Trimming movie clips

Movie clip is originally 20 seconds. I trim it to 8 seconds. When played in slideshow it shows the 8 seconds I trimmed but freezes on the last frame for 12 more seconds. Does this will all clips. Plays them the original length of time not the trimmed length.
Is there any way to fix this or do I have to edit the clips in iMovie or something?

Greetings,
How did you trim the clips? There is no movie editing feature within the iPhoto Application.
I would:
_Drag the clip out of iPhoto.
_Open it with Quicktime Player X and then trim it to desired length.
_Save it.
_Drag the trimmed movie back into iPhoto and add to the slideshow and test it. (Make sure you add the trimmed version of the movie and not the original when you drag the movie back into iPhoto.)
Hope that helps.

  • While trimming a clip in my timeline, the entire timeline moves with my trim. How can I stop that and leave a gap in-between clips?

While trimming a clip in my timeline, the entire timeline moves with my trim. How can I stop that and leave a gap in-between clips? Also when I use my blade it only leaves a dotted line in the clip. How can I make that a solid line? I do a lot of flickering in my videos and don't need that some what of a snapping effect while I edit. Please help me someone. I believe i upgraded from FCP 10.0.1 to 10.0.3 and before it never did this.

Mark an In point and an Out point (which creates a Range) and hit the forward delete key (Replace with Gap.) On a MacBook, you'll probably need to hold down the Fn key and type the Delete key (or, I think you might be able to use Shift-Delete as the same command). On an iMac/Mac Pro keyboard, it's the key just to the left of 'end' or the next key above the left arrow key.
You can use the Range tool (hold down the R key and click drag over your clip) or the Blade tool to cut at the in and out (then select the cut and replace with gap).
You can also go into Commands > Customize (command-option-K) and assign a different key to Replace with Gap.
If you need to ripple edit the ends (cut), create a small section that is Gap, and hold down the T key while you use the mouse to click drag both ends (double sided trim cursor) of the cut.
Don't worry about the dotted line blade... That just lets you know that the frames on either side of the cut are continuous, or sequential — nothing has been moved yet. Once frames from either side of the mark have been cut, it becomes a full fledged cut resembling a separate clip.

  • Cannot align/trim video clips

I've been trying for the better part of a day to figure out how to precisely align and trim two video clips, but have had no luck. I grew up using Windows Movie Maker quite a bit to edit videos (covers of songs, so they all involve starting with a title slide, fading into a video, and syncing the whole video with a prerecorded audio track),  and what I thought would be universal in video editing programs doesn't seem to work the way I thought.
The main problem I am having is the inability to arrange and edit multiple video clips in a linear fashion. For example, if I have clip A, a few seconds of video with the title of the movie, and clip B, the actual video, I cannot seem to precisely edit the two together. In the background is an audio track, so the video has to be synced with the audio. Problem is, I can't just trim either clip A or clip B by a few frames to get it to sync. If I get the clip of the performance in sync with the audio, inserting a title slide pushes the rest of the video to the side, rather than just overtaking the performance video.
I should also mention that I have another video in the picture-in-picture (rhythm guitar track, lead guitar track), so the two need to be perfectly in sync.
I tried to get around this by cutting the clips to the same length. Each of my two clips that I try to align are 00:03:51:06. I thought that by doing this, I could drag the main video to the timeline, and then insert the picture-in-picture video on top of it so that they would be in sync. iMovie doesn't seem to want to align the two clips even though they are the same length, and not being able to precisely edit them is making it so that I can't align them properly.
I know this is a basic movie editing program and I may be expecting too much of iMovie, but is there something I'm missing here that's preventing me from making clean edits?

    OK I see the problem,
I've made some videoclips in the past (barbershop quartet), and have to admit that iMovie is limited.
As I'm from Holland, it's hard to me to give you an exact advise of what is and isn't possible in English (as all my menu's are in Dutch and not English), as it's also depends on what kind of footage you have and what you're trying to achieve. The only thing I can help you with is point out some directions you could dig into:
    1. You may study the function of beatmarkers and all the possibilities to synchronize music to clips/beatmarkers.
    2. As I mentiond earlier you can possible combine that with thwe functionalitty of the precisoon editor, you can make precis edits as wel for vidoe and audio (put apperntly you already studied that.
    3. For the picture in picture there is no solution (as far as I know). You might experiment with "cutaway" and/or "next to each other" when it comes to inserting clips.
    4. For the production of videopodcasts I used Garageband for fine tuning voice-overs and background music. In Garageband it is possible to make very precise edits on imported video tracks. I asume Logic has similar functionallity. This means you perhaps have to move back and forward video/audio from iMovie to Garageband (or Logic) and visa versa.
If that is all to much of a hassle (which I can imagine) perhaps Final Cut Pro X is you're only option.
Succes, sorry I cann't help you further.

  • Formats for movie clip used in PSE 4 slide show

Still finding it difficult to find documentation of what formats are supported for using digital camera movie clips in PSE 4 slide show.
The movie file from my Canon camera is 640 x 480, 30 fps Motion JPEG and has a .AVI extension. I am able to use it "as is" in a PSE 4 slide show. However, sometimes I need to trim the movie clip in Windows Movie Maker 2 in order to keep only the best part.
My question is what parameters can I specify to save my movie clip in Movie Maker 2 so that I can use it as a movie clip in a Photoshop Elements 4 slide show that will be saved as a WMV file?

    Karin Sue,
    >Also, are the projects saved in a folder somewhere, or only as part of the Catalog?"
The definition of the "project", which is the "Creation" in Organizer terms is saved only in the Catalog.
    >If you publish your creation as a pdf or wmv they are saved in the folder you designate. Once published, I don't believe there is any way to edit. If you save the creation, you can go back and edit and republish if you like.
Yes, the WMV or PDF file is saved in the folder that you designate. You are correct that if you save the Creation, you can go back and re-edit. When you Save the Creation gets a thumbnail within the Organizer photo well and you can click on the thumbnail to go back in to the Creation process make modifications and save a new WMV or PDF file.
Note: that the Save window documents that the PDF choice does not support some options such as Pan and zoom, videos, and certain transitiions.

  • Trimming video clips before editing.

    Hi everyone,
I have searched around and can't seem to find what I'm looking for.
My computer was running very slow and running out of memory to export movies.
After speaking to a friend, he suggested trimming down the clips to the relevant sections then export them as much smaller clips ready for the real edit.
Is there a set procedure for trimming down clips or do you use the raw files to edit with?
I hope this all makes sense.
    My PC setup is:
    4GB RAM
    Quad AMD
    Onboard graphics card (next upgrade)
    Win XP
I'm using Abobe Premiere Pro CS3.
Thanks in advance for your help.

you should do everything humanly possible to make the pc you now have as fast and "lean" as possible for editing. check out hardware section and browse subjects about hard drives and settings and so on.
I have a mousey computer but added an internal hard drive ( 2 internal now ) so programs are on C and media cache is on the other internal. Then I also got an external graid (firewire 800 for me, but if you can use esata thats even better ) and I now use that for my source files..
the thing is, the more you spread the load around the faster it is ( indexing off on all drives )..
check out the threads on hardware and 'best setups' for editing ...there are hundreds of threads...but you do that and it will help you a lot.  just have to do some reading and note taking and then work on the computer to do what you've learned.
after that...if you are still slow and having probs... you can load clips onto timeline one at a time.. and cut ( not trim but cut ) out what you want to use for editing and move those cuts up one video level ( you can cut and then copy paste so your original video clip stays complete in terms of having all the clip there )
use a new sequence for each LARGE CLIP ( eg. one hour clip from tape ?? )..and keep track of everything by naming the sequences well etc...
Then you can create a "final" sequence and move all your CUTS into that... into say for example video 2...
now scrub through stuff and bring what you want down to video level 1 which will be your final edit...
turn off all video and sound in sequences you're not currently using ( after you get done with cuts there ).
I only edit SD as I cant do more than a few minutes of HD before this mouse starts to gasp....fact of life... so if you have to , downscale your hd stuff to SD ( 16: 9 ) and edit THAT instead of HD.
    hope this helps...

  • Cannot trim a clip in Media Import window.

Cannot trim a clip in the Media Import window once I copy the file to my desktop or external drive. However, I can trim the same clip from the original that is on an SD card. I get no "double arrow" icons but do see the entire clip highlighted with the yellow border. I can move this border by holding down the shift key and clicking on the clip but on import the entire clip comes into the Event Browser. Any clues?

You made sure you saved the file as Self-Contained Media? If you save as a reference file, there is nothing in the file except a list of pointers into the original file.
And, it needs to be Quicktime 7 Pro, not Quicktime (X) Player, although you can Trim clips in QTX player and export them, you have no choice what codecs to use (it will be H.264) and no way to set the quality and I'm pretty sure the operation will involve changes to the original media. Also, simply saving a trim edit in QTX will bash the original.

  • Bulk trim multiple clips

    Hi,
My workflow is quite straight forward: log and transfer AVCHD material into FCP 7 by setting in- and out points; then selet all clips and put them on in the sequence (no need to change the order).
I'm looking for a way to trim multiple clips in one batch. With log and transfer I selected my raw (about 200 clips) material and I need lets say about 10 frames on both sites of all clips to set cross dissolves between clips on my sequence.
By doing so I've a default trim of 10 frames on both sites of each clip which a can change for particular clips if needed. I would save me quite some time since right now I trim all clips individually
    Any tips?

If you logged and transferred the clips using the actual timecode you wanted to use, and then told FCP to add 10 second handles, it would have set in and out points where you wanted them, the handles in tact, so you could add your transitions. Something to think about for the future.
As far as your current issue goes, I can offer only a workaround solution that will be faster than setting in and out points for every clip.
Start with your playhead at the beginning of the timeline.
    1. Put 20 seconds of slug in the viewer.
    2. Add a track to the top of your sequence, and two audio tracks to the bottom.
    3. Set the source/destination to the blank tracks (left side of the Timeline window - v1 connected to V2, and a1, a2 to A3, A4 for example).
    4. Press the down arrow to move to the next edit point.
    5. Press F10 to perform an overwrite edit. (Or whatever keystroke you've programmed to be overwrite edit.)
    6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have your slug at every edit point.
    7. Press T once to switch to the "select track forward tool".
    8. Click to the left of the fist slug, on the track that they lie.
    9. Type -10. (that's "minus, ten, period") and press return. (This will move all of the slug backwards 10 seconds - don't forget the period.)
    10. Shift drag the slug down into the track you want to trim.
    11. Press delete (to remove the slug, leaving track gaps between the trimmed clips).
    12. Put your playhead at the beginning of the sequence, then select all of the clips in the timeline and drag them to the CANVAS WINDOW - drop them on the INSERT drop zone.
    13. Delete everything after the last intended track in your timeline.
It seems like a lot of steps, but that's just because I'm trying to be as detailed as possible. It's actually a very fast way to do it.
Other than that, I don't know of a way to bulk-set in/out points.

  • Movie clip transfer times & process & format quality

How long should it take for a movie clip to move from one project to another? I was moving a 18 sec clip that is 120mb and it says it will take 28 minutes, this seems excessive.
Also if I have 5 separate videos already imported into separate projects what is the best way for me to grab partial clips from each one and combine into a new project?
Additionally when I used a DV-NTSC format clip as the source and the new one is MPEG4 format automatically it seems that the quality drops substantially, is this to be expected? What could I do to have this retain the video quality.
    Thanks for the help.

Hi MahiMahi - it depends how long the original source clip is, because when you transfer a clip, it is not just the trimmed, edited clip from your Timeline that is moved but its entire source clip. So if that source clip is much longer than the trimmed version, it could indeed take a long time to transfer.
Did you want the 'new one' to be MPEG4, which is a compressed format? Or did you want it to retain the full DV quality? When you set up a new project you get the chance in the opening window to establish the import format.

  • Audio Lost on movie clips

I had a 5 minute video that I edited down to about 3 minutes. The full 5 minute file has audio, but after I extracted the clips and play them together, there is no audio. Can anyone help me get the audio on the clips?

The .mov or .avi is a designation for a 'container' not a specifc format, and it can be in a variety of codec. Perhaps yours is a codec that iMovie 6 cannot read properly. You may need to convert the footage to .dv and then import into iMovie.
You can use Streamclip for this conversion: http://www.squared5.com/
If your original .mov movies imported and played fine, they should still play ok after you trimmed the clips. You did this by splitting the clip and deleting the unwanted parts? Did you make any other edits, add any other audio tracks?
Did you accidentally uncheck the sound of the track in the timeline view? Did you mute the sound in the video?
Did you use the 'extract audio' command?
Have you looked at the clips in the timeline view, selecting 'View' and 'Show Clip Volume' to be sure that the clip's volume didn't get put too low to be heard?

  • HT6196 how do I edit  a movie clip to get rid of unwanted parts of a clip

how do I edit a movie clip in thelatest version of I movie to get rid of unwanted parts of a clip

You can split a clip into pieces using Quicktime Player.  See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5879?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    for details.
    Second question:
I don't know what you want to acheive but yhe only way I can think of to move a precise time into a clip is to select it and trim it - whilst trimming the time amount trimmed is displayed.  Stop when you have the right amount then position the playhead there.  You can then 'untrim it' and he playhead will be at the desired spot.

  • Trimming Movies = Lost Disk Space?

    Hi Guys,
I'm using FCE4. I've captured a bunch of clips from old 8mm tapes and have them in a bin in FCE. I right click on them, choose "open in editor" to get them in a quicktime window. Then I trim the clip to just the portion I want to keep and choose "Trim to Selection." Quicktime lops off the beginning and end and bam - I've got only the video I want.
If I open the movie inspector within quicktime, it shows me that the newly trimmed video is taking up less space than it used to. However, if I look at the video file in the finder, the finder shows that the video is still taking up the same amount of space as it did before I trimmed it.
This is a problem, because I have hundreds of videos to trim and the wasted space is going to add up. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!
    -Bryan Jones

After you trim it try doing a Save As. You might also try this question on the QuickTime forum, where there are people you work with that application.

Let us start from the beginning.
It has been established that you have Premiere Elements 10. On what computer operating system is it running?
There has not been a File Menu/Export/Movie export opportunitity in Premiere Elements since version 7. We are not up to version 12.
For Premiere Elements 10, your export opportunities are all in Share/ including one for Computer. Under Computer there are several choices. The ones that you see are Adobe Flash Video, MPEG, and AVCHD. The others you have to scroll down to. And those choices are AVI, Windows Media, QuickTime, Image, and Audio. You do not have to use the scroll bar for this. You can click on Adobe Flash Video panel to get it to turn black. Then use the down arrow to go down the list and the up arrow to go up the list. Once you get to a category, you can select a preset and go with it or customize it under the Advanced Button/Video Tab and Audio Tab of the preset.
If you post the properties of your source media that you want to try to match in the export, I would be glad to suggest the exact settings for you.
We will be watching for your follow up with details.
    Thank you.
    ATR
Add On...The Premiere Elements 10 File Menu is for more than Saving, just not exporting. One of the key features that can be access there is the Project Archiver. More on that another time.

  • Unable to Sync Quicktime Movie Clips with IPOD

I am a new ipod user having difficulty syncing Quicktime movie clips to IPOD.
Clips are saved as .mov files and Itunes will play.
However I cannot get them to sync woth IPOD.
Any ideas - Do I need to convert to annother format?

First you need to import your movies into iTunes. Do this by opening iTunes <File> <Import> <Movies> then choose the movie you want to put on your iPod. Make sure the movie has .mov at the end otherwise it won't be set up the way it's supposed to be.
Once the movie is imported into iTunes right click on it so a pull down menu appears. Click on <Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone>. It should begin converting it on its own and when it's done you'll hear the typical sound that happens after importing a cd, telling you the operation is complete.
After it's converted, you will have 2 identical movies in your menu. If you <Get Info> on each, you should be able to see which is newest version; that is the movie you are going to want to sync.
Then plug your iPod in to iTunes, go to the movie tab in iPod summary and check off the converted movies you want to sync to your iPod. Press <Sync> and that should add your movies to your iPod.
    Hope this helps.

  • Yellow triangle and a grayed out movie clip

Hi, I created a project in iMovie 08, kind of elaborate for me, with several movie clips, each with a transition, and background music from iTunes through out the majority of the 3 minute and 30 second final project. Initially, all was well and the project played perfectly. A couple of days later when I went into iMovie 08 to enhance the project, several clips were grayed out and had a yellow triangle in the clip. Placing the cursor over the clip resulted in the clip "coming to life" that is revealing the clip but the clip was not visible in the browser and the grayed out clips were not visible if I played the project in full screen mode. If I published the project to the web, the grayed out clips would not show (the video portion); the audio which was part of the whole project would play. I do not think I moved any clips to a different location although I certainly added other clips to iPhoto and then to iMovie. I just finished the lynda.com training on iMovie 08 which was just released and I got no help from that training on the yellow triangle problem. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.

Great news! After some browsing around, I located the problem, and now my movie project is fixed!
As it turns out, videos that are located in iPhoto are referenced based on the Event that they belong to, which means that if you change the name of the Event that the picture belongs to then iMovie will no longer be able to find your picture. (This is also why the clips appear in the lower section of iMovie, because they are still there, just in a renamed or merged event.)
I was able to fix the problem very easily by renaming my event back to the original name, and then after closing and restarting iMovie all the nasty little yellow triangles were gone and all my clips were back as if they'd never left.
This may or may not help, but for me, to make sure that I got the event name correct, I found the movie file (which was in "Movies/iMovie Projects") and then right mouse clicked and selected "Show Package Contents" so that I could see what was in my project, and then opened the "Project" file, which had the names listed in it. Hope that helps!
