Traditional GPIB for SRQ instead of VISA

Hello,
I have a Program using the VISA GPIB for the SRQ to tell me when an instrument has completed a task. It is one VI used multiple times and the wait time varies. It works wothout any problems with VISA. When I tried to do it with Tradition GPIB it was a 50/50 shot of it working.
If I were to rewrite it for Traditional GPIB how would I read it? Currently I use the VISA Read STB, is there an equivalent in the traditional GPIB?

By "traditional GPIB" I assume you mean 488.1. There is a good tutorial on this site that might lead you in the right direction to answer your question. It is titled "Using Service Requests in your GPIB application" Hope this helps.

  • Will it be any different if I call GPIB function instead of VISA to write to the device?

    Hi all,
I am still using LV7. I have a function generator using GPIB interface. In the labview code, I use VISA write to send commands to the function generator. But I am reading some related documents about GPIB in labview. I wonder what's the advantage of using VISA instead of GPIB for communication, also the interface is actually GPIB so what's VISA really doing in this case? Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

VISA by itself does not provide instrumentation programming capability. VISA is a high-level API that calls into lower level drivers. The hierarchy of NI-VISA is shown in the figure below:
    Advantages of VISA:
    1. One of VISA’s advantages is that it uses many of the same operations to communicate with instruments regardless of the interface type.
    2. Another advantage of VISA is that it is an object-oriented language which will easily adapt to new instrumentation interfaces as they are developed in the future.

  • GPIB reads/writes compared with VISA reads/writes

    Hello all,
Being slightly new to LV (3 months of casual use, and 1 month of really getting to know it)...
I was just wonder what the difference between VISA reads/writes and GPIB reads/writes.
Actually this is my main question: Is the GPIB Write "data" parameter and the VISA Write "write buffer" parameter the exact same thing?
Would I write the exact same command with either parameter and get essentially the same effect (if all parameters are correct?).
I have a list of GPIB commands that I want to use to write drivers for  a PSA, and I really want to use VISA, and not have to change my paradigm of thinking.
I would hope they are quite similar.  In fact, my research is telling me that GPIB is almost like a subset of VISA?
    Thanks for your help.

The data you write with the GPIB functions is identical to the data you write with VISA. There are some things that are a bit easier to use the traditional GPIB calls but for 99+% of the time, VISA will do the trick. VISA was originally conceived as a common api for GPIB and VXI instruments. The first VXI instruments were basically the same GPIB instruments without a power supply and the user interface (buttons, screen, etc.) but they required different drivers. VISA permitted a single driver to be used for both types of instruments. Now, VISA has expanded to include serial, Ethernet, USB, and PXI and not having to change your "paradigm of thinking" is one of the big reasons that VISA is so widely used.

  • I want to help with the translations of Tradition Chinese for Photoshop Touch for phone application

    Hi there,
My name is Richard and I have been using your Photoshop Touch For phone app for quite some time.
This is a great app but there is just one little thing that maybe you can make this app better by adding other languages.
I am not really good at English so I have translated your app into Traditional Chinese for my personal use.
I see that this app is only in English, it is quite inconvenient for people who don't understand English.
So I am hoping if I can help and participate with Traditional Chinese traslation for this app in your next release.
If you do so it's an great honor for me because I really like your app!
Should I just attach the folders for the translations or do you have a website that I can just put all the translation in?
I hope to hear from you soon
    Thanks
    Riachard

I've been having big issues with installing and reinstalling iTunes. I found the same site that gives instructions on uninstalling everything, and I did it in the right order, then I reinstalled iTunes onto the computer, and it worked.
The only problem with all of this is that every time I connect my iTouch to the computer, this alert pops up:
"This iPod cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64-bit version of iTunes."
Whenever I try to download iTunes, I always get warnings that tell me to download the "64-bit" version, because the version that's being installed was meant for a 32-bit computer. I always tell the computer to continue installing iTunes anyway, because otherwise I just have to start all over again for the same results.
After everything's installed, I get another warning that tells me that iTunes was not installed correctly, and that I need to reinstall it.
So basically, everything works fine despite the warnings, up until I actually try to sync songs to my iPod Touch.
Do you have any idea what the "64-bit" version is or how I could download that version instead of whatever version I've been trying to install??
Any help at all would be great, if you can. Thanks.

You create the usernames and passwords where you host your website. Made with or without iWeb.
Usually it's done in the controlpanel where you manage your account.
If you cannot do it there, you'll have to do it yourself. See this post :

  • Making package(s) for x86 instead of 686

I have a need to build a custom version of a couple of Arch packages for use on a special purpose Live CD - these packages are NOT for installing or running on my regular Arch distro itself.
The ONLY thing I want to customize for each package is to change it from  being able to run *exclusively* on i686 to just being *optimized* for i686 (but able to run on older processors such as i586). i586 is as far back as I need to go actually.
The way I've tried this is to:
    1. copy the standard Arch abs directory for the package in question over to another location (in /var/abs/local).
    2. edit /etc/makepkg.conf so that the "export CFLAGS" and "export CXXFLAGS" lines specify "optimized for 686" instead of "exclusively 686"
    3. build the package with makepkg.
The build works fine, but looking at the results, the binaries in the custom package seem to be identical to the binaries in the standard package (same size etc.). I would expect to see some difference, and I don't have a way to test the custom package's binaries at the moment.
Question: Is the above all I need to do for this purpose, or is there a better, more correct way to do this.? IOW, have I missed something?
    Thanks,
    Tom

Snowman wrote:Instead of comparing the binairies size, do a diff on them. From what I can see, you seem to be using the correct method.
Yes, the binaries were all exactly the same, byte for byte.
But.....when I tried a couple of other packages doing it the same way, I got results more like I expected -  some of the binaries were clearly different etc., and I could also see the CFLAGS parameters from makepkg.conf getting picked up by the makefiles in the package's source directory.
The first package (where I saw no differences) was udev, and it looks like its Makefile just ignores those exported values from /etc/makepkg.conf. In fact the man page for makepkg warns that this can happen with some packages...
I guess I could edit the makefile manually, or maybe it just doesn't matter in that case. Not sure, but testing should tell the story. Anyway, thanks for the response.

I deleted my iphotos app off my mac by mistake. i was wondering if there is a way for me to download it for free instead having to pay for it off of appstore?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
iPhoto comes for free with every new Mac, so you don't have to pay.
If your Mac didn't come with DVDs or it came with OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, open the Mac App Store, log in with the Apple ID you used to register the computer, go to Purchases and download iPhoto free of charge.
If your Mac came with DVDs or you bought iLife in a DVD, insert the DVD and reinstall iPhoto. Then, open  > Software Update, and install the most recent version

  • Why should we go for job instead of trigger

    hi all,
whats the exact purpose of job n trigger?
why should we go for job instead of trigger?
any one pls help me regarding this
    thnaks in advance.

When you have code that is to be called, implementing it with a trigger leaves the process synchronous. In other words: the code is executed within the same transaction as the invoking code. This means real-time, but it makes your transaction heavier. Implementing it with a job, makes it asynchronous. In other words: the code gets executed in another session. Now it is not real-time anymore, but since it is executed in the background, nobody cares anymore how long it takes (to a certain point of course).
    Regards,
    Rob.

Using OSX 10.9.4 and want to have photoshop as my default for photos instead of Preview. Any suggestions?

In the Mac Finder, select the icon of any of your photo files and do a Get Info (Command i) on it. Then select the application you want to open your photo files, then Click on Change All.
You'll need to do this once for an icon of each file type, i.e. one on a JPEG file, one on a TIFF, one for PSD, one for raw files, etc.
