Trouble Getting Attributes into Workflow

Question

I'm fairly new to Workflow and witting my first function. I'm having a bit of trouble getting attributes from a form to Workflow. I have define the attributes in PAAPINVW.wft through the workflow builder. In a function I used the API wf_engine.GetItemAttrText and wf_engine.GetItemAttrNumber to retrieve them. The problem is the attributes are coming in as Null values and I can see the values in the Form. What step(s) did I miss in retrieving the Form attributes? Thanks in advance for your help.
My retrieval code from the function I wrote is:

Hi,
You need to write something to populate the values - just creating the attributes to store them isn't enough.
You can either customize the form to include the attributes in the mechanism that initiates the workflow, or you can include an additional activity in your code to pick the values up from a table and store them in the workflow.
