Trouble with RED footage

I've been hired to do a re-edit on a short film shot on the RED.  I have FCP7.  The video which had already been rendered plays fine on the timeline.  But I can't get the clips to play on the Viewer.  The audio plays, but for the video all I get is a white screen.  (see attached screenshot image).
Also, when I try to render footage, I get a message saying, 'Codec not found.  You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card.'  (see screenshot image).  I can play other video just fine.  What am I missing?  Thanks.

I get this message when I tried to open the movie file:
But yet it plays on the fcp timeline.

  • After Effects CC Render Errors with RED footage and ProRes 4444 proxies

Working on an 8 Core, 2008 Mac Pro with 16GB of RAM running Mountain Lion.
I just upgraded to After Effects CC and I'm having a whole bunch of errors ...
-- the 'MooV' file is damaged or unsupported
    -- error getting package info for file "..." ( 3 :: 164 )
    -- Error (4) reading frame from file "..." ( 86 :: 2 )
I'm trying to make ProRes 4444 proxies from RED files (sometimes as big as 4K), which will eventually end up in a 1920x1080 project. I'll make a 4444 proxy, work on it all day with no problems, then when I try to render (or save a RAM preview) any one of the previous errors will show up.
My projects seemed to work just fine fine in AE CS6, and I've worked with RED footage in AE before with little issue. I've completly restarted my system, re-installed everything, worked off an external drive, worked on my internal (software) RAID, rendered to local and external hard drives, adjusted my multiprocesser render settings (on and off), cleared the cache ... nothing is fixing it.
Does anybody else have any ideas? Or insight. Or anything?!
    Thanks for your time,
    Eliot

I'm working on a MacbookPro, Early 2013, OS X 10.8.4, and I'm having the same exact error:
However instead of using RED footage, I'm using a 3rd party plugin called Element 3D and Optical Flares from VideoCopilet.net.
I'm not sure if the bug is related, I'm just wondering if anyone else has any idea on how to fix this problem. I have a fresh install of CC so I can't downgrade to CS6.
Another error popped up during multiple trys in export:
In case the old file was actually corrupted, I checked all my backups that worked perfectly fine with CS6 in the past, and I get the same error when I copy them over to my hard drive on my mac.
    My current setup is:
Processor: 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 16GB
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
I really don't want to recreate this entire file from scratch. That would be a lot of hours wasted... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Since Prelude doesn't work with Red footage, how can I add logging info to a file in Premiere Pro

Since Prelude doesn't work with Red footage, how can I add logging info to a file in Premiere Pro CS6?

RED footage has a restriction on metadata.  We are looking into what it would take to get full metadata support into our system, but you cannot tag red footage at this time.

  • Trouble with RED Log and Transfer in FCP6

    Hi there,
I am cutting my first RED feature and am having an issue getting all my footage into FCP 6. I decided to go with the RED Quicktime files and am Log and transferring them in as we speak. Most of the footage was able to be dropped right in with no problem what so ever but I am on the last 1TB hard drive and it won't mount the folders to transfer the footage except one. One folder when in fine but the rest won't even mount. I tried importing each .RDC folder in on its own but I get an error:
    WARNING
"A008c001_0212LV001.R3D" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.
Obviously these files are put together the same way as the other couple hundred files but these ones are giving me trouble. Has anyone else ran into this problem and how do I get the footage in.
By the way I can open the .R3D files in Red alert without any problem
    Thanks,
    ~Jake

A while has passed, unfortunately. I've been working my way through this mess, as well.
When you get the "unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure" message it usually indicates that a catalog-like file is missing. The same now happens with P2 transfer.
Check for an ".rsx" file within the RDC folder. Log and Transfer may not be happy if this file is missing. Sometimes it gets missed when the media is being consolidated across drives.
** What I'm having trouble with now is that Log and Transfer repeatedly fails to load a selected directory --- except on the umpteenth attempt. You know, the one where I'm beyond the point that most normal people are up the Bell Tower sniping at the citizenry.

  • Premiere CS6 - keyframed scaling is not working with RED footage when Time Remapping is used

    Hello,
My system is: Win7, Premiere CS6 (6.0.5), 12GB RAM, etc...
My project settings:  I'm using 1080p RED timeline.
    Steps:
Using 4K RED footage with "Scale to frame size" disabled after placing the clip on timeline.
Under effects time remapping is set to 50%.
Motion->Scale is keyframed from 50% to 100% to achieve zoom in effect while preserving image quality.
Clip stays at 50% Scale ignoring the keyframes.
Problem is present during preview and in the exported file. I tried with CUDA enabled and disabled and problem persists.
If I turn off Time Remapping, then the clip responds to scaling keyframes.
Is there any workouround or can this bug be fixed?
    Thanks!

    Thanks.
This seems to work but I had to apply TR to the nested sequence and scaling to the original clip.
Otherwise scaling operations are messed up.
This situation reminds me of after effects and effects processing order.

  • How to sync audio tracks with RED footage that has no reference audio?

So I shot a short film for my thesis project and the damn crew didn't record reference audio. We shot on a RED camera and had a sound guy with a shotgun mic. So we have crystal clear audio tracks from a separate sound card and tons of RED footage with abosolutely no sound.
Lucky we did use a slate, so I know I have to go one by one and manually sync all the audio with the right video tracks. Though I am unsure how exactly to do it. Once synced, will I have to edit from the timeline? How can I reimport the synced footage into a new project so I can edit from my media bin?

    Hi PrimeSequence,

  • Problem with red footage import

I cannot import red footage  in premiere pro cs4: error message "file grayed or damaged" Do you know why ?

After quitting CC (I'm not a subscriber kind of user, that's all), I went back to my master suite Cs6.
I did one mistake, updating to the current version. A sign of my problem was that Ae Cs6 didn't worked either (in terms of RED files).
(FCPX and RED Cine X etc worked fine, so I excluded a problem on my system)
The only solution that I found was working was: After I rolled back to Pr Cs6 6.0.2 (I do no updates druing productions, so one MAC was on 6.0.2, I just copied it)
It didn't worked with 6.0.0 nor with any other than the one named above.
The ImporterRedserver.app was 6.0.0 and the Importerred.bundle was the only one in history named ImporterRED 3.38.08 PM.bundle, which was version 6.0.1
Of course that will not work with Dragon. I tested Scarlet and Epic files from the past two years. They open fine.
The problem is, if one mixes the versions (e.g., newest RED Cine X and the Photoshop plug in, the stored information in the .RMD file might shift the color: compare Ps RED plug in v6 and v7, with an RMD setting done in RED Cine X. There is a huge shift in blue)
So, all in all, I hope Adobe delivers a new "bundle" and "app" for Dragon and Pr CS v6.0.x

  • Trouble with Red Camera project

    Hello again ...
I am trying to edit a project with some very nice Red footage.  Resolution of the Red RAW footage is 4,096 x 2,304.  The project is a medium complex project, I would say.  It has the raw footage, shot on greenscreen, with the following effects and layers:
    1. Talent was masked, keyed and color corrected in PPro.  I tried to export to AE using a Dynamic link but that was a quick fail.  It got hopelessly confused and wouldn't work correctly (it would crash, convert all clips to the first clip, etc.).  I love Dynamic Link and use it all the time with our Panasonic 170 footage, but the large size of the Red files seems to cause problems.
So, we got really good at keying in PPro.
    2. We then used that sequence as a track in a second sequence, where we dropped in the background and a reflection layer.  We also did light wrap using Digieffects Delerium 2 plugin.
Here is a screen capture of a sample frame:
Before I describe the current problem, let me describe my computer:
    Intel Core i7 950 @ 3.07 Ghz
    24GB RAM
    Windows 7 64
System drive is a 4GB SATA drive (not RAID)
Project drive is a 8 x 2 TB SATA tower.  RAID 10.  Sustained data rate is roughly 225MB/second
    NVidia GTX 285 4GB ram
    We are running MPE successfully
SO ... what is our problem?
    1. Very slow timeline editing.  How slow?  Well, I have been editing on PCs for 15 years and this is as slow as I have ever seen.  If you click to a different part of the timeline it just sits.  Half the time it doesn't change the display.  Sometimes it does.
    2. Dynamic link doesn't work (see above).
    3. Previews take roughly 1 hour per 15 seconds of timeline to render.  The project is 2 minutes, so that means it takes 8 hours to render previews.  At 1/2 quality.  Yikes!
    4. It will not render in Media Encoder.  It crashes after about 6 to 8 minutes.
What am I doing wrong?  Is this a known problem?  Is this just too much to ask of PPro?  Should I first have a professional house transcode the Red RAW down to 1080P?
    Thanks!

I'll agree with Jim on this... my system is identical to his, except that I've got a GTX285 instead of the 470 for graphics. I can edit 4K (and even 4.5K) RED RAW files smooth as butter on my system. I do have to keep my playback resolution down at 1/2-1/4 to get smooth playback, but it is definitely smooth at that. I'm not using any of the real big fancy third-party plugins, but I have done a good bit with multiple layers of the three-way CC, Levels, and much more... And I've got several tracks of video with interviews, b-roll, etc, so rather complex timelines. I experience no issues at all with working with RED RAW footage, so I can vouch for the fact that it's not Premiere... sounds like something specific to your system or your workflow.
I would agree with the advice given above to key in AE first and then bring it in to PrPro that way. Sounds to me also like you might have a memory issue--are you running other programs along with PrPro when doing this? Perhaps have a bad stick of RAM in there somewhere?

  • Trouble with P2 Footage QT Exports

    Hi,
My P2 footage looks fine in the timeline but when I export QT's (w/ "current settings" marked) the aspect ratio changes and they look squished. The QT info pane states that the video is in fact 1080, matching the clip info and sequence settings. I don't understand what's happening.
One note: I thought the DP was going to shoot 720, so one thing I'm wondering is if I somehow made a mistake when I brought in the footage, as it was the first time I had logged and transferred P2 footage (I'm used to working with XDCam EX footage where I've never had a problem like this).
Can anyone help me troubleshoot this?
    Thank you in advance.
    -Cherry

Thank you for the advice but I don't see any settings to change in the QTPlayer 10, and now the same thing has happened to my client who of course also defaults to QTPlayer 10, but thankfully she has QT7 Player as a back-up, which plays the P2 footage Quicktime correct 16x9 aspect ratio.
I've seen several references online to this problem with P2 footage - but no solution other than to use another media player. Apparently the 16x9 embedded flag/value is somehow lost during QT export with P2 footage. When this happens, the file is assumed to be in a 4:3 aspect ratio. I've poured through the settings in FCP and don't see anything that I could change to help this.
Just wondering if anyone knows of a fix - either in QT or in FCP!
    Thanks in advance!

  • Problem With RED Footage

    Hi all,
I'm working on a Final Cut Pro project that uses RED footage. I sent the project to Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project for sound editing, but when the project opens in Soundtrack Pro, the audio tracks are blank. Is there a workaround to this? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    E. Rocka

    NLEdit,
Thanks for your response, however, that still produced the same result. The audio tracks are appearing in Soundtrack Pro, however, there are absolutely no waveforms. This hasn't happened to me on any other projects, so I'm assuming it's because it is RED footage. Any thoughts?

  • XML import proxy issue with RED footage

    Hey folks,
So my editor cut a scene on her computer, and I want to edit it on mine. We shot RED (Scarlett), and she was using proxy files. When I imported and opened her fcxXML, I was able to relink the audio files, but the proxy footage just looks black (see photo).
I have no idea how to re-link it when the program doesn't seem to know how to deal with it. I have installed the RED plugin already, and went ahead and imported all the RED files and am making their proxys now.
    Thanks so much!
    -Kirby

Do you have the same files as the other editor, original media as well as proxy files? What happens if you switch to original/optimized? Still offline?  What happens if you relink the original media?

  • Trouble importing RED footage

Hi there, I'm really hoping someone might be able to help me - I'm cutting a project shot on a RED scarlett (dragon censor) in Premiere CS6, but I'm having issues opening the files...
each time I try importing or even opening the footage I get an error message: 'unsupported format or damaged file'. I read a few threads that said it might be an issue with Yosemite?
I know the files aren't damaged because when I picked the footage up from my DP he was watching the clips back on his Premiere pro.
The files open perfectly in RED cineX Pro, but won't export - I get the error message 'RCX does not support Intel devices for Open CL'
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Brett

attempted import of your file using cs6.0.5
up to and including red epic   -   no problem,
but i have never been able to import any red dragon media into cs6,
resorting to flipping it to something else using redcine-x

  • Trouble with R3D footage.

Hello, I'm tying to import R3D footage into Premiere CS6 on Mac but keep getting the preview in source monitor error message. I've downloaded the RedPreview for CS6 on Mac but it's a 'bundle' and I've got no idea how to actually apply that to Premiere. Any thoughts? I desperately need to get this footage working in Premiere.

  • Having trouble with Red minus signs on folders shared to my computer

Here's the situation as best as I can describe it.
We are working on 2 imacs.  iMac A as a 1TB harddrive attached to it via USB that has all the folders on it that we use to work.  iMac B is connected to A wirelessly and can "usually" access the contents of the harddrive through A with no problems.  However, every once in a while I click a folder on the harddrive and I get access (I'm on iMac B) to that folder but the subfolder inside that I need to access (the others are fine) has a red minus sign on it which is infuriating.  So far the only way we've been able to re-grant access to the folder for me is to either restart my computer or unplug and replug the harddrive into iMac A.
    Steps we have taken:
Added full "read & write" permissions to both computers and users on both the folder, the sub folder, and the harddrive itself
Attempted to set up additional users to access the folder differently
Checked and unchecked "ignore ownership" on all of the above access points
We find it strange that it's only sometimes I get locked out of the folder and other times I'm not.  It has to be some sort of glitch unless there's some sort of setting that locks me out if I make too many changes to the contents in that specific folder.  Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

The procedure below will reset the permissions of a home folder in OS X 10.7.4 or later. If you're running an earlier version of 10.7, update to the latest version first. This procedure should not be used in OS X versions older than 10.7.4.
Back up all data before you begin.
    Step 1
Click the Finder icon in the Dock. A Finder window will open.
    Step 2
Press the following key combinations, in the order given:
    Command-3
    Shift-command-H
    Command-I
The Info window of your home folder will open.
    Step 3
Click the lock icon in the lower right corner and authenticate with the name and login password of an administrator on the system. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Step 4
In the Sharing & Permissions section of the window, verify that you have "Read & Write" privileges. If not, use the "+" and "-" buttons in the lower left corner to make the necessary changes.
    Step 5
By default, the groups "staff" and "everyone" have "Read Only" privileges. With those settings, the files at the top level of your home folder will be readable by other local users. You can change the privileges to "No Access" if you wish, but then your Public and Drop Box folders will be inaccessible to others, and Personal Web Sharing won't work. Most likely, you don't need to change these settings.
    Step 6
If there are entries in the Sharing & Permissions list for users or groups besides "me," "staff," and "everyone," delete them.
    Step 7
Click the gear icon at the bottom of the Info window and select Apply to enclosed items... from the drop-down menu. Confirm. The operation may take several minutes to complete. When it does, close the Info window.

  • Glitchy and extremely poor performance with Red footage in AE on 16 core machine

    Hello,
I have set up a new Windows 7 workstation for AE CS6 based on:
    - ASUS Z9PE-D8 WS with dual Xeons,
    - 64Gb. of RAM
    - Nvidia Quadro K5000 (also tried my older Quadro 4000 with no difference in results)
    - Nvidia GTX 680 (mainly for DaVinci)
    - BMD DeckLink SDI
    - AE 11.0.2.12 with the latest updates.
    - The source footage is sitting on two SSD drives that are raided together.
The problem is that it is exceptionally slow and glitchy when loading Redcode to the viewer and into Neat Video.  Whenever I try to load a clip or reposition the cursor, the UI locks and starts flickering - meaning the entire AE UI starts disappearing and reappearing really quickly, so you can see whatever is on the desktop behind appear and disappear.  The AE icon in the taskbar also starts flickering. if I click anywhere on the taskbar, AE stops the flickering for a while, though generally after a bit it starts again, until it's finally done rendering the frame and everything goes back to normal.  It does better if I set it to 1/4 resolution of course, but that's not particularly useful since I need to be able to feed a full definition frame to Neat Video to set the parameters.  Occasionally it actually fails to render the frame and then Neat Video complains.
This is extremely problematic because this was supposed to be an upgrade from my preexisting quad core i7 machine with 16Gb. with HDDs instead of SSDs.  Running the same version of AE, that machine works properly and actually vastly outperforms this much more powerful workstation when getting the previews ready from 4K Redcode, so something is clearly not working out on this new installation.
I have spent a significant amount of time investigating the issue, but I'm not getting anywhere.  Some of the things I tried:
    - Updated BIOS and all display drivers
    - Trashed preferences
    - Disconnected everything except the disk drives, Quadro and the RME RayDAT audio interface, made a new Windows 7 installation with just Adobe Master Collection and the audio drivers - no extra AE plugins or other drivers.  Same behavior, even after disconnecting the RME.
    - Tried the latest redimporter from Adobe Labs, made no difference.
    - Enabled and disabled multiprocessing
There is a single post from about 2008 in the forum where someone described the same UI flickering.  In that case, Logictech SetPoint turned out to be the app that was interfering, but I don't have it installed.  Right now it seems like there is something else that's interfering with the redimporter, or else there is a problem running this on the ASUS Z9PE-D8 WS, which I find hard to believe because from the forums it seems like there are a number of people who have also bought this motherboard for an AE platform.
If anyone has good ideas about what might be going on with this problem, or can validate that they have been able to get a good Z9PE-D8 installation running AE to process Redcode, please advise while I keep trying.
Best regards, and thank you in advance.

The workstation has a 1000W PSU and only the Quadro is taxed since it's the main display interface.  The GTX680, I believe, is completely idle while AE loads a Redcode frame.  According to my calculations, the power consumption should top out at about 850W if the system were really loaded down, which it isn't in this case.   I nevertheless tried removing the 680 from the system and it didn't help.
I should restate that it's not the whole screen that flickers - it's the AE user interface.  The rest of the desktop is just fine, and in fact if I want I can operate the browser or other apps without a problem even as AE is choking.  It's AE that's having a hard time.
The drivers are all the latest from Nvidia, as I stated originally - one install for the Quadro and one for the GTX.  I disabled all the stereo vision Nvidia services in service manager.
