Transferring from hard drive to itunes

A friend downloaded a heap of albums for me on a removable hard drive -itunes has down loaded the covers but not the music -how do I get to download the music. I am not computer literate . Many thanks

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • How to option+delete (delete from hard drive) in iTunes 12?

In all prior versions of iTunes it was possible to option+delete a single or multiple tracks, which allowed users to delete the 'physical' files from their drives, as well as from the iTunes Library.
In iTunes 12, this option has seem to have disappeared (?)
I've just updated to Yosemite (hence iTunes 12), and have changed nothing in my iTunes preferences since this post: iTunes 11.1.2 not registering new ID3 v2.4 tags (Deleting music from both library and HDD), where I had the same issue with deleting tracks from the hard drive.
Has the keyboard shortcut been removed in iTunes 12???
This is the warning dialog when 'option+deleting' a certain track: (which doesn't delete the file from the drive, but only the library)

Yes, that's how it's supposed to work. But it doesn't. Or it does only sometimes. Here's what indeed is supposed to be available when right-clicking:
Obviously I can click "delete" and it will ask me if I really want to and whether to send to trash, etc etc.
However, here's how it works with the next item down:
Sorry, I know that these are Mac screenshots, but this is the only place I found the problem described. If nothing else, let them serve as evidence that we aren't just imagining the problem.

  • Unable to add music from hard drive to iTunes

I have recently upgraded to iTunes 7.01 add for some reason my music was missing from the itunes library. I cannot add any of the files from the hard drive to the itunes library. They are all files that I have copied over from CD and there was no issues with them in itunes 6. Any help would be appreciated.

Solved. I changed the iT folder and my iP got lost the connection with the proper library. Had to change it back and re-connect to the correct library.

  • Music files deleted from hard drive and iTunes library

Often, after iTunes software updates, I find that some of my music files that have been uploaded from cds are completely erased from my music library and from my external hard drive, where I keep all my music. I always make sure I turn on the external drive before opening iTunes, and I quit iTunes before turning off the external drive.
So why is my music disappearing?! Where does it go? This has been a problem for a long time and I can't find any solutions online. Please help! Thank you!

When you have the unit in the dock, anytime you sync, you have to make sure that it will sync again to the folder. If it isn't set to sync the same folder where you had the music sync before, it'll delete the file.
That's just the way it's set up. So you have be conscious of it.

When I copy a file it is not transfering to the library.
    Can you offer assistance?

  • Can't copy mp3s from hard drive to iTunes like I used to

    Hi all,
Using itunes before I was able to open my music folder, select the tracks I wanted to listen to and just drop them in itunes - like drag and drop. Now whenever I try to do it, the cursor turns into a cricle with a line through it.
The thing is, it only stated happening after I loaded songs onto my ipod. Any clues? Thanks.

No, I'm just dragging them from the music folder to the iTunes player. I was doing this before without a problem and now it just doesn't work. I was using 7.1 before and thought maybe if I updated to 7.2 it would work again - but no such luck.
I didn't want to import the files, because the drag and drop method is faster and convenient (for me anyways). I also dragged and dropped my music files from the music folder to the iPod... it doesn't allow me to do this either. Thanks for the help!

  • Transferring songs from hard drive to new iPod

Will I have trouble transferring my songs from an external hard drive to a new iPod classic.  If so, any solutions?

As long as you import these songs from the external hard drive to iTunes first, you shouldn't.  Just make sure your iPod is configured to sync all of these new tracks via its Summary and specifically Music configuration tabs in iTunes.

  • Deleting a song from iTunes library and hard drive on Itunes 11.0

how do i delete a song from iTunes library and hard drive on Itunes 11.0 at the same time.

    Hello CleveCo, Inc
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
At some point in time, you may have selected the option to prevent that dialog from appearing again when trying to delete tracks from your library. To reset all of iTunes warning dialogs, click the Edit drop down menu and choose Preferences from the list (on a Mac it is *iTunes -> Preferences* ). When the window pops up, head over to the Advanced tab and click the *Reset Warnings* button. Then quit iTunes and relaunch it. That do the trick for you?

  • Why has iTunes seperated a album which I have copied over from my external hard drive into iTunes? How can you pull all the songs back together into one album again?

Why has iTunes seperated a album into indevidual songs, which I have copied over from my external hard drive into iTunes? How can you pull all the songs back together into one album again?

Quick answer:  Select all the tracks on the album, File > get info, and either give them all a single "album artist", or check the "compilation" flag (as in https://discussions.apple.com/message/17670085).
If these are from multiple-CD sets you may also need to enter the appropriate information in the disc number fields.  If they are not a multiple CD set you still need to make sure the disc number fields are set correctly or all empty.

  • Can i show and play music from my external hard drive in iTunes without adding it to my Mac hard drive?

I have more music than I can keep on my Macbook hard drive by over 200GB. I'm hoping to be able to show and play all music from my external hard drive in iTunes without having to add any of it to my Macbook Hard Drive

    Hello B3NN13,
If you would like to add the music from your external hard drive to iTunes without copying it to the iTunes Library on your internal hard drive, you may find the following article helpful:
Add files to your library without adding them to your iTunes folder
When you add an item already on your computer to your iTunes library, iTunes places a copy of the file in your iTunes folder. The original file remains in its current location.
You can change this setting so that files are added to your iTunes library without being added to the iTunes folder. You might want to do this, for example, if you prefer to store video files on an external disk but still want to view them in iTunes.
Choose iTunes > Preferences, and click Advanced.
Deselect the checkbox next to “Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.”
From now on, when you drag a file to your library or choose File > Add to Library, the item appears in iTunes, but the actual file isn’t copied or moved.
Tip: You can temporarily reverse this setting by holding down the Option key while you drag files to the iTunes window.

  • Copying Large Blocks of MP3 files from External Hard Drive to iTunes

I'm trying to copy large numbers of MP3 files from my external
hard drive to iTunes. I tried putting them in the iTunes music folder but this did not work. Then I tried selecting blocks of the songs and dragging and dropping them in iTunes. This also did not work because when I select a large block of files and then click on them (holding down the mouse button) to drag them, then they become "unselected." So, I guess my question is 2 fold: Why can I not copy and paste these files to some folder on the Macintosh Hard drive where they will be recognized by iTunes (show up in iTunes) and what is wrong with my clicking and dragging technique? Am I losing it?

If you are trying to add tunes to your library then do the work from within iTunes not via the Finder. Droping the tunes into the iTunes folder will not create a reference for iTunes to find the tunes. You should be able to drag-drop the tunes/folders into the main iTunes window.
It is usually easier to use the 'keep' and 'copy' features selected. This way iTunes will keep your tunes organized and all in one place. If you work from in the iTunes interface then you will likely not go wrong.
From the iTunes File menu select 'add to library' (+O) and navigate to your ext HD and iTunes should bring those tunes into your library.

  • Transferred songs to external hard drive, now iTunes can not locate files??

I transferred all my song files using various tutorials on the site, I consolidated my library, etc. The external harddrive was referred to as "F:" when I did this.
Later when I downloaded a few podcasts with my external HD disconnected, they were stored on my c: harddrive. At that point I had iTunes files on both my C: drive and F: drive (with the F: drive being disconnected at the time).
Now my external harddrive when connected is referred to as "G:" by my pc, and iTunes could not find any of my songs previously transferred to F:. I went to preferences/advanced again and selected G:/iTunes as my new folder location, and now only SOME of my songs are located by iTunes, not all. I'm completely confused.
    Any advice? Thanks.
    Completely frustrated,
    Andy
      Windows XP

Just a refining comment: iTunes recognizes some, but not all, songs that were transferred to the new hard drive, following iTune's instructions to change the directory then consolidate the library.
I am baffled why iTunes recognizes some songs, but not others, within the same folder....
The easy solution would be to use "import folder" and re-import the entire iTunes files on my harddrive, and then delete the duplicates, which would include the ones non-findable by iTunes. But then my playlists would be affected. I guess I'd have to re-build my playlists manually, using the new imported files in place of the files that iTunes can't recognize, prior to deleting all the duplicate non-findable files.
Argh, I hate pc's...thru & thru...any suggestions before I spend a few hours re-building my playlists and deleting the non-findable song files??
    Thanks...

  • I can't load some content from my external hard drive to itunes,

I can't load some content from 1 of my external hard drive to itunes, it can see it and try to load the folder / files but it doesn't appear, these files worked recently as some of them are currently on my ipod touch - I had to factory restore my laptop this week (virus) so have been trying to put everything back on to sync ipod - any ideas???

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.
    Ciao.
