Troubleshoot strange OSPF instability

This one's got me stumped. some of our core L3 routers will just up lose their neighbors. I'm logging adjaceny changes and they just go to a DOWN state and then quickly (sometimes 2 seconds, sometimes a minutes) going through the neighbor stages (init, 2-way, etc)
I've checked layer2 counters and spanning-tree and they look OK. It's happening on all 5 of our core campus routers (6500s with L3 engines).
what is even stranger is sometimes the 6500s will lose their 7200 WAN router neighbor as well. There isn't really a pattern.
Can this be processor? OSPF has too many DB entires for an area?
Thanks in advanced. I was tempted to turn on SPF debugging.
Logg messages from one ospf router. Notice going directly from FULL to INIT.

Well its still happening. This time I've captured the problem with "debup ip ospf adjacency".
What is concerning is some of these messages. Bad sequence number and neighbor going from full to exchstart. I still can't see any underlying layer1/2 problems.

• Dual L1950s on HP dock wont wake up

Hello All,
I am having an issue here that I have not been able to resolved.
I work as a Desktop support tech at my company, We recently upgraded all the laptop users in our enviroment from 1 HP L1950 to 2 1950s. Now that our laptop users are connected to the new monitors I am seeing multiple reports from different users with different model HP laptops. When the user is away from their desk long enough for the display to go to sleep, they are unable to power the monitor back on when they return. The power light shows amber and you cannot power it off like you normally would. The monitor becomes unresponsive and I have pull the power cable before the monitor will power off.  Once ive pulled the power cable the monitor powers off and I can turn it back on like normal but the problem will re surface as soon as the user is away for their desk.
Occionally I will also see the monitor power back on to the point where I see the curson but the background remains black. The mouse cursor can move freely across both screens but the machine has to be rebooted regardless.
More or less im kinda at a loss here. I have spent many more hours troubleshooting strange monitor issues that normally take me all of 60 seconds to resolve.  Also this is only occuring on laptops with docking stations, All of which are HP.
Has anyone else come across an issue like this? And before you ask, I have reinstalled the most current video drivers. I have checked all the display settings in windows. I have reset the monitors to factory. I have done all the normal troubleshooting one in my position should do. Now I come to you for help.

• General instability: how to troubleshoot and fix?

I've noticed increasing instability on my iMac. Most applications work fine, but when I shut down, often many applications will refuse to--and I'm prompted to "force quit" them, one by one. This happens with Word, Seesmic, iTunes, Address book, browsers--across the board.
Word seems to be the most unstable. It actually works fine, for the most part, but even during ordinary use I will often get the message that the application is not responding when I click on the icon. Usually I can use drop-down menus to keep on working--creating new files, and so on. But still it must be force-quit at the end.
Often when I have a number of windows open, the system will take a long time to respond to requests, delaying a "close window" command by 30 seconds, for example (with spinning ball).
I've repaired permissions, including booting from the OS X disk. I've also run repairs using diskwarrior, and inspected the hardware.
How can I troubleshoot and fix this cross-application instability?

Use SuperDuper along with what you do now.
Add a Test user account on new clone of your system.
It does sound like corrupt prefs and cache files though as well as the chance of still having a directory or bad sectors.
I am a strong proponent of the SuperDuper plus Disk Warrior for system maintenance.
As for Word/Office, possible but I'll leave that to others.
And of course if you could really have two internal drives, system alone and 2nd for data or full user account so much the better. Newer iMacs can have an SSD and MacSales will add SATA or eSATA controller now ($169, in house) for iMacs.
But if you have FW800 that could do the trick perhaps.

• Strange Reassociation behaviour - help on troubleshoot

Hi there,
I have a production wlc wich has several ssid's working.
In a particular ssid, the wifi clients are bar code readers, using a wpa psk encription/authentication.
My client had bought a new bar code readers, and since then, we are having problems.
I had capture a debug client <mac> and attached here.
I cant find a reason for so much reassociation requests... even for the same AP.
Please give a light in here please.
My Best Regards,
Petrónio

Thank You leolaohoo,
I'll try it asap.

• MSI Neo2 Platinum (Winchester3200) - strange instability issue in Windows

My specs:
Winchester 3200 CPU
MSI Neo2 Platinum 1.4 bios
2 x 512 Kingston PC4000 3-3-3-8-1
Gainward 5900Xt GS
Seagate 160Gb SATA on SATA port 3
The problem seems quite odd to me, so I decided to post here. Generally, the PC is stable, passes more than an hour of Prime95, 3d marks run fine etc.. but in Windows (XP Sp1) I'm getting this annoying issue: when I let the system run idle for a while, with none or some windows open but no programs active, my computer literally freezes. I can move the mouse, but i can't open any windows or click any buttons. Still, the keyboard is responding so I hit ALT + CTRL + DEL and get the Windows Security window. There I click on the Task Manager and all i get is an empty desktop, with the wallpaper but no icons or any activity whatsoever.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Nope.. And I hardly believe it's a software issue. Will try a fresh install of XP today, nut the reason of such strange behaviour escapes me :] Cmon people, any ideas ?
If you problem isn't related to software, then the only other thing that comes to mind is that overclocking is the culprit.  I'm not overclocking anything (except my 3d card, and that only slightly) and have no such problems with my K8N Neo2.  You describe a strange problem, certainly, and in my own experience such behaviors--system runs great in some normal situtations but in others it doesn't--have always been related to overclocking of some kind.  If you aren't overclocking anything then it's probably software induced.  Good luck!

• Z77A-G45 System Instability

Motherboard: MSI Z77A-G45 (BIOS Version E7752IMS V2.4 - I did not update the BIOS, it shipped this way)
CPU: Intel Core i7-2700K Sandy Bridge
PSU: CORSAIR HX850 850W
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Model F3-12800CL9Q-16GBXL
Case: Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower
HDD: 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX  (SATA Port 2)
Optical: ASUS 24X DVD Burner DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS  (SATA Port 3)
GPU: EVGA 012-P3-1570-AR GeForce GTX 570 (Fermi) 1280MB 320-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Main Problem: System Instability.  I've managed to get the OS installed, and was able to eventually get VirusScan, Windows Updates, Chipset drivers, and other drivers installed.  However, this was a painful process, with several BSOD's, program crashes, and other lock-ups.  After doing so, the system is still unstable.
I also have an SSD I intend to use for acceleration via Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST).  I plan to eventually plug this into SATA Port 1.  But I didn't get that far...
I am not OC'ing - using Standard Mode.  The only change I made in the BIOS was to switch the SATA Mode to "RAID Mode".  I did this prior to OS installation, per instructions.  And during OS install, I loaded the Intel SATA controller, per instructions.
OS install was unusually rocky.  First attempt failed.  Second attempt worked, but took longer than it should have.  After installation... crashing, instability, and BSODs.
Checked Memory a couple times, via Microsoft's memory checking tools.  Also reseated all DIMMs, to no avail.
After some amount of troubleshooting, I saw that my memory was being reported as: F3-12800CL9-4GBXL DIMMs.  I assume this is correct, and that the "Model" I bought (F3-12800CL9Q-16GBXL) just describes the whole package of 4 DIMMs.  However, the one thing that is incorrect is that the timing is reported in the BIOS as 11-11-11-28.  The timing specs on my RAM are 9-9-9-24.  Overriding this in the BIOS to those numbers (for TCL, tRCD, tRP, tRAS) did not make any difference.  Instability continued.  The memory speed and voltage seems to have been set properly to 1600/1.5V.
The other thing to note here is that I just bought the MSI Z77A-G45 to replace an ASUS P8Z68 DELUXE/GEN3, which was experiencing the same (but less frequent) instability.  I've been using it for a couple months, and decided to try my luck with a different motherboard.  Only this one is worse.  The only components that were reused were the CPU and RAM (and optical drive, PSU, and Case, if that matters), and the only other thing in common was that I had both set up in RAID Mode.
Thoughts on how I should proceed?
Thanks in advance,
-Todd

Regarding the memory speed, I'm confused.  The maufacturer site (gskill.com/products.php?index=349) says:
CAS Latency   9-9-9-24-2N
Speed   DDR3-1600 (PC3 12800)
Also just to confirm, to change the timing, I assume I change this in the BIOS, under DRAM Timing Mode, switch to "Link" (from "Auto"), correct?  And when I do this, it enables the "Advanced DRAM Configuration" section.  If I double-click that, I can specify 9-9-9-24 (for tCL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS).  Former values were 11-11-11-28.  I assume I leave all other fields at "Auto"?  What is the "-2N" in the CAS Latency description on the GSkill site?
Here is the reason:
They are real DDR3-1600, but that means CAS = 11 @ 1.5V
Their XMP profile is buggy (in fact that's the DDR3-1333 profile).
For 1600MHz with CAS = 9, they need 1.60-1.65V

• OSPF with ipsec VTI interface goes down before dead timer.

I have a strange issue that OSPF will initially start working, hellos are exchanged both ways but then after about 3 – 6 hellos one of the sides stops getting them and the ipsec VTI tunnel drops on router A even before the dead timer reaches 0. Is this default behavior, when OSPF is over a VTI interface if it doesn’t receive hellos is drops the tunnel?
I’m at a loss as to what is going on since it looks like only one neighbor stops receiving hellos, router A, for a brief period of time. This VTI tunnel is going over another provider’s FW and they have assured me the tunnel destination/source ips are wide open they also sent me the ACL and I can verify this. The weird thing is if I enable EIGRP it works great with no issues. On router B I am using the same source/ip unnumbered  interface on multiple VTI tunnels to to other destinations but this shouldn’t cause any issues I don’t think. I have never had an issue like this and from what I can tell the router A just stops briefly getting hellos after 3 – 6 initial hellos and drops the protocol on the VTI interface. If I set the dead timer on router A long enough it will stop receiving hellos but stay up and then after a while you get “LOADING to FULL” as the hellos start coming in again.  Again the tunnel goes over a cisco 800 which I have no control over it and a potential FW before that but I saw the ACL and ip is being allowed. I was thinking this could be a trolling issue on the FW but it doesn’t explain why EIGRP works.  FYI I was having a recursive routing issue before but I have since fixed that and the issue still continues.
********  it turns out that i was using the same source ip on multiple tunnels. IPsec would get confused with packets coming in and would deliver packets to the wrong tunnel interface. This was solved but using the key command with a different key number on each set of tunnels with the shared profile command
"If more than one mGRE tunnel is configured on a router that use the same tunnel source address, the shared keyword must be added to the tunnel protection command on all such tunnel interfaces. Each mGRE tunnel interface still requires a unique tunnel key, NHRP network-ID, and IP subnet address. This is common on a branch router when a dual DMVPN cloud topology is deployed. "

I haven't studied your config, but I can tell you I have production environment using OSPF across VTI  (and GRE, and GRE/IPSec and DMVPN) tunnels without issue.  I.e. so OSPF can be okay with VTI tunnels.

• TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS RE: iCLOUD MAIL SERVER DROPOUT

Here's what I learned throughout this and I will post a discussion in a separate thread for the rest of the folk out there.
MYTHS AND FACTS RE: iCLOUD MAIL SERVER DROPOUT- WHAT I'VE LEARNED
Hopefully this troubleshooting helps everyone that has had or having issues, for now and for the future...
Firstly, the Apple system status is a bit of a myth. Because it is a global community of people using iCloud, it does not always update in real time. The Apple techs check this when there is issues, as do the public, so odds are unless every single person is having issues around the globe, then it won't reflect an issue. http://www.apple.com/au/support/systemstatus/
Apple technicians work in territories. For example, I live in Australia so I had to deal with a tech supervisor who looks after Australasia and who is based in Singapore. They don't get a notification if a group of people in Canada are having problems, even if they are identical to mine, unless as above, the whole world is having issues.
CHECK THESE FORUMS as a first step measure to work out if the problem seems to be just you and your account, or a wider community. Particularly before you make any major change to your email accounts, passwords, computers or phones.
If you get an issue in the next week or so (and keep in mind for the future) Error Message: "MY NAME" returned the error "[AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] Authentication failed." Your username/password or security settings may be incorrect. Would you like to try re-entering your password?" and this happens multiple times when you know the password is correct, then odds are that the server is down and you are best to wait it out. Try checking your mail via iCloud to test. If you can send it through there, odds are that the glitch has nothing to do with your password or issues with your account and rather than make changes, try and wait it out.
If all of your folders in your email disappear, if they are IMAP folders, then log into iCloud mail in your web browser to check that they are still there. It just means that your mail client (Mac Mail, Outlook for Mac etc) can't access the IMAP folders via the server. Don't panic until they are gone from every device you use your email on.
Be wary of deleting ANYTHING from your computer unless you are backing it up first. For example, I had a tech guy on the first day of the server drop out, who gave me the wrong advice of deleting EVERYTHING from my keychain. This resulted in me having massive security issues for web browsers and thus, I couldn't log into my iCloud mail in my browser. Not only did I have to re-install my OS Maverick to fix it (which took 10 hours) but I could have muddled through this mess by continuing to work using web mail.
If everyone seems to be having a mail server problem based on online community discussions, then you are not alone and TELL your Apple tech this. Send copies of the links to the various conversations. Push them (nicely) to investigate internally what is going on and don't let them rely on the System support status. It also helps to put in a report to Apple down the track.
Make sure that you can get a copy of Apple tech guys email address. Thankfully, even though I was on the phone to them for in excess of 7 hours over the past two days, I could update my guy via email and also send him screen shots of things that did or didn't work using my iPhone. We would keep in contact and all I would have to do is send him an email and he would call me back straight away. No holding or dealing with any call centre issues, which is probably the only reason why I didn't lose my cool too much.
If you can get into your iCloud through your web browser, you have the options under the inbox and then the little wheel thing down the bottom (preferences) to put a vacation message, like an out of office. Put that on and explain you are having email issues and give another email address or your contact number. At least the people that you need to contact will know that things could get lost in cyberspace. I wish I had of known this earlier.
You can also forward emails emails to another email address under preferences. Also very handy.
Become friends with your tech guy rather than enemies. If you don't feel like your tech guy knows what he's talking about, politely request to speak to a supervisor. I would be having a nervous breakdown right now (small business owner, lost two days of billable hours so I am financially behind) if I didn't have a good relationship with the guy that has been helping me. We are a good team, with me updating him with the information, via these forums, to find a proper solution to the issue and to rectify the wrong information I was given by the previous Apple tech guy I spoke to.
Ask them to replicate your issue on their side of the fence to troubleshoot. For example, my tech guy Levi replicated my issue with websites by intentially removing the system certificate from his computer and he realised that was what the problem was, and thus he could quickly find out how to fix it.
Back up your stuff regularly. It might be annoying but it is peace of mind if know you are only going to lose a minimum of a week's worth of stuff.
Apple has an engineering team and tech guys raise 'tickets' to them with information on what has happened to their clients. I don't know much about this but I would assume it is having the engineering team investigate to stop this happening in future. They can only work with the feedback they get I suppose. I would also suggest doing the Apple Care survey so they also get feedback. We need to explain to them that we are asking for communication first and foremost - whilst it is inconvenient, if we all knew when and where they would be doing server upgrades (which the rumours indicate that this is what happened) then I don't feel everyone would be so frustrated.
Using your computer is like raising a child - you know when something is not right, even if you are not experienced at it yet. Sure, you may not know the lingo but trust your instincts and tell your tech guy. I have learned more in the past two days about computers and Mac's than ever before and I know when I can confidentially say that strange things were happening to my Mac and where Apple went wrong in guiding me. Don't always take a blanket or easy explanation if you don't think it is right; odds are it will result in making changes to your product that do more harm than good.
Keep a record of notes of how much time you have spent on the issue (including phone calls to Apple), what they have told you to do and at what time, changes to passwords, troubleshooting tips and the contact details (and reference numbers) of who you speak to. I'm not sure if Apple provides compensation for these issues or anything along these lines, but I certainly will be informing them so they can try and better their service to me in the future.
Anyway, I hope that helps everyone a bit - these are just things that I have learned and if anyone else has any tips please feel free to add them.

Tried port 465 but it wouldn't work.
Went to our help desk and here's the reply I got (paraphrased slightly cuz the person at the help desk was trying hard to be helpful and I don't want to get him/her in trouble):
I presented this question to the university team and then waited for a long time to get the following reply:
we do not allow relay from non-university IP addresses.
port 25 for smtp is a standard worldwide.
For the most part, that went right over my head and didn’t answer anything, but I hope it means something to you.
I called him to get more clarification, but all I really got out of it was that, if you don’t use exchange which is secure via port 443, then your other option is to use smtp.  And then he said something about how relay, iron ports, and authenticated accounts work together to make it secure.  I know it makes me sound a lot more inept than I am, but all that made little sense to me.  What I gather, is… that by selecting SSL when configuring your client, it makes it so that your login info and mail content is safe.  Sorry, I can’t provide a more cohesive and comprehensive explanation, but I think the bottom line is that they have combined a non-secure protocol with other stuff to make it secure.
So, I'm hoping that checking SSL and using port 25 somehow solves the problem to the satisfaction of our IT professionals at the University ...
Again, thanks for taking the time to educate the rest of us!

• IOS 8.1 installed yesterday has spoilt my iPad 2! There are no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is now sluggish, juddery and strange, battery is draining fast and it no longer security locks when put to sleep.

I am so cross because iOS 8.1 installed yesterday has ruined my iPad 2! There are now no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is slow, juddery and strange, the battery is draining fast and the iPad no longer security locks when put to sleep.  I have checked all the settings, done a number of resets and really wish I hadn't bothered and stayed with iOS 7 when it all worked like a dream.  I thought that by waiting until 8.1, teething problems would have been fixed and I am just horrified that there is no going back!  I am not the only iPad owner that has this set of problems so why didn't you warn us Apple!  What are you going to do to help us?  I do not want to be forced into buying a newer version of iPad because you broke this one!

In spite of the fact that you said you checked the settings, I still believe that you have system sounds muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

AS for your other issues, have you done any other troubleshooting like resetting your iPad, resetting all settings or doing a complete factory reset?

• AnyConnecy VPN and Split-tunnel ACL - Strange...

Hi,
I have ACL as follows and applied on AnyConnect VPN group as split-tunel value ACL.
access-list SPLIT-ACL extended permit tcp host 192.168.200.63 172.16.1.0 255.255.255.0 eq www
access-list SPLIT-ACL extended permit tcp host 192.168.200.63 172.16.1.0 255.255.255.0 eq https
When I connected with AnyConnect client, I can ping to 192.168.200.63 and also telnet to port 80. However I can not telnet to port 443. Strange thing is I do not see any hits on above ACL, morever I'm wondering how cam the ICMP is working and why it does not stop on this ACL..?
Phase: 4
Type: ACCESS-LIST
Subtype:
Result: DROP
Config:
Implicit Rule
Additional Information:
Forward Flow based lookup yields rule:
in  id=0x78e03140, priority=11, domain=permit, deny=true
            hits=113713, user_data=0x5, cs_id=0x0, use_real_addr, flags=0x0, protocol=0
            src ip/id=0.0.0.0, mask=0.0.0.0, port=0, tag=0
            dst ip/id=0.0.0.0, mask=0.0.0.0, port=0, tag=0 dscp=0x0
            input_ifc=outside, output_ifc=any
When I did the packet-tracer both ICMP and http it just drop on Phase 4..as bellow, I just want to know what this ACL and where its been applied to..?
What is the correct syntax for packet-tracer command when troubleshooting AnyConnect VPN to check access inside/dmz server..?
I have used as follows:
packet-tracer input outside icmp 172.16.1.1 0 8 192.168.200.63 details
Appreciate if someone can help me out on this..
thanks

To start with it is not ideal to configure a port based split tunnel. It is not support and will give you weird results like one you are experiencing. You should use standard access-list for the split tunnel and to restrict the users to the following port use vpn filter.
As far as packet tracer is concerned for the VPN client if you use the outside interface as source it will never work the reason is the connection between the ASA and the client is of real IP address (Public) and the traffic that you are testing with is a VPN encrypted traffic your ASA's outside interface doesn't know what is 172.16.1.1, he will check it against the outside access-list and will drop it.
So in your case i would strongly recommed that use standard access-list for the split tunnel and to restrict the user to specific port use vpn filter. Following are the links to configure the same:
Allow Split Tunnel for Anyconnect:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6120/products_configuration_example09186a0080975e83.shtml
Configure VPN filter (Its for site to site and remote access but it works the same for Anyconnect):

• I've been using firefox for my macbook pro for the last three years but lately when it starts up, I hear a strange piano chord play. Have others experienced it?

Only recently has Firefox for my macbook pro been acting strange when starting up. I will hear a piano chord play only once when the tabs are loading. Over the past two-three weeks on daily usage, this has happened three times. I'm just concerned my macbook has a virus/bug or if this can be resolved with changing a preference/setting in Firefox. I don't believe this is a problem with my computer itself and I have checked the notification alert sounds and none are the piano chords I'm hearing. I am currently using two add-ons: Tabs-mix plus and FVD Speed Dial if that helps.

Does it happen when you start up in Safe Mode?
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
* Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
;
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

• Performance (slow) and (maybe) problems doing the troubleshooting steps

I had noticed Time Machine backups taking longer and having more of a performance hit when they were happening, so I decided to check things out.
Based on some forum postings, I decided to try some of the steps outlined in the main "troubleshooting" thread.
Bottom line: I ended up at the Repair/Verify Disk step (A5) in the troubleshooting steps and since I'm using a Time Capsule, proceeded with (trying) to run a repair on the sparse bundle. Opened things up, but when I tried to " . . . mount the sparse bundle by opening the TC in the Finder and double-clicking on the sparse bundle" things seemed to hang.
I have a window indicating it is opening the sparse bundle (name seems correct), but it has been doing this for over half an hour without any visible progress. All I have is a process bar and "Checking Volumes..." (I do have cancel & skip as options.)
I'm loath to cancel or skip as it is possible that taking this long is normal.
Can anyone give me an idea how long to expect this to take and/or if it won't open properly, suggest a next step to try?
Thanks in advance,

As you can see, I ended up aborting the second one after ~3 hours (99.9% of which was spent ~1/2 way done with 21 minutes as the estimated remaining time).
Also, the first attempt took almost 8 hours(!) and didn't detect any errors.
I see, re: reset. I'm pretty much in agreement that it's beginning to look like deleting the sparse bundle and just letting time machine take over (i.e. starting from scratch) is looking like the main option.
I guess on one level, I'm back to the strangeness of my "problem." Everything, other than being really slow (including the disk utility check), seems to be working. On one level, I am paranoid that there is indeed a problem and worry that if I just ignore it, it will come back to bite me if I ever actually need to restore from the backup.
Thanks again,

• My iPhone is frozen. Troubleshooting doesn't work

My shiny new iPhone that I waited in line for on SF on Friday is iFrozen.
I have about 30 threaded text conversations, 30 contacts, 3 email accounts, 20 photo's, 600 songs, 2 TV shows and 1 movie.
I understand photo's, songs, video and contacts will synch back to my phone if reset.
The device is not an iPod, it's a Phone, which means I would HATE to lose my threaded text conversations and have to setup up my email accounts AGAIN (after 3 days of use).
iPod hard reset? No big deal, less is lost (sometimes).
Phone hard reset? Not good at all.
On top of these issues, Safari has crashed on me at least 7 times and while I was playing music on the ipod app i decided to hop over to my text messages to send a message. Once I got in the text message app the ipod app crashed (i.e. the music in my car stopped playing).
Crashes and now it's frozen.
Restarting (doesn't work):
Try restarting iPhone. To turn it off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Unfreeze (doesn't work):
Does iPhone appear frozen or stuck? Try pressing and holding the Home button for 6 seconds to close a frozen application. Then try restarting iPhone again.
Is the "reset" option in troubleshooting a hard reset?
On my Windows Mobile phone I can pop out the battery and it will recover through the safe mode boot without having to hard reset the device.
Is there another way to unfreeze this thing?
Current iPhone state: Displaying Home screen, touch unresponsive, on/off switch unresponsive, home button unresponsive.
Strangely iTunes still recognizes the phone when i connect it to my Mac and goes through the entire synch process fine.
Why isn't there a soft reset in iTunes to send to the phone?
Phone calls go straight to voicemail.
Best,
Rob
(good thing I bought 2 8GB's on Friday in SF)

No, get the screen fixed.

Hello CarenzaRielle,
I know not being able to access your Apple ID can be frustrating. I have located an article that will walk you through a series of troubleshooting steps to resolve this:
