Why do image links in my HTML signature get turned into inline images?

I have written a program to create HTML signature files for email programs at my workplace.
The signature file uses URLs to images hosted on a server. This appears to work fine, but I've noticed that when I send an email from Icedove (Thunderbird rebadged for Debian), the image links automatically get turned into attachments. These are then visible as base64-encoded MIME blocks in the email source.
I cannot find any option for altering this behaviour anywhere in the application, even in the Config Editor.
Can anybody advise me how to change this behaviour? Thanks in advance.
I am running Icedove v.17 for Debian 64 bit.

By default Thunderbird attaches all images, even if the <img> element points to a remote resource. Most e-mail clients block remote content these days unless the user authorizes it (see [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/991448 this thread] for an in-depth discussion) due to potential privacy/tracking issues. Thus, the image your are adding as a remote resource may not display the first time the recipient opens the message.
If you want to change your code respectively anyway, have a look at [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_complex_mails_with_inline_images#Remote_images this article]. You'll have to add an attribute <img '''moz-do-not-send="true"'''> to the element which will Tell Thunderbird to ''not'' download the image from the server and embedding it into the message on sending.

  • Using webmail in Mozilla Firefox 17.0.1 on Windows 8, original messages get turned into html code when I reply to or forward them. How can I fix this?

    I have tried re-setting Firefox and working in Safe Mode, but the problem still recurs. I use Fastmail as my webmail server and never had this problem on Windows XP or Windows 7. When I reply to a message, the original message is turned into html code. The same happens when I forward a message.
    My JavaScript is up to date, in case that's relevant. The Fastmail support team suggested the problem would be Firefox-related.
    The other function of my Fastmail account that isn't working properly in Firefox 17.0.1. is the search function.
    Do I need to get new plugins or something? I don't know where the HTML editor is in Firefox or if that's what's wrong.

    Thanks for your reply, cor-el. Norton 360 came pre-installed on the laptop as part of the package I bought. I haven't changed the pre-set firewall or anti-virus settings. Should I change something?
    I will try rebooting in Windows Safe mode as you say and report if that makes any difference.

  • Requirements for HTML to get converted into masterpage by Design Manager

    Hi All, I am new SharePoint Developer. I am not designer, doesn't know much about CSS. I am getting HTML from outside. We have prepared the Wireframe in Visio as how the top and bottom should look like. My question is - Is there anything that I need to give
    to the Designer who doesn't know SharePoint? Is there any guidelines to prepare the HTML? Should I need to give them SharePoint CSS Chart or something that I should give it to designer? or It would be just plan basic HTML and CSS and Design Manager would convert
    itself?
    Please advise.
    Regards,
    Khushi

    If your designer has not used SharePoint before then the only thing you need to tell him/her is to take care of the html/xml validation. HTML should be W3C compliant. He can use any online tool to validate his HTML. There is a tool available on W3C.org (??)
    as well. All tags should have ending tags. Once you have the validated HTML, SharePoint will take care of the rest. Design manager will convert your default html file into a master page. Remaining html pages will have to be converted into SharePoint pages
    manually (Create pages in the Pages library). Ask your designer to layout the site using three sections: Header, Content and Footer. It will make your life much easier if you had these three sections in the master page.  Then all you will need to do is
    add content in the Content area of each of the remaining site page.
    Btw, I have written a complete chapter on this topic in my new book on SharePoint (See my signature below for link). It is available in Kindle edition also if you want to get an immediate access to it.

    I just updated to OS5 and all of my video and music files are gone and now I have an inaccessible "other" file about the size of the of the old music and video files.  When I go to sync music files in itunes they never show up on the phone.  Help!

    Never mind.  Just read some similar questions and tried restoring it to backed up version and now everything seems to be working.  What a relief!

    Problem is when I make a color swatch and then drag it into the swatches panel it immediatly turns the color swatch into pattern swatches. Which is what I do not want. How do I correct this?
    thanks
    forgt to mention Ia m using AI CC version 17.1

    Don't drag the object into the swatches panel. Instead select the object, focus the fill and use the new swatch button

  • Can you wrap an image with a link in an html email signature?

    When I cite a remotely hosted image in an html signature, and try to make that image a link, the link is ignored and the just the image is shown.
    e.g.:
    <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ubiquia/146019678805381" target="_blank">
    <img style=" position:absolute;
    height:30px;
    width:30px;
    left:172px;
    top:157.5px"
    src="http://png.findicons.com/files/icons/2779/simple_icons/48/facebook_48_black.png" alt="ubiquia facebook" moz-do-not-send="true"
    >
    </a>

    For each icon that you want to use in your email signature:
    locate icon on internet webpage - right-click on the icon and select 'Save Image as'. Save the icon to your computer in a suitable file.
    Then in Thunderbird
    insert > Image
    choose file - locate the saved icon on your computer
    click on Link tab and enter the www etc webpage link info
    click on OK to insert image with link.
    Codewise, where you have the actual icon you would need something stating where the icon is located:
    eg
    <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ubiquia/146019678805381" target="_blank">
    path to image saved on computer included in within <> </a>

  • Image in html signature doesn't appear

    I've tried this tutorial to put together an html signature including images.
    http://allforces.com/2006/04/14/css-signatures/
    As you can see at Step 6, the image shows when the signature is selected. When I compose an email however, I always get a 'blue question mark icon' as if the link to the image can't be found. I'm using images which are online, saved the html file as a webarchive file in safari etc. When I send the email anyway to for example my gmail address, the signature is ok and the image shows in the signature.
    Why does the image doesn't show when I am writing the email and include the signature? Why do I get a blue question mark icon when writing the email? Perhaps I should point out that we're using IMAP should that matter.
    The image should appear as it does in Step 6 in that tutorial. What could be wrong?

    Hi there,
    I had a similar problem with my .mac (mobileme) mail account. Followed basically same approach: I created the html signature in TextEdit and saved as a webarchive when opened in Safari. Then renamed it to have same name as existing non-html signature file in Home > Library > Signatures
    (So, for those who are new to this, it basically replaces the one your mac created when you create a signature within Mail Prefs > Signatures; but even though you replace it, it needs to have the same name so it knows which mail account it applies to; I have 4 mail accounts in my program, with 4 sigs I created via the Prefs, so there were 4 of those sig files in Library).
    Then I uploaded the image to an external server. Made sure I reselected the signature in the middle pane of the Prefs > Signatures area and dragged it over to the mail account.
    Composed mail using .mac account, new signature DID appear (but it doesn't when looking at Prefs > Sig pane; that shows the ? mark because it doesn't go get the image at the external server, I guess). *Problem: when I sent mail as a test, it wouldn't show up in the mail that I sent.*
    I just figured that Apple was stripping out the html sig. But today I tested again and it's there.
    Somewhere in this thread, one of the guys mentioned giving it some time. That seems to have worked for me.
    Just wanted to share because more and more people are starting to add html sigs.
    (P.S. Also created these html sigs for my other, non-mobileme mail accounts and they appeared in the sent mail as soon as I sent the mail. No delay.)

  • HTML Signature Problem - Images not showing

    Hi all,
    I've got some HTML signatures that I use in Mail (v4.3) on Snow Leopard (10.6.4). They were created quite a while ago and have been working fine. BUT... I need to update them to change some of the information. So, I went through the usual rigamarole:
    - Edit the HTML file
    - Open the HTML file in Safari (v5.0.2)
    - Save the file as a webarchive from Safari
    - Find the appropriate file in the ~/Library/Mail/Signatures folder
    - Replace the file with the new webarchive (renamed)
    When I do this, now, Mail will not show the image that I have in the signature (which is a background image placed in the file using CSS and referenced as a URL from my web server).
    Does anyone know why the old signature (created the same way, but using an old version of Mail & Safari) works... but doing it all over again using the current version doesn't?
    Thanks!

    Anything you paste in the HTML is your responsibility. iWeb doesn't care about it. If it doesn't work, too bad.
    Perhaps Posterous doesn't like to be displayed.
    Ask them.
    And instead of pasting garbage (not pretty stock standard) you may want to consider using proper code  :
    <iframe src="http://hamptoncycles.posterous.com/" frameborder="0" width="900" height="1050" scrolling="no" allowTransparency="true"></iframe
    You'll never now if that is the problem.

  • Linking from a html webpage to an image in a photoflow component

    Hello,
    I will apologise first as I am very new to the world of flash but am trying to do something that (to me) seems fairly complicated.
    I am using the photoflow component in flash as an image viewer, I would like to link to individual images within the viewer from html webpages.
    I have a link in a HTML page. The link goes to a .swf file that shows a  gallery of images that are defined in an xml file.
    Currently I can define the startposition of the .swf file in the xml  file in a simple way (i.e. center). Can I define the start position in  the HTML link to go to the desired image?
    In other words
    link 1 = Startposition Image 1
    link 2 = Startposition image 2
    link 3 .... etc.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Hannah

    Thanks again, Rick.
    Either I am doing something wrong or the Shortcut Control is not an option for me.  I want to just give up this as I have spent WAY too much time trying it over and over again.  I deleted the spaces from the folder names, tried various versions of the relative link, and still cannot access these files from the chm directly in my working folder (not called from the application where it will eventually live).  I know this solution worked for me before. I’m just not sure what is happening now.  It seems that RH doesn’t recognize the path and file and, when I try to alter the reference, RH reverts to whatever I had originally specified in the “Program to open” field.   ☹  The shortcut does work when I use an absolute path (file:///D:/RoboHelpProjects/help/HardwareTroubleshooting/index.php/Hardware_Guide.html<f ile:///D:\RoboHelpProjects\help\HardwareTroubleshooting\index.php\Hardware_Guide.html>) but I cannot do that since  the app will not absolutely be stored in the same place for every customer.  I have to find a way to use a relative path in which the ./help directory is located one level above the root directory (D:/pcs/help…).
    You have been so helpful, but I really don’t want to keep bugging you.  Do you know of any links to online tutprials for the JavaScript option you mentioned?  I have never worked with that before.
    Thanks again…Kim

  • HTML Signature Not Displaying Images

    I have an html signature which I tried to add to my Mac Mail app by following this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ukn9H3AEEA.

  • Why are images being copied from a linked library that aren't modified

    I'm trying out the linked library feature and that is my preffered way of using iPhoto but I notice that many images that haven't been modified in iPhoto are being copied as full res modified images. My camera Nikon D2x supports auto rotation of verticle images which keeps me from having to manualy rotate these images. I understand that when I modify an image using iPhoto's tools that a full res image will be copied into a modified folder but why are images that have simply been tagged in camera as needing rotation being copied as well. Vertical images account for at least half of all images I shoot and diplaying them properly should be a look at exif or other metadata and applying rotation but since they are images straight from camera they shouldn't show as modified. Anyone have experience or suggestions on how to avoid having auto rotated images show as modified?

    blinden:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I ran into that but in a different way. I had all of my image files in folders on a second HD and used another application to manage them. I decided to use iPhoto's alias method to work with the same files. I got a lot of files that were copied over as modified. Have no idea why. I ended up doing global revert to Original several times, watching the Modified folder via the Finder, until it became empty. I then closed iPhoto, dragged the Modified folder to the trash and then launched iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and rebuild the library using the first three options. That worked and got me a pristine library.
    I had not figured out why that happened. I've had the auto-rotate turned off for about a year now. Had I know what was causing it I could have checked to see if all of those bogus modified files occurred before I had turned off that option in the camera. I'm guessing now that that's what I would have found. Thanks for the info.

  • Old html signature keeps appearing

    Hi,
    I created an html signature for my mail account. It has worked fine. Very simple. Just a link to an image (png) on my server.
    The thing is, yesterday I altered the image slightly, saved, uploaded to server (overwrote the original), created the new webarchive, replaced the existing webarchive file in the Home--> Library --> Mail --> Sig folder. Renamed new webarchive file to match previous. When I compose new mail, the old signature appears. This happens even though it doesn't exist anymore in the Sig folder. And the image doesn't exist anymore on my server.
    So, I decided to trash everything and start again. In Mail prefs, created the default sig in order to generate/establish the file in the Sig folder. Then created the html doc (with correct link to png file on my server), opened in Safari, saved as webarchive to my desktop. Opened that webarchive just to check that the sig appeared correctly. It did. Then, replaced the existing webarchive file (showing default sig created 5 minutes earlier within Mail Prefs) with this new one. Renamed it with the just replaced file's name. Dragged the sig from the middle pane of the Prefs window over to the account I wanted it for, opened new message window. And . . . .
    The OLD signature (the previous image, that is, that I overwrote on my server) still keeps appearing! But as with the first example above, it doesn't exist anywhere!
    Anyone have any ideas why this is happening and what to do about it? Is it just some lag on cached images maybe? It's gone on for a day or two.
    One other thing I noticed completely by accident: I open a new message window, the old sig appears. I move cursor to the drop down menu above the window to the right to check the signature selected. It's the right one. I click to select it again (even though it's already selected) and then the newer sig appears, replacing the older one. However, when I send the email to myself, no sig appears in the mail I receive.
    Go figure! But again, any thoughts?
    Many thanks.

  • Apple Mail - HTML Signature Help

    I created a html signature that I assumed would work in Apple Mail, but when I send an email I get the images and links not showing up with blue ? appearing.  The signature looks fine in the signatures menu of my preferences.
    <Edited by Host>

    Making a fancy HTML signature is a little more involved than that. It's not very user friendly. There are a number of tutorials on the internet for hacking them up. Here is one example: http://www.tuaw.com/2010/10/16/mac-101-making-a-fancy-signature-in-mail-app/ and there are many others.
    PS - I have asked the hosts to remove all the personal information from your post. You don't want that there.

  • Anchor sign on html signature

    I generated an html signature using TB. İmages and writing are all fine, however, there appears an anchor sign/image in front of the signature, which can not be deleted or selected at all. The anchor doesn't disappear once the email is sent. It could still be view on the receivers account. How can I remove it?

    If the anchor sign is black on a yellow background then you inserted a named anchor into your signature.
    anchors are used to point to another location within the same email.
    So if you had a couple of headings which you want people to click on in order to auto jump to another section of the email without having to scroll down. You would create Named Anchors. It is a special link to jump to another section within the same email.
    In your case, it would appear that you may have selected 'Insert' > 'Named Anchor' and not required it ? Either create a new signature or edit the saved html file to remove the named anchor.
    or maybe you did something like this:
    Created a Named Anchor in the signature so that later you could create a link in the email to your eg: contact details which are contained in the signature?
    So if people click on the content link they are auto jumped down to your signature ? Very useful if you are creating a lengthy email.
    The Anchor sign will show when you open a new write message.
    Enter text and maybe a link to the named anchor.
    If you save the new Write email into Drafts, you will see that the 'anchor' does not show and the link to the anchor shows as an underlined hyperlink.
