Transparency and flattener question when sending to publication

Mac OS X 4.11 InDesign CS3
I have a half page ad. A photo takes up roughly the top half, text the bottom half. Inside the photo at the bottom of the photo there is a white headline with a soft shadow. The text in the bottom half of the ad is on a layer above everything else. In the flattener preview the text does not appear to be affected. It shows up as gray. I think this indicates the text is not to be rasterized. If I move the text to the bottom layer on the bottom of the stacking order, the text appears red in the flattener preview. The publication says Acrobat Pro is showing "transparency" problems, specifically the text area. Is it possible they're not reading the transparency flattener display in Acrobat Pro correctly?

Acrobat's flattener preview isn't 100% reliable. It sometimes highlights type or vector elements that won't actually be affected. When in doubt, they can place the PDF page in InDesign and view it with ID's flattener preview for a more accurate display.

I'm using AI CS3 on PC. I've been given an EPS file that was apparently created in AI 11 on Mac. It has no preview (at least not that will show up on PC).
I opened the file in AI to save it with a preview. When I do a Save As, AI says:
"When spot colors are used with transparency, changing them to process colors outside of Illustrator can generate unexpected results."
Does this mean I need to change all of the spot colors in the file to CMYK? The file has been used as-is in the past apparently with no repercussions.
Then AI says:
"The document contains artwork that requires flattening."
What should I do? I find the whole business of transparency and flattening confusing.
I COULD just use the original EPS file as-is, but I really hate not having a preview.
FWIW, the EPS will be used in an existing Quark file.

The first message is just a warning. If you intend to keep the spot color(s) on press, there should be no conversion to process involved. If there is going to be a conversion down the line, you're better off dealing with it within Illustrator. That's what the warning is trying to tell you.
My guess with the second message is that it has to do with the improved transparency flattening options in newer versions of Illustrator. The document uses transparency, and that means flattening is required (because PostScript does not support transparency).
I would just let Illustrator do its thing and save out your new EPS with the Windows-compatible preview. If the file was used in the past without problems, you probably don't have to do anything within Illustrator. However, if you see a lot of transparency features in use, you might want to flatten more aggressively, even if that means further tipping the balance away from vector toward raster and ending up with a larger file.
The preview really won't tell you much (other than position) once in Quark, so make sure you output a proof -- at least to Adobe PDF. Check to make sure each spot color in your Illustrator file goes to its own 'plate' out of Quark.

I am using windows Vista and having this problem also (not exactly, but iTunes gives pop-up that "files are in use"). Acting a suggestion from another answer in this thread, I clicked on Computer and selected eject...windows did warn me that the device was in use, but also gave me a CONTINUE button, which I clicked and it was ejected...had to go back to iTunes and eject the iPod there also, but it did eject

Why is it when I download music to my iTunes an explanation mark comes up on some of my music. And another question when I move some music to my iPod I can not play it because this little circle comes up

When I can download music to my iPod some of the music downloads but I can not play it because it has this little round circle in front of it ansd the music is greyed out and not black lettering like the other songs I can play.

Insert the flash drive into the other computer, and open it so it looks like a window. Highlight the songs you want in his iTunes, and drag them into that window.
That will cause them to copy onto the flash drive, and will not affect his library.
If you normally run iTunes in full-screen mode, make it smaller so that you can do the drag.

Apple Mail and gmail bug when sending attachment?

Hi,
And now for my own Mail question. Wondering if others have run into this bug?
Mac OS 10.5 MacBook Pro.
There seems to be a bug when trying to send Mail with an attachment (via a gmail account).
Over and over, Mail just hangs there.
But it works when:
1. Using Mail, the same email can be sent when I Remove the attachment.
2. Skipping Mail, and using gmail itself, the email and attachment are sent within seconds.
2. Email with attachment can also be sent from another email service (such as Earthlink).
Only when I am using Apple Mail, sending via gmail, With an attachment, is there a hitch.

Perhaps this problem is confined to Mail 3.0 and later, and Leopard. I cannot send attachments using gmail as the smtp server. I can log in to my gmail account, download an attachment, and send, with no problem as Ross has experienced. I get an eternal hang when trying to send the same message with an attachment from Mail. Any solutions yet? Thanks!

Transparency and colour question

Hello - I would like to mix colour in Flash using
transparency to create something like
this
(no interactivity required):
If I create Cyan, Magenta and Yellow movie clips and change
the Alpha transparency, obviously the whole colour becomes lighter
(and the layered colours don't merge well). Is there any simple way
to do this, preferably using transparency, although I am prepared
to accept this is not possible. I have tried using masks, but I may
be overcomplicating things and am unable to get my head around what
is required. I found a movie showing that
it
is doable.
Any ideas?

Hello, you can achieve that by utilizing the blend mode in
Flash 8. If you create movie clips from the 3 items then apply a
multiply blend to each, you'll get what you're looking for. See my

2 new and strange things when sending attachments

Hello,
I can't isolate what caused any change but suddenly on my computer at my office, when I try to add an attachment, with no body copy, it will not show. I am forced to type at least 1 letter in the body for the attachment to appear when I upload it, then I remove the typed letter.
Coincidentally, if I add an attachment to an existing body of copy, the attachment only shows up at the end of the letter. Previously, I could insert an attachment where ever I placed the cursor. No more.
More oddly, this does not happen at all on my home computer which has the same OS System and mail.
Have I accidentally hit a preference and changed my email? Please let me know if this sounds familiar. Or please inform me how to rebuild my mail settings.

I just printed your front panel on a HP Color Laserjet 4500 and got an accurate printout. My Deskjet 932 ink jet do okay except for the colors. So much is dependent on the printer and it's driver. If it's a low res ink jet and you've got a high res screen, then compromises have to made in translating that high resolution image to a low resolution output. There are printer options (standard, postscript, bitmap) that you can experiment with and I'm sure your printer has settings that can be adjusted as well. You could also look for an updated printer dirver or try a different printer.

2. Try a reset. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple Logo

When I add a watermark and flatten the transparency, it duplicates the file within the file.

After doing so, use the Save As command to save the file under a new name.
This should optimize it and reduce the file's size, sometimes dramatically.

The send and spell check options are next to each other. I can not tell you how many times I hit the send button be accident. When sending, and question of 'Are you sure you want to send now?', should be asked.

Actually, unless something has changed, you can set Thunderbird to run an automatic spell check when you click Send. That might be your best workaround.
Tools menu > Options > Composition panel > Spelling mini-tab
(You can display the classic menu bar by tapping the Alt key)
It might also be possible to customize the toolbar, but I think this might be safer.
Regarding a general confirmation for sending, I noticed some add-ons for that, but I don't have any personal recommendations.

The iPhone remembers information about previous contacts.
Complelely independently, you have a Contacts app with a contacts list. It sounds like your contacts list has 3 names on it. You need to add a few names.
