Tree control inside menubar

Hi Guys,
before I reimplement Menubar to support Tree, I was wondering if there is a component that will support that somewhere, basically what I want is to have a possibility to show treeControl as one of the menus of menuBar, currently as far as I can tell Menubar has a hardDependency on Menu Object even though it could have been typed as List and that way Tree could also be able to leverate the menuBar, but maybe there are some hard menu property dependencies that I have not clarified yet, anyways summary question:
is there a way to have tree showup whenever menubar menuItem is clicked instead of Menu?

Might be easier to use ButtonBar to popup Trees

Hi,
I undestand you want to hide/show tree nodes on demand.
in the standard DTN (detailed navigation) it isn't possible.
There are two options -
1. As suggested you can modify the DTN provided by SAP - all the code is under com.sap.portal.navigation.detailedtree.par and the iView name is also com.sap.portal.detailedNavigationTree
2. create this tree from scratch, and put it on the left side instead of the DTN or as a dynamic navigation iView.

How to get position of a ring in a tree control?

Ok, this is probably a stupid question, but how does one get the position of a ring inside of a tree control? I have a tree with two columns, with rings in the second column. I can set the position using SetTreeCellRingValueFromIndex(), but how does one get the position after the user has modified the control? I found the functions GetTreeCellRingIndexFromValue() and GetTreeCellRingValueFromIndex() but I haven't found a way to get either the Index or the Value of the ring (what I'm looking for is the index, but if I can obtain the value I can go from there). Thanks in advance!

Hi,
You can use GetTableCellVal function to get the value of the ring.
There is not special "ring" function for that. Maybe that's what you were searching for
From the value you can get to the index using the functions you are already aware of.

How to design a listbox or tree control related to the database

Now i have a problem to design a listbox or tree control, it is designed to connect to the database, if the related element in database changed, the element in listbox or tree control should also change. i have managed to read the element in database, but i cannot input it to the listbox or tree control, since it has no input terminal that i can only use the Labeling tool and enter text into it.
is there any advise on it, maybe i can use another control rather than listbox or tree control. any suggestion would be appreciate.

Hi Xuy,
On the front-panel, right-click on the text-ring control and select: Create\Property Node.
Then, on the diagram, right-click on the property-node and select "Strings[]".
The "strings[]" property is the array of strings available in the control - and you can change it.

Hey... any of u know... how to assign symbols to each of the tags in the tree control.... i saw an example "Traverse Tree Control and set custom symbols.vi" in LabVIEW examples and tried to do in the same way but its not wrking.... nomore symbol is appearing in the tree...

Tree control indenting

I created a tree control and am trying to follow the Help on how to indent, but when I select an item, say "Signal Generator" and right-click, the "Indent Item" option is greyed out. Is there something else I need to do?

Hello mrbean,
Your tree control has the row headers set to visible. These headers are just a type of label not the actual data inside the control. Since it is not the actual data they cannot be indented. Try putting the actual data values beside the row headers and notice that you can select items and right click to see that indent is no longer greyed out.

Tree control column question - Hot/Indicator

Is it possible to have some columns in a tree control be hot (edittable), and others as indicators (not edittable)? It seems as if all the columns (except for the "0th" first column) must be either all hot or all indicators. I also looked into the Cell attributes and there is no way to make indiviidual cells as either hot or indicators either (like Table controls).
I did notice that items can be dimmed using tho ATTR_CELL_DIMMED attribute, which gives a behaviour similar to what I'm looking for (user can't edit the cell value) but also gives the cell a greyed out appearance. I tried manually setting the appearance of the cell back to what I would like (ie ATTR_LABEL_TEXT to black) but naturally this didn't have an effect. Any ideas? Thanks.

You can pick and choose which columns and cells you'd like to edit using the tree's callback function if you have CVI 2009 or later. You can use ATTR_TREE_RUN_STATE and ATTR_TREE_EDITABLECELLS inside EVENT_LEFT_CLICK (and probably EVENT_LEFT_DOUBLE_CLICK too) to accomplish this. I'm attaching a simple project with a tree that you can edit the first column with a double click, the 2nd column with a single click and you can't change the data in the 3rd column at all. You could even specify individual cells you to make editable if that's what you wanted to do.

It draws lines between sibling nodes, but will show you how

How to handle events occuring on different items in a tree control

I am developing a small application in which I need to display different panels when user clicks on a tree control item....how to make it display a panel inside a parent panel when a user clicks an item in a tree control....any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you
If you are young work to Learn, not to earn.

The tree control can handle several events that you can rely on to handle user interaction. I suggest you take a llok at treeevent.prj example that comes with CVI. In your situation, one possible event to handle is EVENT_SELECTION_CHANGE, that marks the operation the user does when clicking on a new tree item.

How can I display and change built-in symbols of a tree control programmatically?

I want to set the built-in symbols of a tree control during runtime.
I only found an example to assign custom pictures but not how to select one of the 40 built-in symbol.

The ActiveItem.SymbolIndex will allow you to select the symbol for the active item. You can use the ListBox Symbol Ring Constant (Dialog and User Interface palette) to select a symbol (or you can just enter the number directly if you know what it is).

How can I make a control inside a loop in a subVI change value when the calling VI's control changes?

I think this is a pretty basic LV question, but I have not been able to find a good solution.
I am attaching VIs that show the problem I am having, but obviously, the real application is a lot complicated, which forces me to try to do it this way.
The issue is: I have a subVI with a Boolean control inside a loop. When the control is true I want some action to take place. When the subVI is run on its own, it works fine, acting properly when I set the boolean control to true via the LV FPGA interface from the host. However, when I use it as a subVI, in which the top-level VI calls several instances of the subVI, I have the Boolean controls in the top level VI. What is happening is that the false Boolean value with which the top-level VI starts is passed into the subVIs, and not updated, even though the control is inside the loop.
Can any one suggest a good solution?

Hi.
I know the example I posted might seem silly, but it was just to illustrate the problem I am having. In reality this is the application:
I have some LV FPGA code which uses a few FPGA IO to implement a serial link to communicate with a device. Most of the time we are getting data from the device, so the serial link is used to send a read command, read in the data and put it into a FIFO. However, I also wanted the VI to support sending data to the device, so I added an array control to put the data you want to send, and a boolean control to tell it you want to send it.
Since sending and receiving data are done using the same FPGA IO, they cannot be independent operations, because they would garble each other. Therefore, in the subVI I have a loop in which I first read data if there is any to read, then check the boolean write control to see if there is data to write.
As I mentioned, this works perfectly for talking to a single device. However, we run into the issue of this topic when trying to replicate this for several devices.
One easy solution is to not have the loop in the subVI, and have it in the calling VI (I am favoring this simple solution right now). The only reason why I have not done this yet, is that the subVI has more than one loop, so I am going to have to create several subVIs. I just posted to see if there was an even simpler solution...
There have been some other possibly good solutions proposed here, though I am not sure if they work in LV FPGA.

Not able to get the database data into the Tree Control

Hi Everybody,
I have to populate the tree control with nodes and items, which is to be populated from the database, and the tree control is dynamic. I mean, there is a toolbar, whenever a pushbutton is clicked, depending on that the tree contents has to be changed.
If anybody had worked with CL_GUI_COLUMN_TREE control to get the data from database, depending upon the pushbutton selected in Toolbar, please paste the seudocode for it.

How to get all items under a parent item in a tree control

Hello,
I have 2 questions regarding a tree control:
1) Is there any way to specify a parent item tag and get an array of ALL its sub item tags? For example, in the attached vi, specify the Parent#2 parent tag and get an array containing Item#P21 and Item#P22
2) Is there a way to specify a range to the ActiveCell property. For example, all items from line#1 to line number#3
Any ideas?

Did you try a search? There's no direct way of doing this. You have to navigate the tree and build up an array. You can find an example here: http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/get-all-children-of-a-parent-in-tree/td-p/729548

No. (It's called ActiveCell, not ActiveCells) Presumably you are trying to perform an operation on multiple items. Unfortunately, you need to use a loop. You should defer panel updates if you're doing this a lot.

How to binding incoming xml node list to the tree control as dataProvider

Recently, I faced into one issue: I want to binding incoming xml node (it's not avaliable at start) list to the tree control as a dataProvider.
Since the incoming xml node list is not avaliable at beginning but I needs to bind it to the tree, so I create one virtual one in the xml, and prepare to remove it before the tree is shown. (ready for the actual node adding). But It did not work.
Please see the presudo-code here:

For method: cleanData()，It's expected that when the treePage is shown, we first delete the virutalOne to provide one 'clear' tree since we don't want show virtualOne to the user. The virutalOne node just for building the relationship between treeData and treeXML at beginning. But the side effect of this method, I found, is that the relationship between treeXML and treeData was cut off. And this leads to that when I added new node (by click the 'addNode' button) to the xmlXML, the xmlData was not affected at all !
So Is there any other way to solve this issue or bind the incoming xml node list to the xmlListCollection which will be used as Tree control's dataProvider ?

If u want to display the name : value then u can do like this

How can I save the all the values of a tree control ?

I have a problem, in run time, I adds new items on a tree control, but i don´t know how I can save the values of the child text of each item in a file.

I'm no expert on the tree control, but I made a small example to save all items to a textfile, including item tag, item string, and indent level. One drawback of this method is that it fully expands the tree regardless how the user left it. To go the other direction, you'd have to write a routine to go through the text file and programmatically build the tree.
To master the tree control, I think you have to resort to creating a control reference for it and using the Invoke Node to do some operations. For another approach to traversing and operating on a tree, check out the "Traversing Tree Controls and Setting Custom Symbols" (search the NI Developer Zone site).
