how to copy CSV file from windows to UNIX server?Using scp (secure copy).
It is supported by Putty and ssh services are available by default on most (if not all) modern Unix servers.
Don't have a Windows machine close by, but I recall the scp command is supported by the Putty executable called "+pscp.exe+".
    The syntax is very simple:
    scp <from_destination> <to_destination>
example (pushing a file from Windows to Oracle Unix server)
scp c:\datafiles\accounts.csv [email protected]:/u01/files/accounts.csv This will prompt for a password.
You also can use ssh trusted certificates (RSA or DSA keys) to automate this. Using Putty you can generate a key pair that consists of a private key and public key.
You copy and paste the public key into the destination server's +$HOME/.ssh/authorized_keys+ file. This results the server in trusting that client and allows the client to connect (using ssh, scp and sftp) without having to supply a password (as the private part of the key serves as authentication). (I would however not use the oracle account for this, but a special scp-copy usage Unix account that does not support shell usage)
If you want to automate it the other way around - have the Unix server pull the file from the Windows client, then you need to install server software on that Windows machine to allow it to provide such a file copy service.
Again I suggest using ssh - OpenSSH is available for a variety of platforms, and Windows should be included. If not, there should be ssh service for Windows from Microsoft or another vendor that can be used.
Any other method than ssh will be either insecure or problematic. FTP is insecure as usernames and passwords are transmitted in clear text. Using Windows File Sharing requires Samba to be loaded and configured on the Unix server - and this is extra work installing and configuring and testing s/w that uses a low level security, that is also proprietary and could required setting on the Windows client also to make it work in a somewhat robust fashion.
The standard today is ssh. It is robust and secure. And it makes a lot of sense to use it.. and pretty good motivation for not using it ifo something else.

  • Why, when transferring files from windows to OX OS, I can't view jpegs

I just recently purchased a new IMac Air and I am trying to transfer files from my old PC to my Mac Air. Whe loading jpegs, I get an error meesage when opening them up. The error message indicates that jpegs are a file that preview does not recognize. I transferred the files using a USB memory stick.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for any help.

OK, thanks for that, but im sill unable to read the windows eudora files in eudora for OS X.
First ive used BBedit and textwrangler to open the windows eudora .mbx files. Then ive saved them without the .mbx line and moved them into the Eudora folder --> Mail Folder. What happend here is that when running Eudora the the single mail files in that individual mailbox file become one huge file, with all the text flowing on from one to the other in the same file.
Next, i tried FTPing between windows and OS X. I did this, making sure i was uploading from the pc in ASCII. Pulling them down into the mac, removing the .mbx and transferring to the Mail Folder of the Eudora Folder and then opening eduora, these files are not recognised at all.
Any further help will be most appreciated!

  • Transferring files from Windows, names of songs not correct in iTunes

so I have my music on an external hard drive from my windows machines. The songs 'file names' (what you see on the HD) are correct. When I tried to bring some over to iTunes, via add to library, the info was added as 'Track 1" ect, with no artist or album info. In the itunes music folder, it was sorted as the artist folder (I copied and pasted from my HD)...
I also tried to 'import' from itunes, and still the info was not correct.. when I tried the advance button to get cd info, itunes told me I couldn't do it because i didn't import with itunes, even though I did import from the external HD with itunes....what is going on? Does the 'get track listings' onlyl work if you are importing CDs?
Also since itunes just looked at the files as 'track 1' etc, that means the MP3 file did not have the correct tags, so I have re-enter everything? That the files I was seeing was just the names I gave the MP3? Does this mean I have to go back and enter the correct info for all those mp3 that itunes read as "track 1" "track 2" etc?
    TIA

new macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It sounds like the artist and track names are part of the file name and your Windows player was grabbing that info from the track names. iTunes does not use file names to supply such information and instead uses standard internal tags to hold this information and when you imported the tracks into iTunes it supplied some default info. You will need to edit the tags using a tag editor, such as the one built into iTunes or an external one such as can be found on VersionTracker.
Gracenote lookups can only be done on tracks and albums that were directly imported by iTunes from the original CD. Importing music files from any other source cannot be looked up.
If you still have access to a Windows machine, you could try running the files through MusicBrainz using Magic MP3 Tagger. I have not had much luck identifying taggless or unknown songs using iEatBrainz for the Mac (these programs are available on MusicBrainz).
There are some scripts in the Managing Track Info section of Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes that will copy filenames to track tags that can automate converting filenames to tags, but there are limitations on what can be done and you will still need to manually clean up the data and to add tags that cannot be added using such a script.

  • Transferring files from windows media player

how do i transfer all my library from windows media player and napster into itunes? when i first hooked up my ipod to my computer it prompted me to convert my whole library but now i can't figure out how to do it again.
    thanks

how do i transfer all my library from windows media player and napster into itunes?
For songs you ripped yourself from CD, you simply find the WMA files and drag them into the iTunes library. It'll convert them.
For songs you purchased on Napster and such, you can't. Napster and Wal-Mart and all those stores that sell WMA files are incompatible with iTunes and the iPod. Don't buy from those services in the future.

  • Help with transferring files from Windows to MacBook Pro

Just got a new MacBook Pro and need to transfer files from a very old Windows operating machine. Have the Seagate Slim portable drive.  I downloaded the online software to format it for the windows files (taking 4 hours).  Now, I'm told it will not work on the Apple product.  Has anyone used this and had success? Or is there an easier way?

  • Transfering files from Windows machine freezes my wi-fi connection

Guys, this is very weird, and it started to happen a week ago.
I use finder to connect to my windows machine on my home network, and after typing my password, I get access to the folder in the windows machine that I want.
The problem is: any file I try to transfer FROM or TO the windows PC freezes up mac os X after some seconds of transfer ... like a 60 mb file, it freezes after 20mb have been transfered ... and that's not only it ...
It freezes mac os x until I get the message "Connection to server LOST", and I only can get back on the network if I literally shut down my wi-fi router, because my macbook simply can't get DNS ip assigned again, it always auto-assign some weird ip and doesn't come back to the network till I restart my wi-fi router.
What in the **** may be going on ? Remember, it started to happen lately, it was not like this before !

  • Transfering files from Windows Dreamweaver CS5.5 to build apps on MAC

I am considering upgrading to CS5.5 to take advantage of Dreamweaver's new Phonegap features.
    I am a Windows user.
I know I can't build iOS APPS on Windows but can I move th files I have built to a MAC with a development envvironment and build the APP there ?
    Thanks
    Phil Stern

Depends on what you're wanting to build. HTML5 webpages are cross-browser/ cross-device compatible and will work across iOS, Android & BlackBerry (modify with WebWorks) models.
In this case, a HTML editor is recommended. If you do not have DW on the Mac, you could copy the projects folder from localhost ROOT and open it with any HTML editor.
I think you're confusing yourself with the iOS build here. There is no such thing as a 'native' Mac environment to build iOS webpages. Webpages made with any HTML editor will open on iOS.
If you're talking about building iOS Apps, you need to download XCode and other related iOS SDK's to start. This link should give you an insight: https://developer.apple.com/devcenter/ios/index.action

Run this command. It will give the missing file

    Then run this command

  • I transferred big files from windows to my macbook, should I install anti-virus on macbook pro?

I transferred big files from windows to my macbook because I wanted to retire my old PC, should I install anti-virus on macbook pro because of those files I moved? Would you recommend? Or should I feel comfortable since I'm using OS X Mavericks? Anybody with the same case? Thanks.

Files moved from a Windows machine may contain malware, but that malware would not be a threat to your Mac. Windows malware cannot infect a Mac.

  • Can't copy some files from Windows 7 to Mac OSX over network

    Hi,
I'm running the latest version of Max OSX v10.8.4 on a brand new Macbook Pro.
I have followed the setup instructions at http://www.7tutorials.com/how-change-workgroup-mac-os-x-easy-networking to access my Macbook from Windows, and http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/24950/how-to-share-a-folder-in-os-x-with-windows/ to share some folders from my Macbook to Windows.
I am now trying to copy some files from my Windows 7 Pro (SP1) computer to my Mac, and have hit the following problems:
I can view my Macbook in my list of local networked computers on WIndows, but I cannot access it. Clicking on it causes Windows 7 to try and access it, but then I get a message after a minute saying the network path could not be found. However, if I manually enter the IP address of my Macbook in the Windows address bar (\\192.168.0.191), I can view and access all the shared folders. I can never access the Macbook via it's computer name (\\MACBOOK-ROB).
I cannot copy some files from Windows to my Macbook shared folders via Windows. There is nothing to distinguish these files from the hundereds of other files that I have successfully copied to my Macbook. They are pictures and music with no special characters in the filenames, not overly long filenames or folder paths, no access restrictions, or any other security restriction that I can see. However, every single attempt to copy these files to my Macbook results in WIndows reporting that access to the destination was denied.
I have tried both these above scenarios on WiFi and Ethernet, and the results are the same.
    So:
Why am I unable to access my Macbook by it's computer name on the network? How can Windows see it, but not access it?
What are the limitations on transferring files over SMB that is (presumably) causing these specific files to fail?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

I have a fix for inability to copy files. I had the same problem moving a lot of old files across my LAN from a Windows XP machine to a Mac Mini running Mountain Lion. After confirming copy of some special file, I would get an error that terminated the copy operation, and info on the Mac side would show a locked folder.
I finally decided to eliminate all special files on the Windows side, before copying, by running
         attrib -s -h -r /s /d [drive or folder]\*.*
in a command window. Running attrib /?  tells what the arguments mean, but it doesn't explain that you need the *.* to make the command go through the hierarchy clearing the special attributes on all the files.
After I did that, and then used drag and drop between two Windows Explorer windows (one on the Windows drive, on on the target drive on the Mac), the whole move operation ran to completion without stopping either for error or to ask for confirmation.
I do not have a fix for the inability to access some computers by name rather than by IP address. I'm looking into the possibility of activating bind on the Mac but I haven't done anything yet.
