Trouble with Dell display

I have a Dell LCD display which I have connected to my Macbook with a MiniDisplay Port to DVI converter, and then a DVI cable running to the display. My computer seems to acknowledge the display, but the display reads "Cannot display this video mode, change computer display input to 1360 x 768 @ 60Hz". When I go to System Preferences > Displays > Gather Windows, I can see the settings for the Dell display. They are the correct settings, the same as above.
Is there anything I am doing wrong or need to change to get the display to work? I would not like to mirror the displays, I would like to have it as an extended desktop.
Thanks,
Collin

Ok I solved it, and I'll post how because I see this issue everywhere on the net since I've been searching and there hasn't been a working solution. The problem is with the display, not the Mac. (Should have known).
In the Dell's menu, I scrolled to Setup, DVI Settings, and changed "Source" from "Video" to "Auto"
I now see my apple's background and can use the display as an extended desktop.

  • Troubles with dell vostro 1400

recently buy a dell vostro 1400 with vista, first install ubuntu and then with internet install arch, but something strange happen with arch, the processor fan work too much, ok, runung kde s normal, but with an base install(no X,kde) the fan work at full, use cpudyn/cpufreq to control the speed but happen, with ubuntu not troubles, and even with vista the fan doesn work to much, only when see movies, but with arch even with init3 the fan enouth for me, meybe do something wrong or miss ??
    currently my installation use cpudyn.

Is your CPU overheating? I'd install lm_sensors and see how high the temperature is going. You should do this for all three (Ubuntu, Arch, Vista) if you can and compare what the temperatures are. My guess is that the arch install just has a more cautious approach to cooling. If the temperature is staying constantly above 65C then that would be the problem. Try scaling your CPU down further using cpufreq. Check that it's working by doing as root:
    cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_cur_freq
This will tell you what your current CPU speed is. If it never goes below maximum then that is the problem.

  • Programs have trouble with retina display?

I'm about to buy a MBP 15" with retina. So far I have read some posts about incorrectly displaying programs like PS elements and CS6 programs. Does Lightroom 5 also have this problem? I'm mainly buying the laptop for my photography hobby.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Some applications are not compatible with the Retina display and may look blurry, but they will work.
Photoshop CS6 and other CS6 applications are compatible with the Retina display if you are running the most recent version. Lightroom 4.3 and higher is compatible with the Retina display

  • Having trouble with Target Display (27"iMac2011)

I'm new here and hope that someone can help me.
I just bought a new MacBookPro(December 2014) 15" with Yosemite.  It has a thunderbolt port and I'm trying to connect it to my iMac27" (2011) which also has a thunderbolt port. But after hooking both up with the thunderbolt cable (from Apple) and pressing Command+F2 (from my iMac27 keyboard), nothing is happening. I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.8.) on the iMac27".  Could that be the issue?  I tried different things but still not getting it to connect.  Please help.  Thanks in advance.

    Hello Wilmocat,
Target Display Mode only requires 10.6.1 or later, so it looks like you're well within specification. Depending on your settings, you may need to use the keyboard combination Command + Fn + F2 rather than Command + F2.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.

  • Having trouble with dell printer and bonjour

    Hi,
We recently got iMac computers for our office, however we still have a windows computer we need to be able to use to print. I have the printer, a Dell 1320c, installed on my Mac, and it prints just fine.
I also have Parallels and Windows 7 installed on my Mac. I can print just fine from within Windows (Bonjour was not needed) Curiously, when I print a Windows Test Page from within Parallels, it says that the printer name is the Dell Color Laser 1320c, however, the Printer Model says: HP Color LaserJet 2800 Series PS. I have no clue where that came from, but I wonder if that may be causing a problem.
Within OS X 10.8.2, I have enabled Printer Sharing to everyone. I turned off sharing in Parallels, though that didn't make a difference.
On the Windows 7 PC, I have tried to manually add the printer with TCP/IP, but it wouldn't recognize a printer. I installed Bonjour, and was able to install the Dell printer, however, when I print, I get a bunch of pages that starts like this:
    -12345X@PJL JOB MODE=PRINTER
    @PJL SET STRINGCODESET=UTF8
    @PJL COMMENT DATE=12/26/2012
    @PJL COMMENT TIME=17:02:04
    @PJL COMMENT DNAME=Test Page
    @PJL SET JOBATTR="@LUNA...........
    and so on...
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I saw several posts about disabling bi-directional support, but that didn't work.
Does anyone have any ideas of what else I could try?? Thank you!

    Hi,
No, you can't connect direcly from your computer to your printer using network cable. It has USB connection:
        http://www.cnet.com/products/hp-color-laserjet-cp1518/specs/
I believe your Macbook Pro also hae USB port(s). Please use a cable which is similar to the follwing cable to connect them:

  • Having trouble with macbookpro display settings

Using 'best for built-in display' setting on older 15"  Macbook Pro,  and also have tried using all the scaled options as well... the problem is that now I have to scroll left/right/up/down to see all my desktop icons/menus/dock icons and the screen 'jumps' to show the remainder of the display window when I touch the mouse to any of the sides... I have tried using different settings in the view options window e.g., icon size, grid settings, etc.
Previously this was just fine until I had to restore some files from Time Machine... I even tried to restore the Display Preferences from a date that I knew was ok, all to no avail...
This is on a Macbook Pro 3,1 using OS 10.8.3... any thoughts?

  • Trouble with Dell Color 3110cn

  • Having trouble with ibook display

Just got my 15yo son a free ibook from a friend. It seemed to have the logic board problem that these systems are prone to. It would boot up to a blank screen, get lines in it etc.. and seemed to work fine with a little pressure applied.
So he has been researching this problem, and yesterday followed instructions to take off the back and use a shim, then put the back on again. This seemed to work, or well, at least it boots up every time now.
However, it goes to a screen with a folder that flashes between a question mark and a face.
It seemed to work fine before the fix. We actually didn't use it much, thinking it might not be good for it. But you could use it just fine once you got it going.
I don't have the admin password, or the start up disc. But saw that I could buy one on ebay.
Is there a way we can fix this, or is it no good? I got the ibook so my kids could learn to use a mac. We have been thinking of switching all our household computers to mac from pc, but wanted to try it out first before investing all that money.

For the costs of troubleshooting and repairing
an older computer, and getting an OS X disc
set for it (should be included with a previously
owned computer) you could consider looking
into refurbished or repaired ones with a limited
guarantee and return policy. Some of these do
not include the boot/install discs either, though.
A computer needing work is worth significantly
less than one with a good bill of health; and
all older models with few exception are not
very expensive. In fact, repaired ones are a
fairly good deal compared to the retail cost.
One of several places online to check, to see
what a fixed one can cost (varies with options)
    is http://www.wegenermedia.com/ and there are
some models worth avoiding. A good experience
with Mac OS X - especially if compared against
any other system - should be based on newer
hardware and relatively recent OS X versions.
A desktop computer can cost less than portables,
when new this is really noticable; in the Certified
Apple Store refurbished pages, you can see that
    a recent model Intel-based iMac with like-new
hardware, recent OS X version, and warranty, is
a fairly good deal. A new MacBook (white) model
from the online Apple Store, is also a great deal.
Older used hardware has various limitations.
Computers over 4 years old start needing a
few repairs or replacement parts; and they
may not be adequate for a beginner to learn
the best of any operating system. And OS X
does shine quite nicely; beyond the look of it.
Some resellers of new Apple computers may
have new/old stock of recent but not the latest
models, and at less than original retail. Be care-
ful to not go just by the price numbers; see if
the latest computer at Apple Store online is of
higher specs for the same price. I see resellers
with older inventory, asking full new prices, too.
(Not all, but some do this in other retail environs.)
The iBook G3 you have is a problematic series
and by now, even the better ones would be in
a need for repair or replacement parts. A few
out there in the world of honest refurbished old
computers may be fine, if not too costly. The
    better iBook is the G4 1.33GHz 12" or G4 1.42
GHz 14". And PowerBook G4s are often durable.
You can get a lot of computer value in a desktop
when looking at a new computer; the iMac Intel
models are superior and would be a fine start.
The least expensive MacBook (online store) new
is also a good value in computing at under $1k.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I have trouble with Firefox displaying menus and options correctly, and I keep it up to date. I have to switch to Safari to perform basic activities. What's up?

I have Firefox 37.0.1 which I just updated on my MacBook Pro running Mac OX 10.7.5. Frequently, on web sites where I'm following directions to sign in or reset a password or do a financial transaction, like a purchase, there are menus missing from my screen. At first I blame the instructions for not being complete or accurate, but lately I've been trying to switch to another browser, like Safari. And when I do the missing menus appear! What's up? Have I missed a setting in Firefox that allows menus to appear?

Hi LornaLyons, when I open Firefox's Web Console (Developer menu) and reload the page, only 4 files show a 404 status, the rest of the site seems fine. (Screen shot attached)
I did reload bypassing cached files, which is Ctrl+Shift+r on Windows but probably is Command+Shift+r on Mac. Does that make any difference for you?
Could you test the site in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
''If Firefox is not running:'' Hold down the option key when starting Firefox.
''If Firefox is running:'' You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    and OK the restart.
''Both scenarios:'' A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Refresh).
    Will the site load?

  • Update of photoshop CC - trouble with NVIDIA Quadro 1000M display driver. PS freezes

    Hey guys,
Since today I've got trouble with my PS CC.
I've updated PS CC yesterday 2014-12-12.
I was doing some drawings today and two times PS freezes during switching layers of or selecting a mask.
A message appeared that there was trouble with the display driver an PS switched off the GPU support because of that issue.
Ok, I thought let's update the display driver and so I've done today. I switched to actual NVIDIA display driver version 314.21
I'm working with an NVIDIA Quadro 1000M on a DELL mobile Workstation Precision M4600 with 8 GB RAM.
Now when I start up PS and press alt+k, my 2 displays showing a black screen for 1-2 seconds.
After closing the general setup window again black screen for 1-2 sec and the top menu bar is showing no entries.
When I move the mouse pointer over the bar, the menus appear again. But the bar is like transparent at the parts where no menues are.
When I unlock the window from the screen an put it back fitting to the screen everything looks like normal.
Till today I hadn't any problem with my notebook in that kind of way.
Maybe someone has or had similar problems.
Would be nice if someone can help me.
    thanks

Oh, that sounds very bad. It's not that bad for me. It's not crashing that often at the moment, only black screens at start up or if setting dialog is opened. But I will see tomorrow how often it will crash, during today it crashed 2 times when doing some ridiculous simple actions like switchid to another layer  and the other time when trying to edit an mask layer. I will contact the support chat on monday regarding this issue. Maybe there is a solution or an update soon... I keep may fingers crossed for you.

  • MSI Lighning 7970 card 2560x1440 problem (with DELL U2711)

Hello. I have trouble with my display and 2xMSI 7970 Lighning graphic cards. Could someone help me?
    Configuration:
Core i7 2600K running on gigabyte P8Z68-V motherboard with J.3603 BIOS
2 MSI Lighning 7970 cards without crossfire connector inserted (I don’t need crossfire for gaming – just multimonitor configuration for graphics).
The BIOSes of the cads are the same-from-the-box and was identified like MSI.HD7970.3072.120411.rom in the GPU-Z database.
The numbers in the GPU-Z’s “BIOS Version” is 015.013.000.010.000000 (113-AD40900-X01)
The BIOS numbers in the MSI Live Update  is TV278MS.102
And the serial numbers from the stickers of the card’s boxes are:
    602-V278-02SB1204058976 and 602-V278-02SB1205129844
All stuff running on Win8.1x64 system.
I have 3 displays: 2 of them are Samsung 245T running 1920x1200 and the last one (the new one) is DELL U2711 (witch is capable for running 2560x1440 resolution).
    Now, THE PROBLEM.
When I running 2-displays configuration (2xSamsung 245T connected via DVI) there are no any problems at all: all works fine. The problem with the 3d display and it’s 2560x1440 resolution. I tried different cables and both cards, but display couldn’t run correctly.
    1)   It is running fine but ONLY 1920x1080 resolution when connected via DVI. There is no 2560x1440 settings at all in windows system then. I tried both cards and both DVI-ports, also I tried different DVI cables. No matter. It’s only 1920x1080. The drivers for the display panel was installed from the dell’s official site and the’re latest (as I could see..)
    2)   When I tried to connect the display via DisplayPort cable to my cards (no matter which of them or which of 4 display port’s connector on each card) it COULD RUN AT ALL. Usually the display showing up correctly with the right resolution (2560) but the screen is blank (black). After some time monitor goes to the suspend mode.
From time to time display could shows some desktop with terrible quality (I get the photos of it) for 2-3 second and then it’s blank again.
Also when connected I get the error “DisplayPort Lower setting applied” from time to time.
    3) I have tried some DVI-Displayport adapters (witch was in the box with the MSI cards) and the result is the same as in 1) - only 1920x1080 resolution...
The display is fine and it works perfectly on another system (without MSI cards). What’s the problem? Should I upgrade BIOS or something to work in 2560x1440? Thank you.

the poor quality of the screen (when it shows up for 1-3 seconds with DisplayPort connection)

  • Trouble with 30" HD Cinema Display using Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter

I bought a new MacBook Pro and I am having trouble getting the full resolution to work with my 30" HD Cinema Display (purchased in 2007 max resolution 2560 x 1600) using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter.
According to the specs page, http://support.apple.com/kb/SP581 , the max resolution of the HD external display is supported. Unfortunately the max that I can set it to is: 1280 x 800
Has anyone else had the same issue?
If this isn't resolved I'm likely going to exchange my MacBook Pro for one that can support this display.

So I went and bought the Mini DisplayPort To Dual-Link DVI Adapter as suggested and it seems to work great.
Now the problem that I have is when I open up Apple's DVD player, the screen is blank but I can still hear audio.
If I unplug the display, the movie will display properly. Rebooting with the display plugged in doesn't help either. I also deleted all the DVD players enc setting files so that they would re-initialize but no luck.
Any idea what this problem might be??

  • How do I get 2560x1600 with a 30" Dell display in Bootcamp on the Retina MBP

I had a MBA 11" that recognized the 30" Dell 3007WFP display at its native resolution.
To get it to work in Mountain Lion I used the "hold option when scaling" trick. Success.
    Bootcamp though isn't working.
Since getting Retina MBP and Mountain Lion Bootcamp NVIDIA graphic drivers installed, I can play games on the Retina at 2880x1800 fine, and the external only works at 1280x800. It shows that it can go up to 2560x1600 but it doesn't actually work.
Is there something wrong with Apple's adapter for Thunderbolt to DVI-D Dual Link and the new drivers or the MBP Retina's Thunderbolt port?  The display is only receiving Single Link instead of Dual Link, limiting the resolution to 1280x800 instead of 2560x1600.

    hi guys
before I bought Retina, I did a little research on the internet...
I remember reading that for the time being, you cannot use retina MBP with other displays at max or higher resolution under bootcamp...
I read that the driver for this retina mbp video card was Apple Mac OsX specific or something like that.
Therefore, no support under other than Mac osx environment yet...
I don't know if I made myself clear...
you can do a little research on the internet and you'll easily find articles talking about this issue...

  • HELP!!??? Trouble with PS CS-6 displaying/ producing grainy and pixelated images after being imported using PS Bridge and Camera-Raw 8.5

Help!??? I am having trouble with PS CS-6 displaying/ producing/ saving grainy pictures when import NEF files!!!
    Hi all,
When I import all NEF or RAW files into CS6 from Bridge and Camera Raw from the Nikon D200 and D5000, they become grainy/ pixelated.  However, RAW files from the D800 did not have problem. I set the Color Space in my Nikons to AdobeRGB, in PS Camera Raw 8.5 to AdobeRGB, in PS CS-6 ColorSpace to AdobeRGB, and Save As Jpeg with Max quality (12). When comparing between CS-6 produced file and the original, I can see a big drop in quality and the picture become grainy and pixelated. What can I do to make this right? Any help/ suggestion is appreciated.
    Thank you!
    HN

Can you show us a screen-shot of the raw in Camera Raw that shows this noise, or if you only see it in the saved JPG, then show us a side-by-side of the raw in Camera Raw and the JPG?  Show the same area of the photo and zoom to 100%.
It is normal for raw photos to have grain but you can mostly remove it with the Luminance Noise-Reduction sliders in the Detail tab of Camera Raw.
The amount of grain depends on the ISO sensitivity setting on the camera.
