Trim Function on Oracle 8i and 7

Hello
I Wrote some Stored Procedures using TRIM Funktion on Release 8.1.7. No i have to use this procedures also against an Oracle 7 instance, but it seams that the TRIMfunction isn't working in relase 7. what's the best way to get it up ?
Thanx in adance

TRIM is a newish function. In Oracle 7 we just had RTRIM (i.e. TRAILING) and LTRIM (i.e. LEADING). To get the effect of BOTH you need to do RTRIM(LTRIM (yr_col)).
Cheers, APC
P.S.
what's the best way to get it up ? www.naughtynurses.com ;)

  • Are there different php functions for Oracle 8 and 9?

    Hi!
    Are there different php functions for Oracle 8 and 9?
    Thanks for your answer!

    You can use the oci8* functions for Oracle 8, 9 and 10.
    It is the most recent PHP interface to Oracle, and uses Oracle's most recent
    API.
    The name oci8 comes from the version number of Oracle - version 8 - when
    Oracle introduced a new C API. It succeeded the original OCI and got the
    common name OCI8. The original OCI now has the common name of OCI7.

  • How do I use the TRIM function in my Query?

    I have a field that has called AP.service_user_defined_1 that houses a Code the code is like Alpha Num ie "AA01" then it has about 30 to 40 whites spaces and then the description of what the code means. I need to have the description to show in my report I don't necessarily need the code but I do need the description I tried putting the TRIM Function in as below and it will not work what do I need to do to correct this?? I need help ASAP this is due today! Thanks for any help!

    Hi,
    We are planning to migrate various PLSQL objects from Oracle 9i to Oracle 11g.
    We have around 200 packages and Staored procedures Oracle 9i, can some one let me know if there are any specific items to look before we migrate from Oracle 9i into 11g so that everything works fine after the migration.
    Please let me know major differences amognst in-built functions between Oracle 9i and 11g.

    Oracle 11g has many advanced features in PL/SQL over Oracle 9i.

  • Oracle 9i and 10g differences in "group by"

    I found the sorting order is different in "group by" function of Oracle 9i and 10g.
    What is the reason?
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
    SQL> create table t ( a number, b number);
    Table created.
    SQL> insert into t values (1,2);
    1 row created.
    SQL> insert into t values (100, 200);
    1 row created.
    SQL> insert into t values (10, 20);
    1 row created.
    >>>>>>>>>
    9i
    >>>>>>>>>
    SQL> select sum (b) , a from t group by a;
    SUM(B) A
    2 1
    20 10
    200 100
    >>>>>>>>>
    10g
    >>>>>>>>>
    SQL> select sum (b) , a from t group by a;
    SUM(B) A
    2 1
    200 100
    20 10

    in oracle "group by" doesn't sort. Not strictly true.
    Pre 10g had an implicit order by which was caused by the way the database engine performed it's group by operation.
    In 10g this has now been "refined" so that group by does what it says i.e. groups the data, without having the side effect of implicitly ordering the data.
    In reality if you want data in a particular order you should always specify an ORDER BY clause and never rely on the fact that Oracle used to suffer from an implicit side effect.

  • R trim function in xsl and concatenate problem

    Hi,
    I have a situation where i need to trim the spaces on right side of the element content using XSL.
    Please see the following xml.
    <BookStore>
    <artist>Bob Dylan</artist>
    <country>USA</country>
    <company>Columbia</company>
    <Title>Book Name1 </Title>
    <Title>Book Name2</Title>
    <Title> Book Name3 </Title>
    <Title> Book Name4</Title>
    </BookStore>
    I need to trim the space on the right side of the title element and need to add a + sign at the end of the each title and then need to concatenate them into a single element "booknames."
    That means the booknames should contain value of
    <booknames>Book Name1+Book Name2+ Book Name+Book Name4</booknames>
    Finally the above xml should look like,

    <country>USA</country>
    <company>Columbia</company>
    <booknames>Book Name1+Book Name2+ Book Name+Book Name4</booknames>
    </BookStore>
    I know we have a normalize function in xsl. But we don't have a rtrim function in xsl. And the difficulty over here is we should read the title element in recursion and them trim space and then add+ then concatenate.
    can anyone guide me how to go about it in trimming the space in recursion.
    Thanks.

  • How do I trim video clips in Quicktime Player?  The "trim" function under the edit menu is gray and won't do anything.

    I am trying to edit video clips from about two yesrs worth of video for an iMovie.  I don't want to load all of the clips into a new event because it would be hours worth of video.  I don't even know if iMovie could handle it.  I have tried to use Quicktime Player to do this, but the "trim" function under the edit menu is gray and won't let me do anything.  What can I do?

    Thank you so much!
    It works!
    I used this code...
    videoDisplay.addEventListener(VideoEvent.COMPLETE, videoCompleteHandler);
    private function videoCompleteHandler(event:VideoEvent):void {
         hideVideo();
    private function hideVideo():void {
         this.visible = false;
         this.includeInLayout = false;
    I have a follow up question...
    What is the syntax to target the video player from a different component to add an event listener to a button in the Sharing Widget called Back to Video?
    Thanks!!

  • Macbook Pro 2010 17" model and SSD and Trim Function?

    If you purchase the Apple SSD drive 256 model when you buy the new macbook pro 17", does this SSD allow the Trim Functionality? Do you have to schedule the trim fuction with this drive or does the OS do it for you?

    Use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable clone of your SSD on an external hard drive. The cloning process with either utility is self-explanatory, a matter of half a dozen or fewer clicks. Cloning back again requires only that you boot to the external drive, then open CCC or SD and repeat the process in the opposite direction. Nothing could be simpler.
    Any FireWire or USB external drive that is known to be bootable in OS X will do. But avoid Western Digital external drives — they are very often problematical because of firmware that is preinstalled on them and is miserable to remove.
    As for whether you can wipe an SSD on a Mac as completely as you can on a Windoze box, I can't answer that.

    This might work:
    select trim(first_name) name from

    If you specify them as varchar2's the trailing blanks will be trimmed.
    Also ... to remove the leading blanks.
    Optional Enclosure Delimiters
    Leading whitespace is also removed from a field when optional enclosure delimiters are specified but not present.
    Whenever optional enclosure delimiters are specified, SQL*Loader scans forward, looking for the first enclosure delimiter. If an enclosure delimiter is not found, SQL*Loader skips over whitespace, eliminating it from the field. The first nonwhitespace character signals the start of the field. This situation is shown in Field 2 in Figure 9-6. (In Field 1 the whitespace is included because SQL*Loader found enclosure delimiters for the field.)

    TRIM removes all of the spaces, regardless of how many there are.
    If you want to limit the number of spaces it removes, then you have to use other functions, either in addition to or instead of TRIM. (REGEXP_REPLACE comes to mind quickly.)
    I'm not sure what you're saying about "adding space also". LPAD and RPAD are rather like opposites of LTRIM and RTRIM. (There is no bi-directional PAD function.) RTRIM can remove spaces from the end of a string, RPAD can add spaces to the end of a string.
    I hope this answers your question.
    If not, post a little sample data (CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements, showing some strimgs you want to change), and also post the results you want from that data.
    Explain, using specific examples, how you get those results from that data.
    Always say which version of Oracle you're using.

    ORA-30001: trim set should have only one characterDear All why this error....

    TRIM function
    TRIM is a function that takes a character expression and returns that expression with leading and/or trailing pad characters removed. Optional parameters indicate whether leading, or trailing, or both leading and trailing pad characters should be removed, and specify the pad character that is to be removed.
    Syntax
    TRIM( [ trimOperands ] trimSource)
    trimOperands ::= { trimType [ trimCharacter ] FROM | trimCharacter FROM }
    trimType ::= { LEADING | TRAILING | BOTH }
    trimCharacter ::= CharacterExpression
    trimSource ::= CharacterExpression
    If trimType is not specified, it will default to BOTH. If trimCharacter is not specified, it will default to the space character (' '). Otherwise the trimCharacter expression must evaulate to one of the following:
    a character string whose length is exactly one, or.
    NULL
    If either trimCharacter or trimSource evaluates to NULL, the result of the TRIM function is NULL. Otherwise, the result of the TRIM function is defined as follows:
    If trimType is LEADING, the result will be the trimSource value with all leading occurrences of trimChar removed.
    If trimType is TRAILING, the result will be the trimSource value with all trailing occurrences of trimChar removed.
    If trimType is BOTH, the result will be the trimSource value with all leading and trailing occurrences of trimChar removed.

  • About using TRIM function...

    //I'm posting this after whole search of past discussion as everybody wants to do so. :-)
    Hi,
    I want to trim out white spaces from colums in my table when select executes.
    I've read about TRIM function, but it does not as documented I think.
    See below my pseudo-code from trimming.
    SELECT trim (' ' from col1) &#0124; &#0124; col2, FROM TH_ABLICEN WHERE..blah..blah..This SQL query return me "ORA-00907: missing right parenthesis".
    I don't know how can this returns...
    TRIM function works only when its parameter is a constant and fails always when columns were injected as a parameter.
    This situation is very obscure to me and make me wondering ORACLE's intention for this kind of inconvenience.
    And I've tried replace (col1, ' ', '') only to fail.
    So my question is...
    1. How can use trim function?
    2. What is the ordinary method being used by popular demand to trim out white spaces from a column?
    Thanks in advance
    Regards,
    Ryan

  • Oracle, Null and empty Strings

    Currently I'm facing problems with a class, which contains a String, which
    is set to "" (empty String).
    When the class is persistent, oracle writes null to the table column
    (which seems to be common oracle behaviour) and when retrieving the class,
    the field is set to null as well, giving me a lot of null-pointer
    exceptions.
    Anyway ... I can cope with that (just a lot of extra work)
    far worse is the problem, wenn searching objects, that have this field set
    to "" oder null.
    Oracle can't find the records because JDO creates Querys "where
    string=null" or "where string=''" , where oracle expects "where string is
    null" to find the records.
    Is there a workaround or solution ?

    Yeah, that would work as well, thx, but since I have to cope with
    null-Strings now everywhere in my program, it doesn't hurt just to forbid
    empty strings on the program side.
    In future times I'll test on Oracle first, then porting to DB/2 - this way
    I suppose work is far less to garant compability.
    Nevertheless ... having to set the bankcode into quotes is a kodo bug in
    my opinion.
    Kodo knows the type of classfields (in this case string) and shouldn't
    send the parameter as a BigDecimal to the database.
    Given that, and having only bankcodes of null (only neccesary when using
    Oracle), the method would look like:
    public Collection getAccounts (String bankCode)
    throws Exception
    return getAccounts (Account.class, "bankcode=="+bankcode);
    which is how a transparent persistent layer, um, should be , um , I mean
    ... just transparent ;-D
    Marc Prud'hommeaux wrote:
    Stefan-
    Couldn't you just do something like:
    public Collection getAccounts (String bankCode)
    throws Exception
    String filter;
    if (bankCode == null || bankCode.length () == 0)
    filter = "(bankCode == null || bankCode == "")";
    else
    filter = "bankCode == "" + bankCode + """;
    return getAccounts (Account.class, filter);
    If I understand the problem correctly, this should work for all the
    databases.

    A string column... is it also represented as a string field in your class?Yeah ... just to give you an impression of the code:
    First we have a class, representing a bank account:
    public class Account {
    private AccountMgr myAccountMgr;
    private String bankCode;
    private String id;
    Note, that in nearly all cases bankCode will be a number or null.
    I have a second class "AccountMgr", which does all of the persistant stuff
    (seaching, making persistent etc.)
    This class has two methods, one versatile (protected) to retrieve accounts
    by a given filterString and one who just returns accounts by bankCode,
    building the expected filterstring. Here is my current working version:
    public class AccountMgr {
    public Collection getAccounts(String bankCode) throws Exception {
    if (bankCode!=null) {
    if (bankCode.equals("")) {
    throw new Exception("check code, bankCode='' not allowed to get
    same behavior from DB2 and Oracle");
    // if set, quote the bankCode
    bankCode="""+bankCode+""";
    return getAccounts(Account.class,"bankCode=="+bankCode);
    protected Collection getAccounts(Class accountClass, String filterAdd)
    throws Exception {
    PersistenceManager pm = MyHelper.getPersistenceManager();
    String filter="";
    if (filterAdd!=null && !filterAdd.trim().equals("")) {
    filter+=filterAdd + " && ";
    filter += "myAccountMgr==_accMgr";
    Query query = pm.newQuery(accountClass, filter);
    query.declareParameters("AccountMgr _accMgr");
    return (Collection) query.execute(this);
    As you can see, in the first method I have to set the bankCode into
    quotes, when it's not null.
    This is because otherwise a filter like "bankCode=1234" will be translated
    in a way, where 1234 is send as a BigDecimal to the database:
    [...] executing statement <4239745>: (SELECT [...] FROM JDO_ACCOUNT t0
    WHERE t0.BANKCODE = ? : [reused=1;params={(BigDecimal) 1234}]
