Trouble calling a method...

I'm writing a stat roller program for my java class, but I'm having a slight problem. I have a combo box panel object, and the Roll object which I am trying to work with. When I try to call the method to assign a value to my array, is says...
"Cannot make a static reference to a non-static method getRoll() from the type Roll()"
Here is the code from the 2 objects...
First the Combo Box Panel Object..
package StatRoller;
import java.awt.GridLayout;
import java.util.Random;
import javax.swing.JComboBox;
import javax.swing.JLabel;
import javax.swing.JPanel;
public class StatBoxPanel extends JPanel
     private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
     private int STAT_NUM = 5;
     private int[] stat1 = new int[STAT_NUM];
     private JComboBox strBox;
     private JComboBox dexBox;
     private JComboBox conBox;
     private JComboBox intelBox;
     private JComboBox wisBox;
     private JComboBox chaBox;
     public StatBoxPanel()
          stat1[0] = Roll.getRoll();
          setLayout(new GridLayout(6,1));
          strBox = new JComboBox();
          dexBox = new JComboBox();
          conBox = new JComboBox();
          intelBox = new JComboBox();
          wisBox = new JComboBox();
          chaBox = new JComboBox();
          add(strBox);
          add(dexBox);
          add(conBox);
          add(intelBox);
          add(wisBox);
          add(chaBox);
     public int modBox()
}and the Roll object...
package StatRoller;
import java.util.Random;
public class Roll
     int ROLL_NUM = 3;
     Random roll = new Random();
     int[] str = new int[ROLL_NUM];
     public Roll()
          str[0] = roll.nextInt(6);
          str[1] = roll.nextInt(6);
          str[2] = roll.nextInt(6);
          str[3] = roll.nextInt(6);
          for(int i = 0; str[i] <= 0; i++)
               str[i] = roll.nextInt(6);
          selectionSort(str);
     public int getRoll()
          int total = 0;
          total = str[1] + str[2] + str[3];
          return total;
     public static void selectionSort(int[] array)
          int startScan, index, minIndex, minValue;
          for (startScan = 0; startScan < (array.length-1); startScan++)
               minIndex = startScan;
               minValue = array[startScan];
               for(index = startScan + 1; index < array.length; index++)
                    if(array[index] < minValue)
                         minValue = array[index];
                         minIndex = index;
               array[minIndex] = array[startScan];
               array[startScan] = minValue;
}I need to know why when I call getRoll, I can't assign the value it returns to the stat1 array in the Combo Box Panel object.

All I'm trying to do now is get away from the combo boxes. What I've decided I want to do is use Radio Buttons, so that when they are selected they call getRoll, and set the text of a TextField to the number getRoll generates.
Yet, I still can't get away from making a static reference to a non-static method. Any suggestions?
I could really use some help.
Thanks.

  • Calling a method within an application?

    Hi I'm a student taking an intro Java class and right now I have to develop and application that prompts for someone to input a character of the alphabet and it will display the corresponding number on a telephone that it is listed under. The main method gets the input from the user and we are required to retrieve the corresponding digit to the character from a separate method using either a switch statement or a nested if-then-else statement to determine what the digit is. I'm having trouble calling that method in the main class which is another requirement. any suggestions?
    public class Hmwk08
         * Main driver begins program execution.
         * @param args program arguments
        public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception
            char letter;
            char ch;
            int relatesTo;
            PrintStream win = new PrintStream(System.out);
            Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in);
            String newLine = System.getProperty("line.separator");
            win.println("Given a letter of the alphabet, this program" + newLine
                        + "will tell you the corresponding digit on a" + newLine
                        + "telephone keypad.");
            win.println();
            win.print("Enter a letter: ");
            letter = in.nextLine().charAt(0);
            letter = Character.toUpperCase(letter);
         * Get the digit on a telephone keypad that corresponds
         * to the specified character. If the character is neither
         * a letter nor a digit, this method will retun the
         * asterisk character: '*'
         * @param letter the specified character
         * @return the corresponding digit
        private static char getPhoneDigit(char letter)
            char digit;
            digit = '*';
            if(letter == 'A' || letter == 'B' || letter == 'C')
                digit = '1';
            return digit;
    }

    Your method is static so you can call your method without creating a Hmwk08 object.
    char result = getPhoneDigit(letter);Would suffice in your main method

  • Problems calling a method from a different class

    Like many programmers, I'm having a go at making my own chat room. All has been going well so far, however I am having trouble calling the method which connects the client to the server, from the method which actually starts the server.
    The method for starting the server:
    public static void serverStart () throws IOException {
            new Thread () {
            public void run() {
                try {
                    ServerSocket serverSock = new ServerSocket (client.serverPort);
                while (true) {
                    Socket serverClient = serverSock.accept ();
                    ChatHandler handler = new ChatHandler(serverClient);
                    handler.start ();
                } catch (IOException ex) {
                    connectTo.handleIOException(ex);
            }.start();
            try {
                connectTo.start();
            } catch (IOException ex) {
                connectTo.handleIOException(ex);
        }The part of interest is the "connectTo.start()" line, as this is the one which calls a method in the class connectToMethod which tells the client to connect to this newly started server. Now for the client connection code:
    public synchronized void start () throws IOException {
          if (listener == null) {
              Socket socket = new Socket (client.serverAddr, client.serverPort);
              try {
                  dataIn = new DataInputStream
                          (new BufferedInputStream (socket.getInputStream ()));
                  dataOut = new DataOutputStream
                          (new BufferedOutputStream (socket.getOutputStream ()));
              } catch (IOException ex) {
              socket.close ();
              throw ex;
          listener = new Thread (this);
          listener.start ();
      }Now when the server starts, it should automatically start the connection method "start()" and connect to itself. However I am getting a NullPointerException error at the line "connectTo.start();" from the server code. The server and connection client actually work separately, just not when I try to connect from the server itself. I have tried a few ways of getting around this problem, all without success. If anyone could give some input on what might be wrong, or a possible way to fix it, I'd be very grateful.

    Sorry, connectTo comes from:
    connectToMethod connectTo = new
    connectToMethod();
    That doesn't necessarily mean this variable reference is the same one as in the code where the NullPointerException was thrown though.
    Or the exception was thrown inside the start() method. The runtime isn't lying to you. You have a null reference (pointer) where it says you do.

    Here is my full program. Like I said in my last post. I am having trouble calling the baseMakesError1 method. This method is called in the subcallsbase1 method. Also, it would be of great help if you could look for any other errors with with my program. Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.

  • Calling a Method in a Parent Class

    I have Class A that instantiates Class B which in turn instantiates Class C. Is there a way to call a method in Class A from Class C without having to pass a reference of A all the way down to C? Is there thread stack information that I can access that will allow me to get Class A's 'handle'?

    tpaulsz wrote:
    The OP is not confusing instantiates with inherits.
    Class A is class that's exposing web service methods.
    Class B represents a group of business rule classes.
    Class C is transaction handler class that is responsible for checking out connections from a db connections pool.
    The web services all require user information, for auth and auth purposes, and they've not been required outside of Class A - until now. I now have to provide RLS on the database information so I need the user information for the Oracle Proxy User connection property.
    This is a very mature application with many Class A and Class B classes so passing the user information from class to class would be a big job. Furthermore, there are some non-user processes that will also be calling on Class C that don't need RLS. Since the StackElements are available through Thread.currentThread().getStackTrace(), I was hoping that there was another stack that I could traverse to eventually find a Class A class that's been set up with an with interface that has a getUserInfo method.Any you wanted to extract the user info for every single database operation even when a single business rule calls more than one?
    Or when a single web service operation calls more than one business rule?
    If you don't do that then how did you plan on letting method B know that method A has already done it?
    You might be able to stick the data in a ThreadLocal if there is in fact only one thread of execution.
    Myself I always considered attempting to manage web users of a business application via a a database or OS authentication to be more trouble than it was worth.

  • Applet fails to call Javascript methods

    I'm trying to implement round-trip javascript to Java to Javascript using LiveConnect, and having a lot of trouble in Firefox. It works perfectly in IE 6. In Firefox, I can successfully call a method of an applet, and get a return value. I have not been able to get the applet to call a Javascript method. I have tried using both the call and eval methods of the JSObject with no luck. Below is my code. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    import java.applet.Applet;
    import java.awt.*;
    import netscape.javascript.*;
    public class test extends Applet {
         String message="Hello Universe!";
         JSObject proxy;

              g.drawString(message, 20, 20);

              proxy = jso;
              // try just calling straight eval
              proxy.eval("alert('eval')");
              // set up args object to pass to js method
              Object[] args = new Object[1];
              args[0] = "handshake";
              // call method of js object 2 different ways
              proxy.call("callback", args);
              proxy.eval("o.callback('eval')");
              return true;
         // update java display to show JS to J communication
         public void setMessage(String message) {
              this.message = message;
              repaint();
    <html>

         <script>
              // js object to receive calls from applet
              function obj() {};
              obj.prototype = new Object();
              obj.prototype.callback = function(arg) {
                   alert("callback: " + arg);
              function doit() {
                   var a = gebi("myApplet");
                   a.setMessage("Goodbye World!");
                   o = new obj();
                   // test that js method works (it does)
                   o.callback("local");
                   // call applet method which should call back to js method
                   var there = a.handshake(o);
                   // show return value from applet method call
                   alert("there: " + there);
              window.onload = doit;
         </script>
    </head>

         <applet
              id="myApplet"
              code="test"
              width="400"
              height="50"
              mayscript="mayscript">
         </applet>
    </body>
    </html>Results:
    In both IE and Firefox, the string shown by the applet switches to "goodbye world", the local call to the callback function works, and the call to handshake returns true.
    That's all that works in Firefox.
    In IE, the various calls to the callback method, and to the alert method of the Javascript all work.
    The results are the same whether I run the HTML page as a local file, or through IIS.
    I have also noticed that Firefox seems to hang up, crash, and just have a lot of problems dealing with this code.
    Finally, I am running all of this on XP professional SP1 with J2SE 1.5.0_04-b05 and Firefox 1.07

    Hi,
    Thanks for all your replies. Does this work on Java 5 too? Could you please share the complete code snippet which makes it work? I tried working on yours but no success.

    Alok

    var arr = req.responseText;
    hello.innerHTML = arr;
    Thanks a Lot

    This might be a stupid question, but do you have the method's
    access set to
    remote? You are calling it via HTTP.

  • AutomationException while calling a method

    Hi all,
    I've got a problem accessing a COM/DCOM component in a Win2k box (Advanced Server)
    with jcom. I configured the server and client described in the "JSP to COM" example.
    The only difference: I don't want to access the excel sheet and I don't use a jsp
    to execute.
    I used the java2com.exe to create the proxies from my dll ScriptableUniversalTransAgt.dll.
    But when I try to call a method on the dll via Java, I get the exception:

    The attachment contains some log files and my program with the dll.
    Maybe someone can help me?

  • Generically calling a method on an object

    Hello,
    I am trying to write a small utility method to generically call a method on an object.
    This is what I have.
        public static void doCall(Object o, String methodName, Object ... args){
            Class[] types = new Class[args.length];
            int i = 0;
            for(Object arg : args){
                types[i] = arg.getClass();
            try {
                Method m = o.getClass().getMethod(methodName, types);
                m.invoke(o, args);
            } catch (Exception e) {
                e.printStackTrace();
                throw new RuntimeException("Error dynamically calling method " + methodName + " on " + o.toString());
        }It doesn't work because it can't find the method. If I hard code the parameter types as "new Object[] {Double.TYPE}" it works fine (on methods that take a double).
    So, my question is, how can I generically set up the parameter types based on the types of the arguments?
    Thanks,
    ~Eric

    The problem is not on calling agr.getClass(), your primitive double is already autoboxed to a Double object. It is the doCall(...) method who expects an object, not a primitive. So when giving it a primitive value, java autoboxes it to the corresponding object type.
    This means your attempt will only work if the methods to call do not have any primitives as parameters.
    Test this code:
    public class GenericMethodCaller {
         public static void doCall(Object o, String methodName, Object ... args){
            Class[] types = new Class[args.length];
            int i = 0;
            for(Object arg : args){
                types[i++] = arg.getClass();
            try {
                Method m = o.getClass().getMethod(methodName, types);
                m.invoke(o, args);
            } catch (Exception e) {
                e.printStackTrace();
                throw new RuntimeException("Error dynamically calling method " + methodName + " on " + o.toString());
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              Callable callee = new Callable();
              callee.callabelMethod(10d);
              GenericMethodCaller.doCall( callee, "callabelMethod", 10d ); // 10d gets autoboxed to a Double object.
    class Callable {
         public void callabelMethod(Double o) {
              System.out.println("callabelMethod(Double o) called");
         public void callabelMethod(double o) {
              System.out.println("callabelMethod(double o) called");
    }The output will be:
    callabelMethod(double o) called
    callabelMethod(Double o) called

    Hi
    I am using Jdeveloper 11.1.1.6.0 and using ADF contextual events..
    I have a drop down list and i am rasiing a contextual event on changing the current selection. In response to that event i want to call a backing bean method with parameters.. But when i click on the subscriber section for the contextual event, i can see only some bindings of the page.. How can i call a method on backing bean as a subscriber..
    Thanks

    Hi,
    this article has a use case for the POJO approach: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/issue-archive/2011/11-may/o31adf-352561.html
    Another is to define a method binding in the receiving PageDef file and configure it as explained here

  • Any way (event) to call Java method after view created in JSF 2.0

    Hi,
    I am using JSF 2.0 Mojarra's implementation.
    I am interested to know if there is a way to call Java methods before and/or after view has been restored.
    I wanted to initialize data for my page in this Java method.
    I could see there is an event class PostRestoreStateEvent added in JSF 2.0. How to use it?
    I tired to use f:event element as below, but it does not work. Can anyone share anyother idea to achieve this behaviour?
    <f:metadata>
    <f:event type="postRestoreState" listener="#{employeeLoadBean.loadAfterRestoreView}"/>
    </f:metadata>
    Regards,
    Kishore K S

    Hi,
    The problem is solved as below.
    <f:metadata>
    <f:event type="javax.faces.event.PostRestoreStateEvent" listener="#{employeeViewEventListener.postRestoreState}"/>
    </f:metadata>
    The above calls the Java method #{employeeViewEventListener.postRestoreState} whenever View has been restored.
    It was not working when shortName of the event (ie., postRestoreState) is given and throwing ClassNotFound exception.

    Hi,
    When you use the database value directly in your BDC, you will have this issue. It is always advisable to use character fields when doing BDC. so change it to charecter field and try it..

  • How to call a method in one JSP from another JSP?

    say that I have 2 JSPs.
    JSP one has a button.
    JSP two has some method that, say, find the square root of the number passed from JPS one.
    How to - when click - the button on page one call the method on page two?
    Please note that I can not use object binding, but I want passing the actual parameter and call the method on page two.
    Please note that this is an update of a previous post on the same topic called "Object scope".
    Thank you all very much.

    No, i dont know how to call other than main methods from other classes
    And one more doubt i have i.e. Like in C can we see the execution of the program like how the code is being compiled step by step and how the value of the variable changes from step to step like(Add Watch).........

  • Is it possible to call a method in a servlet from  a java script ?

    I need to do a dynamic html page . In the page i select some things and then these things must communicate whit a servlet because the servlet will do some DB querys and update the same webpage.
    So is it possible to actually call a method of a servlet from a java script? i want to do something that looks like this page:
    http://www.hebdo.net/v5/search/search.asp?rubno=4000&cregion=1011&sid=69DHOTQ30307151
    So when u select something in the first list the secodn list automaticly updates.
    thank you very much

    You can
    1. load all the options when loading the page and
    set second selection options when user selected
    the first; or
    2. reload the page when user select first selection
    by 'onChange' event; or
    3. using iframe so you only need to reload part of
    the page.
