Trouble pairing bluetooth keyboard with mac mini

I bought a generic bluetooth keyboard and I am trying to use it with a Mac mini using 10.6.8.  The bluetooth setup sees "Bluetooth Keyboard" and connects to it.  I enter the passcode on the keyboard, but after about 25 seconds it says "The pairing attempt was unsuccessful.  This configuration of Mac OS X and Bluetooth software could be invalid or unsupported."  If I watch the bluetooth control panel during this process, it says it is connected and paired as soon as I hit "return" but then disappears when I get the message.  I already tried trashing com.apple.bluetooth.plist and restarting.  I made sure nothing was on top of the Mac, and turned off the WiFi on my router, but nothing helps.

Update:  I tried to pair with my bluetooth cell phone.  If I initiate the connection from the Mac, same thing.  However, I was able to successfully pair and download pictures, if I initiate from the phone.  ???

  • HT2995 Trouble Pairing Bluetooth speaker with Mac Mini

I can't seem to get the Bluetooth on my Mac Mini to recognize my LG wireless speakers (though the Bluetooth on my iPad recognizes the LG wireless speakers). Any thoughts on how to correct this?
The Mac Mini simply does not seem to recognize that the LG speaker exists.  I know the LG speaker is in Bluetooth discxoverable mode, as my iPad sees it.

You do have the iPad's BT turned off, right, when you try to pair with the Mac?
Better yet, on the iPad make sure the speakers are unpaired-removed, and then try pairing with your mini.

  • Problems pairing wireless keyboard with Mac mini

    Hi,
I just bought a new Mac mini with wireless keyboard and mouse and cannot pair the wireless keyboard during the initial set up. Took out the batteries, turned off the mini, still doesn't work. I'm looking into borrowing a regular USB keyboard an running through the set up with this so I can get started. Is there another solution?
    Thanks.

Isn't it great when you solve your own problems. The USB keyboard allowed me to get up an running. When I went to the bluetooth preferences, I set up the wireless keyboard and haven't had a problem since.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Can't pair bluetooth keyboard with apple tv

just updated Apple tv and it can't discover my bluetooth keyboard

I wanted to use an older, unused Apple Bluetooth Extended keyboard (this one originally came with an iMac G5, white keys, clear casing) but it refused to pair. Several times, the Apple TV said "pairing" and spun the gear wheel for several seconds and then the keyboard just dropped out of the list on the TV screen. No pairing code was ever given. I then tried it with a newer aluminum short keyboard and it immediately game me a 4-digit pairing code and completed the pairing.
As a test, I successfully paired and un-paired the older keyboard with my Mac Mini. No problems, seemed to work fine. Then tried it again with the Apple TV. No joy.

  • Can't pair iPhone 5 with Mac mini or iPad

When I try to pair my iPhone 5 with my Mac mini (current model), I'm able to go through all the steps and the Mac shows the iPhone is connected for about 1-2 secs and then drops the connection.  I'm trying to pair them so I can use the TokenLock app to automatically lock my Mac when I walk away from it.
I have the exact same issue when trying to tether my iPad to my iPhone via bluetooth to connect my iPad to the internet.  A connection is established for only a couple seconds.  I'm able to tether via wi-fi though.
    What am I doing wrong?

  • Apple Keyboards with Mac Mini

    Hi guys.
I had a Mac Mini for some time and it was my first encounter with mac system and I must say I looooooooove it!
I just bought my apple keyboard cauz before I was using a normal PC keyboard. However I think there r some buttons not working. Aren't the "apple button" supposed to do something?
Also I find on the top under finder help that the shortcut is the square button with the ? button but when I press those two, nothing happens. Any help????
And one more thing... what's with the backlight feature that I found in system preferences, does the apple keyboard have a backlight in it???
Thank you in advance and sorry for the dumb newbie questions...
    Carol

    Hi Carol,
(In addition to Rob's excellent answer)
The Apple key is well known as the Command key.
Keys equivalents are easy to remember, but the general Mac behaviour is to use the Command key where Windows usually uses Control.
    Keyboard Equivalents:
    <table border=0><tr><td>Mac OS</td><td>    </td><td>  </td><td>    </td><td>Windows</td></tr><tr><td>Control key</td><td>    </td><td>⌃</td><td>    </td><td>Ctrl key</td></tr><tr><td>Option key</td><td>    </td><td>⌥</td><td>    </td><td>Alt key</td></tr><tr><td>Command key</td><td>    </td><td>⌘</td><td>    </td><td>Windows key</td></tr></table>
Those articles too are going to help you forget Windows habits :

    Enjoy your new keyboard!

After I installed the new iOS, my bluetooth keyboard won't work.  I have tried absolutely everything - powered everything off, reset all settings, tried re-pairing, with no luck.  Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Pair Bluetooth HAs with Mac?

I am trialling ReSound Enzo 9 HAs which pair with my iPhone.
I read that many headsets and earphones can pair with a Mac.
I would have thought a hearing aid is a particular kind of headset as far as the Mac is concerned.
Is there any reason I don't seem to be able to pair the Enzos with the Mac?
    Thanks

Thanks, I expect you are right.
But HAs pair with iPhone, and iPhone pairs with Mac, so not unreasonable to expect HAs to pair with Mac.
I guess it implies that the iPhone supports different types of Bluetooth.
The only variations on Bluetooth I have heard mention of, are Bluetooth 4.0 (which is in iPhone 5 and later and needed for ReSound Smart app) and "low energy bluetooth" which I think is used for Airdrop.

  • Using Old AT Style Northgate Keyboard with Mac mini

I have just switched to Mac from Windows and I am having trouble figuring out how to use my favorite keyboard. It's a Northgate Omni Key 102 At style keyboard without a "windows" key and I don't know how to access Command, or Option with it. Is there any work around that will allow me to use this keyboard? I hope so because it is like an old friend and I would hate to have to retire it.
    Thanks!

    Hello Winston,
I'm sorry. Having been a Mac user for over ten years, but never having used a Northgate Omni thingie, I can't tell you how to make an apple/command or option key.
But I can tell you how to find out what the Mac thinks the keyboard is saying to it.
    Go to System Preferences—>International
Click on the "Character Palette" and "Keyboard Viewer" checkboxes.
At the bottom of the window, click on the "Show input menu in menu bar" checkbox.
On the menu bar you should now see a flag corresponding to your standard national keyboard (Stars & Stripes for US, Union Flag for GB, Tricolour for French and so on). Click on this, and on the menu you'll see "Show Keyboard Viewer". This gives a tiny floating palette which is an image of the keyboard. The character generated from each key is shown on the keyboard, and this changes as you press the modifier keys (command, option. control, shift and fn on laptops) singly or in combination. Look for the symbol of a square with a circle on each corner (ought to be on the bottom row next to or near the space bar. That's the Command or Apple key.
In the same way, the Option or Alt key is shown on the Keyboard Viewer as a symbol of a lower-case Y lying on its side (approximately). Similarly again, the Control key shows up as a giant circumflex accent, and so on.
    Hope this helps,
    Archie

  • Is Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 compatible with Mac mini?

Hi, I am thinking of getting a Mac mini. I currently have a Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 which I use with my HP laptop. Does anyone know if it is fully compatible with Mac mini?

It is compatible -- to a certain extent.
The Windows key will become the  (Command) key. The Mac will let you know that the keyboard you plugged in couldn't be identified, so it will ask you to type the Z key, followed by the / key. Choose ANSI and you should be ready to use the keyboard. Any multimedia keys or extra keys not part of the standard keyboard layout will have no function. The F12 key becomes the Eject key.
(PS/2 keyboards are not compatible with the Mac, unless you purchase a $15 PS/2-to-USB converter.)
