Tried to change resolution in gnome, now cant run it

I seem to have gotten into the increasingly unpleasant habit of screwing up a desktop environment within the first hour of installing it....
I just installed gnome, was playing around with it, and I tried to change my resolution (silly me). The screen then went blank, returning me to gnome login manager. Any further attempts to run gnome were greeted with similar incidents, forcing me to run KDE instead.
So,
1. Anyone know how/where I can edit my gnome resolution via the shell? Searchs mostly returned suggestions to modify xorg.conf, though I doubt this is the problem, since kde runs just fine (well, I suppose that depends on how loosely you want to define "fine". anyway....)
2. Why does gnome get angry when I try to change my resolution?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Not really sure what gconf file needs to be edited for you, but you could try using this cli tool:
gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/screen/default/0/resolution --type=string 1024x768
use man gconftool-2 for more info. Hope this helps.

Don't know. Could be any number of reasons. Re-read the how to install RAM manual again for your model iMac. Double & triple check to make sure you purchased the right RAM chips. Make sure they are seated properly. If you didn't hear a snap when seated, the RAM is not properly seated.

[Solved] Can't change resolution in GNOME

I just installed Archlinux and GNOME. Everythings works find except the resolution is 800x600 and I can't find a way to change it. When I open screens preferences it says my screen is unknown and I can only choose 800x600 or 640x480.
My video card is a Geforce 8800 GTS and my screen a Samsung SyncMaster 961BW.
When I open nVidia X Server Settings it get this message :

There is an error in Xorg.0.log :
[ 14.352] (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)
That must be the cause of the problem but I can't find a way to fix it.
Anyone know how I could fix my problem ?

did you rebooted? is needed because now in 2.6.34 nouveau is in kernel and is blocking nvidia. nvidia package has a blacklist file for it.
like a side note, you don't need a xorg.conf at all. remove it

HT5621 changed apple id but now cant update apps

Hi
I recently changed my apple id as previously it was an old obselete email address. I have now changed it to my new email address.
I now see on my iphone that I have updates for apps waitng to download and when I click "update all" a pop up box with my old apple id appears and asked me to enter the password. I thne tried to enter the password but get an error message saying the id or password is incorrect.
As a result I cant update my apps. What should I do?
Advice much apprecaited.

Did you Create a New Apple ID...?
It should be Noted that anything Downloaded with a Particular Apple ID is tied to that Apple ID and Cannot be Merged or Transferred to a Different Apple ID

i have tried my mobilme password and changed that and re-entered it to no avail

So the question remains: How to install from a local copy?
There is no easy way.
If your Mac came with Lion preinstalled, your options are:
1. Make a bootable clone immediately (before adding any apps or other files). Keep that for emergency purposes.
2. Make a second bootable clone whenever there are major changes (and with all your apps and files installed).
3. Purchase the USB stick from Apple for $69.
4. You cannot purchase or download Lion from MAS (except with/through your internet recovery option) because you did not purchase Lion there in the first place (unless you were to completely erase your hard drive and then purchase/download Lion from MAS and then copy/save the installer to a safe place).

Have changed apple id and now cant turn on ICLOUD

I recently broke my screen on my 4s. my daughter had recently updated here 4s to a 5s so I decided to backup my phone and restore onto the now spare 4s.
some time ago I changed my email account and as I no longer had access to it I changed the name of my apple ID to my new email account. what I now realise is that I hadn't logged out of the old ICLOD id on my iPhone and logged back in with the new one. I hadn't thought of this as all was working ok (I don't use any cloud services, just find my iphone).
when I restored my image to the new 4s it came up with a message asking me to log into icloud but with the old ID. As that ID no longer exists I cannot login to that ID. As my new iPhone is on 7.x I cannot delete the Icloud account that came onto it via the backup as find my iPhone is turned on.
so I am now stuck as I cannot log onto an account that does not exist.....
help please.

having looked into this a bit more and found I have a bigger problem than just the one i originally posted as this impacts more than one of my devices.
I think I can pose the question in a easier way.....
I changed the name of my apple ID as it was using the name of an old email account I no longer have access to.
when I go onto any of my IOS devices that are running 7.x to change the Icloud account details , I cannot delete the old account id because when I try to it asks me for the password of my old account ID as I have find my iphone turned on. when I type in the password that was on the old account it says "incorrect apple id or password". I assume because that apple ID no longer exists.
ICLOUD obviously recognises the two accounts are the save as when I run up findmyiphone on an iphobe that is logged in with my new account ID it can see other IOS devices in my family that are still logged in with the old account name.
so my questions is:
how do you log you update an IOS device if you have simply changed the account name of your apple ID if you are on IOS 7 and have find my iphone turned on?

Changes the file name now cant see in imovies

I did an import from my hd camera to imovies - looked fine
In finder I went and changed the folder names of the events (just realised I should not have done this!)
I cant see the video/events in imovies anymore!

Changed my AD password and now i cannot get into the enable side of the cisco switches on our network (we have no routers).
Looking on the logs for the ACS v4.2 I can see the following -
On TACACS+ Accounting you can see the connections which have worked - it the initial tty connections -
When i look in the failed attempts i see the following -
Auth failed - External DB user invalid or bad password or on another occasion internal error
or EAP-TLS or PEAP authentication failed due to unknown CAcertificate during SSL handshake.
Anyone seen this before ?

Just out of curiosity can you verify your user account in ACS and make sure that the enable password is set to use external database?

Changing to IMAP account now cant spotlight

I have moved my mail account from being POP to IMAP.
I have copied all mail from the old POP folders to the new IMAP ones.
I cannot search the new folders.
The folders are not disabled in Spotlight preferences.

What type of searches are we talking about here? Which options do you have selected in the banner that appears between the toolbar and the message list when searching?
Does searching for those messages in Spotlight itself (not in Mail) work?
What are your Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Keep copies of messages for offline viewing settings? Spotlight needs a local copy of the messages in order to be able to index them...

You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use. If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll. When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

I changed a few settings and now cant get the iPad to shut off with the shut off switch and can't back to the settings icon to change it back. Any ideas?

Have you tried resetting your iPad?
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds).
No data will be lost.
