Trim support for SSD on Marvel controller?

I read somewhere that the 6Gbs Marvell 9128 ports do not support trim on an SSD.  Is this true?  I also heard that the RAID support for the Intel P67 ports are much more better than the Marvel Ports.  This is what I am trying to do, and am wondering if it will work.  I have an MSI P67A-GD65.  I want to run Two WD Caviar Black 6Gbs (even though I know they achieve nowhere near that rate) on Sata ports 1 and 2 (the Intel P67 controller ports), in ports 3,4,5,6 (the Intel P67 3 Gbs ports) I would have 2 1TB storage drives, A Bluray drive, A DVD drive, and in the last ports 7 or 8 (the Marvell 9128) controller 6Gbs port) I wanted to have a Crucial C300 128Gb SSD drive as the boot drive.  Would this work, or should I use port 7 and 8 for my RAID setup instead and use port 1 or 2 for the SSD?  Any thoughts are appreciated.  I love this mainboard and can't wait to get it up and running.

Not true. TRIM has nothing to do with the SATA controller, it is dependent on the drive itself, and your operating system.

    Have read up on this and apparently not Apple SSDs aren't getting TRIM support. Does anyone have any solid info on this? Also, is there a completely dependable way of switching on TRIM support?

    But Edmond, trim can NOT cause issues - it just will give you no benefits and slow down SSD, if it is based on SF 2xxx controller.     How does Arch Linux handle SSD's? Does Arch Linux or the 3.0 kernel natively support TRIM or some equivalent garbage collection mechanism? Is TRIM or whatever it uses enabled by default during an installation of Arch Linux or must I enable this in some way? Just  trying to understand if making the switch to SSD versus traditional spindle drives is smart using Arch Linux.

  • TRIM Support for AMD sb850

    Hi all,
    I've just bought an OCZ Octane 128GB SSD, formatted nad created an ext4 partition to host my root filesystem.
    When I try to enable TRIM support for root filesystem (putting the discard in mount options) I get the following errors in dmesg
    failed command: DATA SET MANAGEMENT
    I've a Gigabyte GA-870A-UDE rev2 motherboard, the SSD is attached to one of the sata3 ports (managed by the SB850 Southbridge)
    Any Ideas?

    Technically, TRIM is not supported by Lion for non-Apple-branded SSDs, but there is a work around for this.

    Unfortunately, using "fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 0" will not tell you if TRIM is actually working.
    How do you know it is not already working?

  • Yosemite and Trim Enabler for SSD?

    I have recently replaced my macbook pro's hard drive with a SSD. Currently I am running mountain lion but would like to upgrade it to Yosemite. Upgrading it is not an issue. However I have learned that enabling Trim Enabler on Yosemite will open up security issues and I read an article on Cindori website that there is no other alternative for this. I am wondering if anyone has found a way to install Yosemite and use Trim Enabler without sacrificing the security features on mac. Also what will happen if I upgrade to Yosemite and not use Trim Enabler at all? How will it affect the SSD?

    As to "sacrificing the security features on mac," keep in mind that the TRIM Enabler/Yosemite conflict started with Yosemite and only the security feature introduced with Yosemite is affected. All of the earlier versions of OS X didn't have the kext signing feature but somehow we managed and the rest of the OS X security features are still in place.

    As for using hacked ktext, there can be trouble booting which you should know about first.
    As a reminder, TRIM will keep the writing performances of you SSD high. without it, the writing performances decrease rapidly, most notably for the data transfer rate.

    I just bought a Crucial M4 512GB SSD and I cannot get this thing to work in the hard drive caddy.  Works fine in the primary slot, but can't initialize/partition/format/anything when using it with my official Lenovo hard drive caddy.  So what SSDs does the caddy support?  

    Ok, I feel a little dumb.  I got the M4 working.  In the past, I've been able to hot swap my 2nd drives.  Apparently this no longer works (need to figure out why).  I plugged in my old HDD while booted up and got the same "drive not initialized" error on it.  After a reboot, the HDD was up and running.  So tried the same with the SSD and it's working.  I thought I had done this as part of my troubleshooting but I guess not :/

    I was doing some research on this matter but did not find too much information on that that's more useful than confusing.
    The setup is the following: I have an SSD (Crucial, Marvell-Controller) with two partitions: a small one for /boot and a bigger one for the rest, which is a LUKS-Container. I left some unpartitioned space at the end of the SSD. I'd like to *not* enable TRIM on the LUKS-device for security purposes.
    I was wondering now:
    I read that TRIM does reduce the write amplification of garbage collection. But shouldn't the garbage collection do not write at all, but just erase cells with no information on it?
    If TRIM helps keeping up performance: do I need to explicitly trim the unpartitioned space? Or does this area behave like the spare area?
    If TRIM of the unpartitioned space is necessary: what's the most elegant way to do so?
    If someone could shed a little light on this matter, that would help a lot and would be greatly appreciated.

    I have the same setup. Crucial SSD, LUKS, TRIM (cron.weekly fstrim). A full hexdump (minus gigabytes of random data) looks like this: https://bpaste.net/raw/505157 (tell me about it)
    There is no issue with security. At least, none I care about. So the attacker can see how much free space there is [and where]. The where part is important since lots of small files give a different picture [lots of small free spaces in between] than a single very large file would [no free space in between], assuming there is no fragmentation worth mentioning [which Linux filesystems are usually good at]. So an attacker could probably make some guesses about your amount of data and file sizes. On the other hand I don't see how that's important, in ecryptfs you get this kind of info for free, and I have all sorts of files in all sorts of sizes either way, so it's not a big secret.
    The question is, when all it takes to crack your encryption setup is a keylogger or a $5 encryption wrench, does it really matter?
    Don't use TRIM on your SSD if you don't want to (there are lots of reasons not to TRIM... like better data recovery chances if you delete something by accident). But don't fool yourself thinking it's somehow really important for your security...
    As for unpartitioned space, if it ever was in use before, you need to trim it once. Create a partition on it, then blkdiscard the partition, then delete the partition. That way it's good until it's "in use" again because you dd all over it or had it resynced in a RAID.
    Apart from that, TRIM does all the things you said (reduce write amplification, performance, etc. etc.) but it's not like the SSD can't take it if you're not writing 24/7 because it's a database server burning up or something.

  • MacBookPro3.1 SSD and TRIM support?

    I recently replaced my HDD with an Intel X25-M (G2) 160Gb SSD drive and the mac is now _really_ fast. What I can tell from searching the net, is that the OSX operating system I'm using (10.6.4) is not yet supporting the TRIM feature of the disc. Eventually, the SSD could become slower...
    Is there any information available to shed som light on this matter, such as:
    a) will it be supported by Apple OSX in near future?
    b) will I have to bother about it?
    c) what else do I need to do in order to keep my SSD happy and fast?
    Windows 7 do support TRIM and Intel provides the necessary (ToolBox) utility for Windows OS versions, but not for OSX.
    Anyone?

    I've done quite a bit of research on this subject and here's what I have come up with.
    Based on anandtech's knowledge and reports, all of the Apple sold SSDs are OEM drives from either Samsung or Toshiba, and they all run custom firmware

    I would say that this is what's going on:
    1.) Apple's SSDs run their own custom firmware and take care of drive degredation in a custom, non-industry standard way (aka TRIM) -- what a surprise, just like everything else Apple does.
    2.) Apple has done this on purpose so they can make money selling SSDs for more than a standard (non Apple OEM) SSD would cost you.
    3.) Apple will never implement TRIM; they want you to buy their drives with their firmware, which by all accounts, do not need TRIM and do not suffer from poor performance after extended usage.
    Consider the facts -- Windows 7, Linux, BSD, [insert every other os in the world here] has supported TRIM for over a year now. It's not hard to implement; maybe 20 lines of code at the most? All it does is pass an ATA command from the SATA controller to the disk at the right times.
    If you want to use a non Apple OEM SSD, I would say there's a more than likely chance it will become slower after 5-6 months of usage...Depending on the level of degredation, class of drive, how much free space is left on the drive, it could be noticeable.
    Some users have reported using non Apple OEM SSDs successfully on OS X, and some have run into problems.
    A few notes:
    1.) A degraded drive can be reset to factory condition by using a secure erase program. You would have to back your data up, secure erase the drive, then do a restore. Secure erase of an SSD takes about 1 minute, plus the time to backup and restore depends on what kind of storage you're backing it up to \ restoring it from. This is more or less a band-aid solution for using an SSD on an OS that has no TRIM support, and should really only be done if you are experiencing problems.
    2.) SLC drives are a LOT less susceptible to degredation than MLC drives. Intel still has not implemented TRIM support for the X25-e series drives...some people say that SLC drives still need TRIM, but in my experience (I've been using the SLC Intel x25-e drives for over a year and a half now), they don't. They're a lot more expensive though..by a huge margin.
    3.) The less free space an SSD has, the more chance it has at becoming degraded. The obvious solution here is to store media and larger files on a NAS, and then keep only important applications and the OS on the SSD.
    I hope this has helped answer some of your questions.
    One more thing, according to Anand, the Kingston’s SSDNow V+ Series and the SSDNow V Series work very well on OS's without TRIM support (OS X). If I were you, I'd go with that over the Intel drive. I've never used a Gen-2 X25-M, only the Gen-1 (abandoned and discontinued by Intel, replaced with Gen-2, never had TRIM implemented and never will); and on Windows XP, I experienced stutters and slowdowns after 6 months. I used the "band-aid" solution to get the drive back to health, and then I got rid of it and picked up the 64GB V series (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139132) -- unfortunately, that was around the time I switched to Windows 7, and I've never used the drive on OS X, so I can't confirm what Anand is saying; but I would take his word for it.
    Since you already have the X25-M, I would keep an eye on things -- if it gets slow, back it up, do a secure erase (there's tons of programs out there, hdparm on linux is probably my favorite and the easiest to use), then a restore. Should give you another 5-6 months until you start experiencing problems again.

    I have the 128 GB Samsung MMCRE28G8MXP that came with my T410S.  CystalDiskInfo (and googling) tells me that TRIM has not been implemented on the drive's firmware.  I can see that CrystalDiskinfo correctly identifies TRIM on my Crucial and my intel SSD's. Is there any information out from Lenovo or Samsung that TRIM will be implemented on this drive?  Or maybe a tool to clean up the pages on disk?

My machine was manufactured 2010/03/25. Googling around myself, I found the following facts:Samsung has released a firmware update giving TRIM support for their retail drives, but OEMs like Lenovo must issue their own. I don't know if anyone's tried applying the Samsung firmware to their Lenovo drive; there is a risk of turning the drive into a paperweight, if it's recognized at all.There is a rumor that Lenovo will release firmware giving TRIM support sometime soon. If a drive doesn't have TRIM support, to wipe it one must use the secure erase facility, which wipes the whole drive. On Linux, this can be done from a rescue CD withhdparm --security-erase [password] [device]Obviously this is rather inconvenient, as it requires a complete backup + restore. Samsung's firmware release was January, so you have to wonder what the holdup is for Lenovo ...
