Oracle 11g initialization parameters
Hi,
I have heard that our old friends, the init parameters BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST, CORE_DUMP_DEST & USER_DUMP_DEST have been deprecated in Oracle 11g. Can anybody explain to me why? and are there any new parameters in their place? if so what are those?
Thanks in advance.

ORACLE 11g Database Parameters (Datawarehouse) - Recommended/Best Practice
Hi all
What are the generally recommeded database parameter settings for a a VLDB datawarehouse implementation with regards to:
- Online Redo log file size
- Number of Redo log fileFahd Mirza wrote:
In My data warehouse of size just above 2TB, I have three tablespaces for three different schemas. One is for staging, other is for history and the other is for analysis and some near real time data. I use 3 bigfile table spaces of sizes 700G. The version of database is 11gR1 on Solaris 5.10, and I use ASM.
Fahd,
What's your backup startegy ?
Have you enabled "change tracking" so that rman can use proper incremental backups, or do you let rman scan the entire 700GB file to identify changed blocks, or do you use some type of "split mirror"/"snapshot" method offered by the hardware vendor ?
What's your resilience/recovery strategy ?
The OP is talking about lots of "nologging" activities - is your system similar, or do you force logging and run with a standby to protect yourself against failure.
(I kow I'm addressing the questions to you, but they're really there to prompt the OP to think about some of the related issues, and you may have some good answers that will help him/her.)

Calculating Kernel parameters for Oracle 11g R2 db on solaris 10u9
Hi Everyone,
I have query regarding calculating the kernel parameters for deploying oracle 11g R2 db on solaris 10 v 5.10 update 09 machine , we have Ram size of 64gb.
My question is how to calculate shared memory ,shared memory identifiers,semaphores, semaphores identiifiers for creating resource control for the project(user.oracle).
And how to fine out the available semphore values allocated in system..
Thanks in Advance.

RMAN-04025 when performing automated TSPITR in Oracle 11g R2 (Enterprise)
Hi guys,
I'm sort of new to Oracle, so here is the problem I'm encountering:
I have a database ('foo'), in which I have created a tablespace ('blue') (not as sysdba, but as user01 with dba privileges). I also created a table in tablespace's datafile and then add some data. Then I took backup of this tablespace along with the current controlfile and archivelog (backup lies into the C:\app\[username]flash_recovery_area\foo\backupset\[date]). Then I deleted the data of this tablespace and tried to perform automated tpsitr. As you can see below, my restoration point is based on the scn tag, I got from backup list (of this 'blue' tablespace) and I defined the auxiliary destination in 'C:\backup', which is an existing folder in my computer. So, I keep constantly getting this rman-04025 error. RMAN results are posted as follows: RMAN> recover tablespace blue

After a quick search in the Internet I saw that this error might refer to resource/ memory issues, but I yet don't know how to deal with it.
FYI my Oracle installation is on a i7-core processor 8GB RAM pc.
Any ideas or suggestions regarding this issue, would be really helpful.
Thanks in advance!I found Metalink document 391785.1
this sounds very similar to what I am having
Even though this bug is said to be fixed in 11g - probably its not fully fixed
So , my only option is to use the manual way and create the auxiliary instance myself :-(

Installing Oracle 11g R2 on RHEL 5.9 server
Hi,
I've been trying to install Oracle 11g R2 on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.9 server but have not succeeded thus far. The server meets all the software and hardware requirements for Oracle 11g Release 2 and when it also has all the prerequisite packages/ RPM's on it, when checked manually. I have set up the various kernel, semaphore and local port range parameters in accordance with the Oracle guides for installing Oracle on RHEL 5. I also followed the online guides to create the "oracle" user and set up the groups (oinstall, dba, oper and asm).
However, when I run the installer, it shows "Failed" for all the prerequisite checks. I tried to ignore this and install Oracle but it failed at 37% and gave multiple errors, related to invoking target 'XYZ' of different files including makefile and gcc.
I suspect that either the installer is unable to detect these packages as they already exist on our server or it is something to do around permissions to the groups. I read on these forums that it might be because of a "cvu" folder created inside /tmp that requires '777' permission but am not sure if that's what's causing our installation to fail.
Please let me know how to proceed with the installation and guide me through this.
Thanks.Hi, its Oracle 11g R2 - 2.0.3.6 .
The O.S is Linux x86_64
server: RHEL 5.9 (Takinga) with kernel: 2.6.18
I've been working on this all day today and have managed to overcome the errors regarding the missing/ failed packages. I've also verified that my kernel parameters are correct; I had missed the kernel shmmni parameter yesterday.
The installer now detects all the packages & runs till 86% when it gives the error: "error invoking target client_sharedlib of makefile".
Kindly let me know how to proceed. Thanks in advance ! -

As you have mentioned that the sysman account was locked I would recommend to change the sysman password as per below doc to ensure the password is consistent at both config file and DB level

Then try accessing the DBcontrol using below URL

Creation of two databases in oracle 11g on linux
HI,
I need to create two databases in oracle 11g on linux.
how to set SID'S in .bash_profile and change the init.ora file.
pls anyone let me know
thanks
srinivasIf you have different databases on same node you could choose to not set ORACLE_SID in shell init file but use instead interactive oraenv Oracle script to set the right ORACLE_SID.
Please read Configuring the Operating System Environment Variables in http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10897/em_manage.htm#ADMQS12369
To create easily a database (ie without using your own scripts) try to use DBCA that will automatically take care of database initialization file: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10897/install.htm#BABEIAID

The danger of memory target in Oracle 11g - request for discussion.
Hello, everyone.
This is not a question, but kind of request for discussion.
I believe that many of you heard something about automatic memory management in Oracle 11g.
The concept is that Oracle manages the target size of SGA and PGA. Yes, believe it or not, all we have to do is just to tell Oracle how much memory it can use.
But I have a big concern on this. The optimizer takes the PGA size into consideration when calculating the cost of sort-related operations.
So what would happen when Oracle dynamically changes the target size of PGA? Following is a simple demonstration of my concern.

select /*+ use_hash(t1 t2) */ count(*)
from t1, t2
where t1.c1 = t2.c1 and t1.c2 = t2.c2
alter session set events '10053 trace name context off';With above test case, I found that
1. Oracle invalidates the query when internal pga aggregate size changes, which is quite natural.
2. With changed pga aggregate size, Oracle recalculates the cost. These are excerpts from the both of the 10053 trace files.
-- First 10053 trace file
PARAMETERS USED BY THE OPTIMIZER
PARAMETERS WITH ALTERED VALUES
Compilation Environment Dump
_smm_max_size = 11468 KB
_smm_px_max_size = 28672 KB
optimizer_use_sql_plan_baselines = false
optimizer_use_invisible_indexes = true
-- Second 10053 trace file
PARAMETERS USED BY THE OPTIMIZER
PARAMETERS WITH ALTERED VALUES
Compilation Environment Dump
_smm_max_size = 13107 KB
_smm_px_max_size = 32768 KB
optimizer_use_sql_plan_baselines = false
optimizer_use_invisible_indexes = true
Bug Fix Control Environment10053 trace file clearly says that Oracle recalculates the cost of the query with the change of internal pga aggregate target size. So, there is a great danger of unexpected plan change while Oracle dynamically controls the memory segments.
I believe that this is a desinged behavior, but the negative side effect is not negligible.
I just like to hear your opinions on this behavior.
Do you think that this is acceptable? Or is this another great feature that nobody wants to use like automatic tuning advisor?

__pga_aggregate_target = 58720256
yep, I got it! pat1=83886080, pat2=58720256Oracle continued being bounced between shared pool and buffer cache size, and about 1200th execution Oracle suddenly stole some memory from PGA target area to increase db cache size.
(I'm still in dark age on this automatic memory target management of 11g. More research in need!)
I think that this is very clear and natural behavior. I just want to point out that this would result in unwanted catastrophe under special cases, especially with some logic holes and bugs.

Connect Oracle 11g (64-bit windows server) to Microsoft SQL Server 2000
Hi all,
I am trying to connect:
Oracle 11g (64-bit windows server) to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (32-bit) on a different machine.
1) I have create an ODBC connection (called:GALAXY) which connects.
2) created a init.ora called it initgalaxy.ora in $oracle_home\hs\admin
HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = GALAXY
HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = on
3) modified the listener.ora file as below

As DG4ODBC is independant from the Oracle database (or the target database) you can use a 3 machine model:
On the first machine you have your Oracle database, on a second machine running 32bit Windows you can install DG4ODBC and on the 3rd machine you can run your foreign database.
If the SQL Server 2k is installed on a 32bit Windows machine, then you can also install DG4ODBC on this machine.
In general the connection from an Oracle database to the DG4ODBC machine is done using SDQL*Net. The listener responsible for DG4ODBC will then load the DG4ODBC executable which will connect to the SQL Server using SQL Server ODBC driver. -
Install and uninstall of Oracle 11g R2 on Windows 2008 Server
Hi,
I installed Oracle 11g R2 and set up a database on Windows 2008 Server following the steps in the Installation Guide and it was successful. After uninstalling the product and doing a re-install, the step to configure the Net Configuration Assistant fails with the following msg.
Failed to allocate port(s) in the specified range(s) for the following process(es): JMS
[5540-5559], RMI [5520-5539], Database Control [5500-5519], EM Agent [3938] | [1830-1849]
Also, when I ran "netca.bat" and tried to reconfigure the Listener, it indicated the default port 1521 is being used. I ran "netstat -an" and do not see the port listed.
Questions:
What is the best way to check if something was leftover from my previous install of Oracle that is using the default ports?
What do I need to do to ensure a re-install is successful?
Uninstalling Oracle -
1. Log in as the Administrator.
2. Stop all Oracle Services.
3. From a cmd window, run C:\app\oracle\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\deinstall\deinstall.bat.
4. Delete the C:\app\oracle directory.
5. Remove the following registry entries as per http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/relnotes.112/e16777/toc.htm:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\Application\Oracle Services for MTS

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\Application\Oracle.<SID>
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\Application\Oracle.VSSWriter.<SID>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Oracle11Johan, after I uninstalled Oracle, I checked to ensure there were no remaining Oracle services remaining.
Srini, below are the steps I followed to uninstall Oracle. In step 3, I just ran deinstall.bat without any parameters and provided required information as prompted. Note, I uninstalled using the Administrator user and not the "oracle" account that I used to install Oracle.

Question about the Initialization Parameters Information in the Alert.log
Hi, All -
What is the correct answer for the following question.
Specifically, what information does Oracle provide you with in the alert.log regarding initialization parameters?
a. Values of all initialization parameters at startup
b. Values of initialization parameters modified since last startup
c. Values of initialization parameters with non-default values
d. Only values of initialization parameters that cannot be modified dynamically.
I think the answer should be B, but I would like to confirm.The answer is C

The alert log is a special trace file. The alert log of a database is a chronological log of messages and errors, and includes the following items:
All internal errors (ORA-600), block corruption errors (ORA-1578), and deadlock errors (ORA-60) that occur
Administrative operations, such as CREATE, ALTER, and DROP statements and STARTUP, SHUTDOWN, and ARCHIVELOG statements
Messages and errors relating to the functions of shared server and dispatcher processes
Errors occurring during the automatic refresh of a materialized view
The values of all initialization parameters that had nondefault values at the time the database and instance start
