Transport.send(Message) sends mail but throws exception

Is it possible in any scenario that Transport.send(Message) method deliveres the message successfully, but throws an exception also?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, but only if you've configured it to do so.
See the javadocs for the com.sun.mail.smtp package for the property
you can set to cause it to do that.
If you haven't set that property and you're seeing that behavior, please provide
more detail, including especially the protocol trace.

So basically i have a problem that has been reported, but none of the answers solved in my case.
I'm trying to send a mail with attachment using java mail, and it hangs in the transport.Send without sending an exception.
I've put the debug to true to try to understand what's going on and the result that i get is this:
DEBUG: not loading system providers in <java.home>/lib
DEBUG: not loading optional custom providers file: /META-INF/javamail.providers
DEBUG: successfully loaded default providers

DEBUG: not loading optional address map file: /META-INF/javamail.address.map
i've tried set the both connection timeout proprieties to 5000 but it stil does nott generate an exception. i've tried to chage the try catch block to catch Exception rather than MessagingException but it still does not generate an exception.
So i have another environment where using the same mail server and code it is working and i.ve generated the debug message and the next message is
DEBUG: getProvider() returning javax.mail.Provider[TRANSPORT,smtp,com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPTransport,Sun Microsystems, Inc]
I don't understand why it blocks here and why this message is not shown. i don't think its a connection problem. maybe a configuration issue, so i'm triyng to understand whats going wrong.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Based on the debug output, you're using a very old version of JavaMail. You should consider upgrading.
The debug output shows no attempt to connect to any server, so it appears that something is going wrong even before then.
If the program is really blocked, try to get a stack trace showing where it's blocked.
Also, try catching Throwable to make sure you're not missing some kind of unexpected failure.
Do you have a standalone application, or is it running in some sort of application server?
What version of the JDK are you using?

Hey phillipfrompaupack,
I see that you are having issues with your mail in Yosemite. Here is an article for you that will help you troubleshoot these issues:

• Mail app won't send mail, but it will receive mail

The mail app on my macbook pro and iphone will not send mail, but they can recieve mail. I deleted both accounts and reloaded them and they still won't work. After that I ran repair permissions and it found nothing wrong. Has anyone experienced this problem and how can I fix this?

I had same problem with my MBA and Mac Desktop (don't have iPhone)...could receive but not send emails after Lion upgrade. I only experienced it at home versus at work (inconsistently on both on my macbook air and my desktop mac).
For me the solution was when you compose an email there are two dropdown listboxes next to From: ...in the second one select smtp.me.com:yourusername Until Apple makes a change you might need to do that each time you send or reply to a message.
I think it has something to do with if you don't do that then port 25 might get used which can be blocked by a lot of ISPs.
Apple support helped me solve this problem and said it was a known issue they are working on.
Hope this helps with your issue!

Here is what I did to resolve the problem:
In Mail/preferences/accounts/account information/ and at the bottom of the box there is a toggle arrow up and down to edit the outgoing mail server, check the box "use only this server" and hit this toggle button and select "edit SMTP Server List" at the very bottom of the email names.
Select Advanced tab. Correct and/or add usernames and passwords as needed for each email account. Be sure to select OK each time to get the passwords to hold! Some changes don't seem to hold unless you click OK before you move on.
To test: Window/activity (a little windows will pop up showing activity bars) and then "get mail" button. This should show any problems
Another test:  window/connection doctor
This shouldl fix both pop and imap. so far it worked on yahoo, mobile me, gmail, hotmail, and others. Of course, you will need to know the incoming and outgoing mail server info, user name, and passwords.
Too bad we have to go though hoops to use an email program that used to work well. Worse yet, many may not know for days that their email isn't working.
This is easy method of setting up your email accounts but may not allow enough detail to make the mail accounts function properly in Mail 5.0:

Cannot send mail but can receivr mail

I had this problem, too, when I took my laptop to work and tried to send mail using their wireless settings. (I have never had this problem with wireless internet at home.) After a lot of research it appeared to be a port issue. Apple and Yahoo directed me to contact AT&T, my email server provider, to inquire if there was another port setting or off-line port that could be used. This turned out to be too complicated because I had to get my boss's wireless codes, etc. I got around the whole thing by logging into my email through Yahoo rather than Apple's Mail program. This allowed me to send emails at work with no problems. Hope this helps.

• TS3276 I cannot send mail but i do receive it

I cannot send mail but do recieve it, what do I write in Imap path prefix?

Oh, its not as "strange" as you might think.
The problem is SPAM. Internet Service Provider (ISPs) are struggling to prevent outsiders - or their own customers - from sending huge amounts of SPAM.
To do this, they have to make regular changes to how e-mail is handled. My guess, based on what you have told me so far, is that your ISP has made a change to how e-mails are sent.
This means you have to find out what that change was and adjust your Mail account settings. Hopefully your ISP has a "Support" web page where there is a step-by-step How To document that will lead you through this.

Hi - please help, I can't seem to send mails but I can receive them and surf the net?

You need to open Mail>Preferences>Accounts>"Account Information" tab>and there input the required information for your Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). Your Internet Service Provider will have the required information to give you to input here. Make sure that you also click at the end of the line "Outgoing Mail Server" on the arrows to get the dropdown list, and there click on "Edit SMTP Server List" and fill in the data in that resulting window also.

• Sender Mail Adapter Error: exception caught during processing mail message;

HI , I am configuring mail to file scenario. Need to read mail content (no need to capture From,TO or Subject details) and create a file with the content in the mail.
Need to read mails from microsoft outlook. Exchange server has been configured for POP3 protocol.
Following are the details provoding in sender mail adapter:
URL: provided url in the format: pop://<server name>
Authentication method: plain
provided user credinetions to access mails.
poll interval - 1min
content encoding none.
processing parameters : quality of service-exactly once
Since there is no need to capture From,TO or Subject details, didn't select the option - use mail package.
Verified for unread mails in the mail box and made sure that there are few unread mails.
Also, created data types and other components in IR and completed mapping.
But after starting sender mail communication channel, getting error "exception caught during processing mail message; java.lang.NullPointerException" in RWB-adapter-communication channel monitoring.
please let me know what needs to be done to resolve this error.
Thanks.

HI Stefan, i tried, but still it is giving same error. Yes, i am able to access outlook mail with the user credentials given in the communication channel to access exchange server.
I am using message protocol: xipayload . Also since i dont have to capture TO,from,subject details., created data type just with one element of type string, not in the standard format .Does this makes any difference.

• Error in SEND MAIL step with exception 1001

Hi Experts,
I am getting exception 1001, error message Document <&> could not be sent
when I put my user id in SEND MAIL step. In the same workflow,I put my user id at an activity step,and I am sucessfully receiving work item generated at that activity step in SAP Business workplace inbox.
Can anyone please tell me why exception is happening in SEND MAIL step.
Thanks,
Sonali.

Hi Surjith,
Firstly Workflow was running fine till yesterday.
Secondly, I put expression &_WF_INITIATOR& in the Send Mail step. Notification should go to my SAP business workplace->inbox->Document. But it is not going. Exception 1001 is happening.
But in the same workflow, just at the immediate next activity step I put &_WF_INITIATOR& again as agent. And I am successfully receiving workitem in SAP business workplace->inbox->workflow for this activity step.
Please guide me how to resolve the issue and why suddenly it is happening so.
Thanks,

Iam sending a mail with some chinese characters in the subject field..internally these chineese characters are converting in to html unicode format like(主).
the code goes like this :
MimeMessage message =new MimeMesage();
String subject=主的电
message.setSubject(subject,"utf-8");
......remaining are setted properly i mean from ,to using InternetAddress
Multipart multipart = new MimeMultipart();
BodyPart messageBodyPart = new MimeBodyPart();
messageBodyPart.setContent(content, "text/html");
multipart.addBodyPart(messageBodyPart);
message.setContent(multipart);
Transport.send(message);
Now
It is sending mail to the receipents but in at the receiver side the mail's subject field contains unicode in stead of chinese characters....if i open and seen the viewsource from the page it is adding an extra &amp instead of &..i think it is not filtering th unicode ....here iam sending the mail to gmail...
I didn't understand where iam doing the mistake please give some idea how to do this .....and let know where iam doing worng programming ....
it s very urgent for me ...please
Thanx in advance ......

hi bshannon
i solved this problem .....i will explain what did here
here iam getting the string literal from the DB as NCR formated string
so i converted that string to unicode string ...(Ex: "&amp#220027;")
This method will converts the NCR fomated string to UnicodeString:
public static String NCR2UnicodeString(String str)
StringBuffer ostr = new StringBuffer();
int i1=0;
int i2=0;
while(i2<str.length())
i1 = str.indexOf("&#",i2);
if (i1 == -1 ) {
ostr.append(str.substring(i2, str.length()));
break ;
ostr.append(str.substring(i2, i1));
i2 = str.indexOf(";", i1);
if (i2 == -1 ) {
ostr.append(str.substring(i1, str.length()));
break ;
String tok = str.substring(i1+2, i2);
try {
int radix = 10 ;
if (tok.trim().charAt(0) == 'x') {
radix = 16 ;
tok = tok.substring(1,tok.length());
ostr.append((char) Integer.parseInt(tok, radix));
} catch (NumberFormatException exp) {
ostr.append('?') ;
i2++ ;
return new String(ostr) ;
from this method i will get a string the unicode ...and iam setting this string to subject
MimeMessage message =new MimeMessage();
message.setSubject("string from the above method","utf-8");
and remaing setting all are doing here
finally
Transport.send(message);
I hope you are also expained the same thing ...
and a lot thanx to you to solve my urgent problem...
Thanx

• One more person who can't send mail but can receive

I sent mail last night and woke up this morning not being able to send mail.
I can receive, but can't send. I can send to my self, but can't reply to others or create new.
The email time out message say's the authentication is on. How that changed over night? Not sure.
Under Mail preferences, Account information, outgoing server settings-
I've been using 2525 with no authentication for over a year. I noticed someone suggesting 465 and 587... didn't work.
I went into advanced and saw where it IS asking for authentication (using password) but in the drop down list it doesn't give the word 'none' just like the account option had to select.
I used the connection Doctor and I have connection...
what else can I do?
Thank you for the help
Chelle

The standard TCP-port for SMTP is 25. If this doesn't work, try to authenticate to the SMTP-server with the credentials of your POP3-login. Maybe your ISP reconfigured his SMTP-servers to use aSMTP.
Some other ISP use a method called "SMTP-after-POP3". This means, that you must fetch your mail using POP3 first. After doing this, you have a specific period of time (at most ISPs 5 to 15 minutes) to send mail from the same IP-address as you have POPed before. This is for additional security.
One more reason could be that your configured SMTP-server is simply "dead" or offline for system maintenance. To check if the machine is alive, go to terminal and
ping nameofyourserver
and see if it responds. If so, try connecting on the SMTP port by typing
telnet nameofyourserver 25
These steps can provide additional information to find the cause for your problem.
