an agent on applecare on the phone the day it happened, but couldnt tend to it bc of my circumstances.  The agent said he would make a note and not to worry. i was able to taake time to get it fixed bc i couldnt even notice it, but my friend made me realize it was apparent.  I dont have 20/20 vision and i never would have remembered.  finally, I went to apple on 14th st in manhattan and was told the crack came from an impact and was accidental damage.  I told the genius it was not impacted or damaged by anyone.  Thats how i bought it and there should actually be two  notes in their system that this was discussed previously.  The day before i went to apple, i was assured this wasnt a big deal..  the genius was, aside from rude, didnt give a fair argument. he said he wasnt saying i did it, but he was also saying he didnt know how it happened.  So, I was left with a $610 bill.  he told me to call amex since they cover this!  I'm pretty much through buying apples.
I also had an issue in regards to my cord fraying on my late 2010 macair.  I know as a fact I never did anything other than use that computer for possibly 1 hour a week.  I know the cords are fragile.  This was my second replacement.  But since this fray was in the middle if the cord, i was told it had to have been damaged by me.  Impossible.  I have a wire organizer box.  this has the cords loosely placed and not kinked or wrapped wrong.
    I had enough.

  • How much does Apple charge to replace cracked trackpad and keyboard

So some idiot decided to wreck a couple of keys off my macbook and brake the plastic on the back of the keys... and then decided to try and superglue it back on and whilst in the process managed to get a bit of glue in the top right section of the trackpad. Then went on to try and loosen it etc and in doing so managed to slightly crack that area on the upper right of the trackpad. My question is how much will apple charge me to replace keyboard and/or the trackpad?

Call your local Apple Store or take your computer in for an estimate. We can't give you an answer.

  • How much would it cost to replace a cracked trackpad on a 13 inch unibody Macbook Pro

I think I closed my laptop with something inside and when I reopened it, there was a fairly large crack in my trackpad on my 13 inch Macbook Pro. How much would it cost to get the trackpad replaced?

I suggest you take it the Apple Store and allow them to look at it. The may be much more damage then you are able to see.

  • Cracked Trackpad Covered By Apple Care?

I was playing a game the other day and I pressed the Trackpad pretty hard, I heard a crack noise and looked down in shock to see the Trackpad has cracked, I have Extended Apple Care and was wondering if this would be covered. Makes me wonder if glass is a good material for a trackpad...

only Apple can answer that.  Bring it in for evaluation.

  • Magic Trackpad Glass Cracked!

I've owned my Magic Trackpad for a good few months with no issues.  Today the glass has spontaneously cracked while I was cleaning it (I wasn't even rubbing hard, just applying light pressure to the bottom edge to rub off a piece of melted chocolate).
While navigating to this page to ask what to do, the crack has spread across the glass even further (each click caused another crack), to the point where I now have several hairline cracks across the surface of the trackpad (including one giant one from top to bottom).
The trackpad still works fine, but I'm not sure what to do about it.  Is this something that happens a lot? Will Apple replace it? Or am I stuck with a broken trackpad now?
I don't really want to fork out another £50 for a replacement, but I'm worried that I might cut my fingers if I keep using it.

I've checked iFixit and the Magic Trackpad glass surface can not be replaced.
A cheap solution (although not a perfect fix) would be to buy a 'skin'. This will cover the cracks visually and protect against accidental spill.
There's lots of choice - iCarbons, nuvango, etc.
